The History Wall
Yashvi defends to Ned her decision to involve the police with the fight club, saying he didn't have a plan himself. Ned's sure Kane is the one responsible for the graffiti, as Judd, the other speaking member of fight club, has already been taken in by the police.
NED: You had to know this could come back to bite you.
YASHVI: Well, I wasn't thinking about me. And even if it was Kane, who cares? It's just some lame threat on a wall. I'm surprised he got the spelling right.
At this moment, Shane and Dipi approach, fresh from their couple's massage and looking much more loved- up for it! Yashvi tries to deflect them away from the wall, but Ned suggests it's only going to do more harm, and they see the graffiti. Yashvi insists she's done the right thing but that someone has an issue with it. But Shane is worried that Yashvi's been targeted in this way.
In the kitchen, Roxy is filling Leo in on what he's missed while he's been away, including her relationship with Mark!
LEO: You and Mark? Mark Brennan and you?
LEO: Sorry, just - what did you guys even talk about?!
ROXY: Mm, yeah, because that's what it was about - the talking (!)
In the living room, Terese and Harlow are on the sofa. Paul comes downstairs, and Terese tries to get him to watch a baking show on TV with them.
TERESE: Apparently, there's a kid that made a Mount Vesuvius out of gingerbread.
PAUL: Yeah, I don't think so.
An obviously distracted Paul leaves the house. Leo comes in to join Terese and Harlow, noting that Paul seemed pretty tense.
TERESE: I know he's stressed about David, but I'm starting to worry he's starting to shut me out. Hey, maybe you could talk to him?
LEO: Oh, Dad and I haven't really been in a D&M place for a while now.
TERESE: Yeah, I know. That's why I'm asking you. Look, despite everything that's happened, your father still loves you. I'm sure he'd really appreciate it if you reached out.
Leo agrees to check in with Paul. While this has been going on, Harlow has moved into the kitchen with Roxy.
HARLOW: It's so unnerving.
ROXY: Finally looked in the mirror?
HARLOW: You know, Grandad is the most resilient person I know, but this... this is killing him. You have to get tested to see if you're a donor match for David.
ROXY: Wow - intense, much? Should I be worried that I'm gonna wake up in an ice bath?
HARLOW: Yeah, well, that won't be off the table if you're a match. I'd be gentle.
ROXY: It's not that big of a deal.
HARLOW: No, but... you really should. I would if I could.
ROXY: Yep, we know. Your halo is pretty hard to miss.
ROXY: Fine, fine! I'll get tested. But David's gonna be okay.
Yashvi, Ned, Dipi and Shane come out of the police station; Ned's been to make a statement about the fight club, and the police seem to have let him off without any official sanction, given he wasn't one of the organisers. Dipi thinks the police were blasé about the threat against Yashvi, but Yashvi points out that they had no evidence that Kane was the culprit - but at least they're looking into it.
SHANE: You and me need to have a chat, Ned.
Yashvi intervenes, pointing out that she was the one who chose to dob in the fight club - Ned had nothing to do with it. But Shane points out that this is the second time Yashvi's put herself in danger for Ned, following the knife incident with Scarlett. Dipi ushers Yashvi into the café.
SHANE: She's only in this mess cos of you. So you're gonna have to keep her safe.
SHANE: Well, she won't have a bar of me playing bodyguard. So I need your word that you won't let anything happen to her.
NED: Of course, I'd never... Thanks for trusting me.
SHANE: I don't. But I've got no choice.
Sheila is trying to lift Amy's spirits with a cake, a cuppa and a chat. Sheila's assuming that the reason Amy's feeling low is that she's sad she isn't pregnant.
SHEILA: But if the Canning men are known for one thing, it's their good swimmers, if you know what I mean. And before you know it, you're gonna be up to your ears in dirty nappies and baby wipes!
Gary enters with Kyle; Gary's also talking enthusiastically about the 'sleepless nights' they'll have to put up with when they do have a kid.
KYLE: Yeah, guess having a baby now might've been a bit full on. Hey, but once we start trying, we can be prepared and organised.
Kyle shows Amy a pregnancy app he's downloaded with a fertility tracker.
KYLE: So we know when to -
GARY: Yeah, yeah - alright, mate, we get the idea.
Amy is looking mortified, and Kyle senses he's going overboard. Sheila takes Gary outside to help her bring in the washing.
KYLE: Babe, what's going on? I thought we were on the same page - thought you wanted another baby.
AMY: I do. We were. I just... I feel like we should hit the brakes a little bit.
Kyle looks disappointed.
Harlow is waiting in reception for Roxy to come out of her kidney donor tests. Roxy emerges.
ROXY: The pathologist was hot!
ROXY: Like, Keanu hot. Like, Keanu avenging a dog's death hot.
ROXY: I like older guys, remember?
HARLOW: You were meant to give him your blood, not your phone number.
ROXY: I was appreciating the merchandise.
HARLOW: Just tell me the result.
ROXY: Prepare to be shocked. I passed the first two tests - which hasn't happened to me since I nailed the alphabet in grade two!
HARLOW: What about the third test?
ROXY: I was a pretty low match for tissue type, so I thought there was no point in comingling our bloods.
HARLOW: I mean, we're here now - may as well go all the way?
ROXY: Oh, Harlow, I didn't think you had it in you!
HARLOW: Oh, keep your pants on and focus.
Roxy agrees to go back in and do the third test.
ROXY: But contrary to popular belief, third time is not always a charm.
Sheila brings drinks for Ned and Yashvi, who are at a table outside the pub. Yashvi asks if Shane came on too heavy earlier, but Ned says it was fine.
YASHVI: Didn't he show you that old skull of his, and say, 'This is what happened to the last man that hurt my daughter?'
NED: No! What, a human skull?! Why does your dad have a human skull?
YASHVI: To scare off wimpy boyfriends!
NED: That is messed up!
But Kane is hiding in the bushes nearby, watching Ned and Yashvi as they laugh. They're becoming a bit flirtatious, and Yashvi challenges Ned to a game of pool. Ned accepts, and they head inside. Kane follows them in...
Kyle and Amy are still chatting. Kyle is assuming that David's condition is the reason for Amy not wanting a baby right now.
KYLE: Well, we wait until David's in the clear. But that doesn't mean we have to stop practising, though -
AMY: It's not about David!
KYLE: Okay, then what's it about? (...) Babe?
AMY: I think I'm trying to take the pressure off.
KYLE: So, we park the baby bus for a while. All good.
But Amy still looks worried.
We see Kane hurry past as Leo walks through the park, apparently trying to catch up with Paul who's wandering pensively a little distance ahead. Kyle appears and starts chatting to Leo; Leo's eager to go after Paul, but Kyle is insistent, explaining that Amy's said she doesn't want to start trying for a baby yet.
LEO: I understand you want to start a family, but if Amy says she's not ready -
KYLE: No, but she *is* ready. She just got spooked, that's all. And I reckon I know how to change her mind.
LEO: She sounded pretty clear when she spoke to me.
KYLE: Yeah, but I've got the game- changer. Amy loves being a mum, right? So, I just need to remind her of that. I'm gonna fly Jimmy over.
LEO: ... Contacting Jimmy is probably not the best idea right now.
Yashvi is thrashing Ned at pool.
NED: I'm sure you'll take the win graciously, as always.
YASHVI: Said the loser!
Dipi and Shane come in, to check if Yashvi's heard any more from the cops. She says she'll let them know when she does. Yashvi takes a sip of her drink, and suddenly her lip starts to bleed. Ned checks her beer glass - there's broken glass in the bottom of it! He alerts Sheila, but it's clear there's too much glass in there for it to have been an accident.
DIPI: It's not your fault, Sheila. I think we all know who did this.
YASHVI: It's okay, Mum, it's just a tiny cut.
But Dipi is in fussing mode. Shane takes Ned aside, reminding him that he was supposed to be looking out for Yashvi. Ned objects that he couldn't have known what would happen here.
SHANE: This is my fault - I should never have left it to you.
NED: Oh, come on, that's a bit harsh.
SHANE: Is it? Forget it - I'll sort it myself.
Shane leaves, and Ned looks worried.
Roxy and Harlow come in. Roxy is playing up how much she needs a biscuit after having her blood taken. At this moment, Terese comes in - and Roxy quietly asks Harlow not to say anything about Roxy undergoing the tests, as she doesn't want Terese and Paul to get their hopes up like they did with Leo. Terese comes to join them and asks if Paul's back yet, but he isn't.
Roxy gets a phone call, and Harlow wonders aloud if it's the hospital with her blood results, telling Terese that Roxy's passed the first two tests despite her request to keep it quiet. We see Roxy looking worried by the phone call. When she hangs up and returns to the kitchen, she says she's...
ROXY: Struck out like everyone else.
Terese is disappointed, but thanks her for getting tested anyway. But Roxy looks like she's holding something back...
Gary is doing some housework, when a worried- looking Shane turns up.
SHANE: I just don't know who else to talk to.
He explains that Yashvi's been threatened by people from Ned's illegal fighting racket, and that the cops don't seem to want to do anything about it. Shane says he's got Kane's number from Aaron and is going to go and meet him tonight, on the pretext of being interested in getting involved in the fight ring.
GARY: How far are you willing to go?
SHANE: I'll do what it takes.
GARY: Yeah, well, if it was Xanthe, I'd do exactly the same.
Later that night, Shane meets Kane as arranged.
SHANE: So, you're the big tough guy who targets young women, are you?
But at that moment, Yashvi and Ned rush up to them. Yashvi says she doesn't want to fight; she just wants Kane off her back.
KANE: You shut down my operation.
YASHVI: Yeah, to give Ned a way out. And the cops don't know you run the fight ring. You haven't been charged.
KANE: Yeah. But when I start up again, I can't have you playing detective.
YASHVI: So, you put broken glass in my drink. That's pretty extreme.
KANE: Works better than asking nicely.
Kane declares he's going to sort Shane out first, and save Yashvi for later. Shane steps towards him angrily, but Yashvi blocks his way and tells Kane they're done here.
YASHVI: I've recorded every incriminating thing you said, and I've called the cops. Lucky you're a chatterbox who gave them plenty of time to get here.
We hear sirens, and Kane is soon accosted by a policeman. Ned cheekily waves goodbye to Kane as he's apprehended.
Leo relays to Kyle what Liam has told him about Jimmy - namely, that he's going through a 'moody teenager phase'.
KYLE: Oh, it's all about the grunts!
LEO: Yeah! When David and I went through it, I'm pretty sure it was a year of him talking for me. But anyway - Liam says he's got it under control. So that's why I didn't say anything to Amy.
Kyle agrees with this approach, saying Amy's been really stressed over the camera scandal, and now David's injuries.
LEO: Liam doesn't want Amy to know, either. You know, I don't think he wants to look like a bad parent, so...
KYLE: Then, let him handle it. At least give him a chance to step up as a dad.
LEO: And then, if he calls, or anything changes...
KYLE: Then, mate, we tell Amy straight away. Absolutely.
Dipi is giving Shane, Ned and Yashvi a thorough dragoning for putting themselves in harm's way. Shane is the most contrite as Dipi tells him off for going after Kane in the first place, rejecting what she calls 'sexist rubbish' when he tries to claim it's different to Yashvi going after Kane! Yashvi, meanwhile, is a lot more proud of herself, saying she knew she could get Kane to confess.
YASHVI: I heard Dad say he was gonna go sort him out, so I read his texts with Kane, and then I showed up!
SHANE: ... I can't believe you went along with it, Ned!
NED: You asked me to look after her!
YASHVI (annoyed): He what?!
Dipi can't believe Yashvi is declaring herself some kind of hero, but Ned agrees that her plan to get Kane was 'pretty cool'.
DIPI: Okay, well, it's over now, so at least we can be glad for that!
Ned and Yashvi can't stop smiling at one another.
Leo comes in to find a distressed- looking Paul sitting on the couch; all the others are having dinner on the patio, but Paul admits he's not hungry. Leo sits down next to him.
LEO: Dad, are you okay? We're all worried about you - Terese, Harlow, even Roxy.
PAUL (emotional): I can't watch this happen. We can't lose David.
LEO: We won't!
Paul is bordering on tearful now.
PAUL: Yeah, but, see, that's just it - we could. We might, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it. I can't make him better. You know, I'm his father, and there's not a single thing I can do to help.
LEO: That's not true. You're there for him.
PAUL: Like I wasn't for you.
LEO: ... It's okay.
PAUL (tearful): Oh, Leo, Leo, I... I know what sort of man I am, what I'm capable of. But I'm a father too, and there's... and I would do anything, pay anyone for my children. The problem is, there's no- one to pay off; there's no- one to negotiate with.
Leo moves closer.
LEO: I understand what it feels like for things to be so outside your control. You know, it's hard to show up to that every day, to be so...
PAUL: Powerless, I know.
LEO: And I thought you were superhuman.
PAUL: Leo, I'm so scared.
Leo puts a hand on Paul's shoulder.
LEO: Me too. But we can't lose hope.
Paul touches Leo's hand.
PAUL: You know I would do exactly the same for you, don't you?
Leo nods. In the kitchen, Harlow and Roxy are watching sympathetically.
HARLOW: I can't believe they're running out of options.
ROXY: They'll come up with something. They'll find a donor, or someone in the family might come through.
This gives Harlow an idea...
HARLOW: Maybe there *is* someone...
The next day, Yashvi is still bragging about her plan to bring down Kane to Dipi and Shane. She claims she wasn't even nervous.
YASHVI: It was so cool to put all the pieces together and work it out. I think that's what I want to do. I want to be a cop.
SHANE: Uh, okay, Vee...
YASHVI: Please don't try and talk me out of it.
SHANE: I won't. If you've got the drive, and you really want to do it, then your mum and me will be behind you 110 percent.
DIPI: ... After Mishti, I guess we know what we're in for.
SHANE: Being a cop is one thing. It's Ned that worries me. You've got to promise that you won't start things up with him again.
SHANE: I mean it, trouble follows him. He might not want it to, but it does. And no matter how hard he tries to walk the line, he keeps putting you at risk. No guy is worth that, Vee.
YASHVI: ... Yeah.
But Yashvi looks despondent.
Meanwhile, Kyle and Amy are at a nearby table; Amy's still being noticeably cool towards Kyle. Leo turns up and joins them, but Amy can't get out of there quick enough; she asks Leo to come to the hospital with her to visit David, and rushes out with him.
Once they're gone, Kyle boots up his computer, and makes a FaceTime call request, to Jimmy...
Roxy is getting very irate over an email Harlow has sent to someone, asking to arrange a visit; the recipient hasn't replied, and it's been nine hours.
ROXY: This is a visitation request, not brain surgery! Did you tell them that it was urgent?
HARLOW: Yeah, of course I did - and can you keep your voice down? If Grandad finds out that I'm going to ask my dad to be a donor, he would lose the plot.
ROXY: Just click 'refresh'. Click it!
HARLOW: Oh, my - why are you so wired about this? It's not a Black Friday sale!
Roxy briefly runs out of retorts, and looks worried.
ROXY: ... I'm not wired. I'm gutted that I'm not a match for David.
At that moment, Harlow gets a call from her dad's prison, confirming that Robert has agreed to see her. Roxy looks relieved as she listens.
HARLOW: He's approved the visit, and he wants me to come today.
ROXY: Well, come on - let's go!
Roxy practically drags Harlow towards the door.
HARLOW: I can't believe I'm gonna go see my father.
ROXY: You can dwell on that on the way there - let's go!
But just as they're about to leave, Paul and Terese come downstairs.
PAUL: Where are you girls off to so early?
ROXY and HARLOW: ...
