Steph cautiously retrieves Paul's prosthetic leg and gives it back, although it's been filled with snacks! Steph promises to fix everything, but Paul says it's too late as the council delegation are due to inspect the motel as a venue for the Citizen of the Year Award, but they'll have to postpone it.
PAUL: Honestly Steph, I thought you came into this business because of your son.
STEPH: I did!
PAUL: Really? And this is how you prioritise? God, it's no wonder you lost him in the first place.
STEPH: Hey! That is a really crappy thing to say. You wouldn't have your business if it weren't for my investment.
PAUL: And because of your little impromptu gathering, we may also lose it! I knew you were a loose cannon, but these surprises just keep on coming.
Steph says she's walking away from it and storms out.
Cue opening titles.
Harold's Café
Brad and Lou are looking at options for Doug's care home but it's slim pickings. Josh suggests they have a rethink, but Brad insists that the decision has been made to put Doug into a home. Daniel enters with Hilary and introduces her to the Willis family. She notices the care home on Brad's laptop and says she thought the place was awful, however she highly recommends the care unit in her own retirement village. Doug looks uneasy, but Brad asks Hilary for more information.
No. 28
Karl is playing guitar, and Nene drops by following her job interview. She says that it went well, but she'll still need her registration reinstated, as well as a glowing reference from Karl. Both Karl and herself are proud of her achievements in getting her life back on track. She notices the guitar, and Karl invites her to the gig that he's about to play.
The Waterhole
Susan moans to Terese about Karl's naivety around Nene. Terese says she still feels tainted from her marriage, and is a long way from seeing anyone else. She acts coy when Susan questions her about living with Paul, so she pushes Terese for details.
TERESE: We... may have kissed.
SUSAN: What?!
TERESE: It was in the middle of the heatwave! I'm putting it down to temporary insanity. Now listen, you must not tell anyone!
Susan makes it clear that it's none of her business, and leaves to do some errands. Meanwhile, Mark invites Daniel to play pool but he says he has a health and safety report to fill out with Terese. Mark mentions that he'll be back on the force by next week. Paul enters and asks Mark for Steph's whereabouts but he doesn't know. Both Daniel and Terese comment on how Paul is limping more than usual. Paul explains to Mark that he thinks Steph has dropped out of the motel to everyone's surprise, and he might have to come up with the rest of the money himself.
PAUL: You shouldn't be hearing all of this anyway, you're the competition! You're probably thinking this is hilarious, don't you?
The Waterhole - Beer Garden
Karl is performing to a very uninterested crowd, and only gets applause from Nene. He sits down with her and says he prefers to perform in a group. Nene offers to sing with him, and Karl agrees to teach her one of his songs - the timeless classic, 'Free as a River'.
No. 30
Mark drops by and says he came to see Steph. She explains that she hasn't dropped out of the motel, and clarifies that she was walking away from Paul, not her investment. Mark asks Steph for help in rebuilding something garage related for one of Tyler's customers. She agrees, on the proviso that it's done in silence!
Robinson's - Motel room
Terese and Daniel drop by and offer to help him clean up the trashed room. Paul thanks them for their help, although makes it clear that him and Daniel still aren't friends!
Harold's Café
Doug and Brad seem to be in agreement that Hilary's retirement village is the best place. Josh lists off all of the 'fun; activities that Doug will be able to do there, including button craft, water walking, and a session with Samantha the resident guinea pig.
DOUG: Are you insane? Why would I want a visit from a guinea pig? If you think I'm joining a water walking class, you must have a screw loose!
HILARY: Water walking is a great way of increasing muscular strength.
DOUG: It's also a great way of looking like a complete ding-dong!
HILARY: I do that class every week. Are you suggesting that I'm a ding-dong?
DOUG: If the cap fits, wear it.
Hilary storms out and says Doug can forget about her helping him.
No. 28
As Steph does some mechanic work for Mark, he explains that he's been doing as much as he can to keep busy. Steph offers a listening ear next time he's feeling down.
The Waterhole
Karl has moved his performance inside, and is singing 'Free as a River' with Nene. Susan enters and doesn't look too impressed. She comes to join them, and Karl and Nene shower one another with praise. Karl goes to get drinks, and Nene quickly follows him, leaving Susan looking very displeased!
Robinson's - Motel room
Daniel thanks Terese for thinking to help Paul out, as he feels that their relationship is beginning to build again. He picks up on the fact that Terese and Paul have got much closer, but she puts it down to them sharing a house. Terese eventually confesses that they kissed, but they've both agreed not to pursue their feelings for each other. Daniel agrees that it was a smart move.
DANIEL: Terese, I love you and Paul, but you're just getting out of a marriage and Paul's track record is diabolical.
TERESE: Yeah, true.
DANIEL: There'd just be a lot of baggage to sort through before you got started.
Terese looks very contemplative...
The Waterhole
Susan makes light conversation with Nene, but clearly has an ulterior motive to see what Nene is up to. She tries to find out if she's attached to anyone back home, but Nene explains that she's just broken up with someone. She says that she wouldn't rule out any casual relationships, but she wants to concentrate on Amy and Jimmy, and can do thanks to Karl's help. Susan is clearly gritting her teeth through feigned politeness, and Karl stops Nene from discussing the incident at her previous employment.
Harold's Café
The group have decided that Hilary's retirement village wouldn't be suited to Doug, but he seems to have given up interest and says he doesn't care where he goes.
JOSH: Can't you all just stop, please? Can't you see, he doesn't want to be in a home, he's miserable! Tell them Pop, tell them how much you hate this idea!
DOUG: Of course I hate it. Sitting in a sterile room, waiting for the inevitable.
BRAD: Then why did you agree to it?
DOUG: Because what I hate more is the pressure I'm putting you all under. I can't be trusted anymore. You know how stressful that is?
JOSH: Yes, but we can deal with that without you having to leave us.
DOUG: You can't put your life on hold for an old duffel like me.
LOU: Have you considered home help, a part time carer?
DOUG: It's not a solution, it's just a stop gap.
BRAD: But it gives you some time, if we find the right person you won't have to leave for a couple more months.
JOSH: That's right, and isn't that worth it?
No. 30
Steph laments how much she misses mechanical work over the menial domestic tasks of the motel. She confesses to Mark that she's losing her drive in regards to fighting for Charlie, and says she should go and see Paul. Mark tells her to make him feel guilty for a bit before she heads back. She invites Mark to stay for a drink and he accepts.
The Waterhole
Karl gets off the phone to someone, and tells Susan that he's just found Nene a job.
SUSAN: Wow, you really are her knight in shining armour.
KARL: Do you have a problem with that?
SUSAN: No, I don't have a problem with you singing with her, or spending time with her, or finding her a job. Hey, why don't you offer her a room at our place while you're at it?
KARL: Oh Susan, honestly...
SUSAN: It will save so much time when she wants to make a move on you!
Susan confesses she was fine about Nene's previous misunderstanding until she saw them singing together, and she doesn't like that Karl is encouraging Nene to keep secrets.
SUSAN: I do trust you, you know.
KARL: Oh really, well what happened?
SUSAN: I talked to Terese.
KARL: What did I tell you about talking to freshly scorned women!
Karl reassures Susan that nothing has happened since Nene found out he was married, and they make up. He reveals to Nene that Brad's offered her a job as Doug's live in carer, but she doesn't seem particularly impressed. She reluctantly accepts it.
Robinson's - Motel room
The room is finally cleaned up (aside from the dodgy light), and Paul invites Terese to have dinner with him as a thank you. Terese is hesitant as she doesn't want to ruin their friendship, and leaves Paul looking dejected.
No. 30
Mark is still hanging out with Steph, and she suggests he goes back to working at the garage. They discuss their failed weddings, and she recounts the tale of Marc Lambert falling for her sister Flick. She insists that at some point you always start laughing again, and she teases him about his drunk night and calling Susan.
STEPH: Oh no, she'd have loved it, you're a hottie!
MARK: Yeah, a broken one.
STEPH: Welcome to the club.
They start passionately kissing on the sofa.
