Erinsborough Police Station
Sonya is with Ellen in the interview room.
ELLEN: Are you sure about this? Your memory is still patchy.
SONYA: Everything is coming back to me.
Mark interrupts, and Ellen suggests they take a break, before going outside to speak to Mark. She's furious as Mark said Sonya was innocent, and they've just burned the key incriminating evidence.
ELLEN: If that comes out, we'll be sacked!
MARK: (...) Do we need to charge her immediately?
ELLEN: Well, I should.
MARK: She's not a flight risk. Maybe we could buy some time. Use it to find some other corroborating evidence.
ELLEN: I suppose.
MARK: I want to get her home. I need to prepare her for the fallout. This is gonna turn her life upside-down.
ELLEN: Alright. Send her home. But you're staying here, until we figure out a plan.
In the interview room, Sonya is looking beside herself.
Harold's Café
Xanthe is showing off her birthday cake to Finn - who reveals he's got her a present. It's a very expensive-looking necklace.
FINN: Just maybe don't wear it where other kids will see it. I don't want them thinking I've got a favourite!
Xanthe smiles.

Sheila and Brooke are laying out party food on the table for Xanthe's birthday bash. Sheila remarks that Brooke seems very happy, and wonders if it's because Gary has given up on Terese.
BROOKE: Oh, Sheila! I'd hardly take joy in somebody else's misery!
Sheila raises her eyebrows.
In the living room, Ben, Amy and Elly are chatting to Xanthe. Ben has bought Xanthe a necklace too (which Xanthe doesn't seem that thrilled with), but when he goes to help her put it on, realises that she's already wearing another one. He notices that it's new, and she says she bought it for herself, using all her savings.
XANTHE: Oh, but I love yours too. I'll wear yours instead.
Ben looks not entirely convinced. Gary arrives, with presents for Xanthe - and Terese!
TERESE: Hi, everyone!

Brooke's smile fades fast.

Sonya is looking nervous in the kitchen. Mark comes in - he's on the phone to Steph, and tells her to stay at the motel for now as there's nothing she can do.
SONYA: Did she know about the shoes too?
MARK: ... Yeah.
SONYA: What were you guys thinking, covering something up like that?
MARK: We care about you! We didn't think you'd be responsible.
SONYA: But I am!
MARK: Son...
SONYA: No, don't - I don't deserve your sympathy, and I don't deserve anybody else's.
MARK: Yes, you do. You were going through a rough time.
SONYA: No! I drank myself into oblivion; I got behind the wheel of a car; I reversed into the backpackers', and I hurt two innocent people! And then I just walked away like nothing had happened!
MARK: And you'd also lost your husband. And a baby. You were in a profound state of grief.
SONYA: No, I'm sorry - that's no excuse! You know, I've been telling Jarrod, 'I'm in control. You can trust me.' But he can't! I'm a danger to everybody!
MARK: You need help.
SONYA: Help? No. Actually, I need to be punished for what I've done. I'm just gonna lose everything, Mark.
MARK: Son, we need to think very carefully about how we handle things moving forward.
SONYA: Well, I'm gonna be charged, yeah?
MARK: Yes, but we still need some supporting evidence. And that means we still have a bit of time before this becomes public. A day at best. And I really think you need to tell Toadie, before he finds out some other way. Okay?
Sonya nods.

Piper arrives for Xanthe's party, still on crutches and excited to be out of the house for a change. Brooke wonders aloud to Sheila what Terese is doing here. At that moment, Gary clinks his beer bottle to get everyone's attention.
GARY: I just want to thank you all for coming here today to help celebrate Xanthe's birthday. Xanthe's an amazing person, but you all met her fully-formed and already amazing. What's special for her mum (...) Brooke and I - what's special for us - is that we met her when she was only this big. And we've watched her grow into the most wonderful, caring and funny -
Xanthe interrupts suddenly as she notices what's on Terese's finger.
XANTHE: Oh, my god, Terese! Is that Great Aunt Ethel's ring?!
TERESE: Err... err... yes. Yes it is.
GARY: Okay, well I might as well make the next announcement! We're engaged!
Shocked faces all round!

Mark, Sonya and Nell have come round to see Toadie. Sonya asks Mark to look after Nell for a while, so they head off to get an ice-cream while she and Toadie talk.
SONYA: You know I've been struggling, yeah?
TOADIE: Yeah. And you've assured me that everything's under control.
SONYA: I've been lying to you. And I've been lying to myself. I've been drinking - and I've been gambling. And after one particular night, I did something that was really, really reckless.
She starts to cry.
TOADIE: Okay, listen. Whatever it is, I'm sure we'll be able to get through it.
SONYA: I just don't know if we will. The backpackers' accident. I'm the one that's responsible for it, Jarrod.
Toadie is shocked.

In the garden, Terese seeks assurances from Piper that she's happy for her. Piper insists she is.
PIPER: I survived Dad hooking up with Lauren. And if Gary makes you happy, then -
TERESE: Yeah, he does.
PIPER: Well, then, I'm on board.

Sonya explains to Toadie how she lost her memory, and has only just remembered their phone call, and what happened at the backpackers'.
SONYA: I knew my drinking was a problem, and that there was time I couldn't account for. But I just never thought that I'd be capable of something like that.
TOADIE: Well, you came forward as soon as you realised. So that's worth something, right?
SONYA: Yeah, but it never should have happened in the first place! I mean, I think you're right, Jarrod. Nell's just better off with you.
TOADIE: Sonya, don't -
SONYA: If it wasn't enough to think I've hurt Piper and David - to think that I could black out and I could actually hurt my own child.
TOADIE: Hey, you didn't!
SONYA: Yeah, I know. But it's just - it's really like Callum all over again. And I never thought that I'd be back in this place, but look. Here I am.
TOADIE: You need help, okay? And we'll get it for you.
SONYA: But I'm gonna go to jail! Surely I'm gonna go to jail.
TOADIE: Not necessarily, no. There are extenuating circumstances, and a good lawyer can argue that. Luckily, you have one.
SONYA: ... Why would you do that for me? Why aren't you judging me?
TOADIE: Because I love you. I've never stopped loving you. And no matter what happens between us, whether we're together or not, nothing is ever gonna change that. I love you.
Mark and Nell return, interrupting them. Sonya wipes away her tears. Toadie wonders when Mark found out about Sonya's involvement in the crash, but says now's probably not the time to discuss it. Mark agrees sheepishly, saying he has to get back to work. Sonya tells Nell she needs to stay with Toadie for now, kissing her goodbye. As Mark and Sonya leave...
MARK: You didn't tell him about the shoes, did you?
SONYA: I'll confess my secrets. It's up to you what you do with yours.
Erinsborough Police Station
Mark is back at work. He gets a phone call from Tyler, but cancels it, and goes to talk to Ellen. She's found some corroborating evidence to back up Sonya's recollection of events.
Security footage shows Sonya getting into a cab at 6.30am on the morning in question - and if the cab company's records, which Ellen's awaiting news on, confirm that Sonya was dropped off near the backpackers', then combined with the phone call to Toadie they should have all they need, without the shoes needing to come into it.
ELLEN: Unless Sonya speaks up.
MARK: She's assured me she won't. Nor will Steph.
ELLEN: Good.

Xanthe finds Brooke crying in the kitchen, and hugs her.
BROOKE: I've been such an idiot!
XANTHE: No, you haven't.
BROOKE: I encouraged him to propose to her, hoping it would backfire on them and it's backfired on me!
Sheila comes in and asks if everything's okay. Brooke says she had her chance with Gary last time she was in town, and blew it - she only has herself to blame. Xanthe says that Brooke still has her, and Sheila says Brooke will always be welcome in this house.
SHEILA: With or without Gary, you are part of this family.
Terese has overheard this last part, and doesn't look pleased.
Later on, when Brooke compliments Terese's ring, Terese tells her she doesn't have to pretend to be happy about it. Brooke doesn't deny it when asked if she still has feelings for Gary.
TERESE: Then why on earth would you encourage him to propose?
BROOKE: It's not important.
TERESE: Well, I think it is!
BROOKE: I thought you'd turn him down.
TERESE: Then what? You'd just sweep right in?
BROOKE: No! ... Maybe.
TERESE: You know, I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt, Brooke. But this just goes to show that you can't be trusted.
BROOKE: Terese, we can move through this. I mean, it's not important.
TERESE: How? Do I have to constantly look over my shoulder with you? And I'm sorry, but we're gonna have to think about your employment too.
But Gary comes in, interrupting, and Brooke downs her champagne as Terese and Gary get all soppy with each other. Terese tells Brooke they'll pick this up later.
Later still, Xanthe is talking to Sheila. Xanthe's considering calling Jesse, and convincing her to see Brooke. Sheila says that, even if Jesse wanted to, she's not sure Brian would let her come and visit.
XANTHE: Then we'll send Mum to her.
SHEILA: Are you sure that's what you want? I mean, you know Brooke - you know what she's like. If she goes, she may stay gone.
XANTHE: I think it's worth it. I'd do anything to see Mum smile again.
Robinson's Motel
Terese arrives to see Paul - she wants him to hear about the engagement from her first. Paul flinches as she shows him the ring.
TERESE: I love him, Paul. And I know that he'll look after me.
PAUL: I see.
Paul admits he thought Gary would hook up with Brooke, and Terese isn't surprised if Brooke gave Paul that impression.
PAUL: And what about us?
TERESE: If it were us, Paul... There'd always be a part of me, deep, deep down, waiting for you to hurt me.
Paul nods sadly.
PAUL: Congratulations. If Gary is the one that makes you happy, then... I wish you both the best of fortune.

Xanthe is with Sheila and Brooke. Xanthe reveals that she's spoken to Jesse, and explained how much Brooke loves and misses her.
BROOKE: What did she say?
XANTHE: Well, after about five minutes of being a complete drama queen, she said that if you're in Malaysia, she'd see you.
BROOKE: Wow! But don't you want me to stay here?
XANTHE: Yeah, of course we do. But I just thought it would be too hard for you here, especially with Dad making wedding plans.
Brooke admits that things aren't likely to work out at the Day Spa, and she does miss Jesse - but says she can't afford a holiday. But Sheila offers to pay for her flights.
BROOKE: Oh, Sheila, I couldn't accept that!
SHEILA: Of course you could!
BROOKE: I don't want to be in your debt.
SHEILA: You wouldn't be. It would be a gift. And don't even think about paying me back.
Gary comes in, on the phone, talking excitedly to someone about his engagement to Terese.
BROOKE: Well, if you're serious, I mean, maybe I should leave straight away.
XANTHE: I'm gonna miss you, Mama.
BROOKE: Oh, me too. I can't thank you enough.
Gary finishes his call.
GARY: What's going on?
No 30
Sonya is with Mark, Nell and Toadie. Mark says she'll need to come to the station first thing in the morning, and Toadie suggests Sonya go and read Nell a bedtime story.
Once they're gone, Toadie asks Mark how long he's known about the drinking and gambling. Mark admits he's known for a little while, but not the full extent.
TOADIE: Why didn't you tell me?
MARK: I guess we didn't want you to use it as ammunition in the custody dispute.
TOADIE: We? Are you saying that Steph knew about this too?
MARK: ...
TOADIE: You should've told me! Not so that I could use it against her - so I could have helped her!

Sheila, Xanthe, Brooke, Gary and Ben are in the living room. Brooke is about to leave for Malaysia, via 'the Goldie' to tie up some loose ends. Gary says he's stoked that she's finally getting to see Jesse. Brooke thanks Sheila again, and says an emotional farewell to Xanthe.
BROOKE: Oh, honey-bunch! You know you're the best thing that ever happened to me, don't you? And I'm gonna miss you like crazy!
XANTHE: I'll miss you too. But don't worry - I was thinking of buying tickets to Malaysia in the next school holidays.
Brooke tells Ben he'd better look after Xanthe, or she'll kill him.
BROOKE: I'm going to miss you, Gary.
GARY: You too, Brooke.
And with that, he helps her with her cases out to the taxi.
BEN: So, Malaysia! I thought you spent all your savings on that necklace?
SHEILA: Necklace? What necklace?
XANTHE: Just a present to myself. I need to go and get ready.
BEN: For what?
XANTHE: Harold's shift.
BEN: I thought that wasn't till this afternoon?
But Xanthe's already gone. Sheila and Ben look suspicious.
Erinsborough Police Station
Sonya and Toadie arrive in the interview room, where Mark and Ellen are waiting.
ELLEN: Sonya Rebecchi, you are charged with the following offences - dangerous driving resulting in serious injury, under Section 319 of the Crimes Act, two counts. Theft of a motor vehicle under Section 74 of the Crimes Act. Reckless conduct endangering life under Section 22 of the Crimes Act. Driving under the influence...
We home in on a broken-looking Sonya as Ellen's words fade out.
