Recap
- Callum having a bin tipped over his head at High School.
- Elle concerned that Lucas is having difficulties with managing his gambling.
- Donna telling Elle that she and Lucas need to be completely honest with each other.
- Lucas proposing to Elle and Elle bolting.
Number 30
Lucas doesn't understand why Elle ran away. Dan says that women are unpredictable and Toadie agrees but thinks he needs to talk to her and see what's going on. Lucas doesn't know if talking will make a difference and Dan thinks Elle might have a point. Maybe it's a bit rushed and they should take some time out to enjoy what they've got while it lasts because marriage is awfully stressful. Toadie says he needs to get in there and find out what's really going on because in all the Romantic Comedies that he's ever seen, there's always something going on.
Number 22
Rebecca informs Elle and Paul that Donna is rather green around the gills and Declan's no better. They put it down to all the excitement at the Deb. Rebecca is really proud of Declan for coming through for Kate. Elle casually asks if anyone mentioned anything and Rebecca is intrigued as to what happened that anyone might have mentioned.
REBECCA: Only that you have some news. So what was it? Did you get to have a dance with Jason Coleman?
Rebecca is dying for details but Elle is evasive. Lucas comes in to speak to Elle and Rebecca knew that something had happened. Lucas tells them he proposed.
LUCAS: I love you and I want to marry you. I know I've had my problems in the past but I promise you I'm fine now.
ELLE: Lucas, I sold the house back to dad. I lied. I'm not who you think I am. That's why I can't marry you.
Lucas tries to get his head around why she hid everything from him and she tries to explain that he was so happy with them being financially equal and was enjoying looking after her and she did too. Lucas has trouble believing she liked being looked after as she sold the house to get cash.
ELLE: I did love it. But I also love being independent. That's who I am and I love the freedom that comes with having my own money. I don't want to be anywhere else. I don't want to be with anyone else.
Lucas thanks her for her honesty and says that they will have to continue being honest to make it. He'd want to marry her rich poor or anywhere in between.
Later on Rebecca is over the moon to hear their news that they're engaged.
LUCAS: And we're celebrating with....flat lemonade?
Rebecca gives a quick update on Dec and Donna who are still under the weather. Elle says that judging by the number of texts Donna is getting there'll be a lot of people indulging in flat lemonade. They wonder if it was something that the kids ate as neither of them ate much. Rebecca and Elle go to tend to the patients and Lucas sees that Paul is looking a bit moody in the corner.
LUCAS: I suppose it's a bit late to ask your permission.
PAUL: It does feel like a pretty hasty decision, yeah.
Lucas says that he loves Elle like crazy. Paul thinks that if he genuinely loved her he wouldn't be holding her back from her dreams.
Number 30
Libby is also crook reports Dan and Toadie remarks that Lucas has been a while. Dan thinks that if Elle is having doubts Lucas should back off a bit.
TOADIE: Doubts don't mean you back off. Doubts mean that you try harder.
DAN: It's not always that simple Toadfish.
Lucas arrives home and pulls an "it didn't go so well face". Toadie offers a manhug.
TOADIE: Okay, okay. Too soon. Too raw. What you need to remember is that there's a lot of stuff out there for you.
LUCAS: A lot of good stuff.
TOADIE: Good stuff, yeah.
LUCAS: Yeah. You're right. Like my FIANCEE!
Elle pops her head around the corner and Toadie hugs them both while Dan hangs back. Toadie starts babbling about Jason Coleman and dancing weddings but Elle notices that Dan seems none too thrilled.
Harold's
Elle examines her engagement ring and thinks it looks beautiful and I am inclined to agree. Dan comes into the store to pick up some things for Lib and acts all distant towards his brother and Elle. Lucas goes off to finish some work at the garage and Elle goes for a word with Dan. She comments that he doesn't seem happy for them.
ELLE: You're his brother. Shouldn't you be happy that he's sorting himself out.
DAN: Mmm, if he is sorting himself out.
ELLE: What does that mean?
Dan explains that he thinks Lucas is rushing things. That he's so set on proving himself to her that he'll do anything, even if that means putting himself under so much pressure that he relapses.
ELLE: So you're saying we should not get married.
DAN: Just think about it for Lucas' sake.
Oh butt out Dan.
Number 22
Lucas drops by with wedding brochures but Elle doesn't respond with the enthusiasm he anticipated. She said she thought they'd have a long engagement but he doesn't see why nobody else in Ramsay Street does they know they want to get married so they should get a diary and set a date. Elle cautiously says that she just wants to make sure he's had the time to sort out all his stuff which Lucas doesn't take so well.
LUCAS: You wonder whether you should be marrying someone who is in recovery.
ELLE: No I didn't say that.
LUCAS: You didn't have to.
He tries to leave but she stops him and tells him she wants what is best for him.
LUCAS: If you don't trust me the best thing you could have done is just say no.
Aaand now he walks.
Number 28
Dan leaves Callum and Ben with Karl and Susan. Susan asks after Lucas and Dan reports that Elle said yes. Susan thinks that's wonderful but Dan does his "let's put a downer on everything" face. He says the boys have plenty of homework so they shouldn't be too much trouble. He leaves and Susan thinks they could do something more fun than homework liiiike.....painting! Ben is awesome out and the pair don aprons and get to work with the paint. Karl and Susan get all nostalgic remembering how Mal and Billy used to paint themselves (literally).
KARL: It's nice to have kids in the house.
SUSAN: It is. You know with this pregnancy sometimes if I close my eyes I can almost believe that I'm thirty years younger.
KARL: Oh sweetheart! You'll always be a slip of a girl to me.
They get a bit smoochy and then get back to reality. And back in reality Callum has remembered that he's not four and that painting is lame. Ben wants to know if Cal has a better idea...and he does. Next thing you know they're painting moustaches on each other. Ben has made Callum look just like Toadie and Ben looks just like Ned Flanders. They both do rather good impressions. They have also attached moustaches to all of the family photos. Karl and Susan have a good laugh until Karl notices that they've also moustached THE PORTRAIT.
Karl: Oh no. No no no. Not the portrait!
Er. Ooops.
Charlie's
Lucas and Dan play darts while Lucas vents about Elle's doubts and asks Dan for some advice. Dan says maybe she just wants some time to slow things down. He reminds Lucas that she's not in his head. He might think he has it under control but she might need time to catch up. Recovery is an ongoing process.
LUCAS: I just thought everyone knew I had a handle on it. Especially Elle. You know if it wasn't for you I wouldn't have got this far.
DAN: Yes you would've.
LUCAS: No I wouldn't.
Number 22
Paul doesn't really want to celebrate his daughter's engagement and points out to Rebecca that Elle has been very quiet since she got home and that she's changing for Lucas and that never works. Rebecca reminds him that he's changed for her. That's different though. Rebecca says that they're adults and they're just going to have to let them work things out for themselves.
Paul goes over to Elle to find out what's going on. She explains that Lucas thinks she has doubts and that she didn't until Dan put his oar in. Paul thinks that if Dan can throw her with something like that maybe she does have doubts. Elle wonders if it's a sign that she should stop listening to people who don't know what they're talking about.
ELLE: Dad you know what? I don't cook, I don't clean, I like to get things my own way and Lucas knows all that and he still loves me.
PAUL: But you see, when someone has a problem like Lucas has...
ELLE: Yeah, you love them. And you support them. And you know what I do love him. He might not be perfect but he's perfect for me. It's about time I told him that.
Charlie's
Paul wants to know what Dan knows that he doesn't. Dan doesn't want to talk about it, but when Paul threatens to go to Lucas (who is like 3 feet away) Dan relents. He admits that he's a bit worried that this coming out of the blue after all they've been through recently has disaster written all over it. Paul agrees and asks if Dan is sure he hasn't slipped back into his old ways.
Elle comes in and makes a beeline for Lucas. She has documents in hand and they are forms to create a joined bank account starting with the money from the house sale. She trusts him and doesn't want him to doubt it. He signs and Dan and Paul watch on displeased. They have a bit of a smooch. Elle and Lucas that is. Dan and Paul would be well....unexpected.
Number 22
Rebecca, Paul, Toadie, Susan and Dan toast to the happy couple...although Paul and Dan could pass for those two grumpy old Muppets. Toadie is still waffling about choreographing the whole wedding while the two grouches band together. Elle proposes a toast to Lucas.
ELLE: I want everyone here to know how lucky I am. I know I'm the girl who supposedly has everything but it wasn't until I met Lucas that... well, I didn't think anyone would love me for me. I love you and you bring out the best in me and I want to bring out the best in you. To Lucas.
Rebecca, Susan and Toadie go all smooshy and Dan and Paul look like they're in need of some flat lemonade.
Number 28
The boys are unpicking the moustache attachments from all the photos and cleaning all the frames under Karl's supervision when Susan arrives home. She has food but it's not for the boys until they do their homework.
CALLUM: But I thought you said we weren't doing any.
SUSAN: Yes, well that was before you sticky taped the portrait.
Susan reminds him that he'll have to get used to homework what with High School next year. Callum thinks High School sucks. Ben can't wait though. They get to work and Karl takes a moment to tell his wife that it was a privilege to have children with her.
SUSAN: Aww. Likewise!
Callum is having trouble with long division and I totally don't blame him. I wouldn't know where to start and I'm about twice as old! He says he knows how to do it - use a calculator. Susan thinks it would be good to understand the basics first.
CALLUM: Well maybe I'm too basic to understand the basics.
Number 22
The party is breaking up, but as Dan goes to leave Elle catches up with him. She tells him that marrying Lucas isn't going to make him have a relapse and she'd never abandon him. She can't understand why he can't be happy for his own brother. Lucas notices that not everything is right with Elle.
Number 30
Elle has evidently told Lucas about Dan's misgivings as Lucas bursts into number 30 all guns blazing and launches himself on his brother. He demands to know why he couldn't say all that to his face.
DAN: It's not what you think.
LUCAS: I'm just your messed up little brother and always will be right?
DAN: Lucas I'm trying to help you.
LUCAS: No. You're waiting for me to screw up again.
