No.26
Jade is staring out of the living room window (having apparently walked off from her conversation with Kyle). Kyle comes in from the kitchen.
KYLE: Kind of not the reaction I was going for.
JADE:(desperately) Yeah, well, you got me!
KYLE: I was serious!
JADE: No you weren't, Kyle.
KYLE: Jade!
JADE: ...No!
KYLE: Right.
JADE: It's...it's the feelings rule, like you said, it's too messy.
KYLE: Yeah, no I get it. It was my rule. Just thought I'd put it out there.
There is a bit of a silence.
KYLE: So we're still good right?
JADE: Yeah!
KYLE: I didn't mean for that to wreck anything.
JADE: Yeah, of course.
KYLE: So, I'll still see you at soccer?
JADE: Er...er yeah, actually, I have to check my schedule, I've got clients.
She walks off to her bedroom, leaving Kyle looking a bit gutted.
(Later)
There is a musical montage of a distracted Jade trying to do yoga and a distracted Kyle mending the laundry room door. Neither seems particularly happy about the situation.
No.28
Mal comes in and looks sadly at a photo of Karl and Susan in happier times. Susan comes out and he gives her a leaflet about Marriage Counselling. She refuses to look at it, saying counselling won't help. Mal wants to know what's going on.
SUSAN: I've put our marriage a distant second to just about everything for too long, and it's not fair on your dad.
MAL: How is separating supposed to fix that?!
SUSAN: Because...because I can't guarantee that I won't keep doing that, not unless we work through some of these issues.
MAL: What issues?!
SUSAN: My issues, Malcolm, which quite frankly are none of your business!
Susan tells Mal that he can't help - it's just the way things are and they all have to accept it.
Pub
Lucas finally opens his offer letter. Chris and Andrew come in and asks him about getting a 1992 Skylight. Lucas tells Chris that he's been made an offer on the garage - and it's a really good one. Chris is devastated.
CHRIS: It's not about the money, I mean, you love that place!
LUCAS: I love cars, bikes, engines! I don't know if it has to be that garage.
Chris looks gutted.
LUCAS: But I haven't made a decision yet, don't worry. I'll let you know when I do.
Charlie's
Paul is reading an article about the shopping centre development on his laptop. Chris and Andrew are talking about the garage. Andrew doesn't think that Lucas will sell - he's too scared of the unknown. Chris can just get a different apprenticeship or go to Uni. Chris says he can't - he didn't submit any Uni preferences. Anyway, he likes working with Lucas as he's cool with the gay thing. Andrew says Chris will be going through the gay thing for the rest of his life.
Paul overhears and is worried to hear that Lucas might sell. He immediately rings him on his mobile and leaves him a message to call him back.
Harold's Store
Jade tells Kate that she might give soccer a miss this afternoon. Mal comes in, talking to Libby on the phone about the separation. He orders a cappuccino.
KATE: Is everything OK?
MAL: Yes. No. Mum and Dad have separated.
KATE: What?! Susan and Karl? No...no, they set the standard!
Mal says the decision's been made now and he can't change it. Life doesn't stop because things go wrong. Jade looks thoughtful and walks out.
Soccer field
Andrew, Rhys and Kyle are warming up for the game. Kyle tells them that Jade probably isn't coming, but just then, Jade arrives. Kyle goes over to welcome her.
KYLE: Look, about before, I wasn't trying to make things weird.
JADE: Kyle, you're making things pretty weird right now. I'm just...I'm just here to play soccer.
KYLE: Me too.
JADE: Cool, we're on the same side then.
The teams are picked and the game begins. Jade and Kyle are on the same side and end up scoring a goal. In the heat of the moment they hug each other but soon remember and release each other awkwardly.
Charlie's
Lucas is mulling over the offer letter when Paul comes in. He tells Lucas off for not returning his call and also for considering accepting the offer on the land. Lucas says he only needs to think about himself, but Paul says the whole community is at stake.
PAUL: Look, you may think you're this easy rider with no ties to anyone or anything. But the moment you bought that garage, you became a part of Erinsborough whether you meant to or not.
LUCAS: Never thought I'd see the day when you went up against me in business.
PAUL: I'm looking at the big picture here. You need to think of what's at stake.
LUCAS: No, what I need is for people to stop telling me what to do.
PAUL: Oh yeah, cos you have such a wonderful track record of making decisions for yourself lately, don't you?!
LUCAS:(exasperated) It's my choice.
A road
There is a musical montage of Lucas out for a ride.
Harold's Store
Andrew comes in from football and Chris rightly guesses that he's too scared to go home in a muddy state because of the cleaner(!)
Chris's dad calls him, but Chris doesn't answer. Paul comes in and asks Chris is he's heard anything about Lucas's decision yet.
Susan is sitting at a table alone reading the paper and Kate brings her over some free cake. It is a nice gesture on Kate's part, saying that Donna would always order this particular cake when she needed comfort food. Susan rather ungratefully tells Kate that she's not in a cake mood, so Kate takes the cake back. Paul sees this little episode and looks thoughtful.
Charlie's
Lucas comes in and sees Mal having a drink and looking depressed. Jade comes in and sits down on a couch with Mal. Sonya rings Jade, but Jade doesn't answer. Jade asks Mal when he's heading back home, but he says he doesn't know. Jade invites Mal to join her and a few mates out in the city later and he agrees.
No.28
A crescent moon is in the sky. Susan is cleaning maniacally when Paul comes around with a load of articles for Susan to research. He's clearly creating a distraction for her and tells her strictly that she'd better get it all done if she wants to keep her job. Susan sits down to get started. Paul says he'll see her in work at 8am sharp.
Garage
Lucas arrives back to find Chris working on a car. Lucas goes over to Grease Monkeys to get them some food, while Chris carries on working underneath a car. As he's working, Chris's father comes in and angrily calls him out. It seems Chris's TAFE application has come through and his father is not pleased. Chris says that he's just keeping his options open. But his father shouts that TAFE is not an option.
CHRIS'S FATHER: You will study hard, finish school, and then you'll get into one of those degrees. This ridiculous obsession with cars and this place, it ends now. I've stood by and let you stuff up enough of your life already. You're going to Uni and that's final.
CHRIS:(reigning in anger) No, I'm not.
CHRIS'S FATHER: You're going, even if I have to drag you into every classroom myself.
CHRIS: No.
He walks out.
In from of the garage, Chris's father starts to drag Chris off, but he resists.
CHRIS: I understand you tried to help me with my preferences, but Uni's not what I want to do!
CHRIS'S FATHER: GET IN THE CAR!
CHRIS: I should have told you about the apprenticeship, I know...
Lucas comes out of Grease Monkeys and takes in the scene, shocked.
CHRIS: Listen to me, Dad...
But Chris's father is going ballistic and is now shouting in Greek. Lucas runs across the road.
LUCAS: Hey, hey, what's going on?
CHRIS'S FATHER: This is none of your business!
LUCAS: He's my employee, so yes, it is my business.
CHRIS'S FATHER: Chris has decided to throw his future away because you have convinced him that he's not worthy of anything else!
CHRIS: Dad, just...
CHRIS'S FATHER: You stay out of this!
LUCAS: OK, just back up.
CHRIS'S FATHER: Chris was a good boy. With a future ahead of him!
LUCAS: He still is!
CHRIS'S FATHER: You've filled his head with rubbish! You've made him think that it's OK to be covered in muck for the rest of his life!
LUCAS: There's nothing wrong with what I do for a living.
CHRIS'S FATHER: You may have messed up your life, but there's no need to drag Chris down with you!
LUCAS: Chris can make his own decisions.
CHRIS'S FATHER: No he can't! He has no idea what's good for him!
CHRIS: Dad, just stop!
LUCAS: Get off my premises!
CHRIS'S FATHER: I'm not going anywhere without my son!
CHRIS: Dad, you're not listening to me!
But Chris father just shouts at Chris in Greek and cuffs his ear. In the heat of the moment, Lucas steps in to defend Chris and punches Chris's father in the nose.
CHRIS'S FATHER: You'll regret that.
