Recap
Gail returns home from America and tells Paul she wants a divorce.
At Paul and Gail's
Paul is stunned and asks if she met someone in America. She says no, she is sick of lying to his family. She doesn't want to continue living under a microscope. Paul insists they sit down and talk it through but Gail refuses. Paul asks her to think how upset his family will be if they tell them the truth but Gail is unmoved. She wants a divorce and the quicker the better.
At Green Valley
Harold and Madge are going for the slowest brisk walk I've ever seen. They laugh about what the neighbours will be saying about them back home. Harold tells Madge he is very, very happy here with her. She tells him she knows now that she's doing the right thing and they agree to set a date for the wedding when they return home.
At Mrs Mangel's
Mike is rubbing moisturiser into Jane's back when Mrs Mangel comes in and has a fit. She objects to the scene of depravity in her living room and takes over on moisturising duty. All done, she goes off into the kitchen. Mike follows Jane to her room, telling her he worries about her out in the big, wide world. Jane asks if absence has made his heart grow fonder. He tells her he isn't confused anymore and doesn't want her to return to America. She replies that she'll miss him, she'll miss everyone, but she'll manage.
At Paul and Gail's
Gail is wandering wistfully around the house. Paul comes down and they awkwardly discuss dinner. Paul isn't hungry and Gail asks if he's upset about the divorce. He angrily shouts that of course he's upset - he's had a heavy workload with her away and he's tired. Gail is annoyed that he's only upset because of his work schedule. They row and Paul says he's coming round to the idea of divorce. Gail agrees. Paul walks towards her, about to say something but changes his mind and says he's off to get an early night. Gail shouts him back and it looks as if she's about to declare her true feelings, but she wimps out and asks if he's sure he doesn't want something to eat.
At the Robinsons
Beverly arrives to see Jim, telling him straight away that she can't stay. He replies that he was worried she wouldn't call round at all.
At Mrs Mangel's
Mike is looking at some of Jane's modelling pictures. She tells him it's all thanks to him and the Lassiter's Girl picture he took. Mike tries a bit of emotional blackmail - telling Jane how much her Gran missed her. Jane says she has Mr Bishop to keep an eye on her. The doorbell goes, it's Gail come for a chat. Mike leaves them to it. Jane tells Gail how excited Paul was when he heard about her coming home. Gail looks upset and Jane asks what's wrong - banishing her Nan to the bedroom when she interrupts.
At the Robinsons
Jim explains that he felt shattered when he heard Stephen Armstrong had moved in with Beverly. He tells her how much she means to him and says he likes to think that if things went wrong between her and Stephen she'd turn to him - "I love you, and I'll be there if you need me." Beverly says she'll remember that and rushes to the door. She thinks they missed their moment - she's with Stephen now and that's the way it has to be. Jim senses all is not well but she refuses to be drawn further.
At Mrs Mangel's
Jane questions why Gail isn't spending her first night back with Paul. Gail says sometimes people get married expecting one thing then find out it's a whole different ball game. Jane asks if she doesn't love him anymore and Gail answers that that's not the problem - sometimes you can care too much about a person and if they don't feel the same way it makes you miserable. Perhaps realising she's getting close to spilling all her guts she makes an excuse to Jane about her and Paul having a bit of a tiff, nothing serious.
At the Robinsons
Paul comes down in his fetching brown dressing gown, and confesses to Gail that he doesn't want a divorce and neither does she. Unfortunately for him, Gail is not there and he's pouring his heart out to an empty room.
On Ramsay Street
Madge and Harold return home, observed by Mrs Mangel. Madge sees her watching and tells Harold she's been branded a scarlet woman. Harold doesn't care - he loves her and wants the whole world to know. To prove it he stands in the middle of the street and shouts "I love Madge Ramsay", to Madge's delight and Nel's disgust.
In Mrs Mangel's
Mrs Mangel goes inside and proclaims to Jane that Madge Ramsay is a disgrace to the street, corrupting Mr Bishop. Jane is diplomatic and says it takes two to tango, Mr Bishop could have said no... Mrs Mangel ponders whether she should let Mr Bishop move home after all, then pries into the trouble between Paul and Gail. Jane puts her off the scent and says she's more worried about her - is she finding her job too tiring? Mrs Mangel says she has a new lease on life now she's joined the bowling club - and Mike has been very helpful. Jane says she's thinking of getting her a dog to keep her company while she's away but Mrs Mangel reflects that Mr Bishop is less trouble than a dog (I'm sure he'd be pleased to hear it too!).
At the Ramsays
Madge and Harold are tidying up the living room. Seems Scott and Charlene were too busy doing other things to tidy up before they left for work that morning... Harold hopes that their weekend was as delightful as his and Madge's (I'm sure it was!) and tells her he doesn't want his weekend to end - and it doesn't have to if she just names the day. She reveals she has already thought of a date - Valentines day. Harold thinks this is splendid and suggests they marry at Green Valley look out.
At Paul and Gail's
Paul suggests to Gail that he move back into Lassiter's so she can keep the house - it'll be handy for his work too. Gail is not pleased to hear that. When Paul says he's going to pack she wonders what the neighbours will say about that - she only got home last night. Paul says he'll stay longer if she thinks a few extra hours will make a difference, obviously hoping a few hours will turn into a few days. Bursting his bubble with a huge pin Gail replies that it can't happen soon enough for her. A dejected Paul goes off to pack his bags leaving Gail to sit sadly on her own at the table.
