As with the rest of this week's episodes so far, the opening credits are eschewed in favour of a title card.
The Waterhole
Melanie and Toadie are at a table, discussing their house sale plans. They both appear to be in shock after discovering most of the other houses in Ramsay street are on the market too, and Toadie is surprised Paige didn't mention it to him when he enlisted her to sell No 30.
MELANIE: Yeah. Terese is not surprising, but David and Aaron? And the Rodwells - they've only just moved in!
TOADIE: (...) Can't stop thinking about Karl and Susan's faces.
MELANIE: They did cheer up a bit when we said we were staying in the area (...) Are you absolutely sure you want to do this?
TOADIE: Yeah. Yeah, I am.
MELANIE: Cos you did make the decision quickly. Maybe there should be a cooling-off period?
TOADIE: No, no. This is what I want to do, okay? I want to make new memories, with you, in our own place, alright? It's best for both of us.
He hugs her. Toadie then gets a text from his old mate and former street resident Lucas Fitzgerald, saying he's coming to the wedding.
MELANIE: I so wish Amy would get in touch.
TOADIE: Hmm, yeah. Well, the ball's in her court, isn't it? ... I wonder what everybody else thinks about this great migration?
Ramsay Street
Aaron, David and Nicolette are breaking the news to Jane that they're moving to New York. Jane seems very hurt that this is the first she's heard about it; David says they've been keeping it quiet until they were sure it was happening.
JANE (to Nicolette): I thought you and Kiri were happy?
NICOLETTE: Well, we are, Mum. But, you know, she's moving back to River Bend, and... we decided not to hold each other back.
DAVID: Obviously, you're very important to us, Jane...
JANE: Oh, well - am I?!
DAVID: Of course you are. We have a lot to figure out; and we'll be coming back and forth a bit.
JANE: I'm gonna miss out on Isla growing up! Birthdays, Christmases...
NICOLETTE: No, you won't, Mum. You can visit us every school holidays.
JANE: Nicolette! First Byron, and now you?
NICOLETTE: Sometimes, you've just got to be a bit spontaneous.
JANE (bitter): Mm. Spontaneously following someone else's lead!
The Penthouse
Paul is packing in preparation for his move to New York, explaining to Leo there's a lot to get through. Paul thinks it will be good for David that he and Aaron are coming too, to give David a clean break.
LEO (mischievous): Except Nicolette comes as part of the package!
PAUL: Oh, I've made my peace with her. I just want my family to be happy, you know?
Leo nods quietly.
PAUL: I wish you'd consider coming, too.
Leo's non-committal. Paul remarks that he's finding a lot of Terese's possessions about the place; he appears to be packing up a specific box of them, in order to return them to her. At this point, Jane marches in.
JANE: Have you done this to spite me?!
PAUL: Good morning to you, too, Jane (!)
JANE: Because of you, I am losing my daughter - my granddaughter!
PAUL: I think you brought this on yourself.
JANE: You are a wrecking ball - just destroying other people's lives!
PAUL: Jane, this is only happening because of what you told Shane. Otherwise, we'd be in partnership and nobody would be moving anywhere! You want someone to blame? Go and look in the mirror.
Jane is lost for words, and looks a little lost more generally...
No 22
Paige is helping Terese with her own packing; they're clearing some clutter away so that the place is in optimum condition for house viewings. Terese says Paige will have her work cut out; Paige admits she can't believe that five houses in the street are on the market.
On the patio, Glen is telling Kiri about finding Terese in tears, explaining she didn't realise he was there. He's convinced she's upset about them moving away to River Bend.
GLEN: I couldn't bring myself to ask her about it, so... I just pretended I didn't see. Otherwise known as burying my head in the sand.
KIRI: Terese's offer is conditional on finance. Once the settlement money comes through, there's no going back.
GLEN: Yeah, I'll find a time to talk to her. Look, I'm sorry. I know this affects you, too.
KIRI: Well, my girlfriend's made her own plans (...) We said we wouldn't hold each other back. Guess she took that as a green light.
GLEN: Maybe you should tell her we're not a hundred percent?
KIRI: No, it doesn't matter. But you and Terese need to be on the same page.
Kiri turns around to see Paige standing there, listening awkwardly!
KIRI: Paige! Oh, we weren't talking about you!
Paige says she knows, and asks them if they want a coffee...
No 30
Toadie and Melanie come in, discussing their plans to move house. They're surprised to find a large, giftwrapped parcel on the table. There's an unsigned card on top of it, which reads, 'Sorry I can't make it to the wedding - open the gift now.' They excitedly unwrap it and find inside... an old tutu, a hat, and a takeaway box containing mostly-eaten pizza!
MELANIE: Eurgh, gross!
TOADIE: Alright, Samuels - you can come out now!
Joel Samuels emerges from the sunroom, Toadie's old friend and fellow House of Trouser inhabitant! It seems Toadie has deduced the identity of the parcel-giver from the clues to their bygone antics, such as the time they had to sing 'Mary Had a Little Lamb' wearing tutus, the pizza which was a House of Trouser nutritional staple, and the hat which is presumably a reference to their Full Monty routine.
JOEL: Was it the pizza or the tutu that gave it away?
TOADIE: Ah, it was the smell of the fake tan, mate!
Rousing music cuts in as Joel and Toadie run towards one another in slow motion, and Joel leaps into Toadie's arms!
JOEL: The tan's real.
Joel introduces himself to Melanie, and they hug. Joel explains Karl let him into the house; he says that he can't make the big day, but wanted to meet Mel and wish them the best of luck. Toadie and Joel go in for another hug.
No 22
On the patio, Kiri is deliberating over whether to call Nicolette, when Paige emerges with coffee, and sits down next to her.
PAIGE: Cards on the table - are you worried about this move to River Bend?
KIRI: ... What did you hear before?
PAIGE: Not much. But... I have been watching Terese and Glen lately, and something feels off. Look, I know that you've got a vested interest in this new resort...
KIRI: Believe me, I am trying to take self-interest out of the equation.
PAIGE: Yeah, me too. I mean, I'd love the chance to sell this place, but... only if it's right. Do you have concerns?
KIRI: Let me put it this way. I want everyone to be doing whatever they're doing for the right reasons.
PAIGE: Yeah... I've wondered if Terese is hesitant because of Paul.
KIRI: Uh... I probably shouldn't comment on that.
At this point, Glen comes in with Terese, who is excitedly ushering in two more wedding guests - her niece Roxy, now heavily pregnant, and husband Kyle.
ROXY: The partay has arrived!
KYLE: I keep telling her, the wedding's not for days!
Paige wastes no time in dragging Roxy out into the garden for a quiet word.
PAIGE: I need to talk to you ASAP. It's about Terese and Paul.
No 30
Joel is explaining to Toadie and Melanie why he can't make the wedding; he has an expo to go to. We learn that he has gone into the triathlon apparel business (of course!!) In other words...
TOADIE: He sells budgie-smugglers to fitness fanatics.
Joel reports that business is booming. Toadie asks him how his kids are; Joel reports that they're doing well at school, and have both made the national junior team this year.
TOADIE: You should see his kids. I mean, they are offensively good-looking - it's disgusting!
MELANIE: And are you married, Joel?
JOEL: Err, not anymore, no. But, hey, if Toadie can find love again, maybe I'm in with half a chance, right?
TOADIE: Well, the problem is, you never developed a personality.
Joel feigns being wounded, and Melanie asks if the pair of them are always like this with one another. They laugh and admit they are. Joel asks Mel what she does; she explains she's part-owner of The Drinks Divas, which he recognises as Amy's business, saying he's seen pictures of the van on Instagram.
MELANIE: She is my business partner.
JOEL: And is she around? I'd love to see her.
TOADIE: Uhh, she's in Cairns. It's a bit, uh...
MELANIE: Complicated.
Joel looks intrigued...
No 22
Roxy and Paige are chatting alone on the patio. Paige is telling Roxy about her and Kiri's concerns.
ROXY: What are you saying? That Auntie T is still in love with Paul?
PAIGE: It's just a feeling. And admittedly, I wasn't there for the big bust-up...
ROXY: Well, it was pretty toxic.
PAIGE: But speaking from the outside, I just... I feel like she's *settling* for Glen. He's a nice guy, I get that. But Terese is about to tie up everything she has in River Bend (...) and if there's a chance her heart's not really in it...?
Kyle emerges from the house to join them. Paige asks Roxy if she could 'do some sussing', perhaps starting by talking to Aaron and David about it.
KYLE: Or, we could keep our noses out of it?
Terese emerges with a box of Paul's possessions that she's found, and says she's heading over to the penthouse to return them to him. Once she's gone...
PAIGE: See? She can't stay away from him.
ROXY: Weird.
KYLE: Terese can manage her own life.
ROXY (pointed): You were gonna go and say hello to Levi and the Kennedys, weren't you, babe?
KYLE: Gladly.
Taking the hint that his input is not required, Kyle slinks off. Paige says she has to go over to the Rodwells' place and has loads of work on, so Roxy tells her not to worry - she'll sort out what's going on with Terese. Paige thanks her.
The Penthouse
Terese and Paul are exchanging one another's possessions that they've found while packing up. The tone is pleasant but awkward, and they begin to talk over one another nervously. Terese asks Paul if he's planning on keeping the penthouse when he leaves for New York. Paul isn't sure; he's offered it to Leo, but has been hoping Leo will come to New York as well.
TERESE: ... Right, well, I know how much that would mean to you.
PAUL: Mm. Well, I've always wanted my kids together, but I just... didn't expect it to be on the other side of the world, you know?
Terese looks disconcerted. Paul asks when she's planning on moving to River Bend.
TERESE: Well, I guess, as soon as the house sells. And the settlement comes through.
PAUL: Right. Well, guess we're both off to fresh fields, eh?
TERESE: ... I guess we are.
They gaze at one another uncertainly for a while, before Terese says she'd better go, and leaves, promising to let him know if she finds any more of his things. Both look emotional as she departs.
No 32
David and Aaron are feeling bad about not having discussed their plans with Jane earlier, and David apologises to her. Aaron suggests she could always move to New York as well. But Jane, who is still clearly very hurt, thinks the move is all about Nicolette 'getting away from me'.
At this point, Freya comes in, explaining she's here to get Jane's entry for the Ramsay Street history book. Freya senses it might not be a good time, but Jane says it's fine. Freya sits down, gets her phone out and starts recording.
FREYA: It's really simple... Tell me something really special about living on Ramsay Street. Like, something that's really important to you.
JANE: Well, uh... anything to do with Ramsay Street would have to start with my nan, Nell Mangel.
We cut to a shot of Helen Daniels' portrait of Mrs Mangel on the wall behind them.
JANE: She took me in when I needed a home. And, umm... well, she didn't always get along with everyone...
We flash back to Episode 532, where Jane and Mrs Mangel are having a row outside No 32.
JANE: Nan, why are you doing this? You've lost your family, and now you're driving your friends away.
MRS MANGEL (tersely): I don't need any of you. Play your childish games, and see if I care!
Back in the present, we get a strong sense Jane is reflecting on her nan's behaviour as she thinks of her own relationship with her kids...
JANE: Not that she was *all* bad...
FREYA: Well, she sounds like a real character.
We have another flashback, this time to Episode 842. Mrs Mangel is bidding an emotional Jane farewell as she leaves for the UK.
JANE (tearful): I love you.
MRS MANGEL (emotional): And I love you, too, dear.
As her car drives away, we see assembled Ramsay Street residents throwing confetti and waving Mrs Mangel off for her new married life in the UK - including Todd, Katie, Paul, Des and his young son Jamie, Gail, Helen, Jim, Beverly, Madge, Mike, Mrs Mangel's son Joe, and Jane herself - along with Mike's schoolfriend Jessie Ross, and the Reverend Sampson who officiated at the wedding. And, of course, Bouncer the dog.
Back in the present, Jane looks glassy-eyed as she reminisces...
FREYA: Actually, you know, someone told me that you met your first love on Ramsay Street.
But the emotions the memories are bringing back are too much for Jane to bear.
JANE: I'm sorry, Freya. I really can't do this right now.
Jane gets up and walks out, leaving Freya, Aaron and David looking worried.
No 30
Toadie and Melanie have finished telling Joel about the situation with Amy declaring her feelings for Toadie and then running away to Cairns. They haven't heard from her since.
TOADIE: We're not angry, we're just confused. I mean, this has really come out of nowhere. Amy and I have been friends forever.
JOEL: It's true. She even knew you when you had the mullet. Quite amazed she could see past it, to be honest!
MELANIE: It was a pretty bad haircut!
TOADIE: Oh, come on, it was the nineties - everyone had a bad haircut.
JOEL: Come on, you had a dead ferret hanging off the back of your head! It was beyond embarrassing, Toad.
Melanie's about to make more tea, when Toadie gets a text from Amy.
TOADIE: She's not coming back from Cairns! She's gonna send someone around to pick her stuff up.
MELANIE: What about the van? And your friendship, and... how are we gonna sort things out now?
They all look worried.
No 22
Terese returns with the possessions from Paul's place. Glen shows her a letter from Emma Warner, the lawyer for River Bend's current owners, which has come by courier. It contains the contract for sale; Toadie's been sent a soft copy too, he explains. Glen asks if Paul's mentioned anything further about their divorce settlement; Terese says not, but she's sure it will come through soon.
GLEN: Are you okay?
TERESE: Yeah, why wouldn't I be?
GLEN: I, uh... didn't want to mention anything sooner. But you seemed pretty upset last night.
TERESE: ... Yeah, well, I guess I'm tired. There's a lot going on for everyone.
Terese then finds something amongst the possessions Paul has packed up for her. It's the compendium that used to belong to Paul's father, Jim. Terese explains to Glen that it's Paul's 'good luck charm'.
TERESE: He must've put it in by accident. It's okay, I'll take it back to him later.
Glen seems to want to say more, but instead he opts to head upstairs and start packing. Once he's gone, Terese takes the compendium out of the box and opens it. It contains a lot of work documents - but hidden underneath them are some handwritten papers, addressed to her. She reads them.
PAUL (voiceover): Dear Terese... It's late, and I can't stop thinking about you. If I could change one thing in my life, it would be losing you. And now my punishment will be living the rest of my life knowing that I pushed you away. Sometimes I swear when I enter a room, I can smell your perfume. I would give *anything* for you to look at me with love in your eyes again. I had so many plans for us. All the dreams we dreamt together - it's just so hard to let them go. To let you go.
Emotional, Terese continues reading...
Harold's Café
Kiri has come to see Nicolette, following Nic's decision to move to New York which she explained to Kiri in a message last night.
NICOLETTE: I just thought it would be easier. Writing everything down.
KIRI: Yeah, no - I mean... we said we wouldn't hold each other back - I just thought we'd have more time.
NICOLETTE: ... Are you still full-steam-ahead with River Bend?
KIRI (uncertainly): Yeah. But I'm gonna miss you.
They hold hands.
NICOLETTE: I'm gonna miss you, too.
Roxy comes in, and makes a beeline for Aaron, who's standing by a table near the door reading a magazine. She grabs his arm, and declares, 'I need you!'
AARON: Wow, nice to see you too, Rox - by the way, Isla's doing fantastic, thanks for asking (!)
Roxy's about to give him a hug, but then decides her business is too urgent!
ROXY: You need to tell me - is there still a spark between Paul and Terese?
No 22
Glen's about to go out, when he finds Terese at the dining table, crying again - this time, over Paul's compendium.
TERESE: It's nothing.
GLEN: Is it Paul? What's he done now?
TERESE (tearful): He didn't do anything! I... I found some letters that he'd written to me.
Containing his annoyance, Glen hands Terese a box of tissues.
TERESE: I don't think he meant for me to read them. Anyway, I'm fine. I just... I didn't expect to find anything like that.
Having dried her eyes, she walks off. Glen glares at the compendium...
The Penthouse
Paul frantically searches the penthouse for his compendium. Leo says he hasn't seen it; and Paul worriedly realises that he must have put it in the box with Terese's things by accident...
No 30
Joel is writing in the Ramsay Street history book; and while Melanie listens, Toadie sets about recording Joel so they can add further memories to the tome.
TOADIE: So, tell me, what is your best memory of Ramsay Street?
JOEL: Oh, there's too many - there's too many. The funniest one, though, was when you were raising money for the uni, and we made a deal that we weren't gonna shower or wash until you'd raised a thousand bucks.
MELANIE: That is a weird fundraiser.
JOEL: Which was fine, until people started throwing food at us...
We cut to a flashback to Episode 3879, where Toadie and Joel being pelted with tomatoes by uni students. Back in the present...
JOEL: ... and we smelled so bad that Dee locked us out of the house! And then finally Drew and Karl took matters into their own hands.
TOADIE: I have three words for you - The Full Monty.
We flash back again, this time to Episode 3245, where a much younger Amy Greenwood is introducing...
AMY: ... Erinsborough's answer to the Chippendales!
We relive Toadie, Joel, Karl, Karl's son Billy, and Drew Kirk doing their famous Full Monty striptease routine, which leaves them with only hats to cover their modesty. Susan can be seen watching with amusement in the crowd, while Lou Carpenter stands near the stage, poised to turn out the lights (or, as it will transpire, not!) at the crucial moment. Back in the present...
MELANIE: Do you think anyone still has the photos from the Full Monty?
TOADIE: No, don't even think about it!
Joel apologises as he has to rush off, and bids Toadie and Melanie a fond farewell, wishing them all the best for the wedding day.
JOEL (to Toadie): You know what? I'm just so happy for ya.
As he leaves...
TOADIE: Good luck with the smugglers!
No 22
In the back yard, Roxy and Paige are chatting about Terese's possible unresolved feelings for Paul - apparently, Aaron and Susan both think there might be some truth in it.
ROXY: I just want to make sure Auntie T's happy.
PAIGE: Look, I'm sure she knows what she really wants.
Glen comes out of the house with Paul's compendium and is about to toss it into the recycling bin! But at this point, Terese emerges with Paul, who has come round to retrieve the compendium. When Terese sees Glen about to throw it away, she absolutely hits the roof.
TERESE (raging): Oh, my god! What the hell do you think you're doing?
Paul takes the compendium back.
TERESE (to Glen): What are you thinking?! You *know* how much that means to Paul!
GLEN: Terese...
TERESE: No, what is *wrong* with you?! That belonged to your father! I mean, what were you thinking, throwing it out?!
Paul tries to calm her down, but Terese is incandescent.
TERESE (screaming): No, no, no - this is absolutely unforgivable! I don't even know what to say to you!
She storms away. Paul and Glen stare at one another uncomfortably, before Paul walks off, too. Paige and Roxy share a concerned glance between them...
