No.32
Joe, Melanie and Toby are eating crab which they had from leftovers at the hotel. Melanie warns Joe not to tell Paul that the chef overstocked.
Caroline comes in to visit and catches them in the act. Melanie freezes, but tries to act naturally. Caroline asks Melanie to work tomorrow, even though it's Sunday. Melanie reluctantly agrees, but tells Caroline that she needs day off - she hasn't had one for ages. They talk about Adam and Caroline reckons she's messed things up with him completely.
Willises
Adam comes in and finds Doug sitting in the dark. He's hungry and will eat anything except potatoes(!) Doug is forced to tell him that the bank has foreclosed on the mortgage and will sell the house out from under them - and he hasn't told Pam yet. Adam is horrified. He suggests a cup of tea, but Doug decides to wander off to bed.
No.24, the following morning
Gemma is watching TV and Harold tells her off. It's her day off and she just wants to relax - although she likes being at work because it's just fun to her. Madge advises her to break away from work when she's not there so she doesn't get too attached. Gemma invites Madge and Harold down to the park so they can see everything - but they can't do it today because Madge has plans and Harold is playing pool(!)
The Office
Melanie thinks Caroline is pining for Adam. But Caroline reckons that Adam is going out with Gemma now. Melanie says they're probably just good friends and Caroline should find out where she stands.
Willises
Adam and Doug are having a cup of tea - Pam and Cody have gone to see Pam's father. Doug tells Adam that they're at the end of the road - he's not giving up, he's facing facts.
DOUG: I'm sick of this damn mess! I just want to be left alone!
Garden of the Willises, later
Adam comes out to see Doug and apologises for going on before. Doug tells Adam he's the one who should be apologising - he just never thought it would come to this. Adam tells Doug that none of it is his fault - things happened that were beyond his control.
DOUG: I know I'm a failure when I can't even keep a roof over our heads.
ADAM: You're not a failure. You'll never be a failure, not to us.
Garden of Number 32
Joe is ranting at Bouncer for destroying his garden. Joe hears some coughing discovers Toby in the cellar, smoking.
JOE: Where's the rest of them? Come on!
Toby admits that he bought them off a kid at school by saving up his lunch money. Joe sends Toby to his room and tells him to wait there.
No.24
Harold invited Reverend Richards for a pool game at the pub (on a Sunday!) but oddly enough he turned him down(!)
Adam pops round to see Gemma just as Madge and Harold are leaving. They chat about the wildlife park and Adam offers to come down there with her today. Gemma is pleased.
The Pub
Harold is setting up the balls while Madge observes how odd it is to see Harold in the pub!
Doug comes in for a beer and Harold invites him for a game of pool. Caroline comes in and asks them if they've seen Adam. Madge tells her that Adam is with Gemma today.
Wildlife Park
Adam and Gemma arrive in Adam's car and we get a nice montage of parrots and kangaroos. They hang out together stroking the animals and enjoying each other's company. Adam puts his arm around Gemma as they're feeding the guinea pigs. Finally they watch the antelopes and ostriches.
The Pub
Harold is concentrating very hard on his pool game but is fed up of Madge laughing at him. While he's playing, Caroline and Doug chat. Doug tells her that Adam and Gemma are just friends and Caroline is surprised, but pleased.
The Office
Toby has come in to ask Melanie if they need any shopping. She asks him what's wrong and he confesses about the smoking. Toby reckons that everyone at school smokes, but Melanie says that doesn't matter. They sit down for a little chat. Toby's been banned from going to school camp and is totally fed up.
(Later)
Caroline comes in and Melanie asks her whether she tried smoking at school. She tells Melanie about Adam's love status with Gemma and Melanie encourages Adam to tell her how she feels.
MELANIE: I bet you anything you'll just fall back straight into his arms - I just know it I've got a sixth sense about these things!
CAROLINE: All I know is, if I don't do anythign about it, I'll never know!
MELANIE: Good girl! Good luck!
The Pub
Harold and Doug are down to the last black. Doug is frustrated at the length of time Harold takes to make his shot. Eventually Harold sinks the ball and wins.
HAROLD: Care for another game?
DOUG: Oh, no thanks, I haven't got time - the decade's rolling on!
Harold thinks he might work up to challenging Glen Donnelly - apparently Glen is really good.
No.32
Joe sends Toby to his room again. Melanie comes in and Joe tells her about the cigarettes. She tells Joe that Toby is subject to peer pressure and explains about the other kids at school ribbing him. Joe calms down a bit and says he didn't know about that. Suddenly he has an idea.
Ramsay Street
Adam and Gemma arrive back, both in a very good mood. They kiss, just as Caroline pulls up in her car behind them. She looks gutted.
As they get out of the car, Adam sees Caroline and goes over for a quick word. She admits she was coming over to see Adam and apologises for what happened before and was almost hoping...
CAROLINE: I just hope you have more luck with Gemma than you had with me.
ADAM: Caroline, wait...
But she walks off into No.22.
