Des's
Paul is shocked at this - but Terry says it's not him, she just feels claustrophobic - like everything is closing in on her, if she doesn't move out she'll suffocate. She wants to move to the country and rent a proper house, it'll be cheaper there. Also maybe start her own business.
Robinsons
Helen shows Scott some of her paintings and asks him which one he likes - but he refuses to tell her saying he's been caught that way before(!)
Paul comes in and says he's going next door. Jim looks at Helen's painting and wonders if it's out of perspective.
HELEN: I don't think so!
JULIE: Neither do I.
LUCY:(to Julie) Crawler!
Des's
Terry answers the door to Paul. She's spoken to Max on the phone about throwing in her job already, but hasn't seen him in person yet. Paul says he has something important to talk to her about. He sits her down.
TERRY: Well, come on, what is it?
PAUL: I thought a lot about what you said last night...and...well...to be honest, the more I thought about it, the more I thought I didn't want you to go. You see, I love you, Terry. I love you very much. And I thought...if it's a good idea...(he gets down on one knee)...I think we should get married.
TERRY: Married?
Terry says she can't give Paul an answer, only a "don't know". She tells Paul he means a lot to her but she needs some time - marriage is a big decision. Paul says she can have until that evening(!) because he really needs to know. He says proposing was a lot harder than he thought it would be!
Max's bedsit
Terry comes in and finds Shane tidying the flat. He says he's heard about Terry leaving. Terry says that she'd hate to leave with things bad between her and Shane. He hugs her and says they're fine. Terry says she'll leave in a couple of weeks. Shane thinks fresh air and open spaces sounds great.
SHANE: Just thinking about it...makes me wish I could come too.
TERRY: Really?
SHANE: Sure.
Terry says that Shane would be welcome any time. He doesn't notice that she is pining for him. He says that he'll bring Daphne(!) and Paul as well.
Robinsons
Helen and Lucy are still poring over Helen's paintings. Jim sends Lucy out to feed Basil.
Jim tells Helen that he's heard from the school about taking some people on for work experience. Jim wonders if Scott would be interested in coming to work for him for a week. Helen is surprised Scott hasn't mentioned it already. She tells Jim not to be too disappointed if Scott doesn't want to do engineering though.
Garden of the Robinsons
Lucy is playing with Basil when she hears a noise over the fence. It's Eileen, trying to get into Des's through the back door. Eileen tells Lucy not to interfere.
Robinsons
Julie is just off to the shops when there's a knock at the door. It's Eileen. She's come to see Helen. She says she wants to talk about Joan's children - whether nature or nurture is most important. Jim decides to take Lucy to an imaginary dental appointment(!) Helen isn't amused!
(Later)
Eileen is asking Helen over a cup of tea if she thinks young people rush into marriage. Helen says that adults said the same to her when she married young - the world hasn't changed, just the people. Eileen says that she and Malcolm were together six years, and ten before Des was born: they planned everything. Helen points out that Eileen didn't plan her divorce. She says she doesn't mean to be cruel, but the best laid plans can go awry at any stage.
Eileen goes to make another cup of tea, much to Helen's horror!
Max's bedsit
Paul is visiting Shane, but he's pacing the floor. Eventually he tells Shane that he's proposed to Terry. Shane is very surprised. He congratulates Paul though, and hopes that Terry says yes. He shakes Paul's hand and wishes him luck.
Des's
Terry answers the door to Eileen. She's looking for Daphne, but says that she'll talk to Terry while she's waiting. She starts asking Terry what she thinks of the reception plans. Terry says it's up to the bride and groom really. But Eileen says Joan's parents won't want to pay out for another wedding(!) Also, that Joan has no choice in the colour of the dress, it'll be cream(!)
Robinsons
Jim and Lucy have come back from the imaginary dentist(!)
JIM:(to Scott) I thought it was time we had a little chat.
SCOTT: Come off it, Dad, I've known all about sex and stuff for ages!
LUCY: I'd be interested!
JIM: I thought you said you were thirsty.
LUCY: This sounds more interesting.
JIM: Off you go.
Jim asks Scott about his career and whether he's thought about it. Scott says he hasn't really. Jim asks Scott about the work experience and whether he wants to work with him.
LUCY:(reappearing) I would be very interested.
JIM: Yes, but you're too young Lucy.
LUCY: But smart!
JIM: Sorry kiddo, they're only interested in kids that are about to leave school.
LUCY: I'm prepared to leave school.
JIM: No, Lucy, now off you go.
Scott asks Jim if he'd be disappointed if he says no, but Jim says it's his call.
In the kitchen, Paul is ironing a shirt to wear that evening. Scott asks him about the work experience thing. Paul says it's up to Scott - he shouldn't worry if Jim is disappointed, it's his life.
Restaurant
Paul and Terry are eating their meal. Terry puts down her fork and tells Paul she's thought of nothing but his proposal all day.
PAUL: Well?
TERRY: I care a lot about you, Paul. More than you probably realise. But I'm not ready for marriage.
PAUL: How about if I ask you next week...
TERRY: Oh, please, don't.
Terry says she doesn't want to lose Paul, but she can't say yes when she's not 100% sure. She admits she is still a bit tempted though.
Ramsay Street
Paul has brought Terry home and they're sitting in his car outside the Robinson house.
PAUL: You're absolutely sure?
TERRY: Paul...!
PAUL: Terry. I need to know.
TERRY: I'm sure.
Robinsons
Julie is up drinking a glass of water when Paul and Terry come in. Paul bangs a saucepan loudly to wake the whole house. Everyone comes out in dressing gowns, rather groggily.
PAUL: I've got an announcement to make. I hope there's some champagne in the fridge! Because we...Terry and I...we're going to get married!
(Is it me?! Terry apparently changed her mind between the car and the Robinsons front door?!!)
