- Pierce wanting to hire Chloe after finding out about her side- line company.
- Piper sneaking off to meet Cassius.
- Mark piecing together that Cassius was in town the night Hamish was killed.
- Ned and Bea wanting to track the new owner of Cassius' car down.
- Terese taking a chance on Ned getting hold of Cassius' old car.
- Bea and Ned commence the hunt for Cassius!
With Bea and Ned's help on the phone, Terese, Leo and Mark try to piece together all the information they know about Cassius and how it links into Hamish's death. Terese vetoes calling the police as she is unsure what Cassius has said to Piper and is scared that they will run. Piper can't be contact either, as her phone is turned off and although she took off with Tyler before, at least they knew him unlike Cassius. They agree on a plan – get Piper away from Cassius then call the police.
After hanging up, to let Ned and Bea look at more addresses, Terese wonders if the plan will work. Mark can't find out any info either via the police as nobody is talking to him.
TERESE: What will we do?
MARK: We wait.
Chloe tells Pierce that she can't go out with him as she promised Terese there would be no cross- over. He doesn't look too happy and walks away promising to weigh things up. “It's been enlightening Miss Brennan,” he remarks before heading off.
Elly trades places with him and wants to know all about Pierce! Chloe quickly explains who he is adding that she “just imploded.”
Its good news for Mishti – her suspension has been lifted although she turns down Shane's offer for some free samples for the station, as she wants to keep a low profile. “Have you heard from Pavan?” Shane asks and while she has messaged him, she has not actually talked to him but adds that he does not know her suspension is lifted, as she wanted to tell him personally to try to clear the air with his mum.
Leo comes in for a coffee and spots Mishti dressed for work. She has her first duty already planned – searching for Cassius and on hearing that, Leo sits down as he's something to tell her.
Cassius looks happy to see Piper in the room when he returns to the motel. “I don't know what to believe,” she admits to him after hearing various conflicting stories from everyone – so she wants answers from him. First is did he save her when she was in the bush (yes), then why did he not take her to hospital rather than calling the paramedics and not sticking around. “I wanted to do the right thing,” is his reply as to why he didn't tell her the truth. “What does that even mean?” she asks and then points out he lied over how long he'd been in Erinsborough.
CASSIUS: I didn't lie, I just didn't tell you the whole truth.
“This just doesn't make any sense,” she tells him, struggling to comprehend all that he's told her. She is annoyed too not to have met his mother, after hearing she was in town. He promises to tell her everything if she leaves with him (he's now going to rent a car rather than flying to Sydney). She's refusing to leave until he tells her – she promises him that whatever it is, they can work through it together.
PIPER: Nothing you say will make me stop loving you.
CASSIUS: I killed Hamish Roche.
Commercial break later and Piper is still struggling to understand the bombshell Cassius delivered!
CASSIUS: It wasn't Tyler.
Eventually she manages to croak out a “how” and “why” to him before asking how he even know Hamish.
CASSIUS: He and my mother were on and off again for years. She loved him, but he treated her terribly. He's the reason she has mental health issues. We hadn't seen him for ages and then he just showed up again last year. He turned on the charm and my mum fell for it again. He gave her some sob story about a tax bill, being broke and she gave him everything that she had and then he left her. She lost it and I stayed with her until she was stable, but I couldn't let him get away with this again, so I decided I was going to confront Hamish over what he did to her. I knew that he would try something dodgy again.
PIPER: What Hamish did to your mum was awful, but how could you?
CASSIUS: It wasn't just what Hamish did to my mum, I was there for every broken promise, every disappointment. It's what he did to me too. Hamish was my father.
PIPER: So, Tyler's your brother?
After filling her in fully, Elly thinks that Pierce will get why Chloe turned his offer down. The lass is curious to know though why he'd pay for her company.
Leo runs into Terese and gives her the news Mishti told him – Cassius was found at the airport trying to change his flight, his passport tipped off a silent alarm, but he ran off before he could be apprehended. Terese heads off to let Bea and Ned know and the reassurance that without his passport, Cassius can't get far.
“Poor Terese,” Amy remarks (she arrived seconds before Leo told her the news after being told what was happening from Paul) and praises her brother for being really supportive of Terese. “Yes, I'm just trying to help out," he nonchalantly replies.
Wherever the pair have been to, there is still no sign of Cassius, so it is onto the airport next. Bea is beginning to panic – what happened with her and Finn is coming back to her and he reassures her that “Cassius is not Finn.” Bea is struggling to breathe with the panic attack and Ned encourages her to take deep breaths.
Cassius is trying to tell Piper about how Hamish made him feel but she wants answers to questions beginning with did he know Tyler was his brother. He worked it out when he arrived in Erinsborough – we then have a flashback to Cassius watching from afar as Tyler talked to Hamish outside Harold's. “I was just waiting for Hamish to dump him and he never did,” Cassius explains adding that “Hamish was everything to Tyler that he wasn't to me.”
CASSIUS: I was jealous. All I ever wanted was my dad.
PIPER: He manipulated and used Ty.
CASSIUS: I worked that out in the end.
Piper wants to know what happened that night and Cassius begins by explaining that he took a waiter's job at the gala because he'd an inkling Hamish would be there. Cue flashback to Hamish taking the bottle of champers from the waiter, not realising that it was actually Cassius his son.
CASSIUS: Hamish had no idea who I was, but he still made me feel worthless. I knew he would never be the father that I wanted but I needed to stop feeling like he had control over our lives. So I followed him to Ramsay Street.
We got to a flashback and see Cassius outside #26 with the medallion he's been desperately looking for with the engraving ‘Cassius Grady Roche, 18.10.96' inscribed on it. Cassius knocks on the door, thinking that Hamish would answer, but he heard Sheila on the phone, so he went around the side and saw Hamish there. Apparently, he stood waiting to pluck up the courage to say something to Hamish, but Tyler turned up.
CASSIUS: All this time I was jealous of my brother. Thought he had everything I never did. Turns out he was screwed over by Hamish just as much as I was. When Tyler hit him, all I could think of was I feel cheated.
From the flashback, we saw Tyler hit Hamish before walking off and seconds later, Cassius appears. He gets Hamish's attention by saying ‘hey dad.'
We see Hamish shocked to see Cassius and in turn Cassius telling Hamish that he's dreamt for years of hitting him like Tyler did! Instead of telling Hamish why he's there, Cassius informs him that both he and his mum have given up trying to make him pay for what he's done to them both.
CASSIUS: But I haven't. I decided a long time ago that I don't have a dad.
HAMISH: Oh Cass.
CASSIUS: How dare you touch me, you're dead to me. DEAD!
Seconds later, he grabs Hamish by the neck and forces his head into the water before the flashback ends.
CASSIUS: I wish I could take it all back.
Chloe interrupts a pash session between Leo and Terese to see if there is any news from Piper (no) but is sure she will call soon enough. She then tells them she has a side- line paid date at lunchtime but promises to keep well away from Lassiters. Subtly she asks if there has been any feedback from Pierce, there has and it's all good, so they thank Chloe for impressing him.
“Just relax and breathe,” Ned reassures Bea with as she continues to recover from the panic attack she took. “I should never have let it get this bad,” she admits but he understands it bringing up bad memories. It has obviously shaken Bea, as she plans to seek therapy to help her. Getting back to why they are there, she plans to get an Uber home, so he can hunt for Piper, but he refuses to carry on alone.
NED: We will find Piper, we will get there, and she will be fine.
Cassius wishes he'd turned himself in right from the start – then everyone wouldn't have gone through hell. “Why didn't you?” she asks, and his explanation is who would have looked after his mum if he was inside? Piper wants to know how he manged to get out of the street unseen and he explains about jumping over the fences into the backyards until it he was clear and out of the street.
Cassius continues by saying he knew Hamish planed on fleeing by boat, so planned on following suit but when he got to the marina, the boat was gone. He guessed that Louise had taken it and Piper adds in that she was on board – cue flashback to Piper waking up onboard the boat and realising she was at sea. Cassius explains that he followed the boat around the coast, camping out waiting for a sign – then he ran into her (we see an unconscious Piper lying on the ground).
Piper is having trouble fitting all the pieces together, thinking back to what happened at the campsite. Cassius then had a brainwave over how he could make things up (saving her), which does down like a lead balloon with Piper! “Not completely,” he acknowledges although had decided against leaving.
CASSIUS: I hated myself for what I did. All I wanted to do was to try and fix it. That's why I rescued Gabe.
CASSIUS: I'm not a bad person Piper.
PIPER: If you're a good person, then you wouldn't have let Tyler go to jail for something that he didn't do.
CASSIUS: I was following that trial, I didn't think that he would be found guilty.
PIPER: (angrily) You could have come forward. And what about us? I mean was that a lie too?
He quickly says “no” and then admits he tried hard to stay away from her, but “something kept throwing us together.”
CASSIUS: I didn't want to fall for you, but I did. And the closer I got, the more guilty I felt but I couldn't stop loving you.
PIPER: You should have told me.
“I tried to help,” he says and he's trying to explain why he took Tyler's file from Toadie's office but is told if he wants to help, he should confess.
CASSIUS: I did. I sent my letter to the police, they should have it by today. Tyler will be set free, but I can't go to jail, I can't do that to my mum. That's why I've got to leave Piper. I am so sorry, I'm sorry for hurting you, I'm sorry for hurting everyone. Piper please forgive me.
Angrily, Piper pushes his hand away from her, ordering him not to touch her. She asks for a minute because its all too much for her (she's really struggling to take in all he's told her). After a few moments, Cassius leaves the room.
Back Lane Bar
Chloe is surprised to walk into the bar and find it deserted before her date makes himself known – Pierce! Turns out he has hired out the whole bar, so it's just the pair of them. She reminds him that she can't be with him due to a conflict of interest, but he thinks it's okay as long as nobody finds out – he doesn't plan to spill and doesn't think she will either.
Music montage time
With the aptly named ‘The moment I'm missing' playing, we go through Terese pacing in her office before sitting at her desk and looking at a picture of Piper before (later) Paul brings in a cuppa for her; Ned trying to help Bea and Mark pacing at his house too before looking at a picture of him with his brothers.
Cassius returns to gather his stuff, so he can evade the authorities – since his passport was flagged at the airport, he thinks they will already be out searching for him.
CASSIUS: I don't expect you to come with me, but I need to know something before I leave. Do you still love me?
Rather than reply to the question, Piper replies instead that she wants to go with him. Cassius can't believe it and double checks she is ready to give her life and family up. She seems reassured that the letter he sent will ensure Tyler gets out but wants them to come up with a plan before they leave. “I have it sorted,” he says trying to get her out of the room, but she pulls him back and asks that he trusts her, just as we hear the police pull up at the motel.
“I had to,” Piper says as Cassius tries to make a dash for the door but it's too late, from the knock you can tell who is at the door!
PIPER: You helped heal my heart Cass but you're the reason that it broke in the first place.
