- Karl convinces Susan to go on holiday around Australia, so they can focus on their relationship
- Chloe tells David she's worried she may be developing symptoms of Huntington's disease
- Chloe tells Pierce her symptoms could be nothing; he says they'll get through it in any case
- Later, we see Chloe taking a pregnancy test - it's positive
- After TITTNL with Shaun, Elly worries that Aster will always pay for her mistakes
- Shaun has the ideal solution - to move to Switzerland with him!
Elly is trying to settle Aster in her pram, while Bea makes tea. Shaun comes in and offers to take Aster, so that Elly can rest, given that her court hearing is tomorrow. Once Shaun has taken Aster, Bea remarks to Elly that she and Shaun seem to be 'dancing around each other'.
BEA: How long are you gonna pretend like nothing's going on?
ELLY: Okay, thanks have progressed...
BEA: Yes, I called it! (...) I'm happy for you. If that's what you want.
Elly says it is, but that she doesn't want to get too carried away until the hearing is over.
BEA: Well, Toadie said not to worry.
ELLY: Well, Toadie's said that before.
But Bea encourages her to focus on the future.
Chloe is in the kitchen looking worriedly at the positive pregnancy test, when Pierce emerges. She quickly hides it in her dressing gown. He guesses she's worrying about her Huntington's tests, and tries to reassure her, saying they'll more than likely confirm the disease hasn't progressed.
He suggests they go to bed and watch some mindless reality TV to send them to sleep. Chloe says this sounds perfect, but looks worried again as Pierce leaves the room.
Elly and Toadie come in having just attended the hearing, and tell Shaun the verdict. It's good news, as the court has decided that Elly's sentence has been covered by her time served. However, she's upset that she'll never be able to teach again; Toadie says it's a blow, but one that was to be expected.
Elly is, however, free to go overseas - and Toadie offers to set about organising a Swiss visa, as Elly has told him about her tentative plans with Shaun. She says she needs more information before making a decision.
TOADIE: You do realise this is going to ruin my dreams of Hugo and Aster becoming the next power couple?
ELLY: It'll have to be an international love affair - hands across the ocean!
Shaun takes Aster into the garden for some sunshine, and Toadie tells Elly he's a 'top bloke'.
ELLY: Yeah, it's early days, but it feels right. Thank you for today.
TOADIE: I've worked on some cases, and umm... this one's been a shocker! I am as glad as you that it's over.
ELLY: Yeah, well, despite everything, you never gave up. Not even when I wanted to. So I'll never forget that.
Toadie looks like he doesn't think he deserves the praise on this one!
Elly joins Shaun and Aster in the garden. Shaun is glad Elly is considering Switzerland.
SHAUN: When I visited Mum yesterday, she asked if I'm ready to take over the family business again (...) I haven't said yes, but there's a lot to like about the idea. Could be *our* family business, for one.
ELLY: And Claudia definitely wouldn't have anything to do with it?
SHAUN: She's been removed from the company. Even once she gets out of prison, they'll never take her back.
Elly admits she knows little about business, but Shaun says she's smart and good with people - he's sure they could find her a position. However, if Shaun wants to become CEO, he needs to give the company an answer by the end of the day. He says he could leave now, and Elly and Aster could follow whenever she's ready.
SHAUN: I know that this is big, and I won't do it without you. But maybe the timing of this is a sign.
Elly doesn't seem unkeen, but says she needs to speak to her family first.
Paul, Terese and Pierce are finishing up a meeting in the pub. Paul has another appointment with Pierce, Chloe and the accountants later, but Pierce tells him that he and Chloe won't be able to make it, as they have a 'personal appointment' to attend to.
Chloe is at the bar fetching a glass of water, and Terese goes over to join her. Terese asks if everything's okay, mentioning the appointment that Pierce has just told them about. Chloe doesn't go into specifics, but just says it's something that can't be put off.
As Terese leaves, Elly turns up with the pram.
ELLY: I really need your advice on something (...) Shaun has asked me and Aster to move to Switzerland with him, to become a family.
CHLOE: ... Wow! Are you considering it?
CHLOE: Well, Switzerland rules! I mean, the people are friendly, the cheese is to die for, Berlin's just a train ride away.
ELLY: Yeah, but what am I gonna do without you? And Bea? I don't even know where to begin to talk to her about it. And then there's Karl and Susan as well...
Stock footage of the beach and river in Perth is followed by the arrival of Karl in a restaurant. He's not a paying punter (naturally!) but has just come in to take pictures of himself in front of the Perth skyline, of which the restaurant has a panoramic view, using his selfie stick! However, as he's taking the picture, he notices a familiar woman at a table, wiping tears from her eyes.
JANE: Oh, Karl!
KARL: What are you doing in Perth? I thought you were in London.
JANE: It's so wonderful to see a familiar face.
Karl sits down to join her; he explains he and Susan have just come from Tasmania.
KARL: How's Des? We leave tomorrow, but we could catch up for breakfast?
JANE: Des isn't here... We broke up.
KARL: Oh, no - oh, I'm so sorry.
JANE (tearful): Yes, so am I. It's all still rather fresh.
KARL: But you seemed so happy and in love?
JANE: Well, sometimes it's just not enough.
Shortly afterwards, Jane apologises for interrupting Karl's holiday by 'falling apart' on him, acknowledging that they don't even really know one another that well! Karl wishes he could help.
JANE: There's nothing to be done. Everything seemed so perfect - reunited again, in love, after all this time, and... I knew that there'd be challenges.
KARL: Well, that's only natural at this age, you know. The start of any marriage is a learning curve.
JANE: This must be difficult for you to relate to. I mean, you and Susan have had such a strong and successful partnership.
KARL: Yeah, well, we've had our ups and downs... In fact, we're on this trip to get through a rough patch. Are you sure you can't work things out with Des? From the little you've told me, your issues don't seem insurmountable (...) What happened?
Jane is crying again.
JANE: Oh, it's complicated. And if I'm honest, I suppose after the ordeal of being catfished, I was desperate for a fairytale ending. I honestly thought that he would be my partner for life, but... well, it just wasn't Meant To Be.
Jane is really inconsolable.
Chloe is in the office when Terese turns up. Chloe is looking miserable, and admits she's heard Elly is moving to Switzerland with Shaun.
CHLOE: It's the break she needs. But I'm gonna miss her like crazy. And as selfish as it sounds, I kind of need my bestie around me right now.
Terese says Chloe seems anxious about her appointment. Chloe admits she's been having symptoms which may suggest onset of Huntington's disease, and that she's seeing a neurologist and having tests.
CHLOE: I'm also pregnant.
Terese looks shocked.
Pierce is at the bar. A call comes through from Paul on his mobile, but Pierce declines it and sighs. Toadie turns up; he's been trying to get hold of Chloe about the plans for Murder Islandā¢, but Pierce rather abruptly says she has a lot on her plate and will get back to Toadie when she can.
Toadie immediately guesses something's up with Chloe, and offers a friendly ear. Pierce admits that there's a chance her Huntington's may be progressing, and explains about the tests she's having.
TOADIE: Waiting on results is hard.
PIERCE: Mm. Well, it's a million times harder for Chloe. I promised her that I'd be strong if we get bad news, but... what if I can't be?
TOADIE: Well, then you'd be human. I lost the plot around Sonya heaps of times, mate. Nothing can really prepare you for this kind of stuff. But you know what? You'd also be surprised at how much you can take on when you need to.
In the garden, Shaun is showing Bea a video of Aster on his phone. Bea teases Shaun about the amount of time it's taken for him and Elly to get together.
SHAUN: You cool with it?
BEA: I'm rapt for you. And after everything Elly's been through, I just... I think she deserves happiness. But if you hurt her, I will cut you.
SHAUN (laughs): I genuinely believe that!
Bea's still holding Shaun's phone, when it receives a message from Toadie about Elly and her visa. Bea asks Shaun what's going on. His smile fades, as he's forced to explain that he and Elly are thinking of moving to Switzerland. Bea is angry.
BEA: When were either of you gonna tell me this?
Shaun explains that nothing's decided; Elly wanted to talk to Bea about it first.
In the office, Terese and Chloe are chatting. Terese tells her not to fear the worst, as the symptoms she's described - including forgetting Ned worked at the hotel - could be a result of the pregnancy and 'baby brain' rather than Huntington's progression.
TERESE: Either way, the scan will give you some clarity.
Terese wonders whether it's safe to have a scan when pregnant; Chloe says her specialist says so, but that she will check again with the technician. She also admits she hasn't spoken to Pierce about the pregnancy yet.
CHLOE: Keeping it from him feels so wrong, but I want to wait until after I've had the HD test to tell him, so we know what we're dealing with.
Paul comes in just as Chloe rushes out to her appointment, and he's keen to know what she and Terese were talking about. Terese says she's 'being supportive' and that it's nothing for Paul to worry about. He asks if it's to do with the hotel, but Terese doesn't elaborate. He looks intrigued as she leaves the room.
At the restaurant, Karl is still chatting to Jane; we learn Susan's back in the hotel room - AKA, Not In This Episodeā¢. Jane remarks that he and Susan seem to know each other so well.
KARL: Yeah. The good and the bad. Is there anyone looking out for you? I mean, do your friends and family know? I'm sure they'd like to support you.
JANE: No, umm... This is one of a long line of mistakes I've made. I can't pretend otherwise.
KARL: Well, what about Paul? He's your oldest friend.
JANE: No, no, no - I really don't want Paul to know. He would only feel responsible, for encouraging Des to come back to Erinsborough in the first place. Please, promise me you won't say anything?
KARL: I won't say a word. What are you gonna do now? Do you have a plan?
JANE: ... No. But I'm a survivor. I'll be okay.
Jane puts on a brave face, but it's not very convincing...
Elly is fussing over Aster in the garden, when Bea emerges to tear strips off her about the planned move to Switzerland. Elly insists she didn't mean for Bea to find out how she did; she was always going to tell her. But Bea is still angry.
BEA: I can't keep up! First Shaun decides to stay, and then you guys hook up. And suddenly, now the plan is to leave?
ELLY: Well, he's only just brought it up, okay? I haven't made a decision yet.
BEA: But you're definitely thinking about it?
ELLY: Yes, I am. It makes a lot of sense, Bea.
BEA: Really?! Because it seems completely ridiculous to me! After the year that you've had, the last thing you need is more upheaval.
ELLY: Or maybe it's exactly what I need. I'm not exactly kicking life goals here.
BEA: You need to give yourself a break! You're a new mum.
ELLY: Yes, and when I return to work, it won't be as a teacher, because my career is over!
BEA: Okay, I get that you're tempted to walk away. But you and I, we're strong enough to get through this - together!
Pierce and Chloe arrive. Pierce offers to come in with her for the chat with the neurologist, but a shifty Chloe tells him she'd rather do it on her own (presumably because she knows the pregnancy will come up in discussion). Pierce says that's fine; he'll hang out in the waiting area for as long as it takes. Chloe smiles, but looks worried as he walks off.
Elly tells Bea that the Switzerland move isn't just about her; she also has Shaun and Aster to consider. Taking over the family business is a great opportunity for Shaun, and the relationship feels right.
ELLY: We want to try and be a family.
BEA: And what about your family here? Me? Susan and Karl?
ELLY: I know. That's what makes this decision so hard. But after everything that's happened, this is my chance for a fresh start. For a new adventure. And I'm a little bit excited by the possibilities - can't you understand that?
Bea looks sad.
BEA: I think you're... you're rushing into things. But if this is really what you want... then I won't stand in your way.
Chloe comes out of her appointment and reports back to Pierce. Her MRI scan has showed no signs of tissue deterioration, which means her Huntington's disease hasn't advanced.
PIERCE: Well, that's great! Did they say what's been causing your symptoms?
Chloe looks shifty, and says they're not sure - she could just be overworked. Pierce thinks she looks worried, but Chloe says to ignore her; she's just in shock to learn that everything is okay. But as Pierce leads the way out, she looks frustrated that she hasn't summoned up the courage to tell him she's pregnant.
In the garden, Elly is finishing up a phone call to Susan in Perth. Elly reports back to Shaun that Susan didn't say much on learning her Switzerland news.
ELLY: I think she's in shock. She's just worried that we're moving too fast.
SHAUN: What do you think?
ELLY: ... I'm ready. We're moving to Switzerland! We're going to live in Zurich! We're actually doing this!
Shaun says he'll go on ahead and prepare his place for Elly and Aster's arrival. But Elly suggests that they just go with him straight away.
SHAUN: Are you sure?
ELLY: Yes! Yeah, I want to start our life together.
SHAUN: So do I. I'll start checking flights.
As Shaun goes inside, Bea emerges. She still doesn't look happy about Elly's decision. Elly tells her that Karl and Susan are popping back to Erinsborough to say goodbye in person, before they continue on their travels to the Coonawarra. Apparently, they offered to curtail the trip so Bea wouldn't be alone - but Bea says she wouldn't allow them to do that.
BEA: I'm gonna miss you so much. But I understand why you need to go.
ELLY: You're gonna be the hardest person to say goodbye to.
BEA: Ugh, don't make me cry. We don't have much time left, so let's just make every moment count.
In the office, Chloe updates Terese on the good news about her Huntington's - but admits that she still hasn't told Pierce about the pregnancy, despite being aware that he needs to know.
TERESE: Well, I'm sure you'll find the right moment.
Terese shows Chloe some research she's been doing on her laptop about what her Huntington's could mean for the baby; Chloe says she's aware of all the risks, but that now it's real, she doesn't know what to do.
Paul comes in, and Terese quickly closes the laptop. He tells them Pierce is ready for them both for another meeting. Chloe and Terese head off to meet Pierce, while Paul lingers behind on the pretext of needing to make a phone call. Once they've gone, he opens the laptop and is surprised to see the website Terese has been looking at, about Huntington's disease and pregnancy.
