Lassiter's Park
Aaron is wandering around the place looking very worried, as he processes the news from Logan. He looks up at the Drinks Divas van to see the image of David smiling down on him, and rests his head against it, scrunching his eyes shut as if wishing the last few months away.
Erinsborough High School
In the classroom, Nell tells JJ and Dex that none of them are going anywhere until they tell her what's going on and why they were talking about her. JJ and Dex both look mortally embarrassed.
NELL: Dex? You've been avoiding me all week, and now this? I thought we were friends? But friends don't keep secrets.
DEX: ... I really like you. And I was hoping you felt the same, but then I found out JJ likes you too.
NELL (to JJ): Since when? You said you weren't interested in being anything more than friends when I asked you.
DEX: Wait, did something happen between you guys?
NELL: Yeah. I completely embarrassed myself.
JJ: Okay, that's not what I wanted.
DEX: Why didn't you say something?
JJ: That would've gone down amazingly (!)
NELL: Where do you both get off?! I'm not something to fight over. I can make my own decisions, and not anyone else.
JJ: Sorry...
DEX: We didn't...
NELL: Not interested! You're both as bad as each other.
She walks out, leaving the two boys looking dejected.
No 30
Cara is stomping about the living room, annoyed at all the mess Dex and JJ have left. She admits to Remi that she's stressing about her uni assignment that is due later in the week.
REMI: Hey. You're gonna kill it.
Aaron turns up, wanting to talk to Remi; but when he sees Cara, it becomes clear it's a sensitive matter, and Cara heads out, leaving them to talk.
AARON: Listen, is there any chance that I can come and see you about something? (...) It's just... I need... it's kind of urgent, and I was hoping that I...
Remi was about to head to a meeting, but given Aaron's obvious distress, she tells him to come with her now and she'll squeeze him in before that. Aaron thanks her.
The Waterhole
Wendy is at work cleaning tables when she gets a text message that makes her frown. Cara arrives, and they talk about uni; Cara admits she got a distinction on her last test, and has finally told Remi about the course. Wendy congratulates her, saying Remi must be 'so stoked'.
CARA: Yeah. She's saying all the right things (...) But I still don't want to make a big deal out of it.
Conversation moves to Wendy, who reveals she's just had notification that the winning candidate for the Gatsford Mentorship will be announced soon.
CARA: I'll keep everything crossed for ya.
WENDY: Thank you. And I'd say the same, but I don't think you need the luck.
Erinsborough Hospital
Remi and a nervous Aaron are chatting about his hepatitis B concerns. Aaron explains that a sexual partner who is unresponsive to the vaccine told him he'd been exposed. Remi says that in most people the vaccine is highly effective, but in some cases people don't develop the necessary antibodies for immunity.
AARON: He said that if I'm not vaccinated, then there's a strong chance I could have it?
REMI: (...) Did you practice safe sex?
AARON: Yes, we did.
REMI: Do you know if you've been vaccinated?
AARON: I've got no idea. I don't even know when I had my last tetanus shot.
REMI: It might've been when you were an infant. They rolled out the vaccine in '86, but it wasn't common for some time after. It doesn't mean you weren't - we'll just have to check.
AARON: So, if I'm vaccinated, then I'm fine, right?
REMI: The risks are extremely low.
AARON: And if I'm not... what does it mean? I know that it can affect your liver.
REMI: Yeah, it can. The infection is either acute - comes on quickly and goes away fast - or chronic, which means it can develop over time and may get worse.
AARON: How much worse?
REMI: Chronic infections can end in cirrhosis, liver cancer, or in extreme, liver failure. But that is worst- case scenario.
AARON: Okay. How long till I can find out?
REMI: It's not detectable in your system for 30 days (...) But in the meantime, I will track down your immunisation history, see if we can't shed some light. Hey, I know this is hard advice to take, but try not to worry until we have all the information.
Aaron nods, but looks very worried already.
Harold's Café
Haz is working at the counter while JJ sits at a table. Dex comes in, and has questions for JJ.
DEX: Why didn't you tell me that Nell said she liked you?
JJ: Why do you think?
DEX: I dunno. To make me look like an idiot?
JJ: You are. I knew you were keen on Nell; that's exactly why I did it.
DEX: You should have said something.
JJ: Why? That would've just made you feel bad.
DEX: Yeah, cos I feel great now (!)
JJ: Well, I didn't want to end up fighting about it like we are right now.
DEX: Listen, I don't need you to go all big brother on me. Just butt out of my life.
JJ gives up on the conversation and walks out, despite Haz, who has been listening in, trying to stop him. Haz then tells Dex that he's about to go on a break, and offers him a free juice - and, we are led to infer, a chat. Dex doesn't say no.
The Waterhole
Aaron is working behind the bar. He gets a message from Logan, saying, 'Hey, how are you holding up?' Aaron looks conflicted as to whether to reply - but before he can decide, Wendy appears behind him and gives him a shock. She asks what's made him so jumpy, but Aaron is unwilling to talk about it. She goes to serve a table while Aaron continues to look worried.
No 22
Terese comes downstairs to find Nell on the sofa looking glum. Terese asks why she isn't at school.
NELL: Boys are the worst.
TERESE: Oh! Yeah, well, I've heard that one before. I've even said it myself.
Terese sits down for a chat, asking Nell what happened. Nell explains that Dex and JJ have been fighting over her 'like I'm some sort of prize'.
TERESE: Oh, Nell...
NELL: And it's worse with JJ because he knew I liked him, and flat out told me he wasn't interested. I mean, who treats someone like that?
TERESE: Look, I don't know what JJ or Dex were thinking. But I do know that at this age, when you throw friendships and first crushes and brothers into the mix, it can get messy.
But at this point, Susan turns up for a meeting (with snacks). Nell says she's going for a walk. Susan asks if it's a bad time, but Terese insists it's fine - they need to go over residents' recommendations and get back to Harold about them. Nell looks like she feels a bit neglected as she heads out of the door, and Terese looks a bit guilty for having cut their conversation short.
The Waterhole
Wendy brings Andrew a coffee, but spills some of it as she puts it down. He senses a change in Wendy from the 'confident woman he left here earlier' and asks what's wrong. She explains she's been nervous since hearing that the mentorship decision was going to be announced.
WENDY: I really, really want this (...) I think of all the amazing opportunities I'd have. You know, the placements, mentors, contacts. I'd be able to show everyone that going back to uni, even at my age, is totally worth it.
Andrew says he knows how hard Wendy has worked for this; it is going to be worth it. If only Andrew was making the decision, Wendy jokes. She adds that apart from Parker, she doesn't even know who she's up against, or if she's in with a shot.
ANDREW: Those are the things you can't control. All you need to do is be incredibly proud of yourself, like I am. And if you don't get it, those judges better sleep with one eye open.
WENDY (laughs): Andrew!
Remi comes in and heads over to the bar to talk to Aaron. She says she's checked his immunisation records and that there's no sign of a hepatitis B vaccination - but she can only go back so far because Aaron's not from Victoria. Remi asks if he could contact his family GP, but he says she died years ago. But she has another idea - she could test Aaron for antigens.
REMI: If you have been vaccinated, they'll show up in your bloodstream.
This would avoid the need for 30- day wait, she explains, so suggests he come by the hospital later and she'll take a blood sample.
Harold's Café
Haz is in the kitchen with Dex. JJ comes in to join them, having been summoned by Haz who is playing mediator. Haz tells them that the point of this is to both have their say without arguing.
HAZ: No one's a winner here. Not you two, and definitely not Nell. Dex?
DEX: You know how much I like Nell. I was finally starting to think that we were getting to a place where she could see me as something more than just a friend. But then I found out she liked you first. It's like I'm second best. You made me feel like an idiot. I'm just so embarrassed about the whole thing.
JJ: I never wanted that, Dex...
HAZ: Let Dex finish, yeah?
DEX: It's like, the whole time, you're telling me to go for it, and you're just laughing behind my back.
JJ: Well, I never laughed at you. I never would. And I'm really sorry that I made you feel that way. I didn't say anything because I knew how much Nell meant to you.
DEX: I don't get it. You like Nell too.
JJ: Yeah. Yeah, but after all the stuff that we went through with Felix, with us fighting all the time, and you getting poisoned, just stepping back from all that seemed like the right thing to do. Plus Toadie likes you, not me.
DEX (smiling): He's only human.
JJ: Yeah. I knew that if I told you the truth about Nell saying she liked me, then you'd only be disappointed. I've done enough of that lately, and I don't want to do it again.
DEX: ... I hate fighting with you.
JJ: Yeah, me too.
DEX: It must have been weird for you, me asking for advice all the time.
JJ: Yeah, it was only slightly more weird than you trawling online for it. But I just wanted you to be happy.
DEX: This doesn't mean we get to hug it out, though.
JJ: Uh- uh. Not in public.
DEX: But what are we gonna do about Nell?
JJ: ... I don't know.
Eden University
Cara is getting a coffee in the courtyard when Wendy rushes up and asks Cara to distract her from worrying about the mentorship. But they end up talking about it anyway.
WENDY: You know, I just... I want this so damn much.
A text message comes through.
WENDY: Oh my gosh, I think this is it.
But Wendy spends so long debating with herself whether or not she should open the message, that Cara snatches her phone from her and opens it instead!
CARA (reading): The inaugural Gatsford Mentorship goes to... Wendy Rodwell.
A fellow student who's been lingering nearby - Heidi Runnals - overhears this, and looks annoyed. But Cara and Wendy are for the time being oblivious to her.
WENDY: You're joking?
CARA: Uh- uh.
WENDY: You're not?
CARA: Congratulations.
WENDY: I got it? I actually got it? I've never won anything based on academic hard work before. My gosh, can you believe this?!
Wendy squeals with excitement, and Cara smiles along with her.

Susan and Terese are having their Eirini Rising meeting at the dining table. They're going through residents' requests and approving or denying them. One of them is a request for no music to be played after 6pm. Terese is distracted, but eventually vetoes it, saying it would be extreme.
SUSAN: Motion denied. I think Harold will get a kick out of telling Hilary that! (...) Hey, did I walk in on something with Nell before? You haven't been yourself since I got here.
TERESE: She confided in me about something, and I haven't mentioned it to Toadie. It's just not sitting well.
SUSAN: Something serious?
TERESE: No, no - not really. It's just... I know Toadie would want to know. But the problem is that if I tell him, then I'm breaking Nell's trust. And I've been there before with teenage girls, and they have a long memory!
SUSAN (laughs): I remember that only too well. Well, I suppose if it's not life and death, then keeping Nell's trust is probably the right thing to do. Unless you think that's gonna cause a problem with Toadie.
TERESE: No, no, I don't think so. I mean, we're in such a good place at the moment. I just, umm... I just don't like keeping secrets from him.
Eden University
Andrew has arrived and has brought Wendy a rose (from a bunch he's left the remainder of at home) to celebrate her mentorship win.
ANDREW: I'm so proud of you, honey. I knew you'd get that mentorship.
Heidi, the disgruntled student, gives Wendy another look as she walks past, but again this goes unnoticed.
WENDY: You know, I never have felt this way before. I did it all on my own.
ANDREW: I know. And you had some major soul- searching when Philippa's diary came out. And even though I know that me and Sadie make you happy, you needed something more.
WENDY: And now my cup is full!
Erinsborough Hospital
Aaron is sitting in the corridor looking worried. Remi calls him in to take his blood sample. She says once it's done, the results will be with them in a few days.
REMI: While you're waiting, it might be good for you to lean on your family for support.
AARON: No, they can't know about this. And you can't tell them, please.
REMI: Oh, no, I won't. Anything we discuss is confidential. If you don't want to confide in them, maybe there's someone else?
AARON (terse): No, Remi, no one can know about this. This is just between me and you.
REMI: Aaron, you're a consenting adult. There's nothing wrong with whatever you and your partner did.
AARON: No, it just... it wasn't like that, alright? It... it was Logan, and he is not my partner. And I do not want anyone knowing about this. Please.
REMI: I won't say anything. Hey - if you need someone to talk to, or you've got any questions, you can call me anytime, okay?
Aaron agrees, and Remi prepares to take the sample...
Harold's Café
Haz is back at work while Dex and JJ chat at a table.
DEX: We really stuffed up, didn't we?
JJ: Big time, yep.
DEX: I get you were trying to do the right thing by me...
JJ: But none of us were thinking about Nell. Yeah.
DEX: If Mum and Ma knew about this, they'd rip into us.
JJ: I reckon we're doing a pretty good job of that ourselves.
DEX: What do we do to fix this?
JJ: Start with an apology?
DEX: Yeah, cos that worked really well last time (!) Maybe we should... offer to do all her chores for her?
JJ: I don't think a bit of cleaning is gonna cut it.
DEX: Toasties for life?
JJ: How are you gonna pay for that?
DEX: I dunno. I'm out of ideas. What do you have?
JJ: Well, I reckon it's not about the things that we'd give her - but how we treat her, which has to be a lot better than what we already have.
At this point Nell comes in, but seeing JJ and Dex, she rolls her eyes and walks out again.
DEX: It's gonna be hard when she doesn't want to be near either of us.
JJ: Yep...
Eden University
In the courtyard, Wendy is on the phone to Sadie telling her her good news. Cara is sitting next to her. As she finishes the call, Heidi approaches.
HEIDI: Planning a big night to celebrate the mentorship?
WENDY: Oh, you bet! Still can't believe I got it.
Heidi just looks at her sceptically.
WENDY: Did you apply?
HEIDI: No. Why bother, when it was a box- ticking exercise?
WENDY: A what?
HEIDI: To make the uni look good.
WENDY: ... Oh, okay. Well, I really didn't see it that way. You know, I worked really hard on my application.
HEIDI: It wouldn't have mattered if you did or not. It was a diversity PR stunt that you benefited from.
CARA: Hey. Wendy won that mentorship on her own merit, and for you to say otherwise is racist.
But Heidi just smirks and walks away.
CARA: Unbelievable! Are you okay?
WENDY: Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine. It's just... that wasn't necessary. You know, Heidi just had the wrong end of the stick.
CARA: Yeah, well. You go out and you celebrate that mentorship, because you deserve it.
Cara heads off to class, but Wendy is left looking worried by what Heidi has said.
