The puppies are playing with wool while Des is talking on the phone to Eileen. Des assures Eileen that Mike is finding homes for the puppies.
Des complains to Mike that the puppies are too much hard work and tells him he'll have to find homes for them quick. Des wants them out by the time he gets home from work tonight!
Paul asks Jane to use Gail's desk while she's filling in since Gail has resigned. He tells her Gail has gone to work for Rosemary in New York. Jane sympathises. Paul doesn't want sympathy about his marriage though.
Helen tells Jim that she feels rested and now wants to help Gail and Paul to sort through their problems. Helen tells Jim that she's got a good Christmas present for Charlene and Scott - she wants Madge and Henry to move in for a few weeks so they can have privacy.
Mike is trying to convince Mrs Mangel to take one of the puppies. She agrees and decides to call him Pembroke.
Jim has agreed to go along with Madge and Henry coming to stay, but he's not all that chuffed about it.
Paul is telling Madge that some Japanese people are coming, he'd like her to wear the colonial outfit and learn a bit of Japanese. Madge says she'll do her best. Also, Paul is giving her a payrise. He tells her she probably won't need it, the way Harold's shares are climbing. Madge tells Paul that she's sorry about Gail but Paul brushes this aside quickly. Madge informs him that Helen already knows.
Glen comes in and asks Paul to have a drink with him and talk about Gail. Paul shouts at him to get out and mind his own business!
The Coffee Shop
Jane joins Glen in the Coffee Shop and tells him that Paul is under a lot of pressure at the moment. Glen says that Gail isn't interested in anyone else - he should know. Jane puts her hand on Glen's and Harold looks panicked(!)
Beverly is taking Helen's blood pressure and is telling her that it's too late with Stephen - he almost hit her again, so she's given him his marching orders for good. Helen is delighted and asks if Beverly will pick up her friendship with Jim. Beverly doesn't think so though - she doesn't think she's very good at relationships. She doesn't want to use Jim by running back to him. She says she's going to be a spinster like Hilary and do crossword puzzles in her spare time!
Des comes home from work to find that Mike has only got rid of one puppy. Tony Romeo comes round with a message for Des from Greg Cooper. Greg is sorry for leaving town without saying goodbye. Helen has just made the offer for Madge and Henry to come to stya. Madge is surprised, but agrees, as long as Helen can cope with them. Scott comes in and they break the news to him. Scott is chuffed to bits that they'll have the house to themselves for a month. He runs off to tell Charlene.
When Scott has gone, Jim tells Helen that he wishes Paul and Gail's problems were as easy to solve. Helen tells Jim about Beverly sending Stephen packing. Jim says Beverly knows where he is if she wants him, but Helen tells him not to be so silly - he should tell Beverly how he feels before it's too late.
The doorbell rings and it's Mrs Mangel bringing Pembroke back. She says goodbye to him tearfully. Des is not chuffed that one has come back, but then there's more bad news - Tony brings Travolta back saying his landlord won't let him have a dog. Des despairs!
Beverly rushes in saying she's had an urgent message about Helen. But it was only because Jim wanted to see Beverly(!) They talk about their relationship and Beverly says they can't just pick up where they left off, it wouldn't be fair. Jim says he knows why she chose Stephen over him - she'd been waiting for Stephen to propose for five years, naturally she said yes. Beverly says it makes sense and that Jim understand her very well. Jim says it's because he loves her, and has loved her since he first saw her, if he's honest. Then he asks Beverly to marry him! Beverly says of course she will - she loves him very much. They kiss.
