Warrinor prison
Even though others might not want her to see Paul, Steph has done just that and he pleads that it wasn't him, he is being framed but is refusing to say by whom. "Paul, if you want me to believe that you are innocent, you're going to have to tell me the truth," she demands. "I am being honest," he exclaims.
PAUL: Look Steph, I'm being framed.
STEPH: So you keep saying, so prove it to me!
Cue titles!
Number 22
Paige tells Imogen that Amber can't manage to come to the funeral because Matilda is sick. She also takes a look at the eulogy Imogen has been writing and points out that while she's got all the good stuff in it, it fails to mention the flaws Josh had thinks he'd rather be remembered for who he really was.
IMOGEN: I don't think a funeral is the best place to bring up someone's shortcomings.
Warrinor prison
Steph doesn't believe the explanation that Paul is using especially since he deleted the CCTV footage. He explains that was in case it showed up someone else, and goes on to tell her that he hired someone to cause trouble at the COTY award. Again he says he's not told the police because that person managed to avoid being seen on CCTV, thus it makes him look even guiltier, and isn't sure if she carried out the instructions or not.
While he waits to see if he's got bail or not (an application is going in today), he wants her to track down Cecelia Saint in the hope that she says she's got nothing to do with the explosion. Steph then walks out when Paul tells her that she'll recognise the woman and explains who exactly she is/what she did. Before she goes, he makes one last plea to get her to help.
PAUL: Its not just about me, it's for the victims families as well, Terese and Josh's new baby girl... and you. I know that the hotel has taken a bit of a hit because of this. You've got to find Cecilia now
Number 30
Steph talks the situation over with Toadie, fearful that if she doesn't find Cecilia, she'll lose the hotel and Charlie/the Willises won't get justice, but isn't sure how to get the ball rolling.
Number 22
Wordlessly, Ben/Xanthe given their friend a much needed hug when she opens the door to them.
Harold's Café
Pam is still giving Ned the cold shoulder especially as he isn't wearing a suit for the funeral and thinks it's disrespectful. Brad tries to calm the situation by saying they didn't want to make the day formal. After Pam excuses herself to get some fresh air, Brad tries to get to the bottom of the tension between them and Ned simply says that there are issues from the past. Brad isn't settling for that and on seeing a look between Ned/Lauren, says they are not leaving until they spill.
(Later)
During the commercial break Ned has obviously spilled the beans and is getting it in the neck from his dad. Brad wants to know how he got involved and Ned explains it began after dropping out of school, getting involved in shoplifting and getting into fights - at that point Beth shipped him off to stay with the grandparents hoping that they'd pull him back into line. Brad wishes that he'd have known but Ned reminds him that he was busy with his own family.
Ned then adds he got involved with the gang not long after arriving in Darwin and at some point mentioned about Pam working shifts and now hates himself for what happened. Brad assumes the police were involved but discovers Doug begged Pam to keep quiet to protect him but thereafter didn't want anything to do with him.
NED: Cut me off completely, wouldn't even let Pop talk to me.
Ned explains that was the turning point, he took control of his life after that and more importantly got to apologise and say goodbye to Doug.
NED: That's something. Look, I didn't come here to upset anybody.
Their chat is interrupted when Brad gets a text from Terese saying they need to view Josh's body at midday.
NED: If you don't want me at the funeral, I won't be there.
Number 30
Amy is back in town now that Nene is getting treatment and Steph admits she is surprised to see her friend back and Amy admits she isn't sure if she will be staying. Both are unsure of the reception they'd get if going to Josh's funeral, because of their connections with Paul, but Amy plans on chancing it and lets Steph off the hook from babysitting Jimmy as he's at the chess club.
Community centre car park
When Amy mentioned Jimmy being at the chess club, Steph got a lightbulb moment and is waiting for Cecilia when she arrives to pick her son up. Naturally she doesn't want to talk to Steph but a bit of calm talking from her has Cecilia talking, beginning with that she'd nothing to do with the explosion. Steph says she knows what Paul asked her to do, to derail the COTY ceremony but Cecilia explains she didn't manage to do anything because her son had an asthma attack. "Check the records," she demands and refuses to go to the police in case its pinned on her.
STEPH: Come on, the guys facing murder charges, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. Please, just make a statement.
CECILIA: No, I'll deny everything.
STEPH: (exasperated) But Paul's innocent!
CECILIA: No, he's dangerous!
Harold's Café
Pam returns to the table and Ned apologises to his Gran for what happened/what he put her through. "I'm not making any excuses this time," he adds at her silence to his apology but her reply is that is him thinking it's what she wants to hear. Brad tries to diffuse the tension but Pam is still digging her heels in, so much so that Ned says he won't go to the funeral. Lauren interjects to say that Doug was prepared to think that Ned had changed but Pam is quick to point out that he wasn't in his right mind!
PAM: Why am I the only person who can see that?! You might be able to fool your father but I'm not so gullible.
BRAD: Can you just give him a break!
Ned decides he's heard enough and goes to leave but Brad/Lauren stop him and ask Pam that even if she can't forgive him, to at least put it away for today.
Warrinor prison
Steph is back again to see Paul and tells him that Cecilia has an alibi for the explosion and that she thinks he did it and plans on using her as a scapegoat. Paul is pleased to hear what has been said as he thinks it exonerates him thus leaving Tom as #1 suspect. He is relived to hear that Steph is now on his side.
Rossmoyne funeral home
The immediate family (minus Ned) have come to pay their final respects to Josh as he lies in an open coffin. Everyone is really struggling, especially Piper and Paige comforts her youngest sister. "I can't do this," Terese tells Brad but with Imogen taking her hand, they all go up to see Josh one last time accompanied to For you by Gavin James.
BRAD: Bye my son.
Warrinor prison
Paul wants Steph to use Robinsons as a bond for his bail and she is extremely reluctant to do so.
PAUL: Steph, I can't defend myself unless I am out of here.
STEPH: Paul, if you breech bail conditions, we will lose the motel, we will lose everything. I could go bankrupt; I could lose access to my son.
PAUL: I would never, ever do anything to put you in that position, you have my word.
STEPH: ...
PAUL: Oh come on, my family thinks I'm guilty, Terese hates me, you are the only person who knows the truth.
STEPH: ...
PAUL: Steph, if my name gets ruined, the motel goes down, that means you go down with it.
Rossmoyne funeral home
The other mourners have arrived for the funeral now and the funeral begins with Imogen delivering her eulogy... except she can't due to the emotion so Daniel steps up to say a few words instead.
DANIEL: Josh saved my life. They are words I never thought I'd say, not just because we butted heads on just about every issue ever but because I never thought I'd say them in this context. Josh and I weren't even mates, which makes what he did for me really remarkable. He chose his sisters happiness over his own life, so I'm going to hold onto that choice, I'm going to make Imogen happy, I'm going to look after her every moment I have.
Daniels words have given Imogen the encouragement to deliver her eulogy and she heads for the lectern. She begins by thinking everyone for coming today to celebrate Josh's life.
IMOGEN: I know I don't need to tell you what makes a hero, how Josh lived up to that. I keep thinking about that one time, sort of my earliest memories, we would have been about 2 years old and I woke up from a nap and Josh wasn't next to me. We did everything together, so it felt wrong being on my own, scary, but then I heard him, he was with mum and dad and they were laughing and having a great time and that's when I realised I was okay. I could be my own person because Josh would never be far away so I'm going to live for the both of us. This is who my brother was; he would do anything for friends and family. He wasn't perfect, he made a lot of mistakes but he knew how to love and be loved and that's enough for one life, its enough to be the hero.
A very emotional Imogen sits down and Brad stands up to deliver his eulogy.
BRAD: When Terese and I found out we were having twins we were terrified but the moment they were born it was like I was hit with this wave of the purist love I've um ever experienced.
Ned looks disgusted at what he's heard as Brad continues.
BRAD: It knocked me off my feet. Much too soon Josh's life has come full circle. He died on the same day as his much loved grandfather. He reminded me so much of dad - his energy, his optimism, his love of life, of family. I know Josh, he would have been an amazing father to his little girl and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that she knows just how much...just how much he loved her.
Lauren goes to stand up to go and comfort Brad but sits down when she sees Terese stand up. When she gets to the lectern, both hug each other for comfort before Terese takes over.
TERESE: I wasn't going to say anything. I didn't want to have to say goodbye for the last time, its something that no mother should have to go through. I will say something to you, the people that he loved.
At this point, another mourner joins - Paul!
AMY: What are you doing here?!
Paul explains he just got out on bail and wanted to pay his respects to Josh. "You need to go," Amy bluntly tells him.
TERESE: And his friends, Josh would want us all to stay strong for each other...
At this point Terese looks up and sees Paul at the back and with hatred in her yes, rushes towards him. When she reaches him, she grabs him by the lapels and yells at him.
TERESE: HOW DARE YOU SHOW YOUR FACE HERE! YOU TOOK MY SON; YOU DESERVE TO ROT IN PRISON.
Brad pulls Terese off Paul and he swears to her that he didn't do it.
TERESE: Get out! Get out of here!
"I'm sorry," Paul quietly mutters before turning and leaving as Brad tries to comfort Terese, with Imogen and Piper in floods of tears too.
