No 22
Terese is doing the vacuuming; she explains to Estelle that Glen usually does it while Terese does the grocery shopping, but he's having to rest his back. Estelle volunteers to go and buy the groceries.
ESTELLE: Don't look so surprised. I'm happy to pull my weight while I'm living here.
Terese says that would be great, and retrieves a debit card from her bag which she gives to Estelle, but is careful to stipulate that she should stick to the items on the shopping list.
TERESE: I'm on a bit of a budget.
ESTELLE: Completely understand. That divorce isn't gonna pay for itself. Have you given much thought to the invoice I found at Paul's?
TERESE: No, I haven't decided whether or not to tell my lawyer about it.
Estelle thinks she should, and says that Paul approached her at the hotel before, wanting to reschedule their date.
ESTELLE: I refused, of course. The poor man is obviously obsessed with me. But that's no reason to go against my baby girl.
Terese smiles, placated.
Lassiter's Complex
Chloe is having a cuppa with Kiri and Freya outside the café. Chloe explains that she is still waiting to hear back from Paul about hiring an assistant for her.
KIRI: It's your assistant. Can't you hire one without him?
CHLOE: Normally, but the person I want is through this inclusive employment initiative that Terese set up last year, so I need manager approval. I just want it sorted so I can throw myself into this wedding. And then start planning a birthday party for a certain someone.
It becomes evident she's talking about Kiri, but Kiri replies that it's weeks away and she doesn't even know who she's inviting yet - specifically, she doesn't seem sure whether she wants Glen involved. Freya asks after his recovery; Kiri confirms he's out of hospital but doesn't know more, saying she hasn't heard back from him after having dropped off a care package for him.
KIRI: I shouldn't be surprised. He's probably mad at me for leaving him alone at the vineyard.
CHLOE: You don't know that. He might be trying to give you space.
KIRI: Doesn't a care package make it obvious I want to see him?
CHLOE: You'd think so, but men are idiots sometimes.
Pierce turns up, and Chloe introduces him to Kiri and Freya. Nicolette comes out of Harold's and is disconcerted to see Pierce, and walks off to clear tables at a distance. Pierce asks Chloe if they could find time for a 'proper catch-up', but she's pointedly non-committal, and says she'll have to check her schedule. Freya and Kiri exchange a glance.
Pierce walks off, and Nicolette offers him a feeble wave as he passes, but he completely blanks her! Back at the table...
KIRI: So, that's Pierce.
CHLOE: Yep.
KIRI: How does it feel having him back?
CHLOE: ...
FREYA: Okay, can someone fill me in on the history here, cos...?
Chloe takes a deep breath!
No 22
Terese is gardening when Glen comes out to help. She comments that he looks much better, and he says the rest helped. She tells him not to overdo it, and he offers to cook dinner instead. Terese explains Estelle is out shopping for it as they speak.
TERESE: I know, I'm just as surprised as you; it's totally out of character.
GLEN: Hey, there's something you should know; I saw Estelle earlier this morning, leaving the hotel with Paul.
TERESE: Oh, don't worry, she told me about the visit. Something about her spy mission, apparently. She also promised that she wasn't gonna see Paul again. I really feel like she's on my side now.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul is exiting the hotel, when he runs into Pierce.
PIERCE: Robinson. Long time, no see.
PAUL: Greyson. You're here for the wedding, I take it, eh? You must be thrilled.
PIERCE: Yeah, well, I'm happy for Hendrix, and Mackenzie's great.
PAUL: Well, here's hoping that he doesn't stuff up his marriage the same way that his dad did.
PIERCE: Haha - yeah, or you, for that matter! I heard Terese gave you the boot. Isn't she with your brother now?
Paul's smirk fades.
PIERCE: Must sting. And did you really try and buy a baby?
PAUL: Somebody had to fix that mess, and not all of us had the luxury of running away and hiding in Sydney when the proverbial hit the fan.
PIERCE: And what's that supposed to mean?
PAUL: Have you forgotten? It was your bright idea for Leo to hire Chloe in the first place, and that's when this mighty string of disasters started happening.
PIERCE: Does Chloe know about this?
PAUL (laughs): Everyone does! Welcome back (!)
Pierce walks off, just as Estelle is passing the hotel en route home from her grocery mission; the strap on her handbag splits, and some of the items fall on the floor. Spying an opportunity, Paul goes over to give her a hand.
ESTELLE: I told you, we can't see each other!
PAUL: Oh, come on, I'm sure Terese won't have a problem with me just helping you.
Looking at her bag, he remarks that the old thing has seen better days.
ESTELLE: It's not old. It's vintage.
PAUL: Ah. Even so - maybe due for an upgrade! If I was Terese, I would probably buy you a new one. You know, you're her mother and yet she's got you running her errands like some sort of servant.
Estelle coolly announces she has to go, and she walks off. Paul looks sly as she goes.
Harold's Café
Jane is helping Nicolette, who is covered in flour, with her cake-baking efforts for Hendrix and Mackenzie's wedding, by taste-testing some of the icing flavours she's frenziedly preparing.
NICOLETTE: Is there a difference between baking soda and baking powder?
JANE: ...
NICOLETTE: I bet Pierce will be the first person to tell me I've stuffed up if it doesn't work out.
JANE: Now, now. Please do not start something with him this time.
NICOLETTE: I will have you know that he came by the café this morning, and I was very civil.
JANE: Is that so?
NICOLETTE: Yes, that is so! You know, my drama-causing days are behind me... He did blank me, like the wet-muffin man-child he is.
Levi calls from the counter, waiting for a coffee, but Nicolette attempts to rope him into cake-testing duties instead. However, when she looks at the cake, it seems to have imploded, with a sinkhole in the middle!
NICOLETTE: Oh... it was fine when I got it out of the oven.
JANE: Well, cut it - it might be alright... Oh, that looks... moist.
NICOLETTE: Raw! I think the word you're looking for is 'raw', Mum! I mean, it was fine when I kept checking on it while it was in the oven!
JANE: You didn't keep opening the oven door every time you checked it, did you?
NICOLETTE (weakly): ... No!
Nicolette marches back to the kitchen with the cake, ignoring Levi's second request for coffee.
The Waterhole
Paul sidles up to Estelle while she's waiting to be served at the bar.
ESTELLE: You never know when to quit, do you?
PAUL: Look, I'm sorry if I might've overstepped the mark before, and I was hoping that I might be able to make it up to you.
He opens a jewellery box to reveal a diamond bracelet.
PAUL: I bought it for Terese before everything went south - and, well, it's been sitting in a cupboard ever since. All alone, and unworn...
ESTELLE: I can't accept that.
PAUL: Well, you don't have to make up your mind straight away. But why don't you take it for now, and you can always return it if you don't want it?
ESTELLE: Paul!
PAUL: If you're worried about Terese, then we'll make it our secret, alright? Oh, come on, Estelle - you deserve this. I don't want Terese telling you otherwise.
He smiles and walks off, leaving the bracelet with her. Estelle looks conflicted.
No 24
Chloe is chatting to Freya in the sunroom. Freya says that Chloe doesn't owe Pierce anything, but that talking to him could be a good thing. Chloe's not keen to dredge up Pierce's intervention in her relationship with Nicolette, saying it was all so long ago and that the baby saga all worked out in the end.
Kiri comes in and tells Chloe she has a visitor; it's Pierce. Kiri and Freya leave them to talk, and Chloe confirms it's fine.
PIERCE: I'm... I'm *really* sorry. I think I've got some ground to make up with you.
The Waterhole
Estelle is sipping a coffee at the bar. She eyes the jewellery box next to her, before opening it - and then quickly closing it again, as if resisting temptation. But she can't keep her eyes off it, and again opens the box, before taking the diamond bracelet out and sliding it onto her wrist. She smiles.
No 22
Glen is watching through the window as Terese has a coffee in the back garden, and takes more of the prescription painkillers. There's a knock at the door, and he pockets the bottle before going to open it. It's Kiri, who awkwardly greets him, and hands him some contractors' invoices from work that have come in while he's been off.
GLEN: Why didn't you just email them?
KIRI: Uh... maybe because it was a good excuse to see how you were doing? *How* are you doing?
Glen says he's relatively good; he's lucky Leo found him quickly after the accident, as it could've been a lot worse.
KIRI: I'm glad I asked Leo to check on you, then.
GLEN: You did?
KIRI: Yeah, I called him to say that you were working alone. Look - I shouldn't have left you. That was a bad call.
GLEN: No, no - thanks for sending Leo out. Oh, and for the care package as well (...) I meant to thank you earlier, but...
KIRI: But you suck at contacting people?
GLEN: Yeah, I'm just used to being a loner, I guess.
KIRI: Well, look, I... I hope you're not taking that approach while you're recovering. You don't have to do this on your own. In fact, you shouldn't. Anyway, I should head off, but, umm... I'll see you around.
Kiri leaves. Glen looks at his bottle of pills, and looks conflicted.
No 24
Chloe and Pierce are thrashing it out in the sunroom.
CHLOE: When you left, you made this big deal about how you weren't going to tell me what to do, or give me warnings about Nicolette. And then I found out you were all conspiring to use me to spy on her!
PIERCE: I know.
CHLOE: It was straight-up manipulation, without any consideration for my feelings. I just... I didn't think you were capable of something like that. It's like you were a completely different person.
PIERCE: Listen, I hate that I hurt you. And I had no idea that things would unfold the way they did. I'm so sorry. What can I do?
CHLOE: Nothing, actually. I feel a lot better now I've said my piece. Just like Kiri said I would. She's gonna have a field day.
PIERCE: What's going on with you two? You seem close.
CHLOE: We're just housemates...
She changes the subject to the wedding, and happens to mention that Nicolette is baking the cake, which Pierce is not impressed about!
PIERCE: I mean, can she even bake?
Community Centre
Glen is at a support meeting, and speaking to the group.
GLEN: Kiri didn't know what was happening with me. But she seemed to be reading me like a book. It was a real kick in the guts after years of sobriety to be making the same mistakes - self-medicating, dealing with things on my own. She made me see I need to speak to someone. Not being in pain anymore was like... a fog lifting. I could actually have a real conversation with Terese, and help her with what she's going through. I don't think I can go back to not being medicated. I need to find a balance to get me through this. I need to find a strategy.
Erinsborough Greenway
Harlow and Glen are walking and talking.
HARLOW: Don't beat yourself up, Glen. I could see how much pain you were in.
GLEN: That doesn't excuse how many pills I've already taken. It just feels so good to be pain-free.
HARLOW: Well, I'm here to help. I can hand out your meds, but also, I can talk, okay? So, just tell me if you're struggling to go to AA. Deal?
GLEN: Yeah. Deal. Oh, and...
HARLOW: Don't worry. I'll keep this between us. It'll be our secret.
Glen takes out his bottle of pills and gives them to Harlow.
HARLOW: You're gonna get through this.
No 22
Glen helps Terese reach a tupperware from the top shelf, demonstrating that his pain is under control. Estelle comes in.
TERESE: Hey, thank you for doing the shopping.
ESTELLE: Happy to help. But the most embarrassing thing happened on the way back. The handle to my handbag broke, scattering my belongings everywhere (...) I really need to get a new handbag.
TERESE: Yeah, sounds like it.
ESTELLE (hinting): It's a shame, really, that I can't afford to buy one for myself.
TERESE: Oh, well, maybe you should get the old one repaired. It'd be cheaper.
ESTELLE (hinting more heavily): Or someone could buy one for me.
Terese glances at Glen.
TERESE: Umm... I'd have to think about it.
ESTELLE: You have to think about it?! You have tons of designer clothes and shoes - you obviously can afford it!
TERESE: I bought all those things when I had an income! I'm unemployed right now!
ESTELLE: My bag broke while doing your shopping, and you refuse to buy me a new one! Obviously, I'm just not worth it!
Estelle walks out, upset.
TERESE: What just happened?!
Harold's Café
Freya and Kiri come in, and find Jane at a table lined up with numerous slices of cake.
FREYA: You on a cake bender, Jane?
Jane takes the opportunity to escape, asking the girls if they'd mind taking over as Nicolette's cake testers! Kiri and Freya are enthusiastic, and Jane goes to tell Nicolette, explaining she has to go and meet Terese outside. Nicolette just hands Jane more cake.
NICOLETTE: Take these for her to try! (to Kiri and Freya) Just so you know, this is my first foray into cake-baking, so honest feedback is required.
FREYA: What, your first attempt is a wedding cake? You're ambitious, girl.
NICOLETTE: I'm just trying not to fight with Hendrix's dad, so in comparison to that, this is a piece of cake... literally.
KIRI: Oh, this is good. Like, really good. Maybe I could commission one for my birthday?
NICOLETTE: Sure! How many people?
KIRI: Umm... not that many.
FREYA: So you're *not* inviting Glen?
KIRI: I'm still undecided. I just don't know what having him there would mean. You know, he's technically family, but it's not like he's been at my other birthdays.
NICOLETTE: ... Well, because Glen missed out on you growing up, doesn't mean that you can't make up for it now. If you want.
KIRI: Yeah, I guess...
NICOLETTE: The past doesn't define what comes next for any of us. We get to decide that for ourselves.
There's an awkward pause, and Nicolette goes to grab some other flavours.
FREYA: Jeez, I wouldn't be offering to make a cake for someone whose dad hated me. She's brave.
KIRI: Yeah, she's... definitely something.
Kiri looks like she's continuing to change her mind about Nicolette...
Harold's Lakeside
Terese convenes with Jane, and immediately starts moaning about Estelle, saying she had to get out of the house and away from her.
JANE: Family disputes can knock us about the most.
TERESE: Even if it's just about something so trivial. I mean, things were going well! And then it just took one ratty handbag to just throw everything out of whack again!
JANE: Was it *just* about the handbag, though?
TERESE: Well, no... It was just her feeling entitled, and having a tantrum because she wasn't getting what she wanted. And I told myself that I had to accept her the way she is. And I'd be foolish to keep expecting her to change. She told me that she'd do better, but she actually never does.
JANE: Well, it sounds like someone else we both know. Paul.
TERESE: Oh... yeah, well... that's depressing.
JANE: You know, maybe that explains why you've given Paul so many chances. It's a pattern of behaviour that you recognise as love.
But Terese doesn't want to think about that. Jane asks how she might move forward with Estelle; Terese says she's enjoyed reconnecting, and doesn't want to cut her out of her life again.
JANE: Well, if you're both committed to moving forward, this doesn't have to be a make-or-break situation. I mean, we've come leaps and bounds over the last couple of years because we have both wanted to.
TERESE: Yeah, you're right. It's just a silly spat. It'd be a shame to undo everything.
Lassiter's Complex
Estelle approaches the hotel...
The Penthouse
Paul hands Estelle a whisky, and sits next to her. She's wearing the diamond bracelet Paul gave her, and he remarks on it.
ESTELLE: It would be rude not to accept such a beautiful gift.
PAUL: I'm just sorry that Terese made you feel that way.
ESTELLE: Why are you sorry? She should take better care of me.
Paul flatters Estelle, saying people like them know life's too short not to indulge in the finer things.
ESTELLE: A motto I've always lived by.
They laugh and toast their glasses.
PAUL: You, Estelle, are a fascinating woman!
The Waterhole
Harlow is at a table, with Glen's bottle of pills. Glen arrives to meet her, saying the pain's back and he can't think straight. He says he's due one more pill for today, but that that won't leave him any for tonight.
HARLOW: Well, maybe try and get to sleep early tonight, and then, we can start the schedule properly tomorrow?
GLEN: Yeah, I can do that.
She dispenses one pill into his hand, and he swallows it. Harlow says she'll see him tomorrow.
Lassiter's Complex
Pierce approaches Nicolette, who's clearing tables outside Harold's.
NICOLETTE: Pierce. How are you?
PIERCE: Well, I've commissioned a wedding cake from a bakery in The City. So, you're off the hook this week.
NICOLETTE: I don't want to be off the hook! I really want to do this.
PIERCE: Well, let me make this clear, alright? Your services are no longer needed.
NICOLETTE: Was that Hendrix's decision, or is this a Pierce Greyson initiative?
PIERCE: Well, that's not your concern.
NICOLETTE: Well, it's not your wedding. So you don't get to decide who makes the cake.
PIERCE (laughs): Don't pretend that you care about my son!
NICOLETTE: I care deeply about your son!
PIERCE: You ruined my marriage, without any thought about how that would affect Hendrix!
NICOLETTE: (...) Pierce, you ruined your own marriage by having an affair! This isn't about Hendrix; this is about your stupid grudge with me.
PIERCE: No, this is about protecting a really important day for my son, by keeping someone as toxic as you away from him.
NICOLETTE: Oh, you want to talk about toxic?! Why don't you take a long, hard look in the mirror, Pierce, because you've done way more damage to Hendrix than I ever could have.
PIERCE: You don't know what you're talking about.
NICOLETTE: I just know that you throw money around because you've got nothing to offer anyone. And if you think that's gonna make up for the fact that you were not present in your son's life when he was growing up, then you are deluded!
Kiri, who has just emerged from Harold's, hears this last statement of Nicolette's unseen by Nic, and looks upset, before walking away.
NICOLETTE: And you know what? Hendrix is way too smart to ever want a meaningful relationship with someone like you.
PIERCE: Well, my son doesn't need you in his life. So, you're not only off the hook with the cake - you're uninvited to the wedding.
Pierce walks away, leaving Nicolette fuming.
