Erinsborough High School
Bea meets Elly outside so they can go for lunch together. Susan turns up and Elly invites her to join them, but she's headed to the hospital to visit Xanthe. Liz turns up, and Bea and Elly are surprised to see she's still in town. Susan admits she suggested that Liz should stay, to prove she's committed to making amends with her daughters when they're ready.
Liz makes a start by suggesting she could take the girls for lunch, so they could talk. Bea is sceptical that there's any point, but Liz says it would be a start - and with Susan's encouragement, Elly and Bea grudgingly agree.
BEA: Let's get this over with.
Lassiter's
Leo is in the manager's office when Terese comes in, and sidles over the desk.
TERESE: We need to talk (...) It's about what happened before. When you zipped my dress up.
LEO: Oh.
She sits on the desk and gets up close to Leo.
TERESE: I can't stop thinking about it. I know I should, but I can't. And I wondered, was it the same for you? Did you feel something?
LEO: You know I did.
TERESE: I wasn't sure.
LEO: It's driving me crazy. Look, I know you should be off-limits - but I can't get you out of my head.
TERESE: What are we gonna do about it?
She moves in, as if to kiss him. Suddenly we cut to Chloe trying to get Leo's attention, and realise he's been daydreaming all along. She's come to show him the web stats for the Christmas in July video - but when he starts swiping right, he finds the pictures of Aaron and Ned in their swimmers posing for the proposal promo shoot!
Chloe admits that Ned took David's place in the promo shoot, and that David doesn't know about it. Leo isn't best pleased, and says he'll have to tell David. Chloe asks him to give Aaron a chance to tell him first.
The Waterhole
Liz has bought a bottle of wine for her, Bea and Elly. Elly points out she can't drink alcohol as she's going back to school this afternoon, while Bea says she'll be working with heavy machinery at the garage, so can't either.
LIZ: Oh, right, okay. Well, it just means more for me, I guess!
She pours herself a generous glass, while Elly and Bea look aggrieved at their own lack of drinks! Mark arrives, and Elly introduces him to Liz as Bea's boss and her 'friend'. Liz seems impressed by Mark, but tells him she won't ask him to join them as she needs time with her girls. Bea and Elly continue to look bemused as Liz tries to prompt some conversation.
No 24
Aaron is showing David the photos of him and Ned from the promo shoot. He's expecting David to be annoyed, but David takes it pretty well.
DAVID: How long did it take you to talk Ned into swimmers?
Aaron declares that Ned was a 'total show-pony' once he got into it! He apologises for not saying anything, but David understands why he didn't want to pass up the free wedding photography.
DAVID: And besides, you two make such a cute couple!
AARON: Oh, don't even joke about that! You're the only one I want.
DAVID: I know. Which is honestly why I'm not that fussed. But we'll have to wear more than swimmers at our wedding - otherwise Mum will have a heart attack.
We get an update on David's mum Kim and her hip operation - it's gone well, and he hopes she should be able to make the wedding.
The Flametree Retreat
Terese and Paul are having brunch in the garden restaurant. Paul asks if they can do it again at some point.
TERESE: ... I don't think so, Paul.
PAUL: Why? We're good together. I mean, you have to admit that.
TERESE: I admit that you give good banter. That's never been our problem.
PAUL: And what about our chemistry? I mean, you can't forget that; that's off the charts!
TERESE: True. At times. But that's not enough to build a long-lasting relationship. I want someone I can trust. I want someone who won't break my heart.
PAUL: Yeah. But haven't I proven that I can change?
TERESE: Today is lovely. And the Christmas video was incredibly special. But come on, Paul - I know you. You can't sustain this. It's not in your nature!
PAUL: Yeah, it is, when it comes to you. See, all I want is to make you happy.
TERESE: But when you've got what you want, you'll just get bored. And you'll just go off and look for another challenge. You've done it again and again.
PAUL: Yeah - thing is - none of those women were you.
The Waterhole
Liz's awkward lunch with her daughters continues, as she quickly knocks back the wine! Elly is talking about Mark, and how it isn't the right time for them - she doesn't think it's wise to start a relationship after the trauma they've had with Finn.
BEA: Especially since Finn is still out there.
ELLY: Exactly.
BEA: Yeah, I just wish he was in jail. And then I'd feel safe. And we'd both be safe.
LIZ: Do you know, I think it's really horrible that we have to be on our guard all the time. But it's just the way things are, isn't it? I mean, I remember when I was shopping for a new car. The salesman was so charming. I mean, he complimented me on my shoes, for heaven's sake. Now what man notices a woman's shoes? And then, smooth as silk, he suggested the next model up would be more my style.
ELLY (fuming): It's not the same thing.
LIZ: Yes, I know. I meant - well, we don't have to talk about that anyway.
BEA: It's nice to know that you can write it off so easily.
Liz changes the subject, saying Elly should 'snap Mark up' if she wants babies!
LIZ: Not that I'm in the market to be a grandmother just yet, but all my friends do have their photos to show off.
Liz glugs more wine, and Elly tells her to slow down.
LIZ: Why? I'm not driving!
BEA: And there's no other reason why you should be focused and sober right now?!
LIZ: I'm sorry? Have I said something wrong?
BEA: You are so full of it! All this talk about being different: you haven't changed!
LIZ: We're here, aren't I? We're talking, I'm listening.
BEA: No. You're doing what you always do. Making everything about you.
Elly and Bea both head back to work, leaving Liz looking perplexed.
Harold's Café
Ned is buying a coffee, when Leo comes in. He accuses Ned of putting the idea in his head about having Feelings™ for Terese, which he now can't get out of his mind. Ned denies responsibility!
LEO: If you told me I was obsessed with pineapples, I'd start thinking about pineapples. It's the power of suggestion.
NED: Hmm. You know what you should do? Taste the pineapple.
LEO: What? I'm not taking the pineapple from my dad!
Leo points out that Ned of all people should know that's a bad idea, after what happened with Lauren. But Ned retorts that unlike Lauren, Terese is a free agent.
NED: And your Feelings™ are just as valid as Paul's.
LEO: There are no Feelings™.
NED: Okay. Well, good luck with your denial! I hope you're better at it than me.
Lassiter's
Chloe has summoned Aaron to deliver her latest proposals for commoditising his wedding; Bespoke Tailors want to provide the suits, while Village Tarts are talking to her about the cake!
CHLOE: Plus, I think I've lined up some doves for you! (...) The suit guys want a photoshoot. Yadda-yadda, gay weddings are a big deal (...) We can get the large cake for the price of the small if we tag them in at least ten pics.
Chloe asks for the go ahead to approve these and the doves. But Aaron wants to check with David first. However, given how he reacted to the photos with Ned, Aaron thinks there's a good chance he'll say yes...
The Waterhole
Susan finds a sloshed and bitter Liz alone at her table.
LIZ: Here to offer some more counsel, are you?
SUSAN: I was trying to help.
LIZ: Well, fat lot of good it did. They walked out. But I imagine they've told you that.
SUSAN: Elly and I spoke, yes.
LIZ: Well, I tried. But they obviously wanted to be angry with someone, and I was a convenient scapegoat.
SUSAN: You're their mother. They want to be close to you. They care about you, but they need to know that you care, too.
LIZ: I care! (...)
SUSAN: They need you to listen, Liz. To really listen. To think about what they need. Just not what you need, and what you want, and how you feel.
LIZ: I do that.
SUSAN: Oh -
LIZ: I do!
SUSAN: Well, I think Bea and Elly would disagree.
LIZ: Excuse me for not being a perfect mother, like Saint Susan!
SUSAN: Oh, here we go.
LIZ: Excuse me for having my own life and not sacrificing everything at the altar of perfect motherhood.
SUSAN: Okay - this is clearly not a good time, so I'm gonna go.
LIZ: Oh! Off to solve the Middle East crisis, are you?
SUSAN: Go and sleep it off, Liz!
LIZ: Oh, more excellent counsel from Saint Susan. Must be really nice always knowing all about everything everyone should do!
But Susan has already left!
Harold's Café
Paul and Leo are at a table. Paul says he needs to think of a new romantic gesture to woo Terese. Leo is reluctant to get involved again, telling Paul to do whatever feels right. Paul continues to push, saying what genius the Josh video was. But Leo says he doesn't feel comfortable - the impetus needs to come from Paul himself.
PAUL: Please. I may never get another chance like this.
LEO: Okay. Fine.
Lassiter's
Leo comes into the office after hours, and sneaks a look in Terese's diary, presumably for ideas of how to help Paul woo her. He notices her birthday is coming up, with a note saying 'don't forget to celebrate'. Replacing the diary, Leo also finds a photo of Terese in the skimpy costume that she wore to promote the Guy Fawkes Gala. He looks conflicted, before leaving the office.
The Waterhole
Finishing off her wine, Liz puts on her coat and stumbles out. Meanwhile, Aaron is telling David about Chloe's ideas to commoditise their wedding in exchange for free stuff. David is not enthusiastic.
AARON: We're gonna have doves. Doves, David!
DAVID: Isn't the whole dove thing a bit cruel?
AARON: ... Okay, forget the doves.
DAVID: Posing for a suit ad and posting pics of our wedding cake - it turns the whole thing into a commercial production.
AARON: Yeah, but it could be a fun production!
DAVID: Our wedding day will be fun when we stand in front of our family and friends, and declare our love. I don't want anything to take away from that.
Aaron says Chloe's put in a lot of effort for it, but David remains firm.
DAVID: Let's go back to our original idea. You, me, a park, some nice wine... and wowing everyone with our amazing dance.
Aaron agrees, saying he can see where David's coming from. David offers to tell Chloe, but Aaron says it's better if he does it, so she can yell at Aaron instead!
No 24
Chloe is disappointed with the news that David wants to cancel the plans to hold the wedding at Lassiter's, and all the sponsorship deals. Chloe tries to persuade Aaron otherwise, but Aaron insists he's putting David first.
AARON: Why don't you find somebody else's wedding to pimp? Surely it can't be that hard? People get married all the time.
CHLOE: Like it's that simple (!)
AARON: Well, if anyone can do it, it's you.
No 28
Bea is talking about how she's been made to feel worthless by Liz over the years, suggesting she's paved the way for Bea to fall for Finn's lies. Elly feels the same way.
BEA: Makes us pretty tragic, huh?
ELLY: No, it makes her tragic. What she did was so bad. Bea, you need to know - I'll always care about how you feel and what you think. And I'll always want to hear what you have to say.
BEA: Thanks. I feel the same.
Liz shows up at the door, still drunk.
LIZ: There are some things that I would like to say in my defence.
ELLY: I don't know if that's a good idea.
LIZ: Well, I do, and I'm the mother! Regardless of what anybody else in this room might think.
BEA: We're not talking while you're like this! (...) Go back to the retreat and have a sleep, Mum!
LIZ: Not until you both apologise for the way you behaved at lunch! (...)
BEA: We don't need your toxic selfishness in our life anymore! You've had so many chances. This all ends now. Goodbye! Get out!
Liz is taken aback by Bea's ferocity, and does as she's told, stumbling out of the door. Bea slams it behind her.
The Waterhole
Leo is sitting by himself, smiling. Ned turns up and says he owes Leo an apology.
LEO: This should be good!
NED: Okay, maybe I was projecting my situation with Lauren onto you. I should've kept my mouth shut.
Ned offers to buy Leo a drink by way of recompense. But Leo says he's already got company. Sure enough, a woman (Tean Murray) emerges from the bathroom and rejoins Leo at the table, teasing him about how the bathrooms are better than those at the backpackers'. They soon depart together, presumably to head back to the hostel and TITTNL™. Ned smiles wryly.
Botanical Gardens
Mark is out jogging, when he finds Liz lying on the grass, apparently unconscious. When he rouses her, she acts confused, and tells him that a man came up from behind her - and that she was 'so scared'. Mark offers to take her to hospital, but Liz refuses. So Mark says he'll take her to the police station instead for first aid. He says he'll call Bea and Elly to tell them to meet there. Liz agrees.
Erinsborough Police Station
Mark explains to Elly, Bea and Susan that he found Liz knocked out in the park. Bea is initially unsympathetic, saying she probably just passed out. But Mark says someone ambushed her and that her purse is missing.
BEA: Did you get a look at him?
LIZ: ... Well, I don't know if I should say.
BEA: It's a yes-or-no question!
LIZ: I didn't want to tell you this. It was him.
She points to a 'wanted' poster on the wall, of Finn Kelly! Everybody looks worried.
