Erinsborough High – Corridor
Sheila greets Terese, who explains that she's decided to show her support for the campaign as she's been getting on better with Brad. Sheila praises Terese on how well she has been handling the situation, and Terese points out that they have to put aside their differences to make the children their priority. Sheila says that everyone is bunking down in the gym, and she's just patrolling the corridors.
In another corridor, Toadie tells Tyler that the lift was always out of bounds when he was at school. He wants to track down some graffiti that him and Billy Kennedy did, although Tyler is doubtful that it will have survived. As they get into the lift, Tyler jokes that he wouldn't have picked Toadie as a rebel, and that he would have always chosen work over school. Toadie asks if everything is going okay with Steph at the garage, and Tyler says that it is, for the most part.
TYLER: I just got a bit of a bad taste in my mouth about the stuff that went down with Lucas and his kid. It was a bit weird last week, when Jimmy went missing, and the fact that Kyle assumed she'd kidnapped him.
TOADIE: Yeah, a few people did.
TYLER: But you didn't?
TOADIE: No, but I can understand why others might have. When people an idea in their head about someone, it can be hard to change.
TYLER: Yeah, I can totally relate.
TOADIE: And every time something like this happens, Steph's always going to be the first one to get the blame.
The two of them exit the lift into another corridor, and Toadie asks Tyler to give him a call if Steph's behavior ever seems odd, as her recovery will take time. Paige bumps into them whilst on her patrol, and Toadie explains his mission. Tyler decides to help Paige and leaves Toadie to search by himself.
A smoke detector is beeping, and actual flames can now be seen from behind a door.
Lauren and Brad are having a passionate smooch against a wall in another corridor – Lauren says she feels like a naughty school girl. Terese turns the corner and catches both of them kissing.
TERESE: Do you really think that's appropriate?
LAUREN: We didn't think anyone was around.
TERESE: Just the entire school community. Look, I know you're both out and proud, but I'd really appreciate it if you could refrain from doing anything in public to further embarrass the kids. There's enough gossip flying around as it is.
Lauren and Brad look incredibly guilty. A fire alarm starts to sound, and a red light flashes. Lauren dismisses it as a second prank alarm, but Brad decides to check on the students just in case. Terese rejects Lauren's offer to show her the way, and once alone she crumples down in tears.
A different alarm sounds within the lift, leaving Tyler and Paige confused. As they wait, she accuses Tyler of trying to stir trouble between herself and Mark on the issue of having children. Just as Tyler defends himself, the lift dramatically shakes and the lights dim, as the lift comes to a complete stop. Paige thinks it's just another prank, but Tyler points out the sign saying not to use elevators during a fire. They both look scared, and eerie music plays.
Amber tries to waft away smoke from some burnt toast in a toaster on the desk. Susan gets off the phone to Brad, who's checking out the situation. Amber is sure that either her burnt toast or a student's prank is the cause for the smoke alarm, which they are having to shout over. Amber says that her pregnancy is making her pretty exhausted, but offers to make another round of (unburnt) toast whilst Susan takes the rest down to feed the students. As Amber holds the door open for Susan, they enter a corridor filled with smoke, with flames licking behind every exit. They race around a corner, but are confronted with more flames and quickly retreat to the classroom. They begin to cough, and Susan phones for the fire services.
SUSAN: No, no, it's not another false alarm! There's two of us trapped in a classroom on the second floor, the exits are blocked! There could be others!
Toadie has managed to find his and Billy Kennedy's childhood graffiti, and is on the phone to Billy to let him know. The fire alarm continues to sound, and Toadie explains to Billy that it's just some students mucking around. As he ends the call and turns around, he notices flames appearing through a vent in a door. He quickly reverses and finds that the door behind him is locked. As he bangs on the door, the flames grow bigger. In a panic, he takes out his phone but drops it down the flight of stairs! The flames get even bigger, and he is forced to lift himself out of his wheelchair and shuffle down the stairs.
Susan tells Amber to stay put as she blocks the gaps in the classroom door to prevent smoke. She tries to comfort Amber, but there's a bigger shock in store!
AMBER: My waters have just broken!
SUSAN: But you're only 33 weeks?
AMBER: I know!
SUSAN: It's okay, it's okay. Help's on the way!
AMBER: What if they can't find us, what if they can't get in?!
SUSAN: They will find us, that's what they do! We just have to stay put and stay calm.
AMBER: I hope you're right, I can't have the baby here!
Amber screams out in pain and Susan looks very panicked.
Erinsborough High – Exterior
Smoke is now pouring out of the school and flames are visible on the roof. An ambulance pulls up, and a paramedic runs to assist a student who is with Karl and is suffering smoke inhalation. Brad exits the building with a group of more students, and Karl asks Brad if he's seen Susan, but he hasn't. They are interrupted as Piper and Ben exit the school, with Ben clearly suffering as well. Brad asks Piper is she's seen Terese, but she hasn't either. He puts Piper in charge of marking off students as they exit and decides to go and look for Terese himself, racing back into the building.
Terese jogs down a smoke- filled corridor, only to find the exit locked. Lauren finds her and they both run back, only to be confronted by a large explosion from behind the doors, and they quickly retreat together.
Paige bangs on the lift doors to no avail, and begins to press all of the elevator buttons, prompting Tyler to tell her to calm down.
Lauren and Terese huddle together as the fire rages from behind the doors.
TERESE: We're trapped!
LAUREN: I'm so sorry. We're going to be okay, we'll be okay.
Back in the lift, Paige is panicking but both her and Tyler are send flying to the ground as there is an almighty crash.
Lauren and Terese hear the crash, but are suddenly blown backwards by an enormous explosion that fills the screen.
There is another smaller jolt, and Paige deduces that the cables of the lift have snapped. Tyler suddenly calls out to Paige as he notices a trail of smoke leaking through the lift doors.
Toadie is lying amongst a pile of rubble, with flames very close to his body. He coughs and tries to pull himself free, but can't muster the strength so cries out for help.
Piper returns to Karl having spoken to the emergency services, but there's still no news on Terese or Susan. Brad returns from the building, and explains that as the school is so filled with smoke, there's sections he can't even get to, and he still hasn't found Terese or Lauren. Piper demands that he looks again, and although Karl tries to prevent him, Brad runs inside again.
Susan rubs Amber's back who is in severe labour pain, whilst the corridor outside is now ablaze. Susan rings Karl who picks up outside.
SUSAN: Karl, Amber's waters have broken, she's gone into labour!
KARL: What, she can't have a baby in there!
SUSAN: I don't think we've got much say in that!
Karl tries to coach Susan to help Amber with her contractions, but warns that the baby will have to go straight into ventilation and may not survive. Susan hangs up, and tries to reassure a very distressed Amber.
SUSAN: The fire brigade's here, Karl knows where we are, they'll be here soon.
AMBER: What if they don't find us in time! I can't have a baby here; she won't make it!
We see a corridor completely ablaze, and the camera slowly pans across the burning rubble to Terese and Lauren, who are both unconscious and trapped beneath a fallen locker.
Paige tells Tyler to stop trying to open the doors, as he's letting more smoke in. She frets that they won't get out, and asks Tyler to sit with her on the floor.
TYLER: Nobody knows we're here, what if we don't get out?
PAIGE: Don't say that! You have to stay positive.
TYLER: Paige, there's something you need to know.
TYLER: I'm in love with you. I've always been in love with you, from the very first moment I saw you. Do you have anything to say to that?
PAIGE: This isn't the place to talk about it.
TYLER: Yes it is, and this may be the only time we have!
PAIGE: Don't SAY that!
TYLER: Then tell me how you feel about me! Every time I see you, it's like someone's kicked me, right here. Every time, it gets harder, because that feeling gets stronger. And there's nothing I can do about it. Because you're with my brother.
TYLER: Well if you weren't with him…
PAIGE: I don't want to think about it.
TYLER: Paige, I need to know.
PAIGE: We're friends! And half the time you drive me crazy, and the other half of the time, you're on my wavelength, like no one else. So yes, I feel something. I don't know what it is, but it's something.
Toadie continues to cough and shouts out for help again. Further down the corridor, Sheila is running from the fire but stops as she hears Toadie's cries. She pauses for a moment and retreats, trying to make out who it is, but is overcome by the smoke and runs back towards the exit.
PAIGE: I'm with your brother, and I love him. And I would never do anything to hurt him.
TYLER: Yeah, yeah alright.
PAIGE: It's okay, Mark is going to come, he's going to find us.
Tyler suddenly collapses on the floor of the lift and Paige tells him to stop joking around. She tries to rouse him and screams his name but Tyler remains unresponsive.
Susan continues to coach Amber through her contractions, but she's still panicked and in a great deal of pain.
SUSAN: Hold on, Amber!
AMBER: I'm trying!
SUSAN: It won't be long.
AMBER: It's not up to me, the baby-
Amber suddenly lets out a huge shriek of pain as Susan fails to reassure her.
AMBER: I NEED TO GET TO THE HOSPITAL!
SUSAN: We have to wait! We can't go out there; we won't stand a chance!
AMBER: If we stay here she's not going to survive!
SUSAN: Just breath sweetheart, try and breath!
Brad battles his way with a fire extinguisher down the burning corridor, and manages to lift the lockers in order to free Lauren. He tries again but fails to lift them to free Terese, and promises to be back for her. As he rescues Lauren and lifts her away, Terese gains consciousness and sees Brad, weakly calling out his name. She coughs and collapses to the floor again.
