Ned has been filling Terese in on the fact that Elissa is Cassius's mum and also knew Hamish. The police are now looking for Cassius, Ned says. Terese is annoyed that Ned didn't wake her and Piper to tell them this last night; now she has to rush to work to meet a Lassiter's VIP. But Terese wants to be there when Piper finds out about Cassius, so tells Ned to call her when Piper wakes up.
TERESE: Do you think there's any chance that there's an innocent explanation to all this?
TERESE: No – neither do I.
Chloe is trying to gauge Mark's opinion on a dress she's wearing to work, but he seems distracted by other things. She explains that they have a bigwig tycoon coming to the hotel today, hence the extra effort. Mark grumpily tells her she looks fine.
CHLOE: You're not yourself. So, come on – spill.
MARK: Something's come up.
MARK: And it might have a bearing on something else…
CHLOE: (…) Well, based on that generous sharing of information, all I can say is – I hope it all works out!
Chloe rushes off to work, leaving Mark looking pensive. He turns and looks at a framed photo of him with Tyler and Aaron on a nearby shelf.
Paul is micromanaging things at the hotel in preparation for Pierce Greyson, the bigwig tycoon's, arrival. We learn he is the owner of several wineries, a resort etc, and is thinking of using Lassiter's to host major events – hence Paul's panic to impress him. Terese bluntly asks Paul to stop telling her how to suck eggs; she's more than capable of looking after their guest.
Ned is wandering around in a towel when Bea turns up at the door, to find out how Piper took the news about Elissa being Cassius's mum. Ned tells her that Piper's not up yet; Bea offers to stick around for when Ned gives Piper the news, but Ned says it's not necessary as Terese will be coming home for that.
Paul can see that Terese is worried about something. She denies it, but Paul says they've known each other too long for any false bravado.
Ned offers to make Bea a coffee, but she says she'll do it, while he goes and gets dressed!
NED: Sorry if my appearance offends – you did come over unannounced!
BEA: Offend? Please, I've seen it all before.
Ned then finds a note from Piper taped to the fridge, and shouts upstairs for her – but there's no reply.
Lassiter's / No 22
Terese tells Paul there's something going on with Piper, but that she doesn't want him to worry about it.
PAUL: Of course I'm going to worry, if it concerns you this much!
TERESE: This is a really important day.
PAUL: But family comes first – always.
Terese gets a phone call from Ned, telling her that Piper has gone – and left a note saying she's gone to meet Cassius.
Shortly afterwards, Terese leaves Piper a voicemail asking her to call her back. She's filled Paul in on the situation with Cassius. Paul encourages Terese not to jump to the worst conclusions; Piper may just be hearing Cassius's side of the story.
TERESE: What if he's done something to her?
PAUL: We don't know that!
TERESE: Yeah, well, we don't know he hasn't.
She tries Piper's phone again, but Paul tells her to stop – this isn't helping anyone.
PAUL: Why can't you just trust that Piper is like her mother? Strong, independent, and completely capable of handling herself.
TERESE: Yeah, and capable of making stupid decisions.
PAUL: Oh, come on – have some faith.
TERESE: Paul! If this was Amy, you'd be commandeering the entire hotel staff to act as a search party. And you'd be hiring mercenaries!
PAUL: Yes. And I would hope that I would have a friend good enough to tell me this – stop concentrating on the worst- case scenarios and think about what we can do. Which is go to the police, alright?
Leo and Chloe come in; Paul has his hands on Terese's arms, reassuring her, and Leo looks concerned. Terese explains to them that she's had a family emergency, which means that Chloe will need to look after Pierce Greyson. Paul asks Leo to take over the budget meeting; he doesn't know how long he and Terese will be.
Paul and Terese leave; Chloe wonders what the emergency is.
LEO: I guess if she wants to tell me, she'll tell me…
Shortly afterwards, Leo mopes at reception, hoping Terese will call and explain things. He tells Chloe that he hates seeing Terese so upset and not being able to help.
CHLOE: Secret relationships are PDA- free zones – you knew that going in.
LEO: Yeah, but why confide in Dad and not me?
CHLOE: I'm sure she'll tell you later.
Chloe rips her dress on the filing cabinet, exposing her undies – she panics, as Pierce the ‘merlot magnate' is due any second! Enlisting Leo's help, she improvises, by extending the tear of her dress so it goes all the way down, and holding the whole thing together with dozens of safety pins. Pierce Greyson arrives while this is all going on, and watches discreetly, with interest!
LEO: It actually kind of works. I mean, it's a bit revealing…
Pierce comes over to make himself known, and Chloe shakes his hand, explaining Terese has been delayed in a meeting and sends her apologies.
CHLOE: She's asked me to attend to your every need.
PIERCE: Hopefully that doesn't mean looking after my wardrobe!
Chloe looks sheepish, and takes him away to get acquainted.
Terese, Bea and Ned are at a table when Mark comes in. He's spoken to the police; they can file a missing person report, but since Piper's an adult, their view is that she's entitled to go where she wants. Terese says Paul's trying to get the police to track Piper's phone, but doesn't think it'll work. Mark says the cops are still searching for Cassius, so hopefully they'll find Piper along with him.
TERESE: We need to find Piper before she gets to Cassius!
MARK: Aaron's trying to locate Elissa – and he's going to contact Louise, see if she has anything else to say.
TERESE: Do you think Louise knows Cassius?!
MARK: I dunno – but it's worth a shot.
Ned and Bea decide to head to the backpackers', to look in Cassius's room for clues and to ask other residents if they know anything. Mark says if they ask for Leo's permission, they won't need a warrant. Terese says she'll call Leo to ask, and then Xanthe, to see if she knows anything. Mark says he'll call Sonya in California, to see if she can point him to info from Cassius's employment forms.
NED: You know, he did cover a shift for me at Lassiter's about, I dunno, six weeks ago?
Terese says that he would have filled out paperwork, as they don't pay casuals cash- in- hand. She and Mark prepare to head off to check the hotel records…
Bea has had no luck getting info on Cassius from the other residents, and Ned hasn't found anything in his room except an orange sock – Cassius having taken everything else. They sit on the stairs together.
NED: I wish I'd woken Piper up last night.
BEA: Oh, don't say that. It still mightn't have made a difference. When you're into someone, and you hear something bad about them, all you want to do is just have them tell you everything's gonna be alright. Sometimes you don't want people telling you the truth, because you don't want to hear the truth. Even if it's staring you in the face.
Bea is evidently getting upset about Finn, and Ned takes her hand.
NED: Hey, Bea – it's cool. Finn can't get you. I won't let that happen… Better?
BEA (smiling): Yeah.
NED: I'd better give you your hand back!
BEA: If you want…
They keep holding hands – but Ned spots something in the room above, and goes to look. It's a piece of paper with a phone number for a guy named Craig. Ned goes to call the number.
Chloe is giving Pierce the guided tour. She offers him the chance to sample the hotel's wines, and proves herself to be pretty knowledgeable – explaining that her mum worked in a cellar door, so it was always ‘like, our equivalent of the footie'.
CHLOE: We even had our favourite ‘teams'. Mum's a Coonawarra girl, but I'm Barossa through and through!
PIERCE: What, no Victorian ‘teams'?
CHLOE: Well, I'm pretty loyal to my home state – but, if pressed, I rate Heathcote and Rutherglen.
PIERCE: I actually own vineyards there.
CHLOE: Excellent Pinot Noir and Grenache!
PIERCE: Anything that could be improved?
CHLOE: Well, a few years ago, you pushed back harvest dates to chase high scores in US wine magazines with over- ripe wines. Consumers felt ripped off. But you're back now!
PIERCE: You've done your research!
He presents Chloe with a Cash4Company business card that he found on the floor in the lift, and asks her about it. Chloe quickly says it's not associated with the hotel, and offers to show him the day spa. Pierce looks curious as he follows her…
Ned finishes his phone call with ‘Craig'. He explains to Bea that Cassius sold his car to Craig before he left for $500. Bea's surprised as the car is worth more than that; Ned points out that it suggests Cassius was in a hurry to sell, and could mean he's planning to leave the state or even the country.
NED: They've got him on a no- fly list.
BEA: He could have a fake passport. We need to see that car.
NED: Yeah, I asked – but if we want to see it, we have to buy the car off him (…) He said if we want to see it, we've got to pay $1,000.
Bea suggests they tell the police, so they could seize the car for evidence. But Ned says Craig is planning to get it washed in the next half hour, so wants a quick decision from them. Neither of them have a spare $1,000 to hand, but Ned thinks he knows someone who will, and they rush off…
Mark, Terese, Bea and Ned have convened in Terese's office; Terese is writing a $1,000 cheque for Bea and Ned to buy the car with. She hasn't found any evidence from payroll that Cassius has been on the books during the last financial year. Bea surmises that someone must have paid him cash- in- hand when he took on Ned's shift recently.
TERESE: They'll be in trouble if they did.
Ned and Bea leave to purchase the car. Mark is still rifling through paperwork.
MARK: Here's a record with Cassius's name on it. It's from… November!
TERESE: Hold on – that's odd!
MARK: Yeah. He was one of a bunch of casuals that came in on the sixth…
TERESE: That was the night of the gala! Cassius wasn't even here then!
MARK: Well, according to this he was. He was definitely in Erinsborough. On the night Hamish was killed!
Paul runs into Chloe in the courtyard, and asks why he's found a Cash4Company business card lying on the ground. Chloe says she thinks one of the kitchenhands has been making copies!
PAUL: And you still don't think that your extracurricular activities are hurting this hotel, eh?
CHLOE: Well, I can't be held responsible for his juvenile behaviour!
Paul asks after Pierce Greyson; Chloe says he's just making some calls, but assures him she's giving him the red carpet treatment. Paul eyes Chloe's outfit witheringly.
PAUL: And where exactly does this red carpet lead? The nearest S&M ball?
CHLOE: Hello? Liz Hurley? Versace? The most famous dress of all time?
Paul doesn't dignify this with a response. Chloe asks if Paul wants to meet Pierce, but he's still tied up with Terese's emergency. Pierce appears nearby, and overhears, lurking, as Paul tells Chloe not to let him find any more of the business cards lying around.
PAUL: The last thing I want is our reputable clientele finding them.
Pierce looks curious as Paul walks inside. Chloe spots Pierce and waves him over.
Terese reports to Paul and Mark that neither Xanthe nor Aaron have had any luck with Piper's whereabouts. Paul has had more success, though; he's spoken to Courtney, who has told him she took photos of all the staff on the night of the Guy Fawkes Gala. Terese is sceptical that he was even there, and confirms Cassius never mentioned to her that he'd worked at the hotel before.
MARK: For such a big night, it's weird he didn't say anything.
TERESE: Unless he had a reason not to.
They scroll through the photos on Paul's laptop and quickly find one of a topless, masked Cassius at the gala, serving wine to guests.
MARK: We know that someone knocked on the Cannings' door that night. Sheila always thought it was Hamish – but what if it wasn't?
TERESE: We need to call Sheila.
Chloe is talking Pierce through Lassiter's events facilities over drinks. Pierce asks Sheila for the bill, but Chloe tells him it's on the house.
PIERCE (to Sheila): Your service was superb, and I insist on showing my appreciation.
SHEILA: And I insist on letting you! I won't be offering further services, though – unlike some women I could mention.
CHLOE: Thank you, Sheila – that will be all!
Sheila bustles off to answer a phone call from Mark, while Pierce asks Chloe what that was about. She brushes it off as ‘Sheila being Sheila'. Chloe suggests they go back to the hotel so he can see the ballroom, but Pierce is more interested in sticking around for another drink. He mentions a wine he wants to get her opinion on, and Chloe awkwardly agrees to stay for another.
Paul is with Terese. He's pulled up contact details for all the staff that worked on the night of the gala, and suggests they get in touch with them all to see if they can find any leads on Cassius. Terese is becoming frantic with worry, and Paul reassures her.
PAUL: Remember – focus on what we know for sure.
TERESE: Everything I know for sure is bad! The only explanation that makes sense is that Cassius had something to do with Hamish's death. And now my daughter's gone to see him, and nobody can contact her. I mean, I've already lost one child…
PAUL: Oh, come on – don't do that (…) Catastrophising will not help. But finding out everything we know about Cassius will.
TERESE: He's been in my house. He's been in all of our houses. And now Piper's started spending the night with him – she loves him. And he loves her.
Paul is holding her by the arms again.
PAUL: And he loves her! Can you honestly imagine him hurting her?
TERESE: No. But I couldn't imagine this either.
PAUL: Listen – we are going to find her, and we are going to bring her back safely, okay?
TERESE: How do you know?
PAUL: Because I'm never going to let you get hurt again.
He hugs her, just as Leo comes in and looks jealous.
Mark is talking to Sheila, and explains that they think Cassius knew Hamish.
SHEILA: And you think that Cassius did what Tyler's in prison for?
MARK: We're trying to find out as much information as possible.
SHEILA: But I didn't see Cassius that night. I had other things on my mind.
MARK: So what about this knock at the door?
SHEILA: Well, I always thought it was a bit strange. Because there wasn't enough time for Hamish to get from the front door to the backyard. So it would make sense that it was somebody else.
MARK: But you definitely didn't see anybody?
SHEILA: No. Oh, poor Tyler…
Sheila agrees to ask around, and to let Mark know if she sees Piper or Cassius.
MARK: And the police. He could be dangerous.
As Mark leaves, he speaks to Chloe, saying something's come up that she should know about. He sees Pierce coming back to the table, and says he'll tell her later once she's finished with her ‘friend'. Chloe insists Pierce is just a hotel guest, but he's overheard this and, once Mark has left, asks Chloe what the deal is. She insists Mark's just being an annoying big brother.
PIERCE: Do you know how I made my money?
CHLOE: You're really smart and work hard?
PIERCE: And I'm good at reading people. You get hunches about them.
He follows a hunch now, by dialling the number from the business card he found on his phone. Sure enough, Chloe's mobile rings – proving that she's responsible for Cash4Company.
PIERCE: Sure you don't want to get that? Might be a potential client.
Chloe looks awkward.
Pierce and Chloe leave the pub as she tries to explain. She admits she's behind the escort service, but insists it's a ‘G- rated' service that's provided. She didn't feel it was appropriate to discuss it with him earlier in her capacity as Terese's EA, as it's a side business and has nothing to do with the hotel. Chloe hopes it won't affect Pierce's decision whether to use Lassiter's for corporate events.
CHLOE: I'll resign, if need be.
PIERCE: Don't be silly. There is one thing I'd like you to do, however.
CHLOE: What's that?
PIERCE: Let me hire you.
Chloe looks awkward.
A road somewhere
Ned and Bea have got their hands on Cassius's car, and are searching it for clues – but it ‘looks clean'. The only thing left in it is a sat- nav, which gives Bea an idea – she looks in the location history on the device, and finds three recent addresses Cassius has driven to before selling the car.
NED: You are a genius.
BEA: Finally, he admits it!
Ned decides to go and check out the addresses, and Bea tells him she's coming too.
NED: Cassius might be dangerous.
BEA: Then we need to stop talking and get on the road. I hope Piper's okay.
They drive off in the car.
