- Sonya tells Toadie he's her hero, but they should go back to only communicating via email.
- Steph is introduced to Leo's friend (Mannix, although he hasn't been named). She tells Paul he seemed dodgy.
- Leo invites Mishti for a drink.
- Leo warns Mannix that Mishti used to be a cop.
- Finn tells Xanthe that he knows how to fight dirty. Xanthe records him on her phone.
- Finn collapses. Xanthe sends the recording to Mark and then calls an ambulance. She thinks his aneurysm has ruptured.
Unmissably dramatic camera zooms open up this episode. We're treated to close ups galore of the heart monitor, steadicam zooms on the drip, the camera follows the tubes to Finn's arm, which we learn via another steadicam shot is connected to Finn himself! Karl stands over an unconscious Finn and tells him that there is a shortage of beds. Finn's lucky he has an obligation to treat him because every fibre of his being… well we don't get to hear Karl finish his evil monologue because Finn's eyes flutter and he wakes up. They glare at each other.
In the back yard, Gary and Sheila ask Piper how it went trying to talk to Xanthe. Xanthe apparently didn't say much. Sheila says Xanthe's not eating or leaving the house, and she's avoiding social media like the plague. Xanthe meanwhile sits sadly on her bed, crying. Sheila thinks this will be old news after a couple of days. Xanthe apparently apologised to Piper for giving her the cold shoulder after talking to Ben. Piper hopes that she and Ben make up after a few days.
SHEILA: I think it's going to be a long time before things are back to normal. That cretin has really poisoned Xanthe.
Xanthe meanwhile, still in tears, looks at the necklace Finn got her.
Karl checks on Finn, telling him that he's been here for a week and he had a stroke after the aneurysm burst. He's been in a coma ever since. Finn says he can't move his arms or legs. Karl says rehabilitation is possible after physiotherapy, the paralysis may pass but it may be permanent.
A dodgy looking guy in a hoodie (which wouldn't look out of place in the movie Tron) walks past up to Leo's mates' room and knocks. Steph asks if he's after a room, but he tells her he's alright from here. Steph looks suspiciously as he is let into the room and after a moment leaves quickly.
Lassiters Park (possibly)
Sonya is doing her community service in the rain. She's completed 1 hour, 239 to go. She's planting some of the 1000 trees that she had ordered. Toadie's going to collect Nell from day care. Sonya asks if they change plans so she can have Nell tonight and he has her in the morning. Toadie can't, he rearranged his clients so that he could be free to have Nell tonight. Sonya understands and asks for him to forget she asked. She'll have a nice relaxing night on the couch instead.
Leo opens up the Backpackers. Paul arrives and says it's coming along nicely. Leo says they're just waiting on the certificate of final inspection. Paul's been trying to hurry along the new mayor on Leo's behalf, but explains the new mayor is one of Tim Collins' best mates. Leo gets a text from Mishti. He tells Paul they went for a drink, but he won't tell Paul more than that. Paul says Steph isn't over the moon about Leo's mate staying at the hotel. Paul asks if he should be worried. Leo says he shouldn't, he's just an old mate from Sydney. Paul asks why he wanted his mate's name out of the books. Leo says he's a loose cannon but nothing too serious, he just doesn't want a paper trail to come back and bite him and Steph. Paul asks if he has something on Leo. Leo says there's nothing else to it.
Mark asks Karl about Finn being able to make a statement. Karl says he's waiting for neurological tests to show if Finn has lost any cognitive function. They go into Finn's room, Mark asks Finn if he remembers Xanthe making a recording on her phone, confessing to several things he's been accused of. He asks Finn to make an official confession. Finn says he didn't do any of those things. He claims he has no recollection of anything he said before the blood vessel burst, and that he's innocent.
Paige is holding Gabe, while exercising. Jack says they'll have to buy an umbrella to protect Gabe from her dripping sweat. Sonya arrives with something she found outside. It's a birthday present from Paige's mum and dad, Paige says her birthday is in a few days. Sonya asks if Terese is here, she wasn't at her last AA meeting and she wanted to catch up with her. Paige says Terese is at work but she shouldn't be long if she wants to wait. Sonya says she will and sits down.
Sonya asks how Queensland was, and how the family is. Paige says everything was good. She heard about what happened with Finn and asks if Nell is okay after taking those pills. Sonya says she's good and Finn is in hospital, but she's been out of the loop because she's been focusing on her hearing. As she talks Sonya can't help but look emotional at the sight of Paige with Gabe. Paige tells Sonya she's proud of Piper for writing that statement for Sonya. Paige asks if Sonya wants to hold Gabe. Sonya refuses and leaves quickly, saying she'll catch Terese tomorrow.
Mark tells Elly and Ben that it doesn't look good if Finn doesn't confesses, it will probably go to a trial. Elly begs Mark to pressure Finn to confess, but Mark says that would compromise the case. Ben thinks Finn is playing mind games. Mark says Xanthe's recording was in her pocket and so is of poor quality, and Finn claims to have not been of sound mind when he made that confession.
ELLY: So it will come down to Finn's word against Xanthe's.
Sheila passes on the information she got from Mark that it looks like Finn's going to fight this. Gary says they'll fight Finn about this. Piper tells Xanthe if she needs to testify in court, they'll be right by her side. Xanthe says she's the only one who saw everything that Finn did, and the only one stupid enough to get close to him. Piper tells Xanthe not to think like that, she needs to be strong. Xanthe can't believe she didn't see it sooner.
SHEILA: I'll tell you what. I've got a good mind to march into Finn's hospital room and unplug every machine that's keeping him alive!
XANTHE: This is supposed to be over. It just keeps getting worse.
The Waterhole/Robinson's Motel
Sonya is collecting dinner from the Waterhole while she's on the phone to Steph. She asks Steph if she'll be home when she said. Steph is at the motel, standing near Leo's friends' room. Steph says she might be held up for a bit and asks Sonya to keep her food warm. She tells Sonya that Paul is away to try to convince someone at the council to give the Backpackers the all clear. Sonya feels guilty that Leo is going to be losing so much money, but Steph says this isn't on her. The damage from the accident was fixed ages ago, this is the council's fault. Steph says she won't be long. Sonya looks across the bar and sees various bottles of alcohol and looks tempted. She collects her takeaway and leaves.
Steph knocks on Leo's mate's door, saying its housekeeping. After no response she opens the door to an empty room, with a big bag stuffed full of money on the bed.
Paul and Steph walk into reception, Steph says she was right to be suss about Leo's mate. Paul asked Leo about it, but he assured Paul they have no reason to be concerned. Steph tells him about people going in and out of that room all day and about the bag on the bed.
PAUL: Steph tell me you didn't go snooping through a guest's luggage.
STEPH: He's no guest if he's not paying. And anyway I wasn't snooping, it was impossible not to see, it was stuffed full of cash.
Steph didn't look for anything else, she didn't want to know. Paul has to have faith in Leo, especially now they're starting to connect. Steph asks if their history means something too. Paul says he'll call Leo and sort this out.
Sonya leaves a message on Steph's phone, her dinners in the oven when she's ready. During a musical montage, Sonya sets the table, picks up Nell's toys, sits down on a sofa trying to breathe calmly, stands up, gets frustrated and leaves the house, bringing a box back inside. She looks inside the box, then opens up a drawer which contains a corkscrew. She contemplates what she's about to do.
Leo asks if his friend has done something wrong. Steph says this whole situation is wrong. She and Leo argue about this. Paul tells them that he wants them both to have room to make their own decisions, but Steph is in charge of the day to day running of the motel. He tells Leo he's too comfortable being a lone wolf but he's part of a pack now and he should start acting like it. He wants the mystery guest out of here by the end of the week. Leo agrees.
Elly visits Xanthe. Xanthe knows her dad and gran are walking on egg shells around her. Elly says they just want to take care of her, and Xanthe should take care of herself. She has been with Susan going through all the evidence they have with Finn. Mark and the police will have time to get more if it goes to trial and they'll get Toadie on the case too.
ELLY: Finn won't be able to deny what he's done to us and eventually we will beat him.
Xanthe thinks Finn will get in her head again, he's so much smarter than she is. She says Finn used her like a puppet. Elly says he has done the same thing with her, but this time they will be a team.
XANTHE: If they ask me to get up on that stand and explain what happened, Finn will change it somehow. He'll make me look bad and him look like the victim. I can't get up in front of everyone and relive what happened, I can't.
Elly says they'll figure out another way. Xanthe thinks she shouldn't have gone back to Finn after he collapsed, she should have just left him there. Elly promises Finn won't go free, she'll make sure he pays for what he's done, whatever it takes.
Elly marches towards Finn's room and goes inside.
Steph arrives home and finds different paint marks on the wall, with Sonya sitting on the floor against the sofa. Steph asks what has happened here. Sonya says she was alone for a couple of hours and couldn't stop thinking about Caitlin and all the things that she stuffed up. She was staring at the walls and it felt they were closing in on her, so she wanted to drink. She remembered she needed something to focus on, so she brought in some paint from the back yard and got busy.
STEPH: Just promise me one thing yeah. You'll never become an interior decorator, this is a mess!
SONYA: I know it's a mess. We're not going to be able to invite anyone over again.
STEPH: I suppose we could always say Nelly did it.
SONYA: No one would believe you, have you seen how good she is at colouring in, she's better than I am.
STEPH: I'm proud of you.
SONYA: For ruining the house?
STEPH: For not letting your addiction win. And hey, you've found something productive to do instead, Son, this is a huge victory.
SONYA: Yeah. I'm still going to have to fix the house though.
STEPH: Yeah, we'll do it together.
SONYA: I was hoping you'd say that.
Elly leaves Finn's room and walks away quickly. Finn is in his room, gasping for breath while the machine alarm is sounding and a warning light flashes. Karl races in and reconnects Finn's respiration tube. A nurse picks up a pillow from the floor. Finn says Elly was here, she was crazy. He says he wanted to fight but he couldn't breathe, she used the pillow and held it over his face. She tried to smother him. She wanted him dead. Meanwhile Elly walks along the corridor in slow motion.
- Mark asks Sheila, Gary and Xanthe if all of them were at home last night. Gary looks shifty.
- Elly is surprised when Mark asks her down to the station for questioning.
- Xanthe tells Elly she has her back.
- Elly begs Mark not to give up on her.
