Matt tries to end Melissa's crush on him by acting like a meathead to her. Unfortunately it backfires and Todd ends up shouting at Melissa that there is no way to please her. He storms off.
Matt explains to Nick and Melissa that he was trying to get Melissa off his back - he not interested. Melissa is cross and tells Matt she was stupid for ever liking him. She goes off to find Todd. Nick doesn't like her chances.
Todd answers the door to Melissa. She tells him that Matt isn't her boyfriend, she was just trying to get back at Todd for being unfair about Neil in America. She pretended to like Matt, and then after a while started falling for him. But now she's realised that she still likes Todd. Todd isn't impressed, so Melissa starts shouting that he should grow up. She storms out, telling him "they're through"!
Helen comes in and wants to know what's going on, but Todd just storms off to his room.
Kerry decides to give Mary a ring to see if they can go to visit for a little while. She dreams about having their own garden or maybe having their own commune one day(!) Joe isn't too chuffed about this(!) Kerry can't wait to live away from the city.
Helen is sketching when Jim comes in. She tells him about the falling out with Melissa and Jim tells her about Hilary's reaction to Matt's apprenticeship. Helen thinks that Matt should stay in school - just like Nick should go back. Helen suggests another chat with Hilary so there isn't bad feeling in the family.
Hilary shouts at Matt for playing music and then tells him that she's told Jim to withdraw his offer of an apprenticeship. Matt is not pleased and says he'll just move out if she's going to make his life miserable. He and Lee will move out ASAP.
Karry is raving about moving up to live near Mary, but Joe and Toby don't see very happy about this.
In the living room, Toby tells Joe that he doesn't want to leave his friends. He's decided that he doesn't want to leave Harold and Lochie and everyone. Joe is also not sure - he's more of a city bloke than a country bloke. He doesn't want to sell his business, but Kerry's heart is set on moving.
JOE: It's a bit different now that you don't want to go. What are we going to tell Kerry? We don't want to hurt her, do we!
Jim decides to go across to talk to Hilary and says he won't be long because Hilary will probably throw him out(!)
Helen talks to Nick again about going back to school. She's heard of an art scholarship for young artists to work and study in London. Nick is very interested. Helen says that in the interim period, she'd like him to continue with Year 12. Nick says he'll think about it.
Hilary tells Jim that Matt is moving out and blames Jim entirely(!)
HILARY: I've worked so damned hard to build up a relationship with Matthew and now I'm in danger of losing it!
JIM: Yes, yes you are. But that's because you're forcing him to do something he doesn't want to do.
Jim says that Matt can have a career as a motor mechanic - it's quite a good job. He doesn't think that Matt is cut out to be an executive anyway. Jim says he'd rather Matt did finish Year 12, but he wouldn't get anything out of it if his heart wasn't in it. Anyway, Matt has already repeated Year 11 so must feel he's done his time. Hilary starts to soften. Jim says at least Matt will be with family and he'll do everything in his power to get Matt through the apprenticeship.
Joe broaches the subject of moving to the country and Kerry says she can't wait. Joe chickens out of telling her he and Toby don't want to go.
Lochie comes to the door and demands to know if Toby is moving away. She says it's dumb to live in the country.
TOBY: Nothing wrong with it!
LOCHIE: Yes, there is. I won't be there.
Todd is moping around and tells Helen that Melissa has been chasing Matt. Helen says Todd should just ring her and apologise - after all, they did go to a lot of trouble to be together in the first place. Todd can't understand why she liked Matt - she told Todd she loved him. Helen says that emotions often swing in the young, but if he gives Melissa another chance they could build up trust again. Todd thinks it just hurts too much when things don't work out.
Matt comes in and Hilary wants to talk to him. She asks him if she's absolutely sure about being an apprentice mechanic - will it make him happy? He says it will.
MATT: Do you mean that?
HILARY: I can't say I'm happy about it. But I have to accept the fact that it's your life and your decision.
MATT: I never thought I'd hear you say that.
HILARY: Matthew, I only want what's best for you. I know I often ask you to do things you don't want to do, but it's only because I love you, not because I don't.
MATT: You don't use that word very much, do you?
HILARY: No...I don't suppose I do. But it doesn't mean that I don't feel it. I simply have difficulty expressing what I do feel. I love you, Matthew. Very much.
MATT: I don't use the word much, either. But I love you, Mum.
He kisses her on the cheek and gives her a hug.
No.26, the following morning
Nick has decided to go for the London scholarship and will go back to school until he hears whether he gets it or not. Jim is surprised and thinks Helen has worked a miracle(!) Helen thinks Nick has a very good chance of getting in - he has had his own exhibition already, after all!
Toby and Lochie are hanging out. They talk about the move and Toby admits that he doesn't really want to go, and neither does Joe. Lochie says that Joe is a wimp not to stand up to Kerry! Toby goes off to take BOuncer for a walk.
Matt tells Nick that he's decided to stay on living at No.30. Melissa calls around to apologise for making a nuisance out of herself before. She tells Matt that Todd doesn't want to know now - although she's realised how much she really cares for him.
MELISSA: I really felt like Todd and I were meant for each other, you know. I hate that it's been mucked up. Anyway, it's not your problem. See you around, Matt.
Helen broaches the subject of Beverly with Jim - she thinks she's in denial about losing Rhys. She thinks Beverly must be very unhappy - her grief must need some outlet. They agree to keep an eye on Beverly.
Lochie storms into the kitchen and tells Kerry that she's mean for making Toby and Joe move to the country - neither of them want to. Kerry is shocked.
LOCHIE: They're just going because of you and that's not fair, it's real selfish!
