No.32
Sadie tells Byron that she should move in with him.
SADIE: I need to stop getting dragged into my parents' drama and you need a new housemate! So, ta- da!
Byron isn't sure, but Sadie just asks him to bring the rest of her bags in!
Krista and Melanie's place
Krista has made dinner for herself and Melanie. She asks her about talking to Vic, but Melanie has decided not to.
MELANIE: Every time I play it out in my head, it just feels so...
KRISTA: Scary?
MELANIE: The Jane of it all! I don't want to lose a friend, and I don't want to put a wedge between two people who share a connection. I've done enough of that.
Krista serves up dinner.
KRISTA: OK, so. I understand where you're coming from, but I just think you're getting ahead of yourself. You should just talk to him and ask him how *he* feels. Because the Melanie of it all matters, too.
MELANIE: If I never ask, I'll never know?
KRISTA: Yeah.
Melanie smiles.
MELANIE: OK. I will ask him out for dinner.
KRISTA: Great! When?
MELANIE: Tomorrow night. Let's rip this Band- Aid off!
KRISTA: Let's!
They tuck into their dinner.
No.32
Sadie is ranting on in a monologue about her parents' relationship while Byron and Nicolette sit on the sofa. Nicolette is giggling a bit.
Just then, Andrew comes to find Sadie.
ANDREW: I followed your trail.
He holds up some of Sadie's clothes.
SADIE: Oh, I can't do this right now.
BYRON: Uh, maybe just...hear him out?
Sadie glares at him.
ANDREW: You were right. Your mum called me just before I got home. She does need more space.
SADIE:(sarcastically) Bombshell.
ANDREW: She said that she's been offered a teaching placement in Murrayville. She's going to call you to explain. She could be gone for a few months.
SADIE:(surprised) OK. Wow.
ANDREW: So no that you've made your point, let's get your stuff, please. I reckon if we put our heads together we can figure out a way to get your mum home too.
SADIE: This isn't what Mum wants! And this isn't what I want either. This is my home now!
No.24, the following morning
Vic is going to Gippsland to look at a pub - if it's right for him, he could be moving there soon. Nicolette, Byron and Jane take the news in, none seems terribly enthusiastic. Aaron thinks it should like a brilliant opportunity.
When everyone has gone, Jane tells Vic it's a shame to lose him just as they're all getting along.
JANE: Plans can change. Relationships can change. Sometimes they can even...
But some loud whirring of gardening equipment has started up outside and it's difficult to hear each other.
JANE: ...they can even be revied when you least expect it.
VIC: Terese, she's getting her money's worth out of those landscapers. What were you saying?
But Jane just says she has to get to work.
Lassiter's Complex
Andrew sees Cara and tells her that he's got a meeting with his boss.
Waterhole
Sadie is telling Remi the latest developments with Wendy.
Lassiter's Complex
Cara tells Andrew that sometimes a breather can be a good thing in a relationship.
Waterhole
Sadie says that Wendy is trying to find her own identity outside her marriage.
Lassiter's Complex
Andrew is worried that Wendy might like it better being alone! Cara advises him to just be cool and let Wendy do her own thing.
Waterhole
Sadie tells Remi that she's glad she's decided to move out.
No.32
Nicolette and Byron are talking about Vic's pub plans when Sadie comes in with some coffees for them. She's excited at her new living arrangements and goes off to grab some more stuff.
When she's gone, Nicolette turns to Byron.
NICOLETTE: I know that face. What did you do?
BYRON: I might have told her that she can stay whenever she wants for as long as she wants.
NICOLETTE: And she thought that meant...?
BYRON: Yeah.
NICOLETTE: But it doesn't...
BYRON: Uh- huh.
NICOLETTE: OK, cards on the table, do you want this?
BYRON: I'm not to sure given that...
NICOLETTE: ...she's doing it to punish Mummy and Daddy.
Sadie puts her head back in.
SADIE: Hey, can we paint the walls here?
She goes off to check the contracts(!) and Nicolette advises Byron to sort things out ASAP.
(Later)
Nicolette asks Sadie if moving in is what she really wants - there's no shame in walking things back. Sadie says she's happy!
When Nicolette has gone, Sadie presents Byron with a sandwich for his lunch. His smile is a bit forced.
Harold's Cafe
Jane comes across Vic and acts all flustered. Nicolette sees this and raises an eyebrow.
When they're on their own, Nicolette asks Jane why she's being weird. Jane burbles something about Vic being better and Nicolette twigs that Jane is into Vic again.
JANE: Alright. Perhaps I've been wondering what it might be like to try again.
NICOLETTE: Wow.
JANE: You don't approve?
NICOLETTE: I am shocked, Mum. I thought you to were done, like, forever.
JANE: Yeah...so did I. But I can't deny these feelings are still there.
NICOLETTE: Does he know?
JANE: I'm trying to be honest with him but he's just not getting it.
NICOLETTE: I'm a lesbian and *I* know that men can't take hints. If you want him, you have to spell it out in all caps.
JANE: Part of me is still trying to be sure.
NICOLETTE: Well, now there's a ticking clock.
JANE: Is there?
NICOLETTE: Well, yeah, if he goes to Gippsland, it's going to be harder to get back together.
Waterhole
Cara sees Andrew. Apparently the meeting with his boss was OK. He has to do a training module about appropriate behaviour, but he's back in uniform in two days. She congratulates him.
Harold's Cafe
Jane invites Vic over for dinner tonight and he accepts.
JANE: Excellent. It's a date!
When Jane has gone, Melanie comes over and invites Vic to dinner. He tells her that he just made plans with Jane, but he could come over after.
MELANIE: I could do dessert. I make a mean pavlova.
VIC: It's a date!
MELANIE: Yay
No.32
Sadie is already organising Byron's room and telling him to get rid of his beloved hairdryer(!)
Lassiter's Complex
Jane and Melanie pass awkward pleasantaries and Melanie tells her she's making pavlova. Andrew is sitting, brooding.
No.32
Byron has finally broached the subject with Sadie.
SADIE: You said I can stay here for as long as I want!
BYRON: Yeah, I said stay, not completely move in. And definitely not wage war against...my hairdryer.
SADIE: Wait, do you mean...
Byron looks down.
SADIE: You never wanted me to move in!
BYRON: It's just a lot to digest. I'm trying to wrap my own head around it.
SADIE: Well, then, why didn't you say something?!
Byron is silent.
SADIE: I have to re- pack my stuff!
BYRON: No, Sades, wait, I just wanted to talk!
SADIE: No! Message received loud and clear! I'll be out of your hair and away from your precious little hairdryer before you even know it.
Oh dear, that didn't go well.
Waterhole
Cara sees Andrew looking morose. He tells her he's fed up of making the wrong decisions all the time. She encourages him to talk to Sadie.
No.32
Byron is holding Sadie's suitcase and she is chasing him aroung the living room for it(!)
SADIE: Byron, I need to pack my stuff, give it back!
BYRON: No, not until we talk OK? Moving in here, it's a big deal, Sadie!
SADIE: Why are you telling me like I don't know?!
BYRON: It wasn't too long ago that you freaked out at the mention of marriage and kids.
SADIE: Well, that was different. Besides...
BYRON: Besides, what, Sadie?
SADIE: Besides, I can imagine that stuff for us now. One day. OK?
There is a long pause and Byron looks very pleased.
BYRON: Good! Good, because I'm crazy about you, Sades. But we need to talk about the big stuff, OK? Preferably before it happens. Look, I want moving in to be about *us*.
SADIE: It *is*.
BYRON: Would be even be having this conversation if your parents were in a better place?
SADIE: Fine. No.
She lies back on the sofa.
SADIE: Ugh. Dad is going to be so insufferable about this. I wasn't plannign on leaving him in the house alone for months. Maybe I should go home.
He passes her the suitcase and kisses her on the cheek.
Krista and Melanie's place
Krista is helping Melanie lay the table - Vic will be on his way shortly.
KRISTA: So I was just wondering how long I need to make myself scare for. You know, does "dessert" mean dessert? Or does it mean..."dessert"?!
MELANIE: Vic is a gentleman!
KRISTA: Really? Because that's not what I heard...
MELANIE: Well, the people who know those stories don't know him now.
KRISTA: OK, fair enough.
Krista is pleased to see Melanie so excited for her date.
MELANIE: I am choosing to believe that we will be on exactly the same page!
KRISTA: And the book is romance!
MELANIE: Exactly!
No.32
Andrew is telling Sadie that he's going to make some big changes to make his marriage work. They're going to do counselling online. He asks Sadie to come home.
ANDREW: Once you're home, your Mum will see what she's been missing out on!
SADIE: Wait, what?
ANDREW: Well, I actually think this move- out stunt will get her home quicker!
SADIE: Are you serious? Firstly, this was not a "stunt". This was a reaction to you guys turning our house into a war- zone for *months*. I can't believe you're still too wrapped up in what you want to happen to listen to Mum's needs.
ANDREW: Look, I'm just trying to fix my family. Sades, please, just...let's get your stuff and go.
SADIE: No, I'm not going to help you to coax Mum into coming back home before she's ready. I am not going to be your bargaining chip and I am not going to parent my parents anymore. Someone has to break this cycle and it looks like it's going to have to be me.
ANDREW: Sades...
SADIE: I'm not coming home.
(Later)
Sadie is explaining to Byron and Nicolette that she can't move back after all. She asks if she could just crash there for a couple of weeks. But Andrew wont' know that - as far as he knows, she's gone for good.
NICOLETTE: Wow. You're a little bit scary!
SADIE: Just the right amount?
They agree she can crash - it'll give them time to get a new roommate anyway.
No.24
Vic thanks Jane for an excellent meal and stands up to go.
JANE: There's no need to rush off.
VIC: There is, actually. I have to get an early night. Got to get my ducks in a row before I go check out this pub.
JANE: Well, at least stay for dessert...
VIC: Well, I need to leave room for, erm...herbal tea before bed.
JANE: I have tea!
VIC: No, that's so kind, but I'm fine, really.
JANE: Oh, Vic, I am so out of practice with all this, I've made a complete hash of things.
VIC: Not at all. The food was perfect.
JANE: It's not that, it's...it's us, it's this...because you know it's funny after so many years a flame disappears and suddenly it's alive again, as though it never went out and ... oh, listen to me ramble, I can't even get the words out.
Vic looks confused.
VIC: Whatever it is, you can say it.
JANE: Well, you know, sometimes words aren't enough. Action is required.
Much to his surprise, she kisses him.
