- Aaron strains his back while clearing up at The Shed, but tells Chloe to keep it from David and Paul
- Clive gets jealous when Sheila mourns Russell; she assures him it's him she wants a future with
- Elissa has a chance encounter with Piper at the book exchange
- Cassius reminds Elissa that Aaron had a photo of her; Piper could have seen it and recognised her
- Cassius confines Elissa to her hotel room until it's time for her flight
- But Ned catches Cassius coming out of her room, and says Cassius owes him some answers
Ned has concluded Cassius is cheating on Piper with whoever's in the hotel room, especially following his lie that he'd gone to work in Eden Hills. Cassius insists he isn't cheating, and explains that the woman in the hotel room is his mother. Ned laughs disbelievingly.
CASSIUS: She turned up uninvited, and I'd rather that Piper doesn't know.
NED: Yeah, why?!
CASSIUS: Because she's not happy about us being together.
NED: And you couldn't just tell Piper that?
CASSIUS: … Mum's had mental health issues. She's a lot to handle. And she's not gonna change her mind about us. Please – I'm trying to protect Piper from a mess that's not her problem.
NED: So you want me to lie to my sister?
CASSIUS: For her sake as much as mine.
Susan is having a meeting with Aaron and David as their celebrant, talking them through the itinerary of the wedding. She says she's working on a speech for them which she'll show them when she's finished, and says she hasn't put down an overall time estimate as she wasn't sure whether Paul, Aaron's mum Fay or David's mum Kim would be doing readings, etc.
David and Aaron haven't thought about that (come on guys, it's virtually a week away!) and they don't know if Kim will make the wedding because of her hip operation. David hasn't had time to follow up with her because of all his surgical training at the hospital. Clearly frustrated that David hasn't got round to it, Aaron says they can only wait so long.
DAVID: I'm worried that if I force the issue, then she'll get scared off and just say it's all too much.
AARON: I know, I know. But at the same time, we've got to finalise the seating plan, we've got the catering…
DAVID: I know, I know. I'm sorry. I will call.
Clive is looking glum in the back garden, when Sheila comes out with tea for them both. They are both wearing dressing gowns, and Clive seems embarrassed.
CLIVE: I don't understand. I've never had this problem before.
SHEILA: Oh, you're worrying about it too much.
CLIVE: It's embarrassing!
SHEILA: Oh, well, these things happen.
CLIVE: Well… or don't! Last night was a non- event.
SHEILA: Nobody's keeping score.
CLIVE: I am! It's not like I don't want to.
SHEILA: Well, sometimes it's good to take things slow – keeps up the suspense!
CLIVE: That's about the only thing I am keeping up!
SHEILA: You're being too hard on yourself!
SHEILA: It's not about what happens in the bedroom. Just being around you is pleasure enough for me. Oh, Clive – you're a good man. And a hard man –
SHEILA: I mean, a good man is hard to find! It doesn't bother me at all.
But the fact she heads straight to Dipi and Susan to gossip about it may suggest otherwise…
SHEILA: He could always rise to the occasion, and now it's just a damp squid! (…) Maybe I shouldn't have done that whole gorilla thing!
Susan says it could be down to fatigue, stress or some other medical reason.
SHEILA: He's as fit as a Mallee bull!
DIPI: No, but sometimes the healthiest relationships can hit a road bump.
SUSAN: Absolutely. Look at me and Karl. We've just come out of the longest dry spell we've ever had!
Well, presumably not counting the several times you've divorced him, Susan!
SHEILA: How'd you get him going?
Susan explains how Karl and Shane thought their wives were using Cassius as a kind of visual stimulation, and that ‘just the thought of it' was enough to inspire Karl to do some ‘au naturale' gardening.
SHEILA: So you think I should do some au naturale gardening?
Sheila wonders whether Clive is too good for her, but Dipi tells her not to doubt herself. Sheila thanks them both for their input, but…
SHEILA: If he doesn't get over this problem soon, I'm going to have to assume that the reason is me.
SUSAN: No, Sheila!
But she walks off.
Piper is heading back to work having dropped Xanthe off at her physio appointment. Ned asks her how things are going with Cassius. Piper says she's just trying to take things easy, as Ned suggested.
In Elissa's room…
CASSIUS: He's probably with her right now, Mum.
ELISSA: Stay calm. You need to think rationally. You told him I'm your mother; it's the truth!
CASSIUS: But Piper's gonna want to know why I kept you from her.
ELISSA: By tonight, I'll be halfway to the other side of the world. You can say whatever you need to smooth things over.
Cassius says the pressure's getting to him; Elissa assures him it'll be alright.
ELISSA: There's no evidence to link you to Hamish's death.
CASSIUS: That they've found. Once Piper gets suspicious, she'll join the dots.
Ned asks Piper where she goes from here with Cassius, now he's told her he loves her.
NED: What's next? Meet the family?
PIPER: No, I don't think that's going to be on the agenda.
PIPER: I mean, the only family Cass has is his mum. And I don't see her turning up, not from what I've heard.
Cassius accuses Elissa of wrecking everything by turning up; she says that's the last thing she wanted, but he's terrified Ned will tell her about his mum being in town.
ELISSA: Perhaps you should leave before Piper finds out and starts asking questions. I need you, Cass. I've been all alone these past few months – I've missed you so much. I can't have you found out – locked up. How would I survive?
CASSIUS: I should've made you turn around and go straight back.
Piper tells Ned that she gets the impression Cassius's mum is mentally ill, and that he had a pretty rocky childhood with her; she was in hospital at least once, and he had to look after her.
PIPER: But that's where all of his compassion comes from.
Cassius has decided he's going with Elissa back to Paris.
CASSIUS: It's the only way to protect you and Piper from what I've done.
Elissa seems pleased about this. Cassius tells her to wait here while he goes to get his stuff together.
Piper rushes off back to work, and Ned looks conflicted.
Aaron is struggling with his back pain, and takes some painkillers. Paul turns up, and congratulates him on getting fitness class sizes and staff ratios back on track. But he hectors Aaron about being lacklustre in his social media promotions. Aaron points out that that's because Paul made him sack a staff member and now he has extra work to do. But Paul doesn't want excuses.
AARON: You're right. I should be putting in more effort.
Aaron gets a text saying that the wedding rings have arrived, but that they need to be picked up today. He's about to message David to ask him to collect them, but Paul points out that David has an important surgery to observe today; Aaron needs to handle it. Aaron says he can't do that and put up loads of social media content.
PAUL: Find a way of doing both.
Ned is telling Bea about Cassius and his story about his mother. He admits that from talking to Piper, it does seem as if Cassius has some issues with his mum. But Ned still thinks Cassius shouldn't be keeping Piper in the dark about it; he doesn't like being asked to lie, but…
NED: You can see he loves Piper.
BEA: Yeah, well, trust that, then! Maybe this one lie is worth it.
Amy is working at another table. Elly comes in and asks if she fancies a drink and catch- up later; she wants to hear all about Amy's progress with Dr Rob. They agree to meet in The Waterhole later. Elly then spots Ned and Bea, and is surprised to see them together. They seem to be arranging another night- walk. Elly looks a bit suspicious, and makes her way to the counter.
Dipi comes in; Amy remarks that she's changed her clothes since earlier. Dipi says she changed when she popped home, but quickly changes the subject. Amy looks suspicious.
Clive has turned up with surprise flowers and wine for Sheila, telling her they have some unfinished business to attend to. He kisses her, and tells her that things are ‘looking up'!
SHEILA: Oh, they are, aren't they?! Maybe we should slip into something more comfortable?
CLIVE: Like what?
SHEILA: Like the house.
But Clive has other ideas – he throws Sheila's shopping bags on the floor to make space on the garden table, and we hear a cracking sound.
SHEILA: Oh… The eggs!
But she soon forgets about them, as Clive pashes her and they fall back onto the table together…
Aaron comes in. Amy congratulates him on the new promo video that he's put on social media, which seems to have generated a lot of interest. Dipi comes over and demands that Aaron and David make themselves available for another dance rehearsal before the wedding – but Aaron is clearly very stressed, and flies off the handle.
AARON: I'm a dancer, okay?! I think I can handle a couple of cross body leads and a dip, alright? So you don't have to go on about it.
Dipi is a bit taken aback by his outburst. Aaron apologises immediately, but Dipi tells him it's normal to get like this before a wedding; she's seen it before, and can fix it. She tells him to get back to her when he's locked in a time with David, and heads into the kitchen.
AMY: Are you okay?
AARON: I'm a horrible person.
Amy assures him he isn't; Aaron explains work is just busy, and that he isn't sleeping well. Amy reminds him that Paul is on hand to help, and Aaron doesn't correct her! He does admit he can't lean on David for support because he has his surgical training.
AMY: You guys are about to get married. You need to work as a team. If David isn't pulling his weight, you need to let him know.
An anxious Cassius has summoned Piper to The Waterhole.
CASSIUS: I had to see you.
PIPER: You seem a bit… is everything okay? (…) Cass, if this is about me not saying what you said to me…
CASSIUS: No, no – it's not that.
PIPER: No, because when you told me that you loved me, I just didn't know how to explain –
CASSIUS: No, I didn't mean for it to slip out like that.
PIPER: No, Cass, it was fine. More than! I just needed time for it to sink in.
CASSIUS: Don't worry. You don't have to say or do anything. Just know that you're perfect how you are, and that I always mean that.
PIPER: Cass, I feel the same. And maybe I've just been too scared to say it until now, but I feel like I'm falling in love with you too.
Ned appears behind them – he's overheard everything. He apologises for his bad timing, and congratulates them. Piper awkwardly thanks him, and goes to get them some drinks.
CASSIUS: Thank you for not saying anything.
NED: Doesn't mean I'm happy about it.
CASSIUS: Well, it means everything to me.
NED: Just remember, she's my sister. And I'm watching you.
Cassius returns to Elissa's hotel room; she's surprised to see he doesn't have his bags for the flight.
CASSIUS: I'm not coming with you (…) Ned hasn't said anything to Piper, and he's not going to.
ELISSA: That's a relief, but it's not the main issue! (…) You're too vulnerable here.
CASSIUS: I'm not leaving Piper.
ELISSA: What if Ned changes his mind?
CASSIUS: That's a risk I have to take.
ELISSA: Have to?
CASSIUS: … Piper told me that she's falling in love with me.
ELISSA: Oh, Cass.
CASSIUS: No, she's had her heart broken once. I'm not gonna do it to her again.
ELISSA: If you insist on staying here, then I'm staying too.
CASSIUS: No, no – you can't. If Aaron sees you –
ELISSA: Then I'll go to Sydney. That way, I'll be close. It's only a matter of time before she finds out what you've done.
CASSIUS: No, she won't. You're the link between me and Dad.
ELISSA: And the medallion!
CASSIUS: If it hasn't been found yet, it won't be.
ELISSA: Can you really keep it together and not say anything?
CASSIUS: I love her. I have to.
Elly is at a table with Bea, helping her with her TAFE work. Sheila comes in to touch base with Susan and Dipi; and it's clear from her demeanour that the situation has transformed on the Clive front!
SHEILA: Must be the afterglow!
SUSAN: Dirty girl!
DIPI: So you and Clive are back on track?
SHEILA: On overdrive. I don't know what happened after we talked earlier…
Dipi looks shifty.
SHEILA: … but he definitely is back.
To celebrate, Sheila invites Dipi, Susan and their husbands over for a barbecue. They agree to see her there.
Back at Elly and Bea's table, Bea admits she's finding her dyslexia much easier to cope with now Elly's taught her how to ‘retrain her brain'. Elly invites Bea to join her and Amy for a drink later, but Bea says she'll pass – not telling Elly about her planned walk with Ned. Elly brings up Ned herself, saying she saw them talking earlier.
ELLY: I didn't know you knew him well?
BEA: Well, he's a tattoo artist. I like tattoos.
ELLY: Which probably gives you more in common with him than I ever did.
BEA: It's actually so weird to think of you two as a couple.
BEA: Well, Mark is so straight – so dependable. And he loves rules.
ELLY: There is so much more to Mark than that, thank you!
BEA: Yeah, but Ned's the complete opposite – he's a complicated rebel that's trying to escape his dark past.
ELLY: So you *do* know him well?
BEA: … Well, based on what you've told me.
ELLY: Well, it's a very accurate description.
Bea changes the subject, but Elly's suspicions have already been aroused…
Aaron has dropped round to see David, who is super- excited about a quintuple heart bypass he saw today.
DAVID: I do appreciate all the work you've been doing on our wedding so I can concentrate on this.
AARON: About that, David – we need to talk.
David interrupts, saying he hasn't called Kim yet – but promises to Aaron that he'll do it tomorrow. At this point, Paul walks in, cutting Aaron's hopes of further conversation dead. David tells both of them that he knows he hasn't been pulling his weight with the wedding, but that the surgical placement has shown him he's chosen the right speciality.
DAVID: I really appreciate everything you've both done to help me. I never thought I'd be this lucky.
Paul says he couldn't be more proud of David – and Aaron, who did a good job today. Hearing all this, Aaron loses the heart to tell David what's really been going on, and prepares to head back to work to supervise some evening sessions. David seems concerned that he's working nights, but Aaron says they're just down a trainer – it's nothing for David to worry about.
Aaron kisses David goodbye, then gets in the lift. His back begins to play up again, and he groans with pain.
Elissa is checking out at reception; Ned offers to take her bags to the taxi.
NED: Before you go – Cassius told you who I am?
ELISSA: You're Piper's brother.
NED: So if anyone gets to disapprove of her boyfriend, it's me. The thing is, though, I think those two are good for each other. So you won't have any trouble from me.
Elissa is then horrified to see Aaron coming out of the lift! She hurries away from a confused Ned and past Aaron, but he catches a glimpse of her as she exits the hotel!
AARON: Ned – who was that?
NED: Just a guest.
But Aaron looks thoughtful…
Susan and Dipi have arrived for the barbecue with Sheila and Clive. (Karl and Shane aren't here, because they're Not In This Episode™.) Susan treads on one of the smashed eggs from earlier, and Sheila innocently wonders how that got there! Susan goes to track down Karl, while Sheila goes inside to work on the salad, leaving Clive alone with Dipi.
CLIVE: You haven't mentioned anything to Susan and Sheila, have you?
DIPI: Err, no – not a word. To anyone.
CLIVE: Thank you. It's a bit awkward – you helping me out. But just important that Sheila doesn't find out.
DIPI: I am a woman of my word. And I'm happy to provide you that extra bit of magic you needed.
Clive smiles. Just what is going on?
A tipsy Amy and Elly stagger out of The Waterhole after a good drink and catch- up session. Elly's looking forward to sleeping in her own bed tonight, mentioning that Mark usually prefers her to stay at No 24 with him.
ELLY: I don't think he feels comfortable at my house.
AMY: No, I get it. I don't think I could take Rob home, knowing Dad's down the hallway.
ELLY: Well, one step at a time, hey?
AMY: I'm happy to keep things on simmer.
They hug, and Amy leaves. Elly then notices Ned and Bea, chatting and walking by the lake. She approaches them, looking not best pleased.
ELLY: So this is why you didn't come out tonight?
Bea and Ned look sheepish.
