Erinsborough Police Station
Mark is interviewing Elly in the interrogation room!
MARK: You were standing over the grave when the police arrived.
ELLY: Yes. And you know that, because I've already told you.
MARK: I know this is frustrating.
ELLY: So why are you making me repeat myself?!
MARK: Elly, just do yourself a favour and cooperate, please. Is there any reason why you didn't stop on the way to the cabin and let someone know where you were going?
ELLY: Mark, I was chasing after my daughter! She was the only thing I could think about.
MARK: But when you knew she was safe, you made a decision to go after Finn instead of driving away with Susan.
ELLY: Finn took my baby from me! The thought of him getting away...
MARK: And what was your plan if you found him?
ELLY: I dunno, I dunno - I hadn't thought that far ahead! Lucky I didn't have to; he was already dead.
MARK: So why did you start to bury him?
ELLY: Finn tortured me. He tortured my family and he never stopped. I had to make sure it was over. I had to make sure that he stayed in the ground. I didn't murder Finn. You believe me, don't you?
MARK: ... I want to, Elly.
He says he'll check the forensics and see if it confirms what she's told them.
Erinsborough Hospital
Roxy has fallen asleep next to a still-comatose Harlow's bed, while an exhausted Paul sits in a chair nearby. Terese comes in, and Paul goes out into the corridor to talk to her. Terese tells Paul there's still no word on Prue.
PAUL: Yeah, she's probably gone and joined some other cult.
TERESE: Well, I've told the police that she's missing. After everything we've been through, I don't like her being unaccounted for.
PAUL: Yeah, well, there's no indication that she actually made it to the island, is there?
TERESE: I'm sure she's fine. She still needs to know about Harlow. And Gary.
Terese gets upset at the thought of Gary's death, so Paul tells her to go and take some time out. But Terese wants to go and see Sheila and Kyle.
TERESE: How could this have happened?
No 26
Sheila and Kyle already have a visitor, Aaron - though Sheila's keeping to herself in the kitchen, washing dishes. Kyle's still shellshocked, and says he keeps expecting Gary to walk through the door. He tells Aaron that Xanthe 'lost it' when she found out.
KYLE: Finn's taken so much from her. But nothing as bad as this. She's gonna stay up north with Ben. Too many memories of Finn around here.
Terese arrives, and gives Kyle a hug. He explains Sheila isn't taking the news of Gary's death well. Terese goes into the kitchen and hugs a forlorn-looking Sheila, who cries in her arms.
Erinsborough Hospital
A nurse wheels Bea into Toadie's room in a wheelchair; she has a cast on her leg, and it's no longer hurting. Toadie's okay other than dehydration. He's taken a liking to the drip.
TOADIE: I was thinking of getting one for the office and just filling it full of coffee.
But Bea's not in a laughing mood, and asks after Susan. Toadie says she's worn out but otherwise okay. We learn that Karl has asked them both not to say anything to Susan about Elly being questioned by the police, so as not to worry her until she's stronger.
Bea's worried that Elly is being questioned a second time. Toadie asks if Elly took a lawyer with her to the station. Bea says she didn't want to, and Toadie looks worried.
BEA: Finn's dead, and he's still messing with us.
No 28
Karl finds Elly in the house, and asks how her police interview went; she explains they're just waiting for the forensics to come back. Elly wants to go and see Susan and Bea at the hospital and Karl says they can, but at that moment, Mark arrives with an update.
MARK: We have Finn's official cause of death. He drowned, secondary to blunt force trauma to his head and neck, which left him paralysed.
ELLY: So he had an accident - he fell and drowned. Is that what you're saying?
MARK: Whether or not it was an accident is yet to be determined. The first lot of forensics came through. Your fingerprints were found on the tap near the gravesite - something your statement didn't explain.
ELLY: Doesn't it?... I dunno, I must've forgotten. The tap was on; I turned it off. Mark...
KARL: It was a very stressful incident. You can't expect her to remember everything.
MARK: The full forensics report will be in soon. You're gonna have to come in for more questioning. Elly, I would be really careful how you answer those questions. If his death is ruled a homicide, there's a very serious risk you'll be implicated.
Lassiter's Complex
Lana and Sky are outside The Waterhole, having a drink. Lana says they'll have to put off their honeymoon.
LANA: Our wedding, and coming back here, has been crazy-awesome. But I've got that book tour.
SKY: Yeah, I've got work. And I've got to get back to the kids. I mean, I've already been here longer than I planned. It is funny how a place like this just pulls you right back in.
LANA: Aside from the low-rise jeans of 2004, it's like we've come full-circle!
SKY: Ugh, I wish we could delay reality just a little bit longer!
LANA: Maybe we can.
But they're interrupted when Sky receives a phone call from work...
Erinsborough Police Station
Paige has dropped by to see Mark, and gets talking about Elly.
PAIGE: If she's found guilty, you can hardly blame her.
MARK: Paige, if she's guilty, it's murder.
PAIGE: Finn kidnapped her baby! When Gabe was taken from me, I would've done absolutely anything to get him back.
MARK: Elly had Aster; she was safe.
PAIGE: Yeah, but Finn was still there. I mean, I can understand her wanting to make sure that it never happened again.
MARK: It's hard to believe how different everything felt a couple of days ago.
PAIGE: Mm-hm. All the weddings. Everyone was so happy. Now they're grieving for Gary, and Harlow's in hospital.
MARK: And it doesn't feel like we should be celebrating being married.
Paige wishes she could make things better, but Mark says she's here; there's nothing else she can do. They kiss, and hug.
Erinsborough Hospital
Bea is tearful as she lies in her hospital bed. She has a flashback to Finn bidding her goodbye, and then pushing her down the mineshaft on the island. She sobs, and Karl comes in and hugs her.
BEA (crying): He took everything from me! My future with him. My trust. And everyone that he hurt - Susan, and Elly, and Harlow. And Gary. I can't believe I let this happen!
KARL: No - no! None of this is your fault. We all regret letting him in our lives, but... it's no-one's fault. Okay?
He hugs her again as she continues to cry.
No 26
Roxy has turned up with burgers and tequila in a bid to cheer Kyle up. He looks thoroughly uncheered, but thanks her and says it's good.
KYLE: Especially the tequila.
Roxy comes into the kitchen, followed by Kyle and Aaron, and starts updating Sheila on happenings at The Waterhole, but it's clear Sheila's not in any state of mind to think about work right now.
AARON: Hey, Sheila, just so you know - everyone's here for you, yeah?
SHEILA: Everyone? (...) Gary's not here. I need some fresh air.
Sheila heads into the back yard. Aaron apologises for upsetting her; Kye says a walk might do her good.
Erinsborough Hospital
Sky is finally catching up with Toadie, who congratulates her on her wedding to Lana. He's impressed she got it all organised 'in one arvo'.
SKY: It's the only way to do it. No chance of any embarrassing family or friends crashing the party!
TOADIE: Yeah. Well, if you're referring to me, I was too busy drowning.
SKY: Almost drowning. Gosh, how far did you have to swim to get to the mainland?
TOADIE: I dunno. It felt like hours, but I couldn't stay in a sinking dinghy.
SKY: Well, you pulled a bit of a Harold Bishop surviving the water like that (...) Toadie, you are beyond lucky.
TOADIE: Hmm. Wish I could say the same for everyone.
Toadie looks upset. Sky says that Dylan and Harold have both been calling her to ask after him and send their best. Toadie thanks her for visiting him, saying she must be keen to get off on her honeymoon.
But actually, Sky's staying for a while, as Dylan is happy to have the kids for longer, and Lana's going on her book tour.
SKY: A last-minute job opportunity came through for me here, so...
TOADIE: Oh yeah? What's the job?
SKY: ...
Lassiter's Complex
Outside the police station, Elly and Karl are talking to Mark. Elly admits she's been stressing all night about not having mentioned turning the tap off. She's keen to know the police's thinking on the case. Mark is heading back to Adelaide tomorrow, but says...
MARK: My advice is get a lawyer. There's no certainty, but there's a chance that charges could be brought against you.
Karl and Elly are in disbelief that forgetting to mention the tap has led to this.
MARK: Karl, Elly was found burying a body - it's a crime. It's gonna be looked at closely - there's a lot of pressure from higher up.
At this point, Sky approaches.
SKY: Is this about the Finn Kelly case?
MARK: Sorry, it's police business.
SKY: Okay, then - well, perhaps I should formally introduce myself. I'm Senior Detective Mangel, and I'll be leading the investigation into this death.
Sky and Mark go inside to talk about it, leaving Elly and Karl shocked.
Erinsborough Police Station
Sky is explaining her rationale for becoming a detective, saying joining the force was a 'later-in-life thing'.
SKY: When Grandad moved up north to us, he was able to help out with my kids. Which meant I could get started on a career.
MARK: And police detective was the dream?
SKY: Well, I've always had a good sense of right and wrong. It used to get me in a lot of trouble.
Sky explains that the bosses wanted someone from interstate to take the case on, given the 'internal ruckus' it's causing. Mark admits the police and courts have both been copping flack for allowing Finn to be released back into society in the first place.
SKY: Yeah. Which is why everyone wants it to be dealt with correctly. I mean, it's a pretty sad situation. A victim of domestic and emotional abuse, possibly triggered into violent behaviour.
MARK: Hang on - you think she's guilty?
SKY: ... Do you?
MARK: It doesn't really matter what I think. But seeing as though you're asking - no, I don't. I know Elly. She said she didn't do it, so I believe her.
SKY: You know, from what I've been told, Mark, Elly has a pretty significant history of lying under pressure.
MARK: Look, just because there's a lot of public interest in this, doesn't mean that we need to be overzealous.
SKY: And I won't be. But I am gonna have to follow the evidence, wherever it leads.
At this point, Lana comes in - she's on her way to the airport, and wishes Sky luck with the case.
SKY: Yeah, it seems pretty straightforward. I think it'll be wrapped up in no time.
They hug, but Mark has heard this and looks concerned.
Erinsborough Hospital
Bea is asleep, and Elly is looking through the window into her room. Karl appears, and tells Elly that Bea feels responsible for everything Finn did, and is traumatised by what he's done to her.
ELLY: I should've known better. I've known him the longest. I should've done something.
KARL: Okay, enough of that. You and Bea, and Susan, need to go easy on yourselves.
ELLY: Let's hope the police go easy on me, too.
KARL: (...) I've known Sky Mangel since she was a teenager. She's very reasonable. With her leading the case, there should be nothing to worry about.
Harold's Café
But Mark's interpretation is different; he tells Paige that because the police are keen not to be found at fault again over Finn, Elly will be 'put through the wringer'. If Sky's being pressurised by bosses, he says, she'll more than likely make a rash decision.
MARK: I want to stay in town and help out on the investigation.
PAIGE: So much for our honeymoon!
MARK: I know. I made a start on the case. I just want to make sure that it's handled correctly.
PAIGE: Do you think that you would be pushing so hard if the suspect wasn't Elly?
MARK: That's not what this is about, okay? Elly's a victim - she can't go to jail for a crime she didn't commit.
PAIGE: And you won't let your past history cloud your judgement?
MARK: I will keep it professional. I promise (...) Elly just needs someone to give her the benefit of the doubt.
PAIGE: Alright, well, if you think she's innocent, then you've got to do whatever you can.
Mark thanks her, and they kiss.
Erinsborough Hospital
Hendrix comes in with Pierce and Chloe, wanting to see Harlow, who's still comatose. But when Paul sees Hendrix, he's angry, reminding him he was told to stay away. Hendrix says he's worried about Harlow.
PAUL: That's rich! Considering you were the one that put her in hospital.
PIERCE: Hey, it's not his fault.
PAUL: All your son was interested in was getting into her pants - that's why he took her to the island, and that's why she is in a coma!
PIERCE: You're being unfair!
PAUL: No, what's unfair is my granddaughter lying there in a coma, while your son just lords around doing whatever the hell he wants! She could've died, do you know that?
Visibly gutted to have to leave, Hendrix nonetheless leads the way out, with Pierce and Chloe following behind him.
No 22
Paige is getting ready to leave, and Mark is folding her clothes to put in the suitcase.
PAIGE: Your way of folding?
MARK: The only way of folding, thank you.
PAIGE: I actually prefer the 'jam everything in a suitcase, squeeze the lid closed and hope it all fits in' way.
MARK: Oh, yuck! This is gonna be an ongoing problem between us, isn't it?
PAIGE: Well, maybe for you, when you have to redo all the household chores that I've already done.
But nonetheless, Mark says he can't wait to start their life together! Paige agrees, and they kiss.
MARK: I'll miss you.
PAIGE: I'll miss you more. But you'll be back in Adelaide in no time, and then we can do the whole wedding thing again.
MARK: Legally.
PAIGE: Yeah. With all our family. But until then, I will be packing up the house and moving.
MARK: Can I give you a hot tip?
PAIGE (groans): Oh, it's bubblewrap, isn't it?
MARK: Yeah, I'll get you some delivered.
PAIGE: I love you, husband.
MARK: I love you, wifey.
They kiss again.
No 26
Toadie is now out of hospital, and visiting Kyle and Sheila. Roxy is still there, and brings some tea in.
TOADIE: I keep thinking about all the things that I could've done.
SHEILA: Love, you put yourself through the wringer with Sonya; you don't need to do that again.
Toadie becomes tearful, thinking of Gary. Sheila gets tearful again, too.
TOADIE: It's not fair. He was such a generous bloke.
SHEILA: Well, I'm glad you came over. And I know you loved him. I was wondering if you'd speak at the funeral.
KYLE: We don't have to start thinking about all that yet.
But Sheila says it has to be done; they need to start making a list of all they need to do, including which suit they'll bury Gary in.
SHEILA: Do we even need a suit? Cos we don't even have a body yet...
Kyle is now crying, too.
Erinsborough Hospital
Karl and Elly are in the waiting area; Elly is feeling a bit better having spent some time with Aster at the lake earlier. Sky has arrived on the ward, and Mark comes in after her; he explains he's been given permission to stay in Erinsborough and be involved in the Finn case.
MARK: I just thought with the whole state breathing down your neck, you could do with extra help.
SKY: Great. Well, your timing couldn't be better. I need to inform the family; it'll be easier with you there.
MARK: Why, what's happened?
Meanwhile, Terese and Paul are sitting with Harlow. Terese wants to go and see Paige before she leaves, but tells Paul that she'll come back afterwards, so he can go for a break.
PAUL: No, if her mother won't turn up, the least I can do is be here, don't you think?
Mark and Sky come into the room.
SKY: We're here with an update. Prue Wallace has been found.
PAUL: Oh. About time!
TERESE: Where was she? In London?
SKY: I'm afraid not. Her car was located on a remote road, two days ago. It was nowhere near Erinsborough, so it was hard to make the connection. We also found a body. The forensics have made a positive identification.
PAUL: Body?
MARK: It seems as though there was some type of explosion. Prue was killed instantly.
Paul and Terese are horrified, and look towards a still unconscious Harlow.
