No 30
Sonya emerges from the bedroom to find Toadie at his desk. The atmosphere is very tense; Sonya asks how Willow is. Toadie simply replies that it's a long story, but says he couldn't have avoided cancelling their counselling session to deal with it. He apologises nonetheless, but goes on to tell Sonya about the argument he's just had with Mark.
Sonya justifies Mark's hanging around her, saying he's their friend and reminding Toadie that she's carrying Mark's child.
TOADIE: Paul Robinson mentioned that he saw you and he looking quite cosy at The Waterhole.
SONYA: I was upset about something.
TOADIE: And you couldn't tell me?
Sonya explains about the amnio test she had this morning. She explains David suggested doing it just to be sure. Toadie's surprised that Sonya didn't tell him; she claims it was Mark who wanted to keep it quiet until they had more answers.
SONYA: She's his baby, Jarrod.
TOADIE: She?
SONYA: ... Yes, it's a little girl.
TOADIE: I should've been there for *you*.
SONYA: Yeah. I love you so much. But I find it easier to talk to Mark about the baby. You've always got Dee or Willow or something to do, and I just don't know what to do.
Toadie suggests they book another marriage counselling session. Sonya agrees, but doesn't look hugely enthusiastic. Toadie picks up the phone to make the call.
The Waterhole
Gary is hard at work scrubbing the walls, when Terese shows up, and they flirt a bit with each other, saying they missed one another last night.
TERESE: You know, I've been thinking - it's time we went public.
GARY: You sure?
TERESE: I want to do things right this time.
Gary suggests he tell Xanthe and Sheila, and that they have dinner tonight. Terese nods.
Power Street
Dustin meets Jack outside Grease Monkeys. Jack explains he's starting a new refugee centre, and wants to offer Dustin a job to help set up, design and run it, using his experience of the shelter system. Jack suggests Paige could also be a part of it, and Dustin seems pleased - but he's shocked when Jack reveals Paige is pregnant.
DUSTIN: Who's the dad?
JACK: She's not saying.
DUSTIN: ...
Jack looks suspicious at Dustin's shocked reaction.
The Waterhole
Xanthe is hanging out with Sheila at the bar. Sheila is gossiping.
SHEILA: So, one of my regulars said that he thought Angus got Elly pregnant.
XANTHE: Gran! He kissed her and that was it.
SHEILA: And another one said they're still seeing each other at the backpackers'. But I think they got them mixed up with Tyler and Piper.
Xanthe insists Angus and Elly's Instagrams were violated without consent. Sheila implies that it serves them right for posting their entire lives online.
Gary comes in, and asks if Sheila and Xanthe are free for dinner tonight.
GARY: I'm thinking of inviting a friend over. A lady friend.
Xanthe asks who she is (in Japanese!) and Gary simply replies that they'll meet her tonight. Sheila pries for more information, but all Gary will tell her is 'be nice'!
GARY: I really like this one.
Once he's gone, Sheila and Xanthe go into a frenzy.
XANTHE: Who is it?
SHEILA: I thought you knew.
XANTHE: Steph? Hashtag GameChangingPlotTwist!
SHEILA: But isn't she into the ladies at the moment?
XANTHE: Gran! You can't say 'at the moment'! It's called bisexuality.
SHEILA: Oh. What about that hussy at the day spa? She's always wanting to offer him a complimentary back wax.
XANTHE: Well, whoever it is, we need to bring our A-game, okay? Dad has never asked to bring a woman home for dinner before.
SHEILA: True. And good manners deserve to be encouraged. We'll use the special cutlery.
XANTHE (gasps): The ones we got out for Dad's parole dinner?
Sheila nods excitedly.
Robinson's Motel
Karl is having a cuppa with 'Dee' to discuss Willow's fake ID/blackmail drama. She confides that she's always been able to point to Willow as the one thing she got right, but now she's worried she's wrecked that too. She also moans that Toadie can't help so much because Sonya 'has him', adding that Sonya doesn't even appreciate him. Karl looks worried by the conversation's direction.
KARL: They are very committed to each other.
'DEE': Oh, of course... Look, do you think you could put in a good word with Elly and Susan for us? I don't think Willow and I can take much more.
KARL: ... Okay. I'll see what I can do.
'Dee' squeezes Karl's arm and thanks him! He looks awkward.
Lassiter's Complex
Paige is outside Harold's, talking to Dustin about the refugee centre job Jack has offered him. Dustin admits he's not sure it's really his thing, and Paige frustratedly accuses him of 'flaking out'. Jack appears nearby, and sees from a distance that their conversation is heated. He gets close enough to hear, but they don't see him.
PAIGE: So what, you're just gonna run away because you're scared?
DUSTIN: That's not what I said.
PAIGE: But it's true, isn't it? I mean, ask yourself - what's holding you back? I mean why can't you, for once, just take a little bit of responsibility?
Jack visibly misunderstands, jumping to the conclusion that they are talking about Paige's baby and that Dustin is therefore the father. Dustin stomps off, understandably fed up of being torn into by Paige for no good reason! He ignores Jack when he asks him what's wrong, simply walking on by. Jack looks worried.
No 30
A silent counsellor sits listening as Toadie and Sonya thrash out their marital woes. We jump between several different sections of conversation as the scene progresses.
SONYA: My relationship with Mark is and will always be one hundred percent platonic. I just - I don't even think about him in that way.
TOADIE: When we started this, Mark was in a clear, committed relationship (...) I feel responsible for what's happened with Willow. I haven't been there for her as a father.
SONYA: Well, yeah, you're making up for that now. I mean, he - we - have remortgaged the home in order to pay for her school fees.
TOADIE: You agreed to that.
SONYA: Yeah, I do want to be there for her. But I also - I want you to be there for me too (...) He was just giving me a massage! And then we felt the baby kick - that is it!
TOADIE: How would you feel if I had my hands all over... Steph?
SONYA: I trust Steph!
TOADIE: Dee, then?
SONYA: (...) I feel like when I talk to you about Mark and the baby, it upsets you, Jarrod.
TOADIE: I would rather be upset and in the loop than being lied to.
SONYA: (...) Of course I'm threatened by Dee. She's just the great love of Jarrod's life.
TOADIE: Was.
SONYA: She's gorgeous and she's funny, and everyone just adores her. And now she's living here again. And if I was in her shoes, you know - I would never stop loving you, Jarrod.
Or wanting you back.
The counsellor looks impressively unfazed by all this! Sonya's phone rings, interrupting the session - it's the obstetrician who performed the amnio. She ignores the call, but Toadie encourages her to call the doctor back, as he may have her results. Sonya goes to call him.
The Waterhole
It appears there's been a misunderstanding between Terese and Gary - when he suggested having dinner tonight, she thought he meant just the two of them, not with Sheila and Xanthe too! Terese thinks they should pace themselves and get established first - they've only been together a few days. She says they should wait 'four... maybe eight weeks' before doing family things!
Gary looks disappointed, but replies...
GARY: Anything for my ladybird - I'll let them know.
They kiss. Meanwhile, Jack is at the bar when he receives a text from Dustin, saying, 'have to give the job a miss - it's all a bit much'. Jack looks worried.
Ramsay Street
Shirtless Mark is building furniture on the front drive of No 24. Sonya approaches - she's had the amnio results back, and tells Mark that the baby is fine! They hug happily - but Andrea is lurking nearby, and we get a glimpse of her 'scheming' face as she sees Mark and Sonya together.
Mark apologises for the tension between him and Toadie at the house earlier, saying he sometimes gets tunnel vision where Sonya and the baby are concerned. But they quickly go back to celebratory mode, fussing over Sonya's baby bump. Andrea continues to watch, then makes her exit.
Rebecchi Law
'Dee' turns up to see Toadie, asking if he's heard anything from Susan about what action she intends to take as regards Willow's behaviour. Toadie hasn't. 'Dee' casually mentions that she saw Mark and Sonya together just now.
'DEE': They were... It's probably nothing.
TOADIE: What was nothing?
'DEE': It was just a bit intense. They were hugging.
TOADIE: Yes. They just had some good news about a test on the baby.
'DEE': Right.
TOADIE: So there's nothing to worry about. Sonya has explained it. I completely trust her.
'DEE': Of course... What about Mark, though?
TOADIE: Dee...
'DEE': It's just, he seems very focused on Sonya, that's all.
TOADIE: You need to stop talking. I don't mean to sound harsh, but this is none of your business.
'DEE': Yeah, I know that. I'm just concerned about you, okay? I don't know Mark, but he's vulnerable, he's single now - and he does not look at Sonya like just a friend.
TOADIE: Okay, that's enough.
'DEE': Look, I'm sorry. I've probably said too much. But do you know what - I care about you. And I would hate to see you hurt.
Harold's Café
Gary encounters Xanthe and Sheila, who've been shopping for the special dinner tonight with his new lady-friend! Gary sheepishly reveals that the 'lady-friend' got a bit overwhelmed with how fast things were moving, and he suggests they take a raincheck on the dinner for 'four weeks... eight?' Sheila replies 'if that's what she wants', implying she's not too impressed with the lady-friend!
Jack comes in to talk to Paige, explaining that Dustin turned down his job offer. Paige says she's already aware, and that maybe it's for the best. Jack admits he saw her talking to Dustin earlier, and asks why it was so tense.
PAIGE: That was me giving him some home truths. I just know that he's gonna wake up one day and realise all the things that he's missed. But by then, it's going to be too late.
Jack again looks worried as he silently misinterprets this as more evidence that Dustin is Paige's baby's father. When Paige goes to serve some customers, Jack notices a stuffed toy in the corner with a note on it, which reads - 'Sorry. All the best with the baby. Dustin.'
Predictably, now Jack is even more worried.
No 30
Toadie comes home to find Sonya resting on the couch. He explains that 'Dee' came to see him to update him on Willow - and to dob on Sonya and Mark for their hug earlier.
SONYA: You know that I went over there to tell him the news. We were relieved.
TOADIE: ... Yeah. That's what I thought.
SONYA: She could have just come over and said hello. But instead she went out of her way to tell you. Do you think maybe she's trying to cause trouble?
TOADIE: ... I think she's just worried about me.
SONYA: Seems like an awful lot of worry for someone who claims not to be interested in you.
TOADIE: ... What do you want me to say?
SONYA: I want you to tell her that your wife is worried too - that she's causing trouble. I want you to tell her that there's nothing going on between me and Mark. And that our marriage is strong. And that I love you. And that we're completely committed to each other. And if she's as wonderful as everyone says she is, then she'll understand that.
Toadie nods sheepishly.
SONYA: Good.
The Waterhole
Terese is telling Lauren about pulling out of the dinner with Sheila and Xanthe, admitting she wasn't relishing the prospect of the 'Canning coven scrutiny'. Lauren advises her to take the dinner invitation as a positive - they want her to be part of the family, and that's special. She adds that they probably feel a bit rejected that she didn't show up.
TERESE: That's not what I want. I just want to slow things down a bit.
LAUREN: Why don't you just take a leap of faith and go for it? You're gonna have to tackle that coven sooner or later. Might as well be now.
Ramsay Street
Mark is still building furniture in the drive. A funky song begins, as Gary and Terese sashay onto the street in slow motion, arm in arm, heads held high. They wave to Mark as they pass, and approach No 26, where Sheila and Xanthe are waiting.
GARY: Mum, Xanthe... This is my lady-friend.
TERESE: Girlfriend.
XANTHE: I picked it! I knew it wasn't the back-waxer!
GARY and TERESE: What?!
XANTHE: Don't worry - let's eat, I'll explain later.
SHEILA: And if you want to spend the night, there are clean sheets on the bed.
TERESE: ... Oh, erm... That's very thoughtful of you, Sheila. Thank you.
Gary and Terese walk swiftly inside!
XANTHE: Okay - the one thing I don't understand is, why is she worried about having dinner with us?
SHEILA: Oh, I think there'd be a few reasons! But let's give this a chance.
The Waterhole
Jack is at the bar, looking pensive. He's having flashbacks to seeing Dustin and Paige together earlier in the episode, and to the time he caught them kissing in Blaze Outreach last year. He looks worried.
Harold's Café
Paige sits down to do some uni work, and the baby starts to kick. Jack appears, and sits down with her - he says he wants to do something for her, to help with the baby.
JACK: I don't want to step out of line. But I know the baby's dad isn't in the picture - and they say it takes a village to raise a child. And I would love to be a part of that village for you.
Paige is made up.
PAIGE: Well, that would be lovely!
JACK: Paige, can I ask you - is Dustin the father?
PAIGE: What?! Why would you ask that?!
JACK: I'm sorry - I just - forget I asked anything, yeah?
Jack gets up and leaves, leaving Paige looking perplexed.
Robinson's Motel
Andrea is in her room, alone, with a glass of wine. She's sitting on the bed looking at photos, including one of Toadie and Dee on their wedding day, and a newspaper article entitled, 'Search halts for missing bride'.
There's a knock at the door and Toadie announces his arrival. Andrea slips the photos and press cutting under the pillow. She appears to be crying, and Toadie notices - asking if she's had a fight with Willow.
'DEE': Oh - just having one of those 'how did I get here' moments, you know? Rehashing all the bad decisions I've ever made. There's been a few. I'm sorry you walked into crazy-town here; I guess I'm just going a little bit nuts with no-one to talk to.
TOADIE: Is that why you told me about Sonya and Mark? Give you an excuse to talk to me?
'DEE': ... Oh, I just thought you should know.
TOADIE: Sonya wondered why you came to me, and why you didn't just go and talk to her.
'DEE': I barely know Sonya. I was married to you.
TOADIE: So there's no other agenda here?
'DEE': Like what?
TOADIE: Sonya thought that, maybe subconsciously, you were trying to create trouble for me and her. And given that we've acknowledged that there are some weird feelings between you and I, that would be a very dangerous thing to do. There is nothing going on between Sonya and Mark, and that's the last time I want to hear about it from you.
'DEE': You're right. I shouldn't have said a word. I dunno - maybe I was just projecting.
TOADIE: What does that mean?
'DEE': ... I know what it's like to be Mark. To share a child with someone who's not available. And the fact that they're lovely and generous and kind doesn't make it any easier. In fact it makes it kind of harder - cos you want them so much, and it hurts that you can't have them, no matter what you do.
'Dee' is getting tearful again.
TOADIE: You have got to get these feelings under control. Please.
'DEE': I can't, Toadie! I can't get them under control because I love you! I'm not gonna fight it any more, Toadie. I'm sorry, but I love you and I want you back.
Toadie looks conflicted...
