The Waterhole
Toadie drops by the bar to ask Chloe if she's heard anything about Hendrix's operation but she hasn't. Chloe wonder if something has happened that they weren't expecting given there has been no news yet?
Hospital (outside, front)
Mackenzie stands outside the front of the hospital listening to Hendrix's wedding vows inside her head. Susan wants Karl to go inside and see what is happening and almost reluctantly heads inside.
Pierce and Lisa are also sitting outside waiting for news, and we hear that Alana has stayed behind in Sydney. Both are grateful to the donor for donating their organs to Hendrix.
LISA: I wish we could tell them how grateful we are.
Susan is trying to get Mackenzie inside so she can get some sleep, when Karl returns with news that Hendrix is out of surgery and in ICU. Everyone is chuffed that the surgeon said the operation went well.
Hendrix's hospital room (next day)
After doing some checks on Hendrix, Dr Caton tells Mackenzie that everything is looking as it should be. Moments after the doctor leaves, Hendrix comes round and Mackenzie tells him the operation went well.
HENDRIX: Look at me, I'm breathing!
"We made it," he tells her and then starts cracking jokes!
Hospital outdoor garden
A very happy Mackenzie runs outside to the others that Hendrix is awake "and cracking bad surgeon jokes already!" Everyone is thrilled with the news and immediately, Lisa and Pierce make their way inside to see their son.
Hendrix's hospital room
Lisa and Pierce can't get into Hendrix's room quick enough to check on their son. "Mum, I'm okay now," he confidently says along with an order to "stop worrying!"
To give him hope to get better, Lisa tells him about some of the apartments that she has shortlisted for them.
Hospital outdoor garden
A very relieved Mackenzie is grateful that Hendrix has made it through the operation, admitting to the K's that she did fear he wouldn't for a while.
KARL: Oh it's not going to happen. We're through the hard part now.
SUSAN: You and Hendrix are going to get your happy ever after.
Hendrix's hospital room
Hendrix tells Mackenzie about lying on the operating table before being knocked out, thinking that those in the room were about to save his life. Mackenzie admits to writing lots of letters in her head thanking the surgeon, Dr Caton.
Hendrix is in the middle of telling Mackenzie about the apartments his mum has shortlisted when suddenly he starts gasping for breath. Mackenzie runs to get help and moments later the room is flooded with medical staff checking Hendrix.
Family room
Lisa thinks the issue with Hendrix is him adjusting his anti-rejection meds - Pierce isn't too amused that she's been reading up on that and tells her to "stop speculating." "We are all feeling pretty anxious," Susan interjects with to diffuse the situation and is sure they'll know more soon.
Meanwhile outside in the corroder, Karl and Dr Caton are having a chat:
KARL: Maybe it's best if I talk to the family?
DR CATON: Yeah, it might be easier coming from someone they know.
After a nod of heads between the pair, they enter the family room.
Everyone is anxious for news and Dr Caton explains Karl will provide the update as Hendrix has been asking for Mackenzie. "Is he okay?" Mackenzie nervously asks Dr Caton replies "there's a lot to explain," and Mackenzie follows the doctor.
PIERCE: (to Karl) Can you please just tell us what is happening to our son?
Hendrix's hospital room
Mackenzie rushes into Hendrix's room and straight to him, wanting to know what is going on. Dr Caton starts to explain things to Mackenzie.
DR CATON: Hendrix is suffering from a condition called hyper acute rejection. In simple terms, it means his immune system is attacking the donor lungs.
MACKENZIE: That's what the anti-rejection drugs are for?
DR CATON: In rare cases, a person can have certain antibodies in their bloodstream that overpower the anti- rejection drugs.
As soon as the doctor says that the penny seems to drop for Mackenzie and she turns to look into Hendrix's eyes.
Family room
Meanwhile Karl is breaking the news to Lisa, Pierce and Susan and explains that even though Hendrix was screened ahead of the surgery, the tests didn't pick the issue up. "How is that possible?" Lisa asks and Dr Caton thinks the level was so low for it not to be picked up. Pierce asks if the problem is "reversible" and can Hendrix just be given more anti- rejection drugs?
Hendrix's hospital room
Dr Caton continues, telling Mackenzie that unfortunately, Hendrix has already suffered "irreparable damage" to his new lungs.
MACKENZIE: So what do we do now?
HENDRIX: There's nothing they can do.
"That can't be right!" Mackenzie says and is sure something can be done. "There's too much damage," a tearful Hendrix says to her.
MACKENZIE: How long do we have?
DR CATON: A few hours.
Mackenzie and Hendrix both fully burst into tears as they absorb the shocking news. "I'm sorry," Hendrix says to his wife as Dr Caton quietly exits the room to let the pair spend some precious time alone.
Hospital (outside, front)
Karl finds Pierce outside on his phone - he's trying to get someone to give them a second option. "There has to be something that we can do," he says to Karl but the reply is there isn't otherwise Dr Caton would already be doing that. Frustrated at having to stand by and watch Hendrix die, Pierce wants to fly someone in. Karl explains that yes he could get other doctors, but they'd say the same thing - what has happened to Hendrix is rare and there is no known treatment.
KARL: I'm sorry, it's hard to hear, but it's the truth.
Pierce asks about putting Hendrix onto a heart bypass machine until another donor can be found. Sadly, Karl breaks it that Hendrix's antibodies would reject that new transplant too.
Hendrix's hospital room
Given the news, Mackenzie admits that she's glad they didn't put off the wedding and calls it "the best day of my life."
MACKENZIE: I wouldn't change a second of it.
HENDRIX: Even now?
MACKENZIE: Especially now. Hendrix, you're my husband.
HENDRIX: I love you so much.
MACKENZIE: I love you Hendrix.
Dr Cohen interrupts to see if they have any questions but they don't. She then mentions that they want to make sure Hendrix is comfortable by sedating him but that is immediately rejected.
HENDRIX: I don't want to be asleep. I've only got a few hours left. I want them to count.
"I don't want you to suffer," Mackenzie says to him but he feels missing this precious time will be worse.
HENDRIX: If it gets too bad, I'll tell you. I want to spend as much time as I can with you.
Mackenzie only relents when Hendrix promises to tell her if it gets too much for him.
Hospital (outdoor garden)
Pierce is in a daze as he comes out of the hospital into the garden area and sits by himself.
The Kennedys are at a nearby table and aren't doing much better as they sit watching Pierce while also trying to absorb the news themselves.
Hospital
Chloe and Toadie have arrived at the hospital and both are in tears, comforting one another.
(Later)
Karl comes out to tell Chloe and Susan that Hendrix is now having trouble breathing. Chloe sends the K's in as she needs a few more minutes.
Hendrix's hospital room
Mackenzie leaves Hendrix's bedside so the Kennedys can talk to Hendrix.
HENDRIX: Hey, second family.
SUSAN: I'm so sorry.
HENDRIX: I want you to know, I love you. You believed in me when everyone else gave up.
SUSAN: I love you too.
KARL: Very, very much Hendrix. You're like a son to us.
Hendrix is after a favour from the Kennedys - after he's gone, he wants them to make sure Mackenzie is happy and that she becomes everything she can be. Readily, the K's agree to his request.
Having readied herself, Chloe comes in to say her goodbyes. "This is so unfair," Chloe tells him and he jokes, saying that she must be glad they "didn't hook up back in the day!"
CHLOE: Only you could be so inappropriate!
HENDRIX: Admit it, I was a huge pain in the backside.
CHLOE: You were. A total nightmare! It's a miracle I adore you so much.
Family room
"I don't think I can do this," a tearful Mackenzie says to Toadie because "it's too much." Toadie knows that "it hurts" and reassures her that she can.
TOADIE: Man, I hate that this is happened for you. This is the last time that you're going to be able to be there for Hendrix. You will find the strength that you need.
Hendrix's hospital room
Mackenzie, along with Hendrix's parents are sat round his beside as 'Coming home' gently plays in the background. After an oxygen mask is placed on Hendrix's face, Lisa stars to rub her thumb on his forehead, something he used to love when he was little.
MACKENZIE: You don't have to do this any more. It's okay. Please don't be strong for us.
LISA: I'll be hear sweetheart. I won't leave, I promise.
PIERCE: We love you, mate. It's okay to let go.
HENDRIX: I love... I love you.
MACKENZIE: I love you.
Suddenly Hendrix tells Mackenzie she should get two puppies for the apartment (they'd been talking earlier about what pets to get - a cat for him and a puppy for Mackenzie) because "one would be lonely."
(Later)
Hendrix's breath is really laboured as 'The Fault in Our Stars' starts to play.
MACKENZIE: Thank you for loving me. Loving you has been the greatest adventure of my life.
Moments later, the monitors show that Hendrix has passed away.
Mackenzie gets out of her seat, get up on to the bed and hugs Hendrix while Pierce and Lisa hug each other.
There is no promo following the episode, it goes straight to the credits where the cast names appear.
