- Mark tells Aaron to go to Japan with David, and have fun
- Shaun and Elly attend an art class together
- Mark starts trying to prove a link between Shaun and the fire at the police evidence depot
- Pierce Greyson is back in Erinsborough
- Aaron tells Chloe that Pierce is back for business, but Chloe has other theories
- Elly invites Shaun to accompany her to her twelve- week scan
- Yashvi lunges in for a kiss with Ned, but it's awkward afterwards; and Shaun sees it happen
- Shaun puts his foot in it by telling Bea about Ned and Yashvi's kiss
- Next, it's Bea and Finn's turn to have a Moment™…
Finn and Bea pull back from the brink, before anything untoward happens. Finn wants to talk about it, but Bea would rather forget it, claiming she's still ‘weirded out by the Ned and Yashvi thing'.
FINN: Yeah. Consider it forgotten.
But Finn looks very flustered and confused. Karl and Susan appear, and immediately sense the tension between Bea and Finn, who act all innocent.
SUSAN: Are we interrupting something?
BEA: No, we're just sketching.
FINN: Art therapy!
He shows the Kennedys his handiwork. But they don't look convinced, and exchange a glance.
Elly and Shaun are talking about the baby scan; Elly is explaining what's involved and what the scan will show. Shaun is clearly looking forward to it, and thanks Elly for inviting him. They get up to leave, but Mark comes in.
ELLY: Hey, Mark. We're on our way to an appointment, so –
MARK: None of my business. Though, I do need to speak to you about the fire at the forensics locker.
SHAUN: You already know I was in Sydney when that happened.
MARK: I'm just trying to cover every possibility.
SHANE: With respect, I have nothing else to tell you.
ELLY: Are there any other developments, anything we should know about?
MARK: No. But the truth does always find its way to the surface. Eventually.
SHAUN: I wasn't involved. And unless there's some new evidence, I don't know what the deal is.
MARK: The deal is, the case was never solved. And I want you to know that I'll be looking into this personally… Don't want to be late to your appointment?
Mark walks off, leaving Elly and Shaun looking concerned.
Kyle is at a table outside Harold's with Chloe. He's working on his tram tender, but Chloe is distracted and watching Pierce, who's across the courtyard, having a meeting with Terese. Kyle chastises her for not helping him with his pitch, as promised.
KYLE: Have you spoken to him yet?
CHLOE: I don't need to. It's obvious he wants me.
KYLE: Just tell him you're not interested.
CHLOE: Not until I know whether this deal is happening or not. I don't want to break his heart if he's just gonna leave town anyway.
Terese approaches, and Chloe asks her how discussions are going about the wine trial. Terese tells her she's just locked it in with Pierce, who has ‘high hopes' for the deal; he'll be working with them on it for the next few months. Chloe rolls her eyes as Terese leaves.
Ned turns up to see Yashvi. Before he can say much…
YASHVI: I'm totally fine. Why wouldn't I be?
NED: Things got a little bit intense this morning, and then you were out of there so fast –
YASHVI: Because I made a complete idiot of myself.
NED: No, you didn't, Vee, honestly. It's fine. It's just – I just think we should've talked.
YASHVI: Nothing to say. It was a mistake. You clearly weren't into it, and you just broke up with Bea.
NED: Yeah. Yeah, but since then, we've been hanging out heaps. And I know I've given you mixed messages before, okay? I didn't want to do that to you again. I just think we should cool it for a while.
YASHVI: Oh. What happened to me being so fun to hang out with?
NED: You are, alright? It's just till things are a little less confused.
YASHVI: Look, it's fine. You weren't into it – you're not into me like that. Let's just forget about it. Unless you secretly think you're irresistible.
NED: I don't, alright? I was just trying to make it easier for you.
YASHVI: No need. We're mates.
Ned slinks out, and Yashvi looks mortified…
Sheila pesters Kyle and Chloe for ‘the goss' – specifically, about Pierce's business dealings with Paul and Terese. Chloe tells her about the Lassiter's wine trial; but Kyle explains why Chloe really thinks Pierce is back in town.
CHLOE: He's trying to win me back!
SHEILA: The man is minted, and cuter than George Clooney – but I think he's been with a few since he saw you last, love. No offence.
CHLOE: Oh, none taken! But he had our whole lives planned out once. If I hadn't ended it, there would be a massive rock on this finger.
Sheila offers to do some investigating on Chloe's behalf, ‘on the DL, as Xanthe would say' – to find out what Pierce is thinking. Chloe says that would be great.
KYLE: Or it could be a disaster! You're not exactly subtle, Gran.
SHEILA: Kyle Eugene Canning, your gran is incredibly discreet when it comes to affairs of the heart.
Chloe giggles at Kyle's middle name, and asks Sheila how long she'll need to get the truth out of Pierce.
SHEILA: You will know in a jiffy, because ‘Sheilock' Canning is on the case!
Kyle shakes his head in disbelief.
In the garden, Susan talks to Finn about the ‘something' she and Karl walked in on earlier, between him and Bea. Finn says he was just trying to cheer Bea up, and that suddenly…
BEA (to Karl, indoors): We nearly kissed. And I can't get my head around it.
KARL: Okay. Did it mean something?
BEA: No. No, I would never have let that happen. It was just… just a Moment™.
SUSAN (to Finn, outdoors): Even if it was just a Moment™, that's a lot for you both to deal with.
FINN: It's confused everything.
BEA (to Karl, indoors): I don't know how I let it happen. After everything Finn has done – the old Finn, but still, it just brought home how messed up this whole situation is.
FINN (to Susan, outdoors): I mean, who was Bea looking at in that Moment™? Was it the me that I am now, or the old me – this Patrick that she used to love? Or maybe this is all just about Ned?
BEA (to Karl, indoors): I am jealous, knowing that Ned is with Yashvi.
KARL: Do you regret breaking up?
BEA: No… I dunno. I'm an idiot.
KARL: No, you're not. Your Feelings™ for someone don't just evaporate because you break up.
BEA: All I know is, there's just too much going on in my head to be worrying about Finn being around.
FINN (to Susan, outdoors): I just want to be friends. Good friends.
SUSAN: But that's all?
SUSAN: Because if you are developing Feelings™ for Bea, that could undo all the trust that you've built.
BEA (to Karl, indoors): I've only just got used to the idea of being around him.
KARL: You know, there's no harm in taking a step back. Putting a bit of space between yourselves, just while you figure things out.
SUSAN (to Finn, outdoors): You need to talk to her. Sort it out, before things get more uncomfortable for both of you.
Elly and Shaun are waiting for the scan appointment; Elly explains she has a new obstetrician after all the awkwardness with Dr Dietrich's son blackmailing her. Elly admits she's nervous, but Shaun is doing a good job of reassuring her.
SHAUN: It's been a tough few months for you, but… I think you're really brave. Picking yourself up after everything.
ELLY: Thank you.
SHAUN: And whenever you need me – as a friend – I'll be here.
The new obstetrician, Dr Hart, appears, and takes them through to the examination room. For the first time, Elly is unashamed to refer to Shaun as the baby's father…
Mark is sitting at his computer, working on the forensic fire case, when Aaron and David come in. They present Mark with a copy of their itinerary for the Japan holiday they're heading off on tomorrow, in case he needs to get in touch with them.
Mark explains that he's tracked down a guy who used to work with Finn's mum; he's hoping he can shed some more light on Shaun. Concerned, Aaron closes Mark's computer and tells him he needs to stop trying to dig up dirt on Shaun.
MARK: I am trying to put a criminal behind bars.
AARON: Mark, it's a personal vendetta! (…) And it's not the first time you've let your emotions mess with your work – Sonya's investigation when you thought she was innocent? And the same with Tyler's.
MARK: It was different.
AARON: Well, you still lost your job. Do you want to do that again?
MARK: Of course not. It's all I've got at the moment.
DAVID: It's not all you've got. You've got a lot more than that.
MARK: It certainly feels like it.
Mark lumbers off to his room. Aaron tells David he can't leave Mark like this; they'll have to cancel the Japan trip.
Outside the pub, Amy is helping Gary on his tram tender pitch. Sheila appears, and overhears them. She tells Gary not to be too disappointed if he doesn't win the tender.
Pierce is working at a table nearby. Sheila notices a jewellery box on the table, and helps herself to a peek inside. It's a ring.
SHEILA: Ooh, for someone special, I presume?
PIERCE: It's not a tip for the postie.
SHEILA: (…) And this is going to be a surprise for the recipient?
PIERCE: She may have a sneaking suspicion, but I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. I don't think she'll see it coming.
Sheila wishes him luck, then heads back inside.
Bea encounters Finn by the lake; she sighs and walks in the opposite direction. But she's accosted by Yashvi coming the other way, who says they need to talk. Finn walks away despondently.
YASHVI: Before you hear it from anyone else – I kissed Ned.
BEA: Yeah. I know.
YASHVI: I'm so sorry; it was so embarrassing. I would've told you earlier, but I had to die first.
BEA: What's embarrassing? Are you a bad kisser?
YASHVI: What? No! I mean, probably. No, I thought there was something happening between us, and that he was really into it. But he really wasn't.
Bea is surprised to learn that Yashvi and Ned aren't actually together. Yashvi says she doesn't want Bea to hate her or Ned, especially if Bea's still into him.
BEA: Well, I'm not. And I don't hate you, Yashvi. Things like this happen between friends. Sometimes, when you're close to a person, things can get confused. You might misjudge a look and do something you totally regret. I mean, Ned would be lucky to have you.
Yashvi doesn't look so sure.
Dr Hart is performing the scan on Elly, while she and Shaun watch on a computer screen.
DR HART: Meet your little bubba.
Elly gets emotional, and Shaun is pretty excited. The doctor says that the heartbeat is strong and all the measurements are fine. Elly wells up; her relief is palpable.
Karl is home alone, looking at a document, when Gary and Amy turn up. Karl quickly hides the document in a drawer, and we see that Gary has brought his tram tender document along. He asks Karl if he can provide any hints on the competition – but at that moment Kyle emerges, presumably from the bathroom. The document Karl had hidden was Kyle's own tram pitch!
KYLE: So, Doc, be honest – am I gonna win it?
He sees Gary and Amy, and it's all pretty awkward as Kyle and Gary realise they are competitors for the tender…
David and Aaron are discussing rearranging their Japan holiday for another date, resigned to postponing because of Mark's state of mind. But at that moment, Mark approaches, and apologises for his behaviour before.
MARK: You were right about what you said about me and work.
DAVID: Well, that's why we have to stay close, to help take care of you.
MARK: No, no, no – there's no need. I thought about what you said, and I'm ditching the forensic fire case (…) I'm gonna see a psychologist instead. Sort my head out (…) Seeing Elly today was a real gut punch. I've lost everything, and – for her, it's like nothing's happened. The most frustrating part about this is… I think I still love her. But anyway, I've got a plan, and I'm gonna get through this. Which means you guys can go on your trip.
They both vocally object, but Mark insists.
MARK: Do you want me to pull out my badge? This trip is important to you guys, okay? You are going. End of story.
Aaron hugs Mark gratefully.
AARON: Thanks, bro. I love ya.
Later that evening, Shaun is round for dinner with Elly and the Kennedys, while Bea and Finn do the cooking, awkwardly.
FINN: Are we okay? It's just… when I saw you earlier, it seemed like you were avoiding me.
BEA: (…) To be honest, I needed to get my head around what actually happened between us.
BEA: Well, that Moment™ really meant nothing. I was just confused.
FINN: … Yeah.
BEA: Hey, Finn, I really think we need some space between us. We live in the same house, and I just don't want things to get messy.
FINN: … My thoughts exactly.
But Finn looks sad. At the table, Karl and Susan are looking at the ultrasound photo. Karl is about to attempt to determine the baby's gender, but Elly stops him. She says it won't affect her plans either way – all the toys she's buying are unisex.
KARL: You know, I was giving some thought to the child's musical development.
SUSAN: Oh, no, no, no!
KARL: If you're thinking of playing some music in utero, I've got some of my own songs I could suggest.
ELLY: Yeah, it's a little bit too early to train up another band member.
KARL: Absolutely not! I showed enormous musical prowess when I was young.
Susan tells Karl he should go and spend some time with his half- sister Jemima.
SUSAN: Play music with her, don't torture poor Elly.
Karl admits that Jemima's in London and has asked him to join her; he could introduce her to their UK relatives. While everyone else prepares the table for dinner, Elly excitedly shows Finn her ultrasound.
ELLY: Thank you for encouraging me to spend time with Shaun. It's been nice.
FINN: That's awesome. He's gonna be a great dad.
Kyle is whingeing to Sheila about Gary competing with him for the tram tender. Sheila makes out like she didn't know! Chloe rushes in.
CHLOE: Get this, girlfriends – Leo told me Pierce has hired out the Back Lane Bar, exactly like the last time he tried to woo me.
SHEILA: And guess who I spotted earlier with a very expensive, extremely special engagement ring!
CHLOE: You don't think…?
SHEILA: He said as much!
Kyle objects strenuously, saying they're jumping to conclusions – it could be a total misunderstanding. But Chloe and Sheila are both convinced he's about to propose to Chloe.
CHLOE: Besides, who else would he be running around booking out whole bars and buying diamonds for?
KYLE: Could be anyone! I saw Vera Punt strutting around outside earlier, looking suspiciously happy.
But Chloe is unpersuaded by this hypothesis.
CHLOE: I need to fix this.
Terese is reading a magazine when Ned comes in, and remarks on how quiet the house is. They discuss Roxy and Vance; Terese remarks that she's worried about how Roxy will react when Vance leaves as per Terese's ultimatum.
NED: She'll probably be a complete mess, blame everyone else for her tragic loss, and then make some terrible decisions involving alcohol (…) Love's brutal.
Yashvi comes in to talk to Ned, and Terese leaves them to it. Yashvi gets straight to the point.
YASHVI: Look, why don't you want to go out with me?
NED: Uhh… what happened to us being mates?
YASHVI: I know it's because last time you were interested in Bea, but you guys aren't together anymore. There's nothing stopping you from being with anyone else, right?
NED: Yeah, but –
YASHVI: I'm eighteen now, and I know we're just friends. But that doesn't mean that can't change. We both like footy, we get on – we had that Moment™ earlier. Don't say I'm insane, because there was something there. We get each other – is it such a crazy idea?
NED: No, it's not, Vee – I just –
YASHVI: Then why aren't I good enough for you?
NED: This isn't about you not being good enough, but – You're awesome, Vee. I just – you're –
NED: I'm not ready to be with someone else. It's too soon. You can understand that, yeah?
But she doesn't look very understanding, and walks out.
Back Lane Bar
Pierce is sitting at a table – surrounded by roses, champagne and the ring – when Chloe turns up.
CHLOE: Wow. That is a huge rock.
PIERCE: What are you doing here?
Chloe sits down.
CHLOE: I've come to set a few things straight.
PIERCE: This is not great timing.
CHLOE: I'm sorry, but it has to be this way. I wish I'd bitten the bullet and come to you earlier, but… here we are. I know why you're back. I know what you're planning.
PIERCE: Listen, this –
CHLOE: No, you really need to hear me out. You are such an amazing, kind, thoughtful man. And I'm so flattered that you've come back for me. But I can't do this. I can't marry you.
CHLOE: I'm really, really sorry. This has to be goodbye.
To underline her point, Chloe gives Pierce a goodbye kiss on the lips. At which point, an unknown woman walks in, and gasps at the sight before her.
UNKNOWN WOMAN: What the hell's going on?!
PIERCE: Ebony! This is Chloe – Chloe, this is Ebony. My fiancée.
