Recap
Daphne locks Des out of the house after catching him having dinner with Amanda.
At the Clarkes:
Jamie is woken by the screaming and Daphne goes to settle him, telling Mike she'll never, ever forgive him if he touches the chain. Wimp Mike tells Des he can't go against Daphne's wishes and Des shouts that if he doesn't open the chain he can find somewhere else to live!
At Mrs Mangel's:
Amanda isn't impressed at Des running off "like a frightened rabit". She's also sick of her demanding old tyrant of a mother. The truth slips out that in an attempt to rid herself of her mother she gave Jane's dad a push into marrying her - by getting pregnant with Jane. Jane is astounded and hurt but Amanda doesn't see that she did anything wrong.
At the Clarkes:
Daphne apologises to Des. He apologises too, but tells her he was also sorry to have to come home to her - he was enjoying being out with Amanda, and with her flirting with him. He hasn't felt wanted like that in a long time. Daphne is hurt and says she has had to look after Jamie, and it sounds like he's jealous. He just wants her to realise she has a husband as well as a son.
At the Mangels:
The phone goes in the middle of the night and Jane runs to answer it to her father. She is delighted to hear from him, but he only wants to talk to her mum. Amanda talks harshly to him, but upon hearing he's changed his mind about the money she quickly becomes flirty and promises to ring him tomorrow. She tells Jane he wants her back, and the thought of keeping all that money means she's quite keen to go. Jane stops her going back to bed and asks if that money was ever really meant for the two of them? Oh wake up Jane!
Next morning:
Amanda wants to go shopping with Jane but they can't - Eileen is working at the senior citizen centre and someone needs to look after Nell. Amanda sulks in a chair, while Nell dictates a long list of things for her to do. She refuses, she's going shopping and wild horses won't stop her. Fair enough. Mrs Mangel tells her she can shop for the groceries and gives her a nice long list. She stomps off to get a shower and Mrs Mangel sighs to Jane that she's as selfish as she always was. Jane thinks she should tell her what she thinks, but Nell replies that she's already lost a son and doesn't want to lose a daughter as well. She's learnt to accept Amanda as she really is over the years, although she wisely points out that it's a pity Amanda hasn't done the same with Jane.
At the Clarkes:
Des asks Daphne if she wants to take Jamie for a drive but she won't - it's a bit cold and it might not be good for Jamie. Des huffs at her to forget it. Henry comes in and teases Des about being bruised after last night. Daphne isn't amused. Henry's after lawn mowing work and Des agrees, Mike's too busy to do it now with Uni. Henry and Mike go out and Daphne has a go at Des about the things he said last night - he's acting like a complete stranger and she doesn't think she wants to know him.
Outside:
Madge tells Henry if she'd caught her husband with a woman like Amanda she'd have killed him. He laughs that Daphne isn't far off.
At the Mangels:
Amanda has broken the heel on her shoe and is not happy. She's even less happy when Jane comes out dressed in some chintzy, gold and black patterned cardigan - "And what the hell have you done to yourself?" (I think she has a point this time!) Jane tells her she's sick of trying to pretend to be something she isn't. Nell joins in the fun and tells her to let Jane be. Amanda shrieks at her and reminds her of how she threw her makeup away when she was younger. Amanda retorts that times have changed. Jane stops them arguing by telling Amanda she's always had her on a pedestal but has now realised she's just another person - and she doesn't need a mother like her anymore. She is grateful for one thing though, thanks to her she's finally grown up.
At the Clarkes:
Madge has come visiting, on the excuse of filling them in on Lucy's progress. Des goes out to show Henry what to do with the lawn mower and Madge and Daphne have a heart to heart about last night. Daphne is worried about Des's feelings towards Jamie. Madge tells her he probably is jealous of Jamie - it's very common. Fred was very jealous of his kids, in fact that's probably when he started playing around... Daphne instantly worries about Amanda again until Madge tells her all she has to do is make Des feel included.
At the Mangels:
Jane is upset because she doesn't feel good about telling her mother the truth. Nell comforts her and Amanda walks in on the cosy scene, telling them both she's off back to Hong Kong. She finds it interesting that neither of them are trying to stop her.
Outside the Clarkes:
Henry is still teasing Des about last night. Des tells him he doesn't take any nonsense from Daphne - she knows who's boss. Daphne shouts him from round the corner and he goes running! She tells him she'd love to go for a drive if he still wants to take her. They kiss and make up.
At the Mangels:
Nell tells Amanda she needs to be honest with herself - she's running away as she always does. Amanda tells her if they're being honest then why doesn't she admit that she doesn't like her? Jane walks in on this fond mother/daughter goodbye and her mum shakes her hand goodbye! She reluctantly tells her she does look better the way she's dressed now, then kindly warns that looks don't last forever, make the most of them, before walking out!
At the Clarkes:
Daphne's making a candle lit dinner for her and Des. Mike thinks he should make himself scarce but she doesn't want him to start feeling neglected too and tells him he has to stay (Gooseberry?).
At Mrs Mangel's:
Madge pops round with a casserole for Nell. Jane invites her in to say hello but she is wary of bumping into Amanda. Jane tells her that Amanda has gone back to Hong Kong so she goes through. She presents Nell with the casserole, who charmingly says "How kind. Though I can't imagine what would make you think that we're in need of your leftovers." Madge angrily fumes that she made it specially (although I must admit my first thoughts were the same as Mrs M's on this one). She thinks Mrs Mangel should at least have sounded a little bit grateful. Mrs M clutches her heart and gasps and Jane and Madge quickly run to fuss over her. After seeing she's okay, Madge thinks it would be best for her to leave. Jane goes to see her out and Mrs Mangel gives a knowing smile. I think she's found a new game to play...
