Previously on Neighbours
- Mal and Jade carrying on their affair.
- Kyle wanting Lucas to stand strong after the offer to sell was made to all of them.
- Lucas turning down the offer to sell the garage.
- Paul ecstatic at hearing Lucas isn't selling and buying a drink for Dane/Rhys.
- Dane ordering doubles unknown to Rhys!
- Hung- over Rhys discovering he is late for his surgical programme interview!
Rhys quickly gets himself ready and isn't appreciated of Dane telling him to calm down and it's not the end of the world if he doesn't get in.
RHYS: It is the end of the world.
Mal ignores a call from his wife as he walks through the complex and then moment's later runs into Jade. As they chat, Karl spots them and after a second or two nonchalantly saunters over to them and the tone of their conversation changes from being very suggestive to something very irrelevant before she departs.
Karl asks if Mal has spoken to his wife – he hasn't and blames his phone being on silent for “missing” her call. He then starts quizzing Mal on when he last spoke to his wife and he is very evasive with the answers and eventually feigns an excuse to avoid having coffee with his dad.
Over brekkie, Lou and Lucas are nonchalantly chatting away about stress (brought up when talking about Michael) when they then start talking about Lou's forthcoming cruise (he's got the brochure out). “Can you get a refund?” Lucas asks – turns out Lou has put the holiday on his credit card and plans to pay it all off once he gets his cheque from the developers… but of course that won't be forthcoming because Lucas isn't selling! You can just about pick Lou's chin up from the floor after Lucas told him!
Toadie gets an early morning visitor on his doorstep as he is about to leave for work – its Lou demanding that he gets Lucas to change is mind about not selling because he needs the money.
LOU: I'm an old man, I have medical expenses.
TOADIE: And a Senior's card Lou.
Lou begs him and Toadie reveals that he's been instructed to put the offer back on the table for another 30 days. It then dawns on Lou that Lucas is being offered more money and although Toadie cannot confirm that, the look on his face more than confirms it!
Karl gets a call from Catherine on his mobile and as they chat, discovers it's been a couple of weeks since she last talked to Mal, not a couple of days like Mal had implied. He isn't happy and isn't a couple of seconds later as he is ending the call when Rhys literally runs into him. Karl can't but help notice the “fumes” coming from Rhys and strongly urges him to reschedule but determined Rhys ignores him and rushes into the hospital.
Rhys finally arrives for his interview and the other candidates give him the once- over when he sits down opposite them. Martin shows another candidate out of the room and Rhys rushes over to him and is swiftly told to cut the chit- chat its interview time. He also doesn't seem impressed at not just his lateness but at his over- confidence too.
MARTIN: Yes well confidence is all well and good… you might like to think about your appearance.
(Rhys begins to sort himself out)
MARTIN: Tuck your shirt in.
(Rhys begins to do that)
MARTIN: I went out on a limb to get you this opportunity, make sure you are worth it!
Rhys finishes making himself more presentable before following Martin moments later into the room as we head into the first commercial break.
Martin introduces Rhys to the interview panel members and immediately he starts working to try and impress them with the compliments and his commitment to the programme. “That would sound more impressive if you'd arrived on time,” Jessica can't but help get in before Martin swiftly tries to diffuse the situation and begin the interview formally.
“I want more money for the yard,” Lou demands when he creeps up again on Toadie but is told he's already agreed a deal so it's no new deal!
Lou tries a new tactic, trying to get a cut of the extra money Lucas has been offered! Lucas bluntly tells him that he isn't selling.
LOU: You're serious aren't you? You know if you don't sell I don't get my money… I'll be paying this cruise off until I'm 85.
LUCAS: Better make it the trip of a lifetime then eh!
Karl runs into Mal and he quickly ends the call to his “bank manager” (but more likely Jade) to tell him about great air fare prices to London! “I'll be home for Christmas,” Mal tells his dad but Karl is wise and suggests they sit down to have a father/son chat and they agree to have dinner at Harold's later on.
Mal takes off to see his “bank manager” and Toadie falls into step with Karl as they head towards his car. He remarks to Karl that Mal is taking a very long holiday and Karl asks how Sonya would feel if they were apart as long as Mal and Catherine have been.
TOADIE: Are you kidding me. We're struggling as it is and we live in the same house.
Rhys' interview isn't going well. He's struggling with the answers to the questions badly and Martin seems very disappointed given the high hopes he has for him. Jessica appears to be taking great delight that he is struggling very badly and eventually Martin calls and end to the interview. Rhys can sense it hasn't gone well and makes a final plea to them that he isn't feeling very well and didn't get much sleep the previous night. Jessica almost gloats to him that she can tell he had a big night and remarks that she “hopes it was worth it” as we head into the next commercial break.
Interview over and Rhys again apologises to Martin but he is already being given the cold shoulder – he isn't amused that going out on a limb for Rhys has backfired big style.
MARTIN: I don't care if you make a fool out of yourself but no- one makes a fool out of me.
The housemates are unpacking the shopping when Rhys comes home in a foul mood! He rants off and then has a go at Jade for not telling him about the change in interview time but she doesn't stand for it and points out she left him a note. The two of them have a full blown argument but she has the final word – he ruined his own career by staying out last night! Dane tries to intervene but both of them simultaneously tell him to shut up!
JADE: You've got no- one to blame but yourself so suck it up and deal with it because maybe, just maybe what this whole thing comes down to is that you're just not good enough to be a surgeon.
Jade is on the phone ranting off to Kyle and demanding that they get rid of Rhys when he gets back! Once the call ends, Dane comes through from the kitchen to apologise for not intervening like Kyle would have.
JADE: Rhys is a jerk and he was a jerk long before you moved in.
DANE: I just don't want to rock the vibe of the house you know.
JADE: There's only one person doing that around here.
Mal joins his father at a table outside of Harold's and confirms that no he hasn't talked to Catherine but he will later. Karl mentions the call he got from Catherine and that it's been 2 weeks since she last heard from him. “It's been that long has it?” Mal nonchalantly replies and tries to avoid chatting to it with his dad but Karl isn't letting it go. He concedes he should call his wife more often and blames the recent #28 phone problems for it happening but adds that they will sort it out.
KARL: She's one in a million that girl.
MAL: I know.
Karl tries again to talk to Mal about things he wishes he hadn't done when he was younger but Mal gets a text from someone and uses that as an excuse to end their meeting leaving Karl sitting extremely frustrated as we head into the final commercial break.
It's either taken Mal hours to walk to the bus stop or its got dark extremely quickly because when he meets Jade its pitch dark! They waste no time in starting the pash session but someone is watching them unseen… Karl!
