Wedding Venue
Amy chats to Aaron as the guests gather outside, telling him he's done a great job as best man. But guilt-ridden Aaron isn't so sure. Everyone soon notices, though, that things aren't right between Elly and Mark. When Karl goes over to let them know the photographer is waiting, Elly bursts into a fresh round of tears and runs away leaving the guests stunned and Chloe unable to meet Mark's eye.
Erinsborough Hospital
Gary finds Sheila lurking around after her lunch with Clive, spying on Finn. Sheila says Clive filled her in on everything - after four months in a hospital bed Finn's going to have to re-learn how to walk, but Gary snarks Finn better learn how to run instead. He believes Finn's memory loss is a load of bull.
SHEILA: Finn's coma is the result of a brain injury, and according to Clive that means the amnesia may be genuine.
GARY: He should be thrown in the slammer, end of story.
Finn sees them through the window and gives them a cheery but confused wave, earning the title of "smug person of dubious parentage" from Gary.
GARY: He needs to pay for what he did to Xanthe.
SHEILA: Clive says this type of amnesia has no guarantees. He may never get his memory back.
GARY: You mean he could keep this up forever? (Sheila nods) What about his charges?
The thought of Finn never getting his comeuppance leaves Gary gobsmacked.
Ramsay Street
Standing out the front of #24, Fay, Amy and David are left clueless as to what happened between the newlyweds as Karl and Susan also arrive home. The Kennedys inform the others that Bea found Elly and brought her home but she hasn't said anything yet about why she took off. David then tells the Ks that Aaron and Chloe are out looking for Mark.
AMY: Maybe Mark's looking for her?
DAVID: Or he's avoiding her. Mark must have done something pretty horrible. Why else would Elly run away from her own wedding?
But the group falls quiet when they see Mark walking up Ramsay Street, looking miserable. He heads towards his house without speaking to anyone.
Aaron's Car
Aaron feels terrible that he didn't say anything to Mark before he went through with the ceremony. Chloe agrees that it shouldn't have gone ahead, but Aaron scoffs, wondering whose benefit that would be for. Chloe replies that this whole situation is hard for her too. She gets a message from Fay letting them know Mark's home, but Aaron becomes angry when he realises Chloe's trying to repeatedly call Elly.
AARON: You are unbelievable! You're still hoping aren't you? You still think something's going to happen between you two, don't you? Chlo, I can't believe where your head's at! What about our own brother?
CHLOE: She needs to know I'm here for her.
AARON: No, Mark should be your priority right now. Not Elly.
Chloe can't help rolling her eyes, obviously not agreeing with Aaron's sentiment.
Number 28
Bea, Susan and Karl try to comfort Elly as she cries on the couch in her wedding dress. Susan gently asks her what's going on, and Bea adds that whatever Mark's done she can tell them. Elly tearfully says that they've got it all wrong: "Mark didn't do anything. I did." Susan raises her eyebrows and Karl shares a bewildered look with Bea.
Ramsay Street
Gary and Sheila have caught up with Amy, who wants to go over and check on Elly to find out what's wrong. But Sheila says it's obvious that Elly got tired playing second fiddle to Kate's ghost. Aaron and Chloe arrive home, which sends a furious-looking Mark storming out of #24 with Fay and David close behind. Aaron reminds Chloe she has to face Mark sooner or later, but Chloe wishes it were later. Trying to abate Mark's fury, Aaron steps in to calm him, but Mark pushes forward and starts yelling at Chloe.
MARK: I gave you a place to stay! I've been nothing but supportive helping you with your diagnosis, and this is how you repay me? By sleeping with my wife?!
The news stuns David and Fay. Aaron tries to comfort his mum who's getting upset.
MARK: You are the most selfish person I've ever met!
CHLOE: I never meant to hurt you, it just happened.
MARK: Nothing ever just happens with you, Chloe! As usual, you took what you wanted. What else do you need? Do you want my house? Do you want my car? Do you want the shirt off my back?
Chloe starts to cry but this just enrages Mark further.
MARK: (scathing) No, you don't get to cry now, Chloe! You don't get to cry now.
CHLOE: I'm sorry!
MARK: You are the most pathetic excuse for a sister. And I regret every second I've ever spent caring about you!
Done with everything, Mark goes back inside leaving his family reeling and Amy, Gary and Sheila looking on, speechless. Aaron puts an arm around Chloe but is clearly feeling terrible about Mark.
Number 28
Karl returns, letting Elly, Bea and Susan know that the Ramsay Street showdown has subsided. Bea says she knew her sister and Chloe were close but she didn't realise Elly was attracted to Chloe.
SUSAN: How long have you had feelings for Chloe?
ELLY: I don't. Not like that. It's really hard to explain.
BEA: Well, you were in a bad place... Did she take advantage of you?
ELLY: No! No, Chloe is not like that.
Susan encourages Elly to go and have a rest, as she looks exhausted.
Number 24
Aaron and David listen in as Mark tries to make sense of what happened. He paces around, admitting that he's made his own mistakes and feels guilty about the way he treated Elly, but doesn't understand how he could have been so stupid. David says Mark shouldn't beat himself up about it.
MARK: There must have been warning signs but I was just too much in my own head to see them. You know what makes it worse? They let me go through with the ceremony. Why would they do that? Why would they try and keep it from me?
DAVID: My guess is they wanted to move on from it.
MARK: Yeah but they let me stand there and say my vows.
AARON: (ruefully) Yeah... you should have been told.
Aaron's demeanour sets off alarm bells in Mark, and also in David. Mark asks if Aaron knew about Elly and Chloe and Aaron's lack of response speaks volumes.
DAVID: Why didn't you say anything?
AARON: I don't know, for a minute there I thought that keeping quiet was the right thing to do. I'm sorry.
MARK: Was this an ongoing thing?
AARON: I don't think so. I don't know, Mark, you'll have to speak to Elly and Chloe.
MARK: So you're still going to keep their secrets?
AARON: They're the ones with the answers! I was just caught up in the middle!
MARK: You let me stand at the altar and marry a woman that cheated on me. You're my brother! You were meant to be my best man.
Mark's left incredulous while Aaron feels awful.
The Waterhole
Amy tells Gary and Sheila she still hasn't spoken to Elly, but now she knows what's gone on she thinks Elly might have gone into hiding.
SHEILA: That girl has got a screw loose running around behind Mark's back like that. I mean it took her forever and a day to snag him!
GARY: Yeah, god, the poor bloke. I know how it feels to have your wedding ruined like that.
SHEILA: Well thankfully yours blew up before the 'I dos'.
Bea walks in and they ask how Elly's going. Bea replies that Elly's staying in her room so she's come to the pub to pick up some food for her sister. Sheila forges ahead with her usual tact and grace to ask Bea for information.
SHEILA: So, what's the story? Is she Team Ellen, bi or has she just gone completely fluid?
GARY: Mum!
BEA: I just want a Parma takeaway please.
Sheila heads out the back and Amy apologises on her behalf. Talk soon turns to Finn with Gary asking if Bea's seen him yet. Bea says that she has no urge to, but Susan's been and he's apparently very convincing. And while Gary's surprised to learn Susan has also had retrograde amnesia, he's not buying Finn's diagnosis for a second. Gary reckons if he had "five minutes alone with that mongrel" he'd see straight through him. This gives Bea some pause - maybe there's merit in visiting Finn after all.
Erinsborough Hospital
Nurse Kriptic tells Bea that Finn's aware it's now 2019 but that it's best to avoid talking about events from the past 12 years: "He's still psychologically fragile so we don't want to cause him any shocks." Bea thanks her and says she's already cleared her visit with the guard.
Finn's curious to see he has a visitor when Bea signs in with the police guard. He chirpily greets her and apologises for not recognising her, holding out his hand for her to shake. Bea gets overwhelmed and nearly bolts, but Finn begs her to stay.
FINN: I know I'm not great company. I don't know who you are and I can't talk movies, sport, politics or celebrity break-ups unless they're pre-2007. (He smiles) Miranda and Orlando still a thing?
Bea doesn't react to his joke so Finn says it'd just be really good to talk to someone who wasn't part of the hospital staff. Taking a deep breath, Bea steps closer to his bed.
FINN: So... how well do we know each other?
BEA: Well enough.
FINN: Do you know my brother Shaun? They tell me he's gonna come visit soon, which is great. Unless mum finds out. She doesn't like it when we get together.
Finn's cheerful and casual manner is incredibly unsettling to Bea.
The Waterhole
Sheila takes Fay and Chloe's empty wine glasses after they decline a refill and throws a judgey look Chloe's way on her departure. Chloe tells her mum that she hates what she's done to Mark, but there's also a part of her that thinks maybe everything happened for a reason. Sheila spies in the background as Fay tries to make sense of Chloe's train of thought.
FAY: And what reason would that be?
CHLOE: That Elly and I belong together.
FAY: What about Mark? He's married to her.
CHLOE: And it was a mistake. Anyone can see that.
FAY: So you don't regret sleeping with Elly?
CHLOE: Why would I? Mum, I love her.
Fay's hand starts to shake and she attempts to control it. Chloe remains oblivious.
CHLOE: If I could only speak to her I could find out if she's feeling the same way, but she won't answer my texts or calls. Do you think I should go to her house?
Angered, Fay slaps Chloe across the cheek, earning a dramatic gasp from Sheila. Chloe clutches her face, astonished by her mum's reaction. But Fay's furious.
FAY: You spoilt brat! You have destroyed your brother's happiness and Elly is all you can think about? I can't believe after everything Mark said you still only care about yourself. I am absolutely disgusted with you.
Fay walks out leaving Chloe ashamed and humiliated.
Erinsborough Hospital
Finn notices Bea's hair and make-up looks quite fancy for a hospital visit, telling her she looks "really pretty". Bea admits it was her sister's wedding that day, frowning when Finn responds with a genuine-sounding, "Nice!" He does wonder, though, why Bea's visiting him when she should be off celebrating the nuptial. Finn figures this means he and Bea must be close and asks what more Bea can tell him about their friendship. But Bea's had enough and runs out, telling Finn it was a mistake to come.
Number 24
Aaron apologises to David for disappointing him, especially since in their wedding vows David promised to keep his secrets and Aaron should have trusted him more. David surprises Aaron by saying he's not disappointed in him.
DAVID: I'm sad. I'm sad for Mark, I'm sad for Elly and Chloe. And I'm sad for you. You were put in an unbelievably hard position. This secret was an absolute nightmare to keep, but it wasn't yours to tell. I wish I could have helped you carry the burden.
Aaron smiles gratefully at his husband as they share a hug. He says David should save his sympathy for Mark as he's the one that needs it the most. Speaking of Mark, he walks out from his room and through the front door ignoring Aaron's question about where he's going. He's a man on a mission.
Number 28/The Waterhole/Number 24
Elly opens the door to Mark who says he wants answers, "you owe me that." Mark brushes past her into the lounge room.
MARK: How many times were you with each other? Was this an ongoing thing?
ELLY: It was just once, the other day when you cancelled the wedding.
MARK: So it was out of revenge?
ELLY: It wasn't like that.
MARK: Please, Elly, just help me understand!
ELLY: ... Just before we got engaged, Chloe kissed me. (Off Mark's disbelief) And, no, it was one-sided! It meant nothing to me.
MARK: Why didn't you tell me about it then?
ELLY: We were embarrassed. I didn't want to ruin your relationship with Chloe.
MARK: You proposed to me! Was that out of guilt?
ELLY: No! I proposed to you because I love you! Everything I said to you when we were waiting for your test results is true. I want to spend the rest of my life with you, no matter what. The things that happened with Chloe, it was because I needed comfort when you called off the wedding.
Mark is trying to understand what Elly's saying.
MARK: So you're bisexual?
ELLY: No!
MARK: You slept with a woman.
ELLY: You abandoned me. And yeah, I guess I was attracted to who she represents: someone who loves me unconditionally.
This hits Mark like a ton of emotional bricks.
MARK: Are you saying that Chloe's in love with you?
ELLY: (nods)
MARK: I can't deal with this.
ELLY: Mark...
But Mark walks out. Elly leans back against the door and slides down it until she's sitting on the floor, crying.
Mark arrives home looking broken and David encourages Aaron to reach out to him. Aaron goes over and envelops Mark in a hug, with Mark eventually reciprocating.
Sitting by herself at the table, Chloe dithers on whether or not to call Elly. Reaching a decision, she stands up and leaves the pub.
Harold's Café
Susan and Karl tell Bea that Toadie's taken the kids to Colac for a few days before they head off to LA for a while. Susan notices that Bea looks stressed and thinks it's to do with Elly, but Bea confesses she saw Finn earlier. Karl doesn't understand why she put herself through it, but Bea wanted to see if she could unmask the truth. Karl takes a phone call while Bea talks it through more with Susan.
SUSAN: So what did you think after you saw him?
BEA: I'm just more confused than ever. Finn was really nice. I don't know, it just seems like it's Patrick all over again but a weird, goofy version.
SUSAN: I don't think you should visit him anymore; it's just going to make you stressed.
BEA: Yeah I guess.
SUSAN: Why don't we both try and put him out of our minds.
Easier said than done as Karl returns from his phone call from the hospital - apparently Finn has requested to see Susan.
Number 28
Chloe's decided to visit Elly since she won't answer her calls, but Elly doesn't look too happy to see her there. Chloe asks why Elly told Mark they slept together.
CHLOE: (cautious) Have you finally realised that being with him is a mistake?
ELLY: I told him because the only thing I could hear in my head was you telling me I can't start my marriage with a lie.
CHLOE: It was more than that. You did it for us, you know what we have is real.
ELLY: Chloe, stop.
CHLOE: You can't keep denying it. Just give us a chance, please. I promise you it'll be worth it.
Chloe smiles at Elly, thinking she's on the same wavelength. But Elly steps back from her, shaking her head.
ELLY: I'm sorry, what happened between us was a mistake. I don't have those kinds of feelings for you.
CHLOE: Because you're not allowing yourself to!
ELLY: I love Mark! I don't love you, Chloe!
CHLOE: You don't mean that.
ELLY: Yes, yes I do. We will never, ever be together.
Chloe looks crestfallen as Elly tells her to leave.
Erinsborough Hospital
The next morning Susan arrives to visit Finn but Karl's sure Finn's up to no good. Susan acknowledges this and says in that case, isn't it better to let Finn believe he's in control? That way he'll become complacent and eventually slip up. Karl wants to go in Finn's room with Susan, but Susan asks him to let her do it alone. She signs in with the police guard and enters the room.
Finn's immensely glad Susan came to see him, but Susan wants to know why he put the request in. Finn figures that since they used to work together, and that Susan's the only one who has visited him, they must have been good friends.
FINN: I reckon that makes you a good person and I'm hoping you'll be straight with me.
SUSAN: About what?
FINN: About what's really going on. There is a guard outside my door all the time. At first I thought he was hospital security, but then I realised my room is the only one getting special treatment. Where's my dad? Or my friends from uni? Why haven't they visited? There was this weird girl who came to see me last night but she just seemed scared the whole time. And there are people constantly watching me from this window here. I feel like I'm an animal in a zoo!
SUSAN: I think you need to speak to the doctors.
FINN: I have amnesia, I'm not stupid, Susan. What am I not being told? Please, please just tell me the truth.
Karl continues to listen from outside as Susan battles with how to respond.
