The Waterhole
Kyle and Roxy are having a coffee following their cleaning spree at the tram, to erase any lingering trace of the death cap mushrooms.
ROXY: I'm sorry, Kyle.
KYLE: I know. You've said it about 500 times.
ROXY: We could've killed someone. *I* could've killed someone.
KYLE: Roxy...
ROXY: It's true.
KYLE: I didn't taste it either, okay? At the end of the day, the buck stops with me, so stop beating yourself up. Let's just keep it in the vault, okay?
Toadie comes in, and asks Roxy how Harlow is getting on following her kidnapping. Roxy confirms she's exhausted but okay. Toadie tells them Shane is getting discharged today, meanwhile, which Roxy is pleased to hear. Toadie thanks them for letting him help with making the roo pies, as it was a welcome distraction. But he doesn't mention that he took some home.
As Toadie leaves, Kyle mutters...
KYLE: I never want to hear the words 'mushroom', 'gravy' or 'roo pies' ever again.
Lassiter's Complex
Clive and Jane are out for a walk, hand-in-hand, enjoying no longer having to hide their relationship. But their serenity is short-lived, as they soon run into Des. He tries to talk to them, but...
JANE: Des, I think we've heard enough from you.
DES: I only want to apologise.
JANE: We've already heard it.
Clive and Jane walk away. Sheila, who has appeared nearby, sees this, and approaches Des.
SHEILA: I'm in the doghouse, too, for what it's worth.
DES: I've somehow managed to lose 60 years of combined friendship in less than a week.
SHEILA: I'm really sorry, Des, and it was all my fault.
DES: I'm the one who came up with the stupid fake date idea.
SHEILA: Yeah, but I'm the one who dragged you into helping me.
DES: We just have to accept their decision and, umm... move on.
Sheila looks guilty as Des leaves.
Erinsborough Hospital
Shane is in his hospital bed, and Amy sitting on it next to him, as Dipi stands nearby looking peeved, and David finishes an assessment of Shane's health. David is pleased with Shane's progress, and says he's definitely ready to be discharged. He offers to write up a pain management plan before Shane leaves, but Shane refuses any prescription painkillers.
SHANE: I can manage with the over-the-counter stuff. Don't want to tempt the demons.
David recommends a course of paracetamol and ibuprofen, and Amy memorises his instructions, promising to take care of it. But Dipi passive-aggressively says that she's sure she and Toadie can manage it - the clear implication being, without Amy's help.
Dipi tells Shane that Jay is on his way to see him, after she 'strongly advised' him they needed some family time. Dipi says they have a lot to discuss, so Amy goes to leave, promising she'll be back later. But she looks a little annoyed to be excluded as she goes, and overhears Dipi telling Shane how Jay has been avoiding her since he admitted all his misdemeanours.
SHANE: It's a shame it takes him putting his old man in hospital for him to finally fess up.
DIPI: Yeah. I guess all we can do is stay calm, and see what he has to say for himself.
SHANE (smiles): Parenting 101, hey?
Lassiter's Complex
Outside the pub, Roxy is excited to see that Kyle has an email from the Best Dish of Erinsborough competition - he's been chosen as one of the finalists. The next stage is a thorough inspection of the venue, to assess its sustainability credentials!
KYLE: They're gonna go through the tram with a fine-tooth comb!
ROXY: So what, it's spotless! The Queen could eat there.
KYLE: What about the mushrooms growing outside?
ROXY: I thought we weren't allowed to say that word anymore?
Roxy promises to 'rip out every single sucker' with her bare hands, but Kyle is feeling bad, and thinks they need to withdraw from the contest.
KYLE: It doesn't feel right anymore. I know Judge Jacinta loved our dish, but it could've killed her.
ROXY: What about your dad? You were doing it for him.
KYLE: Nah. The tram's more of a legacy than some competition. If any of this gets out, they'll shut down The 82, and I can't risk that.
Erinsborough Hospital
Still with Shane, Dipi gets a message from the Best Dish contest, too, telling her that she's also a finalist for her beetroot burgers. But when she sees that the tram is a fellow nominee, Dipi feels bad.
DIPI: Kyle's entered Gary's sausages, and I'm sure he's done it as a tribute to him. If I win, I'll be taking that away.
Outside, Jay and Mackenzie are approaching Shane's room. Jay really doesn't feel ready to see Shane, but Mackenzie tells him it'll be harder the longer he puts it off, and encourages him to take a deep breath. Jay goes in, and asks Shane how he's doing.
SHANE: Surviving.
DIPI: We're just a bit confused, about all of this behaviour. It's so unlike you.
SHANE: Is there stuff going on in Sydney you haven't told us about?
DIPI: Has anyone been pressuring you? Your friends?
JAY: ...
DIPI: Sweetheart, we're just trying to understand why you're doing all these things.
SHANE: Jay, we can't help if you're gonna stand there like a stunned mullet.
DIPI: Shane...
SHANE: No, there's no point tiptoeing around him if he's not gonna say anything. You've already admitted to what you've done. So just tell us why.
JAY: Why? So you can have even more of a go at me?
SHANE: If you think that's having a go, mate, you've got another thing coming.
JAY: I knew this was a bad idea.
DIPI: Jay...
Jay storms out, and Mackenzie, who has been loitering outside, tells Dipi and Shane she'll go after him.
Lassiter's Lake
Clive and Jane continue their walk. Jane's getting a bit tearful, and admits she's letting her emotions get the better of her over the fallout with Des and Sheila.
CLIVE: What you're feeling is perfectly natural.
JANE: Is it?
CLIVE: Yeah. You've lost friends, and you've done nothing wrong.
JANE: Same goes for you.
CLIVE: Yeah, I'm crying on the inside.
Unseen by them, Sheila is conveniently on hand again to look suitably contrite, as she overhears this.
JANE (to Clive): Oh, you do make me smile.
They continue their walk, as Sheila watches them guiltily.
Erinsborough Hospital
Dipi is with Shane still, and Toadie has now joined them. Dipi explains she's had to pull the necklace Pierce gave her from the online auction she'd set up to support the Sonya Foundation, as the police have retrieved it from Kane as evidence, and Dipi's not sure when they'll get it back. Toadie says they have more important concerns, like Jay.
TOADIE: I have looked into it from a legal standpoint (...) He can't be charged for being at the card game, but hiding the gun - that could be a different story.
SHANE: Yeah, just give us the worst-case scenario, mate.
TOADIE (sheepish): ... Umm, you know what? It's probably best just to wait until the police decide what they're gonna do.
DIPI: This is our fault. We sent him off to boarding school to fend for himself.
TOADIE: You can't blame yourself.
SHANE: We're his parents. Who else is there to blame?
DIPI: Sydney was a bad call. He has to finish school in Erinsborough. He needs us, Shane.
SHANE: Yeah, I agree.
Lassiter's Complex
Outside the pub, Kyle can tell Sheila's in a bad mood from the careless way she's collecting glasses. He remarks on it, but she bites his head off, so Kyle falls silent, exchanging a glance with Roxy.
Des turns up, and tells Sheila he's booked a flight home this afternoon; he doesn't see any point in hanging around. Sheila apologises again for involving him in her plan to win Clive back. But Des simply replies that what's done is done, and bids them goodbye.
The Waterhole
Kyle has come inside to head to the bar, where Dipi catches up with him. She congratulates him on getting through to the final of the Best Dish contest, saying it's 'an amazing tribute to Gary', and explains she's decided to withdraw from the race.
DIPI: It didn't feel right competing against Gary.
KYLE: Oh, Dad would've been stoked that you got through as well.
DIPI: Of course he would, but that's not the point. It's beautiful that you're giving him such a loving legacy, and there is no way I would want to interfere with that.
KYLE: I'm not gonna let you drop out.
DIPI: No, it's too late. It's already done. I cannot take it back even if I wanted to, which I don't.
KYLE: Dipi...
DIPI: Honestly, Kyle, it's fine. You are an amazing son, and I want you to win for the tram and for Gary. I'm sure he'll be watching on proudly.
Kyle smiles, touched by the gesture.
Harold's Caf é
Mackenzie tells a moping Jay that it might help if he explains to his parents why he's done the things he's done. He thinks his reason would sound like a 'lame excuse'.
JAY: It's not even that interesting. Pathetic is more like it.
MACKENZIE: Try me. Or at least use me as a test run. Jay, why did you do all of those things?
JAY: I was trying to fit in.
MACKENZIE: Fit in? With who? Hendrix?
JAY: Hendrix, Ollie, everyone. Told you it was pathetic.
MACKENZIE: It's not. I'm just trying to understand why you'd feel like you need to fit in.
JAY: It's what I do. Get in good with the popular kids so they don't pick on me. That's what I learned from primary school.
MACKENZIE: ... I see.
JAY: Yeah. And when I went to boarding school, I rebuilt myself as this cool guy, and it worked. No more bullying.
MACKENZIE: Survival of the fittest.
JAY: Exactly. So I did the same thing when I got here, but things with Hendrix got so out of control. When we tried to fix it, it got worse. And now everything's ruined.
MACKENZIE: Jay... the person you've been pretending to be, it's not the real you. It's a mask.
JAY: Maybe.
MACKENZIE: I mean, aren't you tired of trying to be someone you're not?
JAY: I'm exhausted.
MACKENZIE: If you can't accept yourself for who you are, how can you expect anyone else to?
JAY: Nobody likes who I really am.
MACKENZIE: I do. Your family does.
JAY: Not anymore.
MACKENZIE: The real you - Jay, I promise you - they do. I love you.
JAY: ... Maybe.
MACKENZIE: Your family and your real friends are the only ones who matter. Not some poseurs who let you pretend to be someone other than yourself.
Mackenzie takes Jay's hand, and they smile at one another.
Lassiter's Lake
Jane and Clive are sitting in the gazebo, when Sheila and Des arrive, wanting to speak to them.
SHEILA: Sorry to interrupt.
CLIVE: Are you?
SHEILA: It's not what you think. I just want both of you to know that I'm not gonna get in your way anymore. I'm done with that.
JANE: Is that a promise?
SHEILA: Cross my heart - what's left of it. And I also want you to know that Des was not responsible for any of this. It was all me.
CLIVE: Well, from where we were standing, this whole fake date involved you both.
DES: The date was my idea.
SHEILA: Yes, but I was the one who asked you to come all the way over from Perth. Anyway, I am fully responsible, and I am sincerely sorry. And if you want nothing to do with me, I understand. But honestly, I couldn't live with myself if I thought that what I'd done had ruined your friendship with Des. He's nothing but a gullible, naive fool.
DES: Yeah, alright, okay! They get the idea!
SHEILA: And I just couldn't rest easy until I knew that you three were all on good terms again. And you know that stress is not very good for my heart.
Clive gives Sheila a look.
CLIVE: Alright, Sheila. Enough.
DES: It wasn't all her fault. I had concerns. And instead of trusting what you said... (to Jane) I just didn't want to see you get hurt.
JANE: Kind of you to worry.
DES: I always have. And I was... I was wrong. You make a lovely couple. We've been mates for so long, I... I didn't want to lose either of you.
Harold's Caf é
Jay is still with Mackenzie, when Amy comes in, and asks if they can have a chat. Mackenzie goes to wait outside, as Amy joins Jay.
AMY: So, I guess you feel like the sky's falling in at the moment, huh?
JAY: Something like that.
AMY: Your parents are really disappointed and angry?
JAY: They are.
AMY: Well, I know it looks like that. But I think they're just scared.
JAY: Of what?
AMY: Of losing you, hon. Not being able to fix things. Not having all the answers.
JAY: Yeah, well, I haven't had all the answers, either. But I'm not too sure why you're a part of it.
Jay gets up to leave, but Amy asks him to stay and hear her out. Jay reluctantly sits back down again.
AMY: Look, I've learned something about Shane that might help (...) that he's a solutions man (...) He responds best to people who really own up to their mistakes, and work through them. Like, if you can somehow show him that you're taking responsibility for your actions, I think it'll really help with getting his respect back, you know?
JAY: So, what, own up to my mistakes? You really think that'll make a difference?
AMY: Yeah, I do.
JAY: Okay. Thanks.
AMY: That's okay. Have a good day.
Jay smiles as she gets up to leave.
No 26
In the back garden, Roxy is surprised to read on her phone that Dipi has dropped out of the Best Dish contest. She wonders if the organisers have accidentally taken out Dipi's name instead of Kyle's. But Kyle explains that he hasn't withdrawn after all, and tells Roxy about what Dipi said to him earlier about giving Gary's dish the best chance of winning.
KYLE: It reminded me of why I started this thing in the first place.
ROXY: For your dad.
KYLE: It's not like we put the bad mushrooms in on purpose.
ROXY: Yeah, of course not. That was an innocent mistake that I still feel absolutely horrible about.
KYLE: So do I, alright? But Jacinta's okay.
ROXY: Exactly.
KYLE: And we cleaned the tram from top to bottom, so there's no traces of the mushrooms.
ROXY: You really want to stay in the competition, don't you?
KYLE: Yeah. Yeah, I do. For Dad. But only if you're there with me.
ROXY: Fine. Let's do it. To make your dad proud.
They smile at one another.
Erinsborough Hospital
Jay is back to see Shane again, and finds Dipi still in the room when he arrives, helping Shane pack his things in preparation to be discharged.
JAY: I've been thinking about all the trouble I've made. I guess it's a lot to do with when I was at school in Sydney.
DIPI: Yeah. We thought it might have something to do with Sydney.
JAY: That's where it all started, and that's where it's gonna end. I'm gonna change things as soon as I get back there. I'm gonna take responsibility for all the bad choices I've made. Next time you see me, I'll be the Jay that'll make you proud.
SHANE: You're not going back, mate.
DIPI: (...) You need to stay here in Erinsborough, with your family.
JAY: Why? Because you don't think I can do it by myself?
DIPI: Not right now, we don't.
JAY: Wow. Well, it's nice to know where we stand (!)
SHANE: Where we stand is that you need to be where we can keep an eye on you.
JAY: Amy told me to step up and fix my mistakes - that that's what you'd want me to do.
DIPI: When did you speak to Amy?
JAY: I'm not gonna mess up again. But you've gotta give me a chance to prove that I can -
SHANE: Okay. The decision's made.
JAY: Whatever.
Jay walks out again. Dipi and Shane look worried.
Lassiter's Lake
The healing continues between Sheila, Des, Clive and Jane at the gazebo...
CLIVE: I'm glad we've cleared the air. I know more than anyone how Sheila can rub people up the wrong way. She has a habit of getting under your skin. It happens before you even know it.
SHEILA: I'm sitting right here!
CLIVE: Yeah, Sheila, I think now is the time for honesty, and being to the point.
SHEILA: And not even an ounce of tact?
CLIVE: We'll reassess at a later date. I think it's pretty black and white for the meantime.
SHEILA: I suppose I deserve that.
DES: And, yay, I can go back to Perth without a rift over my head!
JANE: I'm sorry to see you go, but I'm so glad that our friendship is back on track.
Des says fond farewells to the three of them, and heads off to catch up with Paul before his flight - leaving Sheila standing awkwardly with Clive and Jane.
SHEILA: Well... all's well that ends well!
JANE: Sheila, I'm - I understand the position that you're in, and that your feelings have been hurt...
SHEILA (sad): Well, they're my feelings to deal with now.
CLIVE: Unfortunately, that's the way it has to be.
JANE: We're not going to compromise our relationship anymore.
SHEILA: I understand. I've made a mess of things, and I'm really, really sorry.
CLIVE: Apology accepted.
As Clive and Jane walk away, Sheila sits down on the bench, and sobs quietly to herself.
The Waterhole
Toadie is with Amy at a table.
TOADIE: I should've invited you to my place for lunch. Roo pies from the tram!
AMY: Ah, it's probably best I avoid your place at the moment, in case Dipi drops in (...) It's just, like, uncomfortable, you know? Like, the ex-wife and the girlfriend, it doesn't exactly make for a beautiful friendship.
TOADIE: Yeah. She's got a bit going on at the moment - try not to take it personally.
AMY: Yeah, I know. It's complicated.
Amy's just telling Toadie how she finally did something right by giving Jay the pep-talk, when Dipi herself appears at the door, and storms over.
DIPI (to Amy): How dare you?! Speaking to my son when it's none of your business - putting stupid ideas into his head?
AMY: Dipi, no - I was trying to help.
DIPI: Help?! Is that what you call telling him to move back to Sydney?
AMY: What?!
TOADIE: Steady on, Dip.
DIPI (to Amy): No, this is my family, not yours. So back off!
Amy stares, horrified, at an angry Dipi.
