Nell is playing with a doll, but has lost the doll's shoes - so Sonya goes to the bin to see if they're in there. Sure enough, she finds Toadie's discarded letter from the fertility centre...
Here be titles.
Erinsborough Hospital
At reception, Karl fills Lauren in on Brad's condition - he's had more stomach cramps, and a burning sensation in his legs. He adds that they're now certain the tattoo wasn't to blame for Brad's condition, but that they're not sure what was. Karl says 'viral infections' like this can be caused by contact with chemicals. But Lauren can't think of any chemicals Brad has been using recently.
Lauren is clearly stressed out by the situation, and ends up snapping at Karl as he keeps asking her questions. Karl encourages Lauren to contact him if she thinks of anything that could be relevant. Once Karl's safely out of earshot, Nurse Eve Fisher speaks to Lauren.
NURSE FISHER: I'd be getting a second opinion if I was you.
David, who is sitting in the waiting area, has overheard all this, and looks concerned.
Harold's Café
Paige thanks Piper for showing up to help at the Café. Piper is annoyed to see Elly coming in, along with Susan and Angus. Piper apologises to Susan for having run out of her lesson, explaining she was upset about Brad. Susan is understanding, and suggests Elly run through the work Piper's missed with her. However, Elly says she can't, as she's going to Regan's memorial.
PIPER: I thought you hated her?
ELLY: Hate's a strong word. I didn't like the girl, but that doesn't mean I'm not sad that she died.
PIPER: Right (!) There's no part of you that's hoping Ned's gonna show up?
ELLY: I don't see how Ned would even know what's going on. And even if he did, he'd be a moron to turn up.
ANGUS: The service could be really intense. So if you need someone to go with you -
SUSAN: Oh, nice try, my friend, but you are grounded!
However, Paige comes over and says she's thinking of going to the memorial, so will see Elly there. Susan says she saw Jack at the hospital, who will be speaking at the service as Regan's family are Catholic. Paige is surprised.
No 30
Sonya and Nell are reading a picture book when Toadie comes in. He announces he's going for an after-work bike ride, but Sonya says she was going to cook some food for Lauren while Toadie looked after Nell. Toadie claims he needs to clear his head following the interview this morning and a stressful client meeting.
Sonya gets annoyed, saying Toadie should have told her about his ride earlier. Toadie's perplexed as to why she's making such a big deal about it, saying he didn't realise it was so important.
SONYA: Well, why don't you just tell me everything that's going on, and maybe I'll decide whether it's important or not, yeah?
Toadie says he'll stay and look after Nell, but Sonya tells him to go for his ride. He says he'll only be an hour.
Erinsborough Hospital
Lauren is with Brad, who's experiencing more stomach cramps. David comes in, saying he's heard about Brad's illness, and offers to cast a fresh pair of eyes over Brad's chart, explaining he's a doctor. They eagerly take him up on the offer.
In the reception area, Susan arrives to see Karl. He's just been emailed a copy of the statement he gave to the coroner's investigation into Regan's death, and is upset about it. Susan reminds him he did his best under awful circumstances; the coroner will take that into account. But Karl's worried about Nurse Fisher's claim that he smelled of alcohol afterwards.
Susan tries to reassure Karl that he hasn't hidden anything from the coroner - just because he drank the night before, doesn't mean he was drunk when he operated on Regan. But Karl is also worried about Brad's condition, which is continuing to go downhill.
SUSAN: You'll work it out. You always do.
KARL: I don't know if I can. And if I don't get to the bottom of it, Brad's got a real fight on his hands.
We cut to Brad and Lauren looking worried while David reads Brad's notes.
Harold's Café
Ben and Angus are drinking milkshakes. Angus wants to stick around, but Ben accuses him of taking advantage of Susan when he's grounded - he was only here to wait for Ben.
ANGUS: Doesn't your hand ever get sore of pulling the party handbrake?
Angus says he needs Ben's advice, and he can't ask him about it at home as Elly will be there (and there's no bedroom set).
ANGUS: I have a plan. Operation age-up. Look, I know how much she likes bad boys, so I'm gonna get a tattoo.
Ben thinks it's hilarious.
BEN: That's your plan?
ANGUS: Not the whole thing, just the first part.
BEN: Mate, you're sixteen. You're not gonna find anyone who's gonna tattoo you.
Angus explains that he heard from Piper that Ned left his tattoo kit at the Turners', so he's planning on borrowing it.
BEN: You can't tattoo yourself!
ANGUS: Have a little faith, Benny boy. Haven't you heard of online tutorials?
Funeral Parlour
Paige, Piper, Tyler, Steph and Mark have all turned out for Regan's memorial service. They see Bree and some of Regan's other biker mates at the front of the room.
PIPER: Ooh! Who knew that black leather jackets were so versatile? From clubhouse to chapel - a jacket for all occasions.
TYLER: I dare you to say that to their faces.
PIPER: I value my kneecaps, okay?
While Steph goes over to say hello to Bree, Elly arrives, and greets Mark.
ELLY: If it wasn't for you, this memorial service could've been mine.
Mark suggests Elly keep a low profile - but Bree has already spotted her, and storms over.
ELLY: I'm just here to pay my respects like everyone else.
BREE: Respect?! You didn't know her and you didn't like her, and now you've got the nerve to show up here?
Steph intervenes, telling Bree that Regan wouldn't want her to make a scene. Glaring at Elly, Bree relents and sits down. Jack shows up to perform the service, and Paige smiles at him.
Erinsborough Hospital
David tells Karl that he's been in to see Brad, and got his permission to check out his chart. Karl looks a little annoyed that David has encroached on his territory, but says that he values David's opinion. David asks if Karl's had an endocrinologist examine Brad - Karl says he has one booked in for tonight.
David suggests that Brad's heightened creatinine and BUN levels mean he should probably be on dialysis until then, to protect his kidneys. Nurse Fisher is listening in.
KARL: Yes, you're right. I should have made that call by now.
NURSE FISHER: Let's hope delaying dialysis hasn't caused irreparable damage to the patient's kidneys.
KARL: Nurse Fisher, with all due respect, this has nothing to do with you. I'd appreciate it if you'd keep your opinion to yourself.
Karl thanks David and walks off.
Funeral Parlour
Jack is speaking to the gathered mourners at Regan's service.
JACK: Regan's death was tragic and untimely. And I'm sure many of you are questioning why God would take a young woman in the prime of her life. I'd just like to share with you a scripture reading from the Book of Ecclesiastes. 'To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die. A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted.'
Erinsborough Hospital
We continue to hear Jack's speech overlaid as Karl tends to Brad in the hospital, while a concerned Lauren looks on.
JACK: 'A time to kill, and a time to heal. A time to break down, and a time to build.'
Funeral Parlour
Back in the service, Tyler puts a comforting arm around Piper. Elly looks over at Mark and Steph, who are holding hands.
JACK: 'A time to weep, and a time to laugh. A time to mourn, and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones, and a time to gather them.'
Lassiter's Complex
Toadie is looking at pictures of Nell and his son Callum on his phone, as Jack's speech continues.
JACK: 'A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.'
No 30
Sonya is reading the letter from the fertility clinic, while Nell plays on the floor.
JACK: 'A time to search, and a time to give up.'
Funeral Parlour
We're back in the service. We close in on Paige, followed by a framed photograph of Regan.
JACK: 'A time to love, and a time to hate. A time for war, and a time for peace.'
After the service, Paige finds Elly looking at a photograph of Ned. Elly places it next to Regan's photo.
ELLY: Regan loved him too.
Elly walks out, and Paige congratulates Jack on a beautiful sermon well-delivered. He invites her for a coffee, but she says that wouldn't be a good idea, and leaves.
Nearby, Piper is telling Tyler how 'weird' funerals are.
TYLER: How is someone getting up and saying a bunch of nice stuff about a person weird?
PIPER: Because their whole life is summed up in ten minutes.
TYLER: Okay, well think of it as a 'greatest hits' album.
PIPER: No, but that's my point. It's as if the B-side's never existed. But they take just as much time and effort and heart and soul to create.
TYLER: Well, note to self - make Piper's eulogy epic.
PIPER: You're gonna be there to give it?
TYLER: I could give it to you right now.
PIPER: Okay, go ahead!
TYLER: Piper Willis was a true original, who developed impressive technological skills. Which she sometimes used for evil...
PIPER: Hey!
TYLER: But, but then channelled into a successful online newspaper. Dedicated to bringing democracy and freedom of speech to all.
PIPER: Ooh, so I'm gonna start a newspaper, am I?
TYLER: Well, the grassroots venture snowballed into a worldwide conglomerate, which she later sold for $1.2 billion.
PIPER (laughing): So what did I do with all my riches?
TYLER: She amassed the largest collection of nineties memorabilia in the world, and purchased a beachside -
PIPER: Uh-uh.
TYLER: Oh yeah, sorry, scrap that. You hate the beaches. A killer mansion. Where she spent out the rest of her days reading the classics and watching 90210.
PIPER: Aww... There was no mention of who I spent my life with, though?
TYLER: ... Only her ten cats.
PIPER: Stop!
TYLER: Clementine's many offspring. You know, many guys fell prey to Piper's charm and beauty, but there was only one true love.
PIPER: Yeah? And what happened to him?
TYLER: He spent the rest of his days pining after her.
This is interrupted by a phone call from Lauren, about Brad's condition.
Erinsborough Hospital / No 32
Piper, Paige, Lauren and Karl are gathered around Brad's bedside. He's now hooked up to a dialysis machine, to take the strain off his kidneys. Piper is surprised, as she thought Brad was getting better.
We cut to the back garden of No 32, where Angus has arrived. He calls out, but no-one answers - so seeing the tattoo kit on the patio table, he takes it and opens it.
Overlaid is Karl's voice, explaining that Brad's exhibiting new symptoms. He says it could be something he's ingested or come into contact with that's causing it.
PIPER: Something like a chemical?
KARL: Yeah, perhaps. We have some theories.
We cut back to Angus, who has opened the tattoo kit box. He smiles as he finds the bottle of ink, little knowing that it's poisoned!
In the hospital, Karl assures the family they're doing everything they can for Brad, and that the endocrinologist will be with them shortly.
Back at No 32, Angus puts the tattoo kit into his backpack, and leaves with it.
Ramsay Street
Sonya is outside No 30, ready to confront Toadie when he returns from his bike ride.
SONYA: Did you clear your head? Or is there something else on your mind?
TOADIE: Okay, well clearly there's something on yours. So go on - out with it.
She shows him the letter from the fertility clinic that she found in the bin, and challenges him to explain why he said in the surrogacy meeting that he was done with having kids, when he'd already had his fertility tested behind her back. Toadie explains that he got tested before Mark and Steph changed their minds and decided to accept the surrogacy offer.
TOADIE: I just wanted to know that the option was off the table for us.
SONYA: Well, that indicates that it's not.
TOADIE: No - what it indicates is that there's the slightest of possibilities, okay? It could also mean years of failure and heartbreak.
SONYA: Yeah, but we've done that all before with Nell. If you want to do it again, we can.
TOADIE: No. No, no, no - I don't. When you were talking in the meeting as to why you didn't want to have any more kids, I realised that you were right. Yes, I should just be happy with the family I've got.
SONYA: Yes, but are you absolutely sure? I just wouldn't want you to do this because you feel like I've railroaded you into the surrogacy, or because of some noble obligation to Steph.
TOADIE: I'm sure.
He kisses her on the lips. At that moment, Mark and Steph arrive, looking happy. They've heard from Victoria Lamb - and they've been cleared to move onto the next stage of the surrogacy process. Toadie and Sonya do their best to look thrilled, but there's clearly some doubt in their eyes.
Erinsborough Hospital
In reception, David tells Karl that the endocrinologist is with Brad now. He also apologises for discussing the case in front of Nurse Fisher earlier; if he'd known she was listening, he wouldn't have. Karl says it's fine, and David admits he overheard Nurse Fisher telling Lauren to get a second opinion too.
Karl's bewildered by Nurse Fisher's antipathy towards him, as he doesn't even really know her. David says he'll keep an eye on her and let Karl know if she stirs up any more trouble. Karl says he may be able to do something for David too; a residency position at the hospital has just opened up, and Karl encourages David to apply for it. David promises to think about it.
Outside the hospital, Tyler is waiting for Piper. When she emerges, she's pleased to see him there - he's been there a while, but wanted to give the family space rather than coming up to join them. Tyler tells Piper that there are fireworks on in West Waratah tomorrow night. She doesn't comment, but says he didn't need to come all the way down here to wait for her.
TYLER: That's what friends do.
He shows her the mosquito bites he's suffered while he's been waiting, and they have a Moment™ - during which Piper goes in for a kiss. Tyler pulls away at the last second.
TYLER: Don't.
Gutted at the rejection, Piper storms off. Tyler looks upset.
No 28
Angus is showing a disapproving Ben the tattoo kit that he swiped from No 32. Ben's trying to deter Angus from getting a tattoo.
BEN: What if you get sick of looking at it?
ANGUS: Well then, I'll cover it up. Not like your face, which I'm sick of looking at.
Susan comes in, and whines at Angus for putting a red shirt in with the white washing. She puts him on dinner duty, but Angus asks if he can go and call his mum first. Susan agrees, and Angus and Ben go to their room, just as Karl comes in.
SUSAN: You look like you could use a glass of wine.
KARL: Nothing stopping me now. I've decided to take leave. Just until the whole investigation thing calms down.
SUSAN: Oh, darling.
KARL: There's been a second complaint made to the board about me. Medical incompetence. Specifically, my decision to delay giving Brad dialysis.
Karl says the identity of the complainant is confidential, but that he's sure Nurse Fisher is behind it, just like she was behind the report about Regan. He admits he feels like the victim of a witch-hunt.
SUSAN: You need to find out why this woman's got it in for you.
Harold's Café
Tyler is helping Paige close up, and talking to her about Piper. He admits he's tried just being friends, but the line keeps getting blurred and he ends up leading her on.
PAIGE: Just admit it. This is not a one-way thing. You still like her.
TYLER: I've never stopped liking her. Hooking up with you didn't help. No offence.
PAIGE: None taken.
TYLER: And every time we hang out together, those old feelings come back stronger than ever. Which kills me because we're doomed to be friends.
PAIGE: Well, the fact that you guys can't keep away from each other means that what you have is the real deal.
TYLER: It's not as simple as that. Your dad's sick, and Terese will hit the roof.
PAIGE: Okay, yes - they're gonna be mad, for sure. But you can't keep going on like this. You're both in limbo. And I know what that feels like. It sucks. I've had more than my fair share of emotional turmoil, and I do not want the same for Piper. So either you guys make this work, and get together, or you don't, and you forget about it for good. And that includes the friendship, okay? Cos she deserves better.
Tyler looks worried.
