No. 30
Steph asks Paul what he was thinking by turning up to Josh's funeral.
STEPH: I didn't post bail for you to ruin a very difficult day for the Willises!
PAUL: I just wanted to pay my respects.
STEPH: So send flowers!
PAUL: I wanted to be there for Terese, to show that I couldn't possibly have killed her boy.
Steph tells Paul to stop making the event about him. Paul urges Steph to make sure that Mark is still on the trail for Tom Quill, as he's convinced that Tom is responsible for the explosion. Steph says she can't get involved, but Paul points out that she was only too happy to run to Mark with the blueprints she found. Steph resolves to see what she can do if Paul lies low at the motel.
Cue opening titles.
No. 22
Everyone is gathered for Josh's wake. In the kitchen, Lauren lets slip to Terese that Amy told her that Steph posted bail for Paul. Before Terese gets riled up, Brad reminds her to focus on Josh for the moment, which she doesn't take well.
NED: Maybe he came to ask for forgiveness. When you've done something horrible, that's all you've got left, right? Ask for forgiveness.
PAM: Doesn't mean they deserve it.
Brad tells Ned that he doesn't know what Paul's like.
Ramsay Street
Sarah offers to help Toadie unpack his car with food for the wake, but is overcome by a pain in her stomach. They discuss how hard the funeral must have been for the Willis family. Toadie says that he thought Sarah was only going to be sticking around for a few days, and she replies that she needs to speak to the Kennedys before she leaves, and she's running out of money. Sarah says that she understands there's a lot of history between her and the Kennedys, but she hopes they can put it behind them. Toadie begs Sarah to stay away and not cause trouble as everyone has enough to deal with after the hotel explosion.
No. 30
Mark comes over and isn't happy that his girlfriend posted bail for Paul. Steph tells Mark that she's convinced that Paul didn't cause the explosion, and reminds him that he's innocent until proven guilty. Steph argues that Paul wouldn't have told her about hiring Cecilia Saint if he was responsible, and Mark is welcome to contact her about not going through with Paul's plan, even though she'll deny everything. Steph tells Mark to concentrate on Tom Quill, but Mark reminds her that Tom may well be dead. Mark agrees to speak to Cecilia, but urges Steph to stay out of the investigation.
No. 28
Sarah drops by and Susan is less than pleased to see her. Sarah asks if she can have a talk with her and Karl, but remains cagey about the details. Susan says she's not interested anymore as Sarah has had her chance to explain, so Sarah says that she'll just speak with Karl instead.
SUSAN: Is that a threat?
SARAH: No, I just really need to explain a few things. I understand if you're too busy.
SUSAN: Yes, yes I am too busy for you Sarah. And I think if you talk to Karl, you'll find that he's too busy for you as well.
SARAH: I'm not here to cause trouble!
SUSAN: Really? Because you were overheard wishing that Karl was the father to your children.
SARAH: I wouldn't have said that, well not exactly. It's still not what you think.
SUSAN: What I think is that you need to back off. Really back off. Leave us alone Sarah.
Susan slams the door behind her.
Ramsay Street
Sarah marches down the path of no. 28 but is suddenly bent-double, and clutches her stomach in agony again.
No. 32 Backyard
Lauren drops in see if Ned is okay, and he says that he can't understand why Pam won't forgive him. Ned tells Lauren that he reckons Brad thinks he's a thug, and that's the reason he hasn't made any contact. Lauren says that now all of the secrets are out in the open, maybe everyone can move on.
LAUREN: Just give her time.
NED: How much time? I've apologised, I'm trying to move on. But I can't if she keeps holding a grudge.
Ned reckons that Brad will take Pam's side, but Lauren continues to insist that Brad loves him.
NED: Look Lauren, I appreciate you're trying to help me. But the fact is, Pam hates me, Dad's not interested, and I'm a stranger to my so-called sisters, so thanks.
No. 28
Terese lays into Steph, and tells her that she ruined Josh's funeral paying Paul's bail. Mark arrives, and Terese begins to scold him as well for granting the bail instead of locking him up. Mark reminds Terese that it was the Magistrate's decision, and Steph tries to remind her that Paul is innocent until proven guilty. Terese asks who else could be responsible, and Steph tells her that Tom Quill is still a suspect. Mark reveals that Cecilia gave a statement, and her alibi is rock solid. Steph tries to convince Terese that Paul isn't to blame, but she still won't accept what she's hearing. Mark points out that there's no evidence showing that the blueprints were planted in Paul's briefcase.
TERESE: How on earth can you be on this man's side? He tried to send you crazy!
STEPH: I'm a sucker for the truth.
TERESE: Well he did it, okay? He did it, and everyone knows that. So either you're a fool, or you're crazier than everyone thought.
No. 22
Pam is looking wistfully out of the window, and Lauren comments that her message in the condolence book was lovely. Pam tells Lauren to spare her the lecture about Ned as she doesn't know what it was like to live with him.
LAUREN: He's turned a corner and he wants to move on, but he can't whilst you're still angry at him.
PAM: But I am angry! I have a right to be.
LAUREN: Yeah, you do. You do. But your family has lost too many people, and you don't need to lose another one. And this anger you're feeling, it might not be all to do with Ned. You've just lost your husband, and that is one of the worst experiences anyone can go through.
PAM: Yeah, you're right. I have been lashing out at Ned, and I know it's unfair.
LAUREN: Grief makes us do crazy things.
PAM: Well that's just it, it's not grief. Well it is for Josh, but if I'm honest, not for Doug. What I'm feeling about Doug going is relief. Relief that I never had to look after him when his mind is completely gone. Relief that I never had to put him into a home, or deal with him forgetting who I was. And I mean I know that makes me a terrible person, well even more so for taking it out on Ned.
LAUREN: It doesn't make you horrible, it makes you human.
PAM: I said goodbye to Doug a long time ago. When that wretched illness started to take him away from me. And I loved him so much.
LAUREN: It's because you loved him that you didn't want him to suffer. You have to forgive yourself Pam. And you have to forgive Ned.
Robinson's Motel - Office
Terese storms in and demands to know why Paul turned up at Josh's funeral. Paul tries to explain that he wanted to pay his respects, but Terese won't have a bar of it and says she'll never believe that he's innocent.
PAUL: Terese, I love you.
TERESE: You don't love me. You're only saying that out of guilt, because of what you've done.
PAUL: No, no that's not true at all.
TERESE: I feel sick, I feel sick that you've made me care about you. You've tricked me into feeling something. Look at the way you treat people! Look at what you did to Naomi, what you did to your family, your kids don't even want to know about you! You can't maintain relationships because you're a disgusting narcissist, who puts power and money, and all this ambition in front of the people, the women that you claim to love! You damage everyone that gets close to you, including me, and I hate you!
Terese storms out and leaves Paul looking utterly broken.
No. 22
Lauren checks up on Brad, who thanks her for talking to Ned. Brad said there's no point in telling Ned about Beth and making him resent her. Lauren goes to answer a knock at the door, and Pam tells Brad that she's exhausted. Ned arrives and Lauren tells him to hear Pam out.
PAM: I owe you an apology. I haven't been dealing very well with Doug passing away. I didn't like what I was feeling so I took it out on you, I'm sorry. And I'm hoping that today, instead of being about sadness and saying goodbye, it can also be about new beginnings. If you'll forgive me.
Ned says that of course he can, and he'll try to live a life that both Pam and Doug will be proud of. Brad says that everyone is proud of him, and Ned puts on a forced smile.
Robinson's Motel - Office
Paul paces up and down lamenting to Steph that he has nothing else and he may as well go to jail for the treatment of his friends and family. Steph cracks and bluntly tells Paul to stop feeling sorry for himself and do something about it. She promises that she still believes in his innocence and they'll fight to prove it together.
The Waterhole
Karl confronts Sarah and tells her to stop playing games with him and Susan, and just be upfront about what she wants to say. Sarah apologies and says that it isn't easy, but Karl demands that either she tells him the truth or leaves them alone.
Harold's
Pam tells Ned her plans for Doug's memorial, and that she's decided to scatter his ashes at East Point. Ned apologises again for putting her and Doug through so much, and she says that they're on good terms now. She says that she still worries about Ned's resentment towards Brad.
NED: I just can't help wondering, if he'd have been there, would my life have been different? What kind of guy would I be? What might I have achieved?
No. 22
Intercut with Ned and Pam's conversation, we see Brad, Terese and Lauren tidying up the dishes from after the wake. Terese begins to write in the book of condolences, and Brad gives her a hug.
Harold's
Ned says he wants to forget the past and get on with his life.
PAM: I know it must be hard. No child wants to grow up without a father, and I should have been more understanding of how much that would have affected you.
NED: Well I was angry about it for a long time, and you copped a lot of that anger. But as I said, I'm moving on. Forgive and forget, it's the only way.
Ned says that he hopes the trip to Darwin will bring them together as a family. As he tells Pam that all is forgiven and forgotten with Brad, he clenches his fist tightly.
The Waterhole
Karl continues to struggle in getting answers out of Sarah who is now getting tearful. She tells him that she's realised that Karl and Susan aren't as stable as she thought they were, and that's affecting what she has to say. She places a hand on Karl's leg and asks what he'd say if she propositioned him on the spot. Karl looks horrified!
