- Paul spotting that Terese and Gary are back together.
- Paul suggesting to Courtney that they elope.
- Courtney begging Paul not to say they didn't get married especially to her dad.
- Gary getting a trial to be a chef at Lassiters.
- Tyler saying his DNA and fingerprints are going to be on the gnome he hit Hamish with.
- Sonya telling Mark the police asked her if he was covering up evidence in the backpacker's crash.
- Mark wiping the gnome clean.
- Tyler asking if Mark is going to own up to wiping the gnome clean.
- Mark being informed he's the chief suspect for Hamish's death.
Det. Graves is interviewing Mark and puts it to him his theory – he was angry and went to confront Hamish but is told that isn't what happened, he didn't go to the Canning's that night. Mishti wants to know why he wiped the gnome clean but he refuses to answer that and instead reiterates that he didn't do anything to Hamish and since he hasn't been arrested, is allowed to go.
Before he leaves the interview room, Det. Graves reminds him that he is suspended, so Mark reaches into his back pocket and pulls out his police ID and throws it onto the table.
The Flametree Retreat (next day)
What previously was Robinsons Motel has now morphed into The Flametree Retreat and the previous reception looks nothing like it did before. It has now quadrupled in size, the logo up on one wall (which is painted a neutral creamy colour), the counter is gone replaced by a normal desk and there is comfortable seating too.
It's all hands on deck though getting the new place set up, even Karl and Susan are lending a hand. Sonya is also helping but her (and Steph's) attention is more drawn to other matters – wondering if Mark has confessed or not yet although as Sonya points out, there is nothing they can do so should concentrate on the launch instead.
“He didn't tell me he was doing that,” Paige comments after she runs into Tyler on the street and he tells her about Mark going to the station to confess about Sonya's shoes. She spots that Tyler is pretty stressed and wonders what else is wrong, but he replies that he's just worried about Mark and promises to keep her updated as she heads off.
In passing, Gary thinks he is doing the right thing by telling Tyler that Mishti is re- investigating things and wanted to give him the heads up before rushing off. As soon as Gary moves away, Tyler gets out his phone and goes to call Mark.
“Did you confess?” Steph asks when she runs into Mark while doing a coffee run to the pub. He confirms he has and that the police will probably call to verify things with her but doesn't think she will be charged since they were more focused on him. “They haven't charged me…yet,” he confirms but has been suspended and is on the verge of being thrown out of the force. “Oh Mark,” Steph replies but Mark admits he has stuffed up and it was time to come clean.
Meanwhile, Paul and Tim run into each other at the bar and Tim has a go at his nemesis for what he perceives is him ruining Courtney's life by marrying her.
TIM: How dare you do that to her.
PAUL: Tim, I didn't marry Courtney. And, while we are confessing, I'd also like to state that nothing physical ever happened between us.
Tim isn't sure whether to believe Paul or not, he saw the wedding ring on her finger, so Paul invites him to sit down so he can explain everything.
Terese introduces Gary to the Lassiters head chef, Aleksander and despite Terese trying to tell him about Gary's great (cooking) qualities, chef doesn't exactly look enthralled especially when Terese kisses Gary before leaving them to it!
“So what was this all about?” Tim asks Paul after he's obviously explained it all while we were at the last scene. “Do I really need to spell it out for you?” Paul sarcastically replies back! Tim asks if this is her way of getting back at him, but Paul explains that may have been how it started out (from her point of view) but goes onto add that Courtney simply wants to “be respected for the smart, dedicated young adult that she's become.”
PAUL: And it means the most coming from a parent.
TIM: Oh? Oh, seriously? I'm taking fatherhood advice from you now, am I? The man who discovers a new love child every month!
PAUL: I'm simply pointing out that you have the potential to have a positive influence on Courtney's life.
TIM: Well you're certainly whistling a different tune that you did last time when you booted me out of the hotel.
PAUL: Yes, because you were suggesting that she was trading her services for money. It's a terrible thing to say to your daughter! You have the chance to make things right with Courtney but if you continue to judge her and withhold affection, she will eventually give up on you. And is that what you really want?
Sonya and Toadie run into Mark in the complex and she thinks it's a good idea that he's been open to his bosses and hopefully should go lenient on him for doing that. Toadie isn't exactly backing his wife up and even Mark knows it will be taken seriously. Mark switches his phone back on and it bleeps away immediately including messages from Tyler - that is also causing him to feel down as he knows Tyler is going through a rough patch and that he may have made things worse for his brother. Toad reassures him that the pressure will lessen once Louise is caught and they bid him farewell as Mark has to return to the station for another interview.
SONYA: I get why he did it, I do but it's so not Mark covering up evidence like that.
TOADIE: I know, he's always had such a rigid moral compass.
SONYA: I know.
Terese is nervous about how Gary's trial is going so is happy to be distracted by Paige talking about her love life. She tells Terese about is pulling away from her (and Gabe) and she's feeling shut out that he's not telling her fully over what is going on at work. Terese tells her not to take it personally, it's just how Mark is and points out to her that he's in a much better place now (compared to when the backpacker's crash happened) after she started moaning over his feelings for Sonya were much stronger than she ever thought.
Gary (complete with a few blue plasters over his hands!) comes out to tell the ladies that lunch will be slightly delayed due to unforeseen delays but does say the trial is going good before heading back to the kitchen.
Courtney is surprised to see Paul back early and the visitor he has brought with him – her dad. Paul tells her that Tim knows everything, and that he did so for her. He then makes himself scarce to allow Tim and Courtney to talk privately.
Courtney wonders why her dad wants to apart of her (future) life given she's usually such a disappointment to him. He explains that he sees so much potential in her and it frustrates him when she doesn't use it like ditching Uni and taking up with Paul. “I'm young and I'm exploring,” is Courtney's justification of what she is doing but feels there is no room for that when he's on her back especially since “success is the only thing you care about.”
TIM: No. No, that's not true. I care about you. Now, I am sorry I said the things when I was last here and I am sorry I've pushed you so hard but I was just looking out for you. And you've got to believe me when I say that I will be happy no matter what path you take.
COURTNEY: Even if I don't go back to Uni?
That might be a bit much for Tim to swallow but he eventually does say it's her choice but has one request of her – that she moves home with him.
TIM: Court, I made a lot of mistakes when you were growing up, apparently I'm still making them now, but I do love you.
COURTNEY: I guess I could come back for a little bit.
Gary has a word with chef and admits he's been slow today but volunteers to stay back to make up for it. “Its fine,” chef replies and pushes past Gary on the stairs to return to the kitchens. Gary is peeved off at chef's attitude towards him on his trial, he is simply after a fair go. He might wish he hadn't said that as chef tells Gary how awful he has been, mostly due to having little training.
CHEF: The only reason you're in my kitchen is because you're sleeping with the boss.
Paul and Terese are having a business meeting and item 2 is him manipulating the Lassiters booking system although he assures her that he's got plans in hand should the police come digging. “Don't tell me, I don't want to know!” she immediately replies but wonders how he will handle things when he is off on his honeymoon. “There isn't going to be one,” he informs her and comes clean that they didn't get married. “Oh,” she quietly replies before asking if Courtney is still going to be the rejuvenation consultant (no) and Terese tries hard to keep the smile off her face!
PAUL: Oh don't pretend you're not over the moon.
TERESE: I'll dance on the ceiling later Paul.
Terese and Susan can't but gossip about Paul and Courtney when they run into each other in the bar. “Do you really think I hurt him that much?” Terese asks and Susan keeping quiet is enough for Terese to question why Paul was so petty. Terese now wonders why she had feelings for Paul in the first place but Susan reminds her that they had a lot of history and urges her not to dwell on it, to focus on what matters now.
The Flametree Retreat
Steph has just heard that The Star isn't going to be sending a reporter to cover the opening (a bigger news story has broken… an elephant being born in the zoo!) and Sonya tries to reassure her it's just the one set- back and the launch will still be great. Oops, she's maybe spoken too soon as Susan discovers the snacks aren't organic protein bars but bars of chocolate instead!
The stress is getting to Steph and Toadie arriving and liking the chocolate and commenting about the elephant hasn't exactly settled her down!
Before she leaves, Courtney hands Paul her resignation letter (she wanted to do things properly) and perhaps suggests that it's time to take the pictures of her down from the walls too. Paul tells her to keep the rings, so she can remember the good times.
COURTNEY: There were a few weren't there?!
COURTNEY: A lesser man would have tried to take advantage of me.
PAUL: It was never about that.
“I'm so pleased everything worked out for you,” he tells her as she gets into the lift.
COURTNEY: Bye Paulie.
PAUL: Bye Courtney.
Terese pours the bubbles ready to celebrate Gary's trial when he returns home (she's got an OJ) but when he does arrive home, he tells her to pour the bubbles back into the bottle as he is chucking it in. She's very confused and Gary explains that he's simply not ready for it, fancy restaurant cooking is a whole different ballgame. “Did I push you too hard?” Terese asks and he replies no, he appreciated the support, but others deserve to be there ahead of him. There is a silver lining though – the trial showed Gary that he really wanted to be a chef but he's got to do it the right way, building up from TAFE because “there is no short cuts.”
Paul has obviously told Leo the truth and he thinks that they will both get fresh starts out of what has happened. Leo's offer to stay with his dad is turned down, and Paul takes his drink out to the balcony.
Tyler is relieved to see his brother back although the voicemail he left was irrelevant, as Mark has already been charged with evidence tampering. Mark adds in that the police think he's got something to do with Hamish's death although quickly adds for Tyler not to panic since there is no proof!
TYLER: This is so messed up, this is all my fault.
MARK: None of this is your fault.
TYLER: Of course it is. It's because of me you're being investigated for a death you had nothing to do with.
Tyler grabs his stuff as he is off to the police station as “they need to know the truth.”
MARK: You can't tell them.
TYLER: I have to.
Mark runs after Mark as they exit #24 to try and persuade him to change his mind because “I can't let you go to jail for something you didn't do.” Tyler still thinks he is the one responsible for what happened no matter how much Mark tries to tell him otherwise.
MARK: Louise is the one responsible for this.
TYLER: Well Louise isn't here, is she?!
Mark wants to at least take some time out and do something constructive to find Louise just in case the police have missed something in their investigations so far. He wants them to go to where Piper was found and track Louise down, but Tyler points out that she won't be “chilling on a beach!”
TYLER: It will be one in a million if we find something.
MARK: She is the only one who knows what happened that night. We'll take her picture, we'll scour the coast, we'll go into the bush. We'll do whatever we can to find that boat and Louise.
TYLER: Mark, you know that's ridiculous.
Looking for a truce, Mark suggests some time out to prevent making any rash decisions.
MARK: Let's just get out of here. Yes?
- Steph in a fluster.
- Strained silence between Steph and Lyn.
- Det. Graves looking for Piper.
- Aaron being told the boat has been found.
- Mark and Tyler at the spot where Piper was found.
- Mark apologising to Paige.
