Helen and Maria are chatting about marriage. Maria says that most of the time her marriage to Max was good. She thinks Max is living in the bedsit to make Maria feel sorry for him. They chat about Richard too and Maria tells Helen shyly that they're going out again on Friday. Helen is pleased and says it's time that Maria had some fun.
Daphne has made tea using the best china. There's a knock at the door and it's Eileen. She clearly isn't pleased to be in Daphne's company and sits down very stiffly.
EILEEN: Why have you asked me here?
Daphne pours the tea while Eileen sits there in silence. Daphne tells Eileen that they didn't get on very well at first, but she doesn't hold grudges. She wants her and Eileen to start again. Eileen finally relents and admits that you could see more on the beach than in one of Daphne's shows. She finally agrees, though still stiffly, that she and Daphne can be on speaking terms.
With this out of the way, Daphne moves on - Des is engaged to be married.
Eileen is hurt that Des hasn't told her. Daphne says it's not fair that she doesn't know - and Des and Eileen did fall out over Daphne so she wants to make amends. Daphne tells Eileen to make up with Des - she's inviting Eileen over to dinner tonight. She says she'll clear it with Des.
Daphne tells Eileen to promise that she won't let on to Des that she knows about his engagement.
Max comes round to pick up his tools. He says he rang up during the robbery and a bloke answers the phone - he thought it was Maria's boyfriend. They quarrel a bit, but then calm down. Maria says there's one good thing that came out of the robbery - there'll be less to squabble over in the divorce settlement.
Helen meets Joan - she's come to ask Helen if it's really OK to have the kids while she and Des are on their honeymoon. Helen says it's fine - she can cope.
Richard has come round and brought Maria some flowers. He asks her to have lunch with him. Maria is uneasy because Max is out the back. Max comes in and Maria introduces him as the insurance assessor. Max is suspicious about the flowers, saying that he's trying to butter Maria up so she'll accept a lower valuation. Richard invites Max round to his office to look at the figures. Max isn't pleased and storms out.
When Max has gone, Maria says that it's just new to Max that Maria is going out with someone else. They head off to have lunch.
Des is doing his personal accounts when Daphne comes in with the shopping. He's interested in what she's bought. Daphne says they're having Eileen over for dinner. Des thinks she's joking. As he realises it's true, Daphne says that Eileen is his mother and he must tell her he's getting engaged. Des thinks Eileen will ruin his engagement. Daphne says Des will feel really bad about it later if he doesn't tell Eileen now. She tells Des to stop whinging. She bosses him about and makes him promise to tell Eileen about the engagement.
Helen is reading in the garden when Max comes round. He tells her he feels like a real dill - Maria has got a bloke around. He's clearly upset and jealous. Helen says they all miss Max and invite him to stay for dinner tonight, because they didn't invite him to the party last night. He agrees.
Eileen, Daphne and Des are just finishing their dinner. Eileen and Des are bickering a bit - Des still hasn't told her about the engagement.
DAPHNE: Mrs Clarke. Des has something he'd like to tell her. (to Des) You tell her or I will.
Des tells Eileen that he's met someone and is getting married. And that Eileen won't make him change her mind.
Des is telling Joan that Eileen is really pleased that he's getting married(!) - he's very surprised! Joan says that Daphne was very good to make Des tell Eileen.
He gives Joan a key to his front door. He says she can go round today as the house will be empty.
Eileen comes round to tell Helen how thrilled she is that Des is settling down. She wants to borrow Helen's key so she can have a look around and get inspiration for a wedding present. Helen lends Eileen her key.
Eileen looks around Des's place and rifles through a few papers.
Joan and her two kids are playing with Basil.
Joan comes in and Eileen is very pleased to meet her. Just then the kids follow her in and Joan introduces them to Eileen. Eileen is shocked.
