Previously on Neighbours
- Brennan lays into Rebecca for being instrumental in ending his relationship with Kate
- Rebecca tells Paul she's planning to play cupid for the pair as a result
- In increasing agony from his shoulder, Josh succumbs to Kirk's painkiller- pushing
- Matt arrests Patricia for stealing the watch from the Bric- a- Brac Shop
- Chris is furious at Sonya for not having told him about his mum's gambling addiction
Lassiter's Complex
Outside the police station, Chris is asking Toadie what will happen to his mum. Toadie says jail's highly unlikely - it'll more likely be a fine, community service or counselling. Chris is still upset that he didn't know about Patricia's gambling addiction, and wonders what he'll say to his dad. Toadie suggests he talk to his mum about it first.
Toadie goes inside to expedite matters, while Sonya tells Chris his mum will be alright.
CHRIS: How do you know? Oh, wait - you would know. You know more about my own mother than I do. You had so many chances to tell me. I just don't get it.
Lassiter's
Rebecca is in her hotel room, when Paul shows up at the door. She groans.
PAUL: Oh, lovely to see you too.
REBECCA: Sorry, Paul. I'm just on my way out.
PAUL: I see you got my flowers, then.
The camera cuts back to reveal a room full of various vases of flowers!
REBECCA: Yes. Thank you (!)
Paul wants to go out for dinner, but Rebecca is not keen. He reminds her that he became mayor for her.
REBECCA: Yeah. That was just slightly unsettling.
She insists she's only staying around to help get Kate and Brennan back together, but Paul is sceptical - suggesting that it's just an excuse to be near Paul.
REBECCA: Oh, yeah. That's right, Paul. My whole life revolves around you, I forgot.
She bluntly asks Paul to leave, not even dignifying his repeated invitations to dinner with a response. She then heads out, having checked the corridor for any signs of Paul lingering about!
Dingoes' Gym
Amber shows up, in a mood with Josh as usual. Josh, who is in one of his mildly conciliatory frames of mind, apologises for being a jerk, saying he shouldn't have taken his shoulder pain out on her. But Amber tells him it's a recurring problem - he has to stop being so moody with her.
AMBER: I never know which Josh I'm going to get. The mean one who snaps at me for no reason, or the nice one who cares about my feelings.
Josh insists that of course he cares about her feelings, and that he's been an idiot, saying Imogen's told him as much as well. He insists he'll be nice from now on, particularly as his shoulder's feeling better, and suggests they rearrange their date for later. But as he's talking, a rapid zoom effect is deployed to show Josh's eye up close, and Amber notices that his pupils have shrunk. Josh puts it down to tiredness and goes to get his bag, but Amber looks incredulous.
No 22
Josh brags to Brad and Terese about how many lifts he's been doing at the gym. Brad is worried that he was training unsupervised, but since there appear to have been no ill effects, Brad agrees to schedule in some more arm exercises for Josh's next session. Amber looks concerned.
Harold's Store
Rebecca and Kate are back from a shopping trip. Kate has to do marking, but Rebecca tries to convince her to stick around to try on a red dress that she's bought for her. Brennan comes in and Rebecca asks him what he thinks of Kate's dress.
BRENNAN: You always did look amazing in red.
Kate smiles thinly. Rebecca insists Kate come upstairs to try the dress on.
Power Road
Chris comes out of the Bric-a-Brac Shop and joins Brennan outside the garage. He explains he felt guilty about his mum stealing the watch, and has offered the owner Reg a free tune-up to compensate. Chris admits to Brennan that he didn't know his mum had a gambling problem, and complains that Sonya didn't tell him because of the strict anonymity rules of the GA meetings. Chris announces that he's going to get some answers about why his mum didn't tell him herself.
No 30
Chris turns up to see Sonya, and asks how long Patricia has been gambling, and why. Sonya's unable to answer his questions other than with vague platitudes, and says he needs to speak to his mum about it.
CHRIS: Is there something I did? Or Dad? Is it because I was avoiding her, because of Hudson? Is that why you wanted me to tell her about him?
SONYA: I can't say. But this is her story, Chris. I can't betray her confidence. But I'm actually glad this is all out in the open, because you need to start communicating with her.
Chris gets a phone call from Toadie, asking him to come to the police station - they've released Patricia. Sonya apologises for not being able to help further, but Chris simply says he has to go.
No 32
Amber is working on her geography assignment but is having trouble concentrating. She gets a friendly text from Josh, but then has a flashback to how his eyes looked at the gym, and looks up 'Eyes with small pupils?' on The Search Engine™. The search returns opiate abuse as a key cause of 'pinpoint pupils'. Amber is shocked.
Dingoes' Gym
Amber goes to see Josh, who is training again, and points out that he's not supposed to be doing it without Brad. She reveals the fruits of her research and asks Josh if he's taking pills, but he throws it back at her, reminding her of what happened with Hudson's performance-enhancing drugs and asking if she thinks he'd really cheat after that.
Amber says she could understand if he was desperate given how much swimming means to him, but Josh snaps, saying he's taken nothing but paracetamol. So much for kind, considerate Josh.
AMBER: I'm just worried about you.
JOSH: I need you to trust me, Amber.
AMBER: Okay.
JOSH: Okay.
He walks off, but Amber still looks worried.
Lassiter's
In Rebecca's room, Kate is in her red dress and the pair are sharing a bottle of bubbly. Rebecca remarks on the look Brennan gave Kate in Harold's earlier, saying it's obvious how he feels about her. Prying further, Rebecca asks what went on with Kyle, and whether Kate was in love with him.
KATE: I thought I was. But you know, looking back, I think I just wanted to love him. He certainly didn't feel the same way.
REBECCA: Mm. But you and Mark were in love, right?
KATE: Yeah. Yeah, I guess we were.
REBECCA: Okay. How do you feel about him now?
KATE: Oh, look, too much has gone on between us for us to ever get back together.
Kate diverts the topic onto Rebecca and Paul.
REBECCA: Well, I have to admit, I was flattered when he became mayor just to get me to come back here.
KATE: Is that all?
REBECCA: He did a lot of terrible things. And I can't forget that. But you and Mark are different.
Rebecca says that Kate and Brennan would still have been together if it wasn't for her, but Kate insists that's not true - and they've both moved on.
KATE: On the other hand, Paul's still madly in love with you.

Sonya is feeding Nell when Toadie comes in. He says Patricia is shaken, but that Chris is with her. Toadie's more worried about Sonya after Chris had a go at her, but Sonya says he's hurting and needs someone to blame.
SONYA: Some of what he said did stick. What if I made things worse?
Sonya worries that she could have found a better way to handle the situation between Chris and Patricia. Toadie says it's okay to have self-doubt, because from that comes self-improvement. He says that Sonya did her best, and should learn from it and move on.
Lassiter's
Rebecca creeps out of her hotel room in a bath towel, to leave her room service tray outside - but the door closes behind her, and she finds herself locked out! Paul comes around the corner and Rebecca demands he fetch her a spare key.
PAUL: I might. If you have dinner with me.
REBECCA: Don't be ridiculous!
PAUL: Well, I can always let you go down to reception dressed like that.
REBECCA: Fine! I'll go online and bag your hotel, and say you've got terrible staff. Please - come on, I'm freezing.
Paul takes pity and gives Rebecca his suit jacket to wear, before going off to fetch her a key. She seems slightly comforted, if a little awkward, to be wearing his jacket.
Shortly afterwards, Paul returns with the spare key, opening the door himself as an excuse to get close to her. Back in the room, Rebecca flings Paul's jacket back at him, and warns him to turn around while she makes herself decent behind the bathroom door.
PAUL: You know you couldn't hold eye-contact.
REBECCA: What?
PAUL: Well, just then. We were close to each other, and you looked away. That always meant that I was getting to you.
She emerges in a bathrobe.
REBECCA: You're imagining it.
PAUL: See? You just did it again. So, shall I pick you up at seven then?
REBECCA: Oh, do we have to keep doing this? I am not having dinner with you.
PAUL: We just had a moment there - I know you felt it.
REBECCA: It's not gonna happen. You need to leave.
She shows him out, but outside the door he smiles - and on the other side, Rebecca looks worried.
No 22
Terese tells Brad she's worried about Josh, and whether he'll get into the Commonwealth Games. Josh comes in with Amber, and Brad asks if he's been training unsupervised again - but he lies, saying he left his bag at the gym and had to retrieve it. Amber glares at him, shocked. Terese suggests they have a special dinner to celebrate Josh's training successes, and invites Amber to join them - but she says she's not hungry. Terese asks Josh if he's okay; he claims he's just tired.
TERESE: I hope you know how proud we are of you, no matter what. And I know it hasn't been easy lately, but you're dealing with it really well. You're a good kid, and we love you.
Amber stares at Josh, still shocked that he's lying to his parents.
Charlie's
Toadie and Sonya arrive for a drink, and see Chris drinking alone - so Toadie goes over to talk to him, asking after Patricia. Chris says she's fine; she's with a friend; and he thanks Toadie for his help earlier.
TOADIE: Yeah, now listen - I know what you're going through is really tough, but you can't take it out on Sonya. She was in a difficult situation, knowing about your mum's addiction.
CHRIS: Mate, she should have told me.
TOADIE: No. Her priority was to your mum's anonymity. She does everything that she can to help people at those meetings, and one of those things is not betraying people's trust. She agonised over what to do about your mum, and you.
CHRIS: Yeah, I know she meant well...
TOADIE: No, she did more than mean well. She tried her hardest to get you to talk. She would never do anything to hurt your family. So just drop the attitude, okay?
Back at the bar, Sonya thanks Toadie for sticking up for her, and they kiss.
No 22
Josh is trying to slobber over Amber on the sofa, but she makes an excuse to leave, saying she needs to finish her assignment. He remarks that she doesn't seem that into said slobbering; she says she's scared of being caught in the act by his family, and adds that he really needs a shower!
JOSH: Oh, gee, thank you. Everything's alright with us though, right?
AMBER: If you have a shower, it will be.
He goes upstairs to obey - and while he's thus occupied, Amber grabs Josh's gym bag and rifles through it. She soon finds the pills that Kirk sold him, and looks worried.
Shortly afterwards, Josh comes back downstairs, and Amber challenges him about the painkillers.
AMBER: You lied to me! And you're a hypocrite.
JOSH: No, no, no. Hudson took performance-enhancing drugs. I'm injured - they help me train.
Admitting where he got them, Josh insists he only takes the pills when the pain's bad, but Amber guesses that's all the time, and is angry. She says she now understands why he's been so moody, and that he needs to stop, or he could damage his body so much that he might never be able to swim again. Josh tersely promises that he'll stop, and washes the pills down the sink. He then begs Amber not to tell anyone about what she knows.
AMBER: Promise me that this is the last time.
JOSH: I promise, I promise.
Amber looks uncertain.
