- Rebecca despondent.
Previously on Neighbours
Zeke's suggestion on how to save PirateNet.
Toadie reminding Declan that Rebecca has to cut all business ties with Paul.
Sonya unsure she wants to be with Toadie due to his lies.
Number 30
Toadie adds some new photos to Harold's Ramsay Street book from his wedding to Steph before flicking back through the pages and stopping at one particular photo - one of himself, Steph and Libby with 'best friends' written underneath it.
He then re- reads Harold's description of himself: I defy anyone to find a more honest, decent, selfless human being than young Jarrod. Although he would be embarrassed to read this, these are words that I am proud to record, and I hope that one day he finds a special young lady who appreciates just the kind of [young] man Jarrod is.
Frustrated, he pulls the page from the book and scrunches it up.
Number 30 (next day)
Steph comes through from the bedroom and makes a small reference to him spending the night on the sofa (he said he was watching movies) and finds the scrunched up page from the book. "I used to be proud of who I was Steph." He laments and she replies that he has everything to be proud of but he doesn't think so and when he mentions 6 months, Steph twigs that something has happened with Sonya. He tells her that Sonya hates what he is doing, what its doing to him and that she doesn't want to be around him.
Number 26
"No offence love but you look terrible," is what Lyn tells her daughter after putting a plate of food down in front of her. Steph admits that she can't sleep knowing that Paul knows what he does. Lyn tries to cheer her up by reminding her that Paul is only interested in himself thus has no reason to tell anyone. Steph asks her mum to play dumb if anyone asks so that the street doesn't turn against her but Lyn is aghast at that suggestion and reassures Steph that she won't abandon her.
LYN: Nobody is turning against anyone.
STEPH: (shaking her head) If Libby's going to find out, she has to find out through me.
LYN: Libby's not going to find out.
STEPH: Oh mum come on, we both know it's only a matter of time before Paul says something. I've just left Toadie devastated because Sonya can't handle what he's had to do for me. She's not going to wait for him.
LYN: (cheering up) Now that's not necessarily a bad thing!
Steph gives her a look rather than a verbal reply to that one and Lyn is immediately - she's seen that look before and knows Steph is about to do something she'll regret.
LYN: Sweetheart I know it's hard, I know you're so exhausted but please, please don't let the last 6 months be for nothing.
Lassiters carpark
Toadie approaches Diana to inform her he's out - he's had enough of the double crossing, digging for dirt and secret meetings.
TOADIE: It isn't me.
She tries to dangle the carrot of him being happy for Paul holding the secret over him for the rest of his life but he bluntly tells her that he'll cope with the fall out as he can't live with himself the way he is turning out.
DIANA: Such moral compass.
She then asks if he did get the info (he did) then adds that he can turn it all over to her and not have to worry about it any more. Toadie doesn't believe that, he knows Paul will trace it back to him. "I'll handle it," she replies and leaves the next move up to him.
Lassiters Complex
Declan watches on as Kate, Donna, Zeke and Declan are handing out fliers for their save PirateNet campaign and plugging the live 'radiothon' show. Paul saunters up to Declan and demands that he do whatever is necessary to end the campaign. He tries to do that by talking to Kate but she's busy handing fliers out and trying to stop Zeke and Donna from bickering over who is the best DJ.
"Call me crazy but this might actually work," Rebecca tells her son when she finds him and he puts on a fake smile replying "here's hoping".
Charlie's
Paul leaves another voicemail message for Toadie - he wants a legal loophole *now* to get out of the radiothon.
Zeke and Donna enter the bar, still squabbling until Rebecca points out that if they don't pitch in, there won't be a show to save! They ask her to choose which one of them is the most popular and she replies Paddy the Shock Jock but wasn't available hence being stuck with them! She enlists Declan to help them before heading off to attend to something else.
Meanwhile, Lucas has finished setting up a bank of phones and asks Ringo to check that they are working - which he does when he calls the Freephone number.
Its now Kate's turn to have a go at Zeke and Donna for their squabbling as they get up on stage which has been kitted out in gear for the broadcast. She tells them to stop fighting or people won't donate.
Number 30
Steph picks up Harold's book and tries to re- insert the page Toadie ripped out but she's drawn instead to the photos of Libby and herself especially the one from Libby's first marriage with them in their finery. After looking at another one, she calls Libby to invite her out for a coffee and they agree to meet at Harold's.
Lassiters Complex
Libby returns with their drinks and they sit and watch Donna and Kate briefly squabble (over Donna squabbling with Zeke) before they depart as quickly as they arrived having stopped squabbling. "I wouldn't be that age again for anything," Libby remarks to her friend but Steph isn't so sure.
Harold's store
Lyn approaches Toadie as he stares at his coffee to ask if he's spoken to Steph. "Not since this morning," he quickly replies and can sense something has happened. She tells him about Steph wanting to tell Libby (in case Paul does) but adds that she thinks she has talked Steph out of doing that for just now.
TOADIE: I wish we could just hide her away somewhere safe until...
LYN: There is no until is there?
Lassiters Complex
Meanwhile outside, Libby is suss when Steph refuses her offer of a cake and when she wants her friend to spill, Steph suggests a walk round the lake although that is perhaps in part to get away from Paul (Steph spotted him nearby).
LIBBY: Tell me everything.
Harold's Store
Having seen them go off, Lyn rushes back inside to tell Toadie that she thinks Steph might be away to do something stupid having watched Steph leave with Libby. Toadie panics and rushes out the store as we head into the first commercial break.
And today's trip down memory lane is back to 1987 with Henry on Charlene (and Scott's) wedding day (episode 523 in the archive if you want to read more).
Lassiters Complex
Toadie scans the area looking for Steph and eventually spots her (and Libby) sitting beside the lake. When he reaches them, he finds Steph is in tears. Libby stands up and says she wants a word with him. Thankfully, it isn't the secret - she just wants to know why he hasn't been looking after Steph, accusing him of swanning off to the store to have a leisurely coffee meanwhile leaving Steph so exhausted that she burst into tears when they began to chat.
LIBBY: Guys have no idea what its like to be pregnant. Seriously, its time to pick up the slack.
Mercifully Libby's phone begins to ring and while she's distracted by it, Steph manages to signal to him that she hasn't said anything. The caller is the school - Libby's needed there and Toadie eagerly promises to look after Steph just to get rid of her.
Finally alone, Steph explains that she couldn't tell Libby - she began crying when she tried. Toadie reassures her that things will be fine; they just need to keep their heads.
STEPH: I just want it to be over.
"So do I," he replies as he pulls her towards him to give her a reassuring hug.
Charlie's
Kate wonders why the phones aren't ringing and Ringo assures her they worked fine when he checked. Meanwhile on the stage, Zeke and Donna continue to bicker on how a radio station should operate (he keeps cutting her/the end of tracks off). Rebecca comes over to them to remind them that neither of them has said the number on air, which is why there have been no calls and also causes them to have another disagreement!
Retreating to the bar, Rebecca confesses her worries to Declan that this has to work or she'll pull the plug on it. Declan goes over to the warring duo and gives Zeke a pep talk - he's Lost Boy and this is his show and his station, which yes leads to another ding- dong with Donna!
Lassiters Complex
Lyn spots Toadie sitting outside the store and he confirms that Steph has gone home. She asks if he can keep Paul quiet and he affirms this just as he spots Diana heading towards him. He then places an order with her, so he can talk privately with Diana, but before Lyn goes inside she sincerely thanks him for all he's done for Steph.
To keep their chat covert, Diana sits at the table adjacent to Toadie's with their backs to each other. He agrees to give her everything she needs to bring Paul down. "Smart man" she replies and he adds a condition - that Paul never finds out where it came from. "I can handle this" she tells him then hears that he hasn't got everything; he needs time to pull it all together.
At the other side of the complex, Kate and Declan exit the bar and she isn't at all happy at him - she wants to know why he's not doing anything while it all seems to be falling to pieces. "I don't want her to get hurt," is his reply but she thinks that's too late! Kate then picks up that the people listening outside in the complex think that Zeke and Donna bickering is part of the show.
Back at the other side of the complex, Toadie tells Diana that she'll meet him in an hour's time at the rotunda, before they both head off in separate directions. However, despite trying to keep their chat covert, someone has spotted them talking... Paul when he came outside to ask Declan if he's seen Rebecca.
Number 30
Steph's is resting on the sofa when there is a knock on the door. She doesn't get up but the caller enters the house - its Libby. She's annoyed to find that Toadie isn't home however she did come prepared with chocolates and magazines for them!
Steph confirms that she is feeling better now although Libby is still miffed at the school for calling her into work on a Saturday. Bringing her supplies out, she asks Steph what she wants - chocolates or gossip.
Charlie's
Rebecca is unimpressed with how many pledges have been taken so far (½ a page) when Kate comes in to say that the public are loving the bickering and has an idea - she goes on- air to ask the audience to phone in and let them know who their favourite DJ is (Donna or Zeke) and to make a donation at the same time. "This isn't going to work," Declan tells his mum but she's all for it and it seems like the listeners like it too as the phones begin to ring.
(Later)
Time is up and Rebecca thanks the gathered for their hard efforts and announces who the winner is... Dr Karl following a generous donation from the hospital! Steph and Libby arrive just in time to hear the result and Libby remarks about her dad opening his wallet for it. Rebecca then thanks everyone as there has been enough money raised to keep the station alive! She hugs her son, happy that they've done it even though it's a very false smile he has on his face!
Lassiters rotunda
Toadie is sitting on the bench absentmindedly when Paul creeps up from behind him and picks up the folder he has for Diana. Walking away, with Toadie in hot pursuit, he mutters that it doesn't matter how much he's willing to pay, he's not getting it back. Toadie quickly says that it isn't what it looks like and when he tries to snatch it back from Paul, he strongly resists and with an angry look on his face, tells Toadie that he's just made the biggest mistake of his life.
TOADIE: You can't do this.
PAUL: Yes?! Watch me!
Toadie then begins to run after Paul as we head into the next commercial break.
Charlie's
Paul enters the bar with Toadie just behind him. He heads straight to Zeke and gives him a CD to queue up to play before he begins speaking to the gathered.
Meanwhile, Toadie has been caught by Libby who has a go at him for not looking after Steph but trying to ignore her wanting to chat with him, he spots Steph and tries to get her (and Libby) to leave the bar, literally taking a drink out of Libby's hand! They just about make it out of the bar while Paul is still talking but Libby's forgot her jacket and turns to go and get it. Toadie is immediately behind her trying to speed the process up but it's too late... Paul tells the gathered that there is a message from one of the biggest sponsors but of course it isn't that, instead its Steph and Dan's phonecall!
(Steph's voice is heard)
LIBBY: (bemused) Steph that's you?!
(Dan telling Steph he didn't want her contacting him)
LIBBY: (puzzled) Dan?
(Steph telling Dan she's pregnant)
LIBBY: (still puzzled) why you telling Dan you're pregnant?
The telephone conversation continues:
DAN: What did you say?
STEPH: I'm pregnant. It's yours Dan.
(Libby's jaw drops)
STEPH: You're the father.
Everyone is stunned except for Paul who has a sly grin on his face. Steph immediately apologises to her friend and all Libby can do is just stare wordlessly at her friend.
