Number 26 Backyard
Sheila is meant to be putting washing on the line but finds herself staring into space. She eventually gets back to her task, but the next item out of the basket is Gary's t-shirt. Tears immediately spring to her eyes and she cradles the t-shirt to her chest, sobbing.
Erinsborough Hospital
Paul and Terese tell Ned, Aaron and David the awful news about Prue's death. The police told them it was an explosion but they don't know what caused it. Aaron wonders what Prue was doing in the middle of nowhere, but Paul says she was following Gary to the island.
DAVID: Do you think it was intentional, like someone tampered with the car?
PAUL: It's possible, but who'd do that?
DAVID: It's hard not to consider Finn after everything he's done.
NED: Yeah, sounds right up his alley.
Paul says guessing games aren't going to help anyone. The police will update them when they know more. In the meantime, everyone looks into Harlow's room feeling extremely sorry for the young girl. "Just when you think it couldn't get any worse," quips Ned. Terese sighs in agreement, "She doesn't deserve this."
Number 26
Sheila is on a phone call to the police, extremely frustrated and upset. Clive walks in and Kyle informs him that the cops have found Gary's body and are doing an autopsy. Sheila hangs up the phone and Kyle asks what's going on.
SHEILA: (angry) Well, Gary's on a cold, hard slab and people are poking holes into him!
CLIVE: It's always done with respect, Sheila, I promise you that.
KYLE: Did they say anything about the cause of death?
SHEILA: No, they won't tell me anything.
KYLE: Do they have any idea?
SHEILA: No!
KYLE: Did you ask?
SHEILA: Of course I asked, Kyle! I want to know what that monster did to him!
Lassiters Complex
Hendrix sees Ned emerge from Harold's Café (doing a food run for everyone at the hospital), and asks how Harlow is going. Ned says they're taking her out of the induced coma so they'll find out soon. Hendrix wonders how long that will take but Ned says it'll be a few hours before the meds have worn off.
HENDRIX: I found this anti-venom and poison specialist up in Darwin. Dad would totally fly them down...
NED: It's okay, mate, Paul and Terese have got it covered. They're looking after her.
HENDRIX: Ned, I can help too.
NED: Look mate, I'm guessing you want to rush in head-first, protect your girl, save the day right?
HENDRIX: Exactly, yes.
NED: Yeah I've been there.
HENDRIX: So you get it.
NED: Normally I'm the one getting this talk, not giving it, but maybe the best way you can help is to give the family some space.
HENDRIX: I don't know if I'd call that helpful.
NED: Let me put it another way - maybe setting Paul off isn't what Harlow needs right now.
Hendrix says he thinks Prue would be cool with him being involved and is all set to make a phone call until Ned hastily stops him. "We've had some news," says Ned. "It's not good."
Erinsborough Police Station
Sheila is pressing the buzzer on the counter but no one is there to speak with her. Mark sees her on his way in and goes to hug her but Sheila backs off; she's not there for sympathy, she's there to get information about Gary's autopsy. She thinks Mark was at the coroner's office but Mark says he was just dropping Paige off at the airport. He does tell her the autopsy will be done by the end of the day, though, so they'll have more news soon.
SHEILA: What does soon mean to you lot? Is it today? Tomorrow? In three months' time?
MARK: I'm sorry if you think this is taking too long.
SHEILA: I am sick to death of hearing the word sorry! I just want to know what's happened!
MARK: We're working as quickly as we can, but we're just a bit snowed under with everything that's happened with Finn and now Prue.
SHEILA: Ugh, trust her to still be causing trouble. What has she done now?
Mark takes a deep breath, preparing to tell Sheila the news.
Erinsborough Hospital
Paul and Terese watch Harlow, waiting for any signs of her waking up. Paul says she looks so frail with the ventilator. Terese says it won't be for too much longer, but at least in this state she'll be protected from grief. Terese thinks they should use this time to work out the best way to tell her about Prue's death, which makes Paul sigh. He wishes Harlow didn't have to endure such horrific news; she's been through enough trauma already. David, who has been hovering near the doorway, tells Aaron that the sedation will wear off soon. Aaron suggests they swing by Bea's room.
DAVID: What if she doesn't want to see me?
AARON: What?
DAVID: I let Finn see Harry. That could have jolted his memory.
AARON: Hey, Boo, this is not on you.
DAVID: I could tell something was off with Finn. Maybe if I'd pushed and gotten to the bottom of it, no one would have got hurt.
Ned returns with the food and overhears them.
NED: Mate, with Finn someone was always going to get hurt.
AARON: Exactly.
NED: He probably had it planned longer than anyone realised. The whole memory loss thing seemed way too convenient for me. I would be surprised if he faked the whole thing.
AARON: No, no, there were loads of experts that checked out Finn and everyone agreed that his amnesia was real.
NED: I'm just saying, no one had better form when it came to deceiving people. I wouldn't put anything past him.
David looks upset. Aaron reminds him that he's not even meant to be back at work yet and is about to suggest they head home when Paul rushes out, telling David to come and check on Harlow. Machines are beeping and Harlow's groggy and startled, trying to yank the breathing tube out her throat. David attempts to calm her down and sends Paul and Terese out the room while other medics flood in to help.
A short while later David finds Paul, Terese, Ned and Aaron in the waiting area and tells them that the anti-venom is working but Harlow is still quite fragile. Terese asks what the next step is and David says they need to avoid putting stress on her heart. Ned chimes in that Harlow needs to know about her mum but David wants to wait for her tests to come back before they see what they're dealing with.
PAUL: She is going to have a lot of questions. Like how she got here, what happened to everybody - she's going to expect to see her mum, I can't lie to her.
DAVID: We need to stall until she's stronger.
TERESE: It'll be hard but I think it's best going forward. Nobody says anything to Harlow about Prue, are we agreed?
Everyone nods. Ned says he'll give Roxy a call, she'll want to know Harlow's awake. Terese assures Paul they'll get through this, but more importantly, they'll get Harlow through it.
Number 24
Hendrix is playing video games in an attempt to distract himself. Mark offers to make him some lunch but Hendrix says Pierce left him money to get takeaway; his dad is working late to cover for Paul and Terese.
MARK: How are you going?
HENDRIX: Three washes later and my clothes have finally stopped smelling like smoke and seawater, so that's a win.
MARK: What happened on the island was pretty full on. Might help to talk it out?
HENDRIX: I just can't believe this is all happening to Harlow. Now everyone's telling me to stay away from her.
MARK: They know what's best for her.
HENDRIX: I just hate how everyone else gets to call the shots, it's just like the island! Being told to stay behind while other people run in... You know, she's in hospital because of me. Because I was an idiot. And now I'm being told to stay behind all over again. I feel useless.
MARK: I get it, mate, I do. But I think now's the time for family, so maybe it's best to leave it to Paul and Terese.
Hendrix says he supposes so, then decides to go and hang out with Pierce at work. Mark nods and says whatever helps Hendrix get his mind off things.
Number 26 Backyard
Clive brings Sheila out a cuppa. He clarifies with her that the car Prue was driving was the one Gary bought. Sheila says it was, commenting on how much kerfuffle it caused and now it's gone, just like Prue and Gary. Clive takes Sheila's hand to comfort her.
SHEILA: Poor Gary. I suppose he loved her. I hope he did. Do you think they'll be in the same place?
CLIVE: You mean the afterlife?
SHEILA: Well, Prue's probably downstairs, and Finn definitely is. Gary...
CLIVE: Well what would you wish for him?
SHEILA: To be with Frank. Wherever he is. Swapping daggy jokes and telling each other really, really long stories.
CLIVE: Everything Gary did came from the right place. Good intentions have to count.
SHEILA: They have to.
CLIVE: If there is an upstairs I hope they've got a daggy sense of humour.
Sheila gives him a small smile.
Number 32
Kyle finishes a phone call with Honga, thanking him for the support and telling him they'll let him know when the funeral is. Aaron and David get home and notice the packed bags near Kyle's feet. Kyle apologises for the short notice but says he's moving back in with Sheila. The boys say it's fine, they thought he might have come to that decision. Aaron offers him a hand packing up but Kyle says he's got it covered, happy to have something else to focus on. David asks if he's had much chance to sleep, making Kyle sigh.
KYLE: I try, but when I close my eyes I'm in that mineshaft just wondering what's happened to dad. I might as well still be down there at this rate. We're hanging out for word on the autopsy.
AARON: Kyle you know Mark's got your back in all this, yeah? I'm sure he'll get you the information as soon as he can.
KYLE: (upset) I just need to know that he didn't suffer. That it was quick.
David and Aaron say they'll miss having Kyle around. Kyle picks up his bags to leave, saying he'll be back for more stuff later. David comments to Aaron that it's good Sheila and Kyle will have each other now.
Number 26
Kyle tells Sheila and Clive that he put his stuff in Amy's old room. Sheila says it'll be nice having Kyle around; it would have been too quiet otherwise. She got used to hearing Gary get up of a night and raid the fridge. Kyle gives her a sad smile and says his dad made the best toasties. Clive answers a knock at the door and finds Mark on the other side. Mark's got news of Gary's autopsy and says they all might want to grab a seat.
MARK: None of this is going to be easy to hear. The preliminary findings state that Gary was... Gary was shot in the back with an arrow.
CLIVE: And they're certain it was Finn?
MARK: Forensics found a bloodied shirt of his in Elly's car up at the cabin. It was Gary's blood.
SHEILA: (shattered) But how would Finn even get hold of an arrow?
MARK: We're still piecing everything together.
Kyle is absolutely stunned and distraught.
KYLE: I asked Toadie to leave the archery set behind. Finn must have picked it up and used it. (He takes in a shaky breath) Was it quick?
MARK: I hope so.
Sheila starts to cry. Kyle becomes more emotional and leaves the house.
Erinsborough Hospital
Hendrix sneaks into Harlow's room, surprised to find her awake. She gives him a soft smile and says, "You're here." Hendrix tries not to get upset and says he's sorry, but Harlow's confused, not understanding what he's done. He says he feels awful for letting her go off alone at the campsite.
HENDRIX: I've been so worried about you. I hate myself for what I did.
HARLOW: It's all so hazy though, the island. I walked off and then... And then Bea! What happened to her, is she okay?
HENDRIX: She's all right. Her leg's busted but they're treating it. She's just down the hall.
HARLOW: (starting to get upset) And Finn, he went crazy.
HENDRIX: Everyone knows. The police are involved and it's all under control, I promise.
Out near the nurse's station, Mark finds David and asks if Harlow's ready to give her statement. David replies that it'll be at least another day. Paul and Terese say they haven't even been able to speak with her themselves yet. Mark understands but says they will need to update her on her mum at some stage. Paul's adamant they not say anything about Prue until Harlow's stronger, but Mark has more news about Prue's death.
MARK: The car explosion, it was a bomb.
TERESE: A bomb?
MARK: Most likely put there by Finn.
PAUL: How do you know?
MARK: Harry Sinclair showed us where he dumped all the materials that Finn had hidden in a storage locker.
TERESE: Can you tell if it's the same material that was used in the car?
MARK: We're cross-checking them with fragments from the explosion but it's looking like a match.
PAUL: But why would Finn want to blow up that car? Targeting Prue is bizarre, even for somebody as unhinged as him.
TERESE: I didn't even know that they'd crossed paths.
MARK: Let's hope that forensics can clear this up.
Paul gets a quick phone call from Pierce who is trying to track down Hendrix. Mark is confused as Hendrix told him earlier he was going to visit his dad. The three of them soon realise the one place Hendrix will be. Paul's concerned Hendrix will tell Harlow about Prue and rushes off with Terese in tow.
They reach Harlow's room and and go in to say hello before Paul takes Hendrix outside for a talk.
PAUL: Did you say anything to her about Prue or Gary?
HENDRIX: It's not my place.
PAUL: No, no it isn't.
HENDRIX: So why would I without talking to you first? Paul, I care about her. I don't want to hurt her. (Paul nods) So when are you going to tell her the truth?
PAUL: When she's strong enough to handle it. And not one second before, do you understand?
Number 32
Kyle is packing up more boxes but can't help thinking of the time he had with Gary on the island, talking about taking a trip together and going fishing. Kyle gets progressively more upset, especially when he remembers asking Toadie to leave the archery set on the island. Emotions overwhelming him, he picks up a vase of condolence flowers and smashes them on the ground before he crumbles to the floor, crying.
Number 26
Sheila tells Clive that it was one thing to lose Gary, but to find out it was so violent was something else entirely. But then again, what else would they expect from a complete monster like Finn.
SHEILA: There was absolutely no good in Finn at all. What that animal did to my Xanthe, he should have been locked up and thrown away the key ages ago. If they'd done that, Harlow would still have a mother and I'd still have a son!
Kyle walks in with a box and slams it down on the kitchen table.
KYLE: If I wasn't so pig-headed he'd still be here too.
SHEILA: This is not your fault, love.
KYLE: One of the last things I ever did with dad was almost come to blows with him.
SHEILA: Yes but you made up.
KYLE: If I didn't kick up a fuss about Prue he wouldn't have been there! He wouldn't have gotten in Finn's way. I should have settled things before. And the archery set...
SHEILA: Would you stop it! None of this is your fault. You are not the person who brought that psychopath back into our lives. That blame sits with somebody else and I'm gonna make sure she knows it.
Erinsborough Hospital
Paul, Terese, David and Ned are in with Harlow. Paul puts a bag on the bed and Terese says that Roxy (who is currently down at the gift shop obsessing over choosing the perfect recovery gift) packed her some things. Harlow remembers that Roxy was down the mineshaft with her, then asks if Gary was there too.
HARLOW: Actually something weird happened. I remember hearing him but not seeing his face. Is he okay? (Everyone remains silent) Well I'm sure mum will know. Has she come yet?
DAVID: There's plenty of time to talk through all of that.
HARLOW: Why are you all looking at each other like that?
DAVID: Probably because they need some rest too.
Ned says they need food as well and suggests they all head down to the Caféteria. They leave Harlow to rummage through her bag. She's pleased Roxy remembered to charge her phone, and notices she has a voicemail from Prue - just as Paul returns to grab Terese's forgotten handbag. He freezes on the spot, looking guilty when Harlow innocently presses play on the message. Prue tells Harlow she's always been the most important thing in her life, but then Harlow becomes confused when Prue says Gary has walked out on her. Then Harlow's in shock when she can hear an explosion at the end of the message.
HARLOW: What's just happened? Where's mum? What's happened to her?!
