The Waterhole
Mackenzie has joined Toadie and Melanie at the pub, and joins in in slating Angela Lane, saying she's a hypocrite after all her talk of having changed. Toadie's worried his reputation is shot, and wants to go and see Angela and give her a piece of his mind. But Mackenzie says this is a bad idea.
MACKENZIE: She'll end up looking like a victim. She'll probably call the police.
TOADIE: I just want to let her know how disappointed I am at her.
MELANIE: You don't deserve this. You even found her another lawyer to get her daughter off those latest charges. She should be thanking you.
Mackenzie suggests they all forget about Angela for now, and focus on Brent's hearing, which is today. Toadie agrees that's all that matters today.
Remand Centre
Harlow is visiting Brent. She suggests he rehearse the statement he's due to give to the judge, but Brent says it'll just make him more nervous. He apologises to Harlow for having to go through this, but she assures him that even if he does go to jail, she'll come and visit him; they can count the days until he's out.
BRENT: Yeah. You know, in the meantime, you should probably move back in with your family. They'll be there to support you. That's coming from a guy that's never had that before.
Harlow doesn't respond to this, instead suggesting she text Toadie and ask him to give her a lift to the courthouse later.
BRENT: Actually, I don't want you coming to my hearing.
HARLOW: What?
BRENT: I want to be the one to tell you what happens.
HARLOW: No, I don't want you going through this alone.
BRENT: Look, you being there, that won't change anything, okay? It'll make me stress out about how you're gonna cope with everything.
HARLOW: I can cope just fine. I just want to be there for you.
But Brent pleads with her not to come, so Harlow reluctantly agrees.
The Flamingo Bar
Roxy miserably tells Kyle about how Amy didn't even want to look at her ideas for the bar; she just wants someone to do the grunt work. But Roxy quickly changes the subject when Amy herself comes in, asking Kyle what she can get him.
AMY: How about a drink a long, long way away from my bar?
Amy claims that Kyle's peeling face is scaring away the customers! Kyle objects to being kicked out, saying he only sustained the injuries in the first place trying to drum up business for the bar.
AMY: I'll happily shout you a drink - once this stops scaring people.
Kyle grudgingly leaves, just as Tim Collins is coming in. Tim chats to Amy; we learn he was at the bar last night, and far from being hungover today, has 'never felt better'.
TIM COLLINS: And that's thanks to you.
AMY: Oh! Was there any particular part of the service that gave you such a good impression?
TIM COLLINS: Well, let's just say it was the very scintillating and useful conversation.
AMY (perplexed): Huh...
Lassiter's Complex
Susan and Karl run into Toadie, and ask how Brent's hearing went. He won't be drawn, saying they've just finished up but that Brent wants to tell Harlow the news before anyone else hears it. Toadie starts moaning about Angela Lane having got him kicked off the Carmello case by telling him about Toadie and Melanie's affair. Susan and Karl express their condolences, and leave. Tim Collins turns up.
TIM COLLINS: Ah. Spruiking for business? Suppose you have to, now you've been kicked off the Carmello gig.
TOADIE: If you've got somewhere to be, Tim, please don't let me hold you up.
TIM COLLINS: Oh, you bet I do - I've got to get up to speed on the case. There's a lot of reading to plough through, isn't there?
TOADIE: They wheeled you out to replace me?
TIM COLLINS: Well, I mean, it's a shame how it all happened. But someone had to stand up for professional integrity! And that person was me.
TOADIE: Angela Lane came running straight to you, didn't she?
TIM COLLINS: Oh, I never confirm or deny a source, Toad.
TOADIE (laughs): Wow. I get kicked off for being inappropriate, and then they go and hire the dodgiest operator around. This is just perfect (!)
TIM COLLINS: Well, you were the one out there hunting cougars.
TOADIE: Watch yourself, Tim.
TIM COLLINS: You know, if you're gonna make a shot for the big league, you might as well aim a little bit higher (...) No wonder they gave you the flick - talk about lack of ambition!
TOADIE: Good luck to you, Tim. And to Mr Carmello. Cos, you know, with you on board, he's gonna need it.
TIM COLLINS: Don't let the bitterness destroy you, Toadie.
TOADIE: I've got people around me that would never let that happen. I suppose that's probably the biggest difference between you and I. Cos I will always get another case. You will always be pathetic and alone.
Tim Collins looks like this has bothered him, as Toadie turns to leave.
No 22
Harlow is with Paul and Terese, waiting anxiously for news of Brent. At that moment, Toadie comes in with Brent himself. Harlow hugs him, and asks what happened.
BRENT: I've been released, but it's conditional.
HARLOW: So, a corrections order?
BRENT: No. I struck a deal with the judge. So instead of going to jail... I'm joining the army.
Paul smirks to himself, while Harlow and Terese look shocked.
No 30
Brent has accompanied Harlow back to Toadie's place to talk in private. He explains that Curtis suggested the army idea a couple of days ago; Brent didn't want to tell Harlow until it was a done deal.
HARLOW: The army's not exactly the safest place to be.
BRENT: It's better than jail.
HARLOW: Where are you going?
BRENT: New South Wales.
HARLOW: That's so far. For how long?
BRENT: ... A few years.
HARLOW: Brent, this is crazy!
BRENT: Look, I'll be able to have some structure, and routine. I'll be able to get a qualification, and I won't have an offence on my record that's gonna screw things up for me in the future. Look, this is gonna be the best for the both of us. Especially you.
HARLOW: You can't say that!
BRENT: Look, I don't want to be the one screwing up your life all the time. We both know if I didn't take this deal, that's how it would end up.
HARLOW: How long have we got before you leave?
BRENT: ... I'm booked on the train that leaves tonight. Harlow, it was part of the deal. I can't -
HARLOW (upset): So it's like you're going to jail anyway?! Brent, go! Seriously, go, because you're leaving me anyway!
Upset, Brent does as he's told and leaves the house. Harlow looks tearful.
Harold's Café
Toadie runs into Amy, and asks if she's seen Mel. Amy hasn't, but says she knows Toadie's had a 'shocker of a day', so wants to invite him and Mel to The Flamingo Bar later.
AMY: I need to make it up to you, cos it's kind of my fault.
We learn that the reason Tim Collins was so grateful to Amy was that she let slip to him last night about Toadie dating someone with 'a very distinctive laugh', not realising that it was supposed to be a secret. Tim Collins then put two and two together, tipped off Mr Carmello about Toadie and Mel's workplace relationship, and took the job for himself. Amy's apologetic, and Toadie's annoyed.
No 30
Harlow is sulking as Hendrix and Mackenzie come in, believing they have the house to themselves.
MACKENZIE: So I can wipe the floor with you even harder with my new controller?
HENDRIX: In your dreams.
It's then that they notice Harlow, and ask how Brent's hearing went. Harlow explains about Brent joining the army, and seeing she needs Mackenzie, Hendrix leaves to give them space to chat.
HARLOW: He leaves tonight. I might not get to see him for years. He thinks sacrificing himself is the best thing for me.
MACKENZIE: Maybe he's right. There's been so much drama, and everything about your own life has just been pushed to one side.
HARLOW: Yeah, because that's what you do for the people you care about.
MACKENZIE: Sometimes you also do whatever you can to spare them pain. I think what Brent's doing is actually really noble. And if you think about it, maybe you'll see that he's got a valid point.
The Flamingo Bar
Amy comes in, and tells Roxy to give Toadie and Melanie the full VIP treatment when they get here. Roxy has been looking at the new staff roster, and tells Amy she hasn't allowed for any staff breaks, as per strict Lassiter's policy. Roxy offers to amend the schedule for her accordingly, and Amy thanks her, saying it's good she can count on her.
This task (implausibly) takes Roxy all of 10 seconds. When Terese comes in, she praises Amy for having already finished the new roster, and is particularly impressed that she's scheduled in the breaks as per policy, even though Terese hadn't explained it to her. Roxy's annoyed when Amy just accepts the credit for this, without explaining that Roxy was the one who alerted her to this.
No 32
Brent has called round to say his goodbyes before leaving for the army.
DAVID: The next time you see us, you'll be keeping *us* in line.
JANE: (...) The defence force isn't a miracle cure. You'll get out of it as much as you put into it. And it will be hard work.
BRENT: If you really want to know how I'm feeling, I'm freaking out.
AARON: Oh, mate. Listen, this is such a huge decision you've made. And there's nothing wrong with saying you're scared.
DAVID: We're proud of you. I hope you know that.
BRENT: Yeah. Look, Toadie let me read the character references you guys wrote for me. They were so good, I actually thought maybe they were about someone else (...) It means a lot (to Jane) Especially from you. I wasn't expecting any of it, especially after the Nicolette situation.
JANE: I've always just wanted the best for you. That never changed.
Brent gets a text from Harlow, who wants to see him again, so has to leave.
BRENT: You guys better be sending me baby pictures when she arrives.
DAVID: Trust us, you'll be begging us to stop.
AARON: And that bunny you made is already in the nursery, waiting for her.
BRENT: Great. Look, I just wanted to say sorry for all the stress I put you guys through, seriously.
AARON: No, don't be. It's called being part of a family.
DAVID: And we're not looking back anyway. Concentrate on what you can control.
BRENT: Yeah, I will.
AARON: You've got this, mate. You just promise us that you'll take care of yourself, alright?
BRENT: I will.
David says they're only a phone call away, and hugs Brent. Aaron then hugs him too, wishing him luck, and he bids them all goodbye.
No 30
Brent is back to see Harlow.
HARLOW: Is this really what you want to do? Please be honest with me.
BRENT: Yeah. It is. If my only other option's jail, then, yeah. I just wish there was a better choice.
HARLOW: So do I. Are we breaking up? I guess we are.
BRENT: That's up to you. But I definitely want us to have a chance together in the future.
HARLOW: So we're pressing the pause button?
BRENT: Till I can be the version of me you deserve.
HARLOW: You already are.
BRENT: I'm not. I think we both know that.
She asks if they can stay in touch; he takes her hand.
BRENT: You say that like it's optional. Just give it a week before we start talking again. I just want to settle in.
They hug, and gaze at one another.
BRENT: If things weren't so intense now, I think I'd say, 'I love you'.
HARLOW: If things weren't so intense, I think I'd say it right back.
The Flamingo Bar
Roxy has set up a special table for Toadie and Melanie, as per Amy's instructions. Amy's not that impressed, saying it seems a little 'low-key', and Roxy sarcastically remarks that she could make a few calls and organise a marching band. But when Toadie and Mel come in, Amy is quick to tell Roxy that she can take it from here. Roxy looks annoyed as Amy presents them with their special table.
Amy explains that she's arranged this to apologise for having dropped them in it with Tim Collins and lost them the Carmello case.
TOADIE: The silver lining is that we don't have to hide anymore.
MELANIE: Well, I would drink to that. Except I don't have one!
Amy goes to fetch them some drinks.
No 22
Brent and Harlow are talking to Paul and Terese, prior to Brent's departure for the train to New South Wales.
BRENT (to Paul): I know we're not exactly friends, but I wanted to say thank you for everything that you've done for me. Seriously - I definitely couldn't have afforded a lawyer without you.
Paul looks mildly uncomfortable.
PAUL: You're welcome.
Harlow reveals that she wants to move back in at No 22, and asks if that's okay. Paul says of course it is, and then forces himself to shake Brent's hand, saying he hopes all goes well for him. As Harlow and Brent leave the house to go and pack up her things, Terese gives a slightly guilty-looking Paul a disapproving look.
Harold's Café
In the lakeside area, Kyle is preoccupied with his peeling face, while Roxy moans about Amy taking all the credit for her hard work.
ROXY: I know that I'm meant to just suck it up, and learn from my mentor. But she doesn't even want that to happen.
Tim Collins, who has been sitting at a nearby table, gets up to leave. It's not clear whether this is what has inspired Roxy to decide that 'sometimes, you have to play dirty to win'!
ROXY: Amy's still on trial. Her job's not permanent, so maybe it never will be.
KYLE: And you're just gonna sit back and let her stuff it up for herself? Or are we talking more like sabotage?
Roxy just smiles sweetly.
No 30
Brent's taxi has arrived to take him to the train station, and it's time for him to bid Harlow farewell.
HARLOW (upset): Brent, I hate this. I hate every part of this.
He gives her a mug, which matches the one she brought him back from London.
BRENT: So you don't forget who I am.
HARLOW: I could never forget you. Thanks. I love it.
BRENT: (...) Goodbye, Harlow.
He kisses her on the forehead, and they hold hands - then Brent leaves.
No 22
A sad song plays as a tearful, devastated Harlow returns home, in slow-motion. Paul and Terese rush to welcome her back. She sits on the sofa, looking sadly at the mug Brent bought her. As Harlow sobs on the sofa, Paul looks even guiltier than before. We cut back to Harlow, looking utterly bereft.
