Dr Newton suggesting to Dan that she may have to perform an emergency hysterectomy; Dan not being sure whether to agree.
Erinsborough Hospital
Dan is pacing the floor, remembering his promise to Libby that they'll try for another child. Susan reminds Dan that Libby could die - there's no choice in this matter. She pleads that Libby has to come first. Dan signs the consent form, and tells the doctors to do their best to save her without having to do the hysterectomy.
Libby is wheeled from her room to the operating theatre, Susan and Dan watching on, concerned.
Number 32
Steph is on the phone to Susan, and Bec, Declan and Toadie are standing around, waiting for news. Bec answers the door to Bridget who asks to see Declan - but she realises that something's wrong. As they explain what's happening, Callum walks in - and Toadie shushes everyone. Cal knows something's up, and so Steph asks him to get Charlie ready for bed for her.
Rebecca suggests to Toadie that he can't hide this from Callum forever, but Toadie just wants to wait for some news first...unfortunately, Callum is in the hallway and overhears their conversation...
Erisnborough Hospital
Lucas wanders in and sees Dan pacing and pouring some old coffee into a plant pot. Dr Newton comes out - she says that Libby will be okay. She needs to talk to Dan and, clearly uncomfortable, Lucas makes a run for it - he has things to do. Disappointed, Dan watches his brother leave. Dr Newton tells Dan she had to perform the hysterectomy, and Dan is gutted.
Lucas stands in a corner, listening and watching.
Cut to later where Bridget stares at Libby in her room with Dan. Declan comes in to look for his girlfriend, and when their baby starts kicking, Declan asks to feel her stomach. He thinks perhaps they have a champion full forward in there. Bridget wonders if it's perhaps a can-can dancer.
They share a moment.
Charlie's
Lucas sits alone at a table, drinking beer. Rebecca suggests that if he's worried he should go to the hospital.
LUCAS: Worried...? I'm just contemplating the difference German and Czech beers.
BEC: Oh. Gee, Dan must be going through hell.
LUCAS: Mmmm. I must give that further consideration.
Just at that point an equally emotionally crippled Elle walks in, and Lucas teases her about being all dressed up. Elle cracks a funny at him and Bec tries to intervene to explain about Lib, but Lucas and Elle continue their banter. Mark arrives to take Elle out and Lucas, still rude and sulky, invites them to have a drink with him. They decline.
ELLE: Goodnight Lucas.
LUCAS: Goodnight. Don't get tomato sauce on your dress.
Miaow.
Erinsborough Hospital
Libby wakes up from the operation with Dan by her side. She's relieved to see him and he tells her she'll be fine. She apologises again for losing the baby, and reiterates that she won't give up. Sad and guilty, Dan tells her that he had to give permission for Dr Newton to perform a hysterectomy. Libby crumbles in distress and anger, and refuses to look at Dan. She tells him to go.
Cut to later where Susan and Dan sit together in the waiting area. Susan tells Dan that her daughter needs some time, and Dan wonders what would have happened if he'd have said 'no' to the operation. Susan thinks Dan might need some sleep but he's not taking any help from anyone right now, and he finally concedes that he'll go home for a shower.
Lassiter's
Dan comes out Harold's Store with some coffee and runs into Lucas who asks after Libby.
DAN: What, now you're interested?
Lucas stumbles over an apology that he wasn't handling things too well.
DAN: Last night I gave the doctors permission to do whatever it took to save her life. And now she'll never have another child. And of course she wants nothing more to do with me, so everything's sweet, mate, thanks for asking.
Ouch.
Erinsborough Hospital
Steph is crying and hugging Lib, telling her how sorry she is. Toadie and Susan watch through the window of the room. Callum arrives with some hospital gags to cheer people up for Comic Relief. Toadie thinks that maybe now isn't a good time which, judging by the expression on Susan's face, wasn't the right thing to say to Cal.
Susan gives Callum some money to get a drink, and when he goes she suggest to Toad that maybe Cal just wants to be with his dad, at the hospital. Toadie is adamant that Callum shouldn't see the sad stuff, but Susan thinks that family should stick together through the bad times and the good.
Dan arrives back and Toadie offers his condolences before going to get Callum to spend some time with him. Dan and Susan turn back to see Lib and Steph still hugging.
Carpenter's Mechanics
Lucas is unsuccessfully repairing a car. Frustrated he comes out from underneath the car to find Elle standing there. She tells him she and Mark ran into Dan earlier, and she knows about Libby. They stand awkwardly together, and Elle asks after Dan - but Lucas is just interested in knowing how her date went.
Elle asks Lucas how he is and, confronted by her honesty, he looks sadly at her and she pulls him into her. He clings onto her before pulling away and quickly moving in for a kiss which Elle only half-resists. Watching from the car, Mark leaps out to defend his 'girlfriend'.
Elle tells Lucas that she just wanted to know how he is, before branding him pathetic and shallow, and walking off with Mark.
Lucas gulps back frustration and tears.
Charlie's
Elle is still talking about the kissing incident to Mark, who thinks that perhaps Elle is in love with Lucas - after all, she hasn't stopped talking about him.
ELLE: I've only been saying how pathetic he is! I don't love him!
MARK: I'll tell you what: if you can get through the next five minutes without saying his name, I'll believe you.
ELLE: Alright.
She lasts less than 10 seconds.
Rebecca comes over to take their order, but Mark walks off, and Elle explains how silly Mark thinks she's in love with Lucas. Rebecca gives her a look that signals her agreement. Elle continues to go on about Lucas - how he's pathetic, how he doesn't worry for Dan, how he doesn't care...
Rebecca tells Elle that Lucas really does care - it's all a front with him.
Number 26
Steve is trying to fix the pipe in the kitchen and so the water's been turned off. Didge was trying to take a shower, and she and Miranda exchange a yelled conversation about the water, before Didge comes in to see her dad there. Whilst she's clearly pleased to see him, she's less pleased to see the gunk in the sink's u-bend which clogged up their water system.
Declan comes over to see Didge and is surprised she's not ready yet. Steve wonders what they're both up to, and Bridget says she has a surprise for Declan.
Lassiter's
Cut to some time later where Declan and Bridget are walking to the lake, with a large clutch of helium balloons. Didge announces that they are going to let go of all the things that are holding them back. She's written things on each balloon.
She lets go of her mum and dad's separation, Riley, Joanna. Declan reads the others: trying to be perfect, being stubborn, possessiveness and his AFL career. Bridget announces that since seeing Libby lose her baby she realises that they're so lucky that they have each other - and their child.
DECLAN: What do you mean, like, we...?
BRIDGET: Yes. We're a family. The three of us.
Declan grabs his girlfriend for a hug, and as they watch the sky she lets go of the final balloons.
Number 26
Looking tired and a little fed up, Miranda tidies away breakfast things from the table where Steve still sits. Steve offers to fix the bedroom door, but Miranda doesn't get it: he had two years to fix it - why now?
Luckily Dec and Didge come home to break the tension. They spring into the house and Miranda wonders why the good mood. They tell her parents that they're keeping the baby! Miranda embraces them in a big hug, whilst Steve stands, looking on proudly and a bit sad that he's not involved.
Erinsborough Hospital
Cal and Toadie are reading bad Doctor Doctor jokes out to Libby. Dan comes in.
DAN: What are you trying to do - set back her recovery?
TOADIE: Oh, sorry mate, I...
DAN: Not, it's not on, Toad. These jokes are SO bad, they're life threatening.
Dan asks for some private time with Lib, so Toadie and Cal make their way out; Libby thanks them for visiting her.
Dan sits on Libby's bed and she immediately apologises for before. She knows Dan did what he had to do.
DAN: Are we okay?
LIBBY: Yeah. We're okay.
They hug, both of them still sad.
Carpenter's Mechanics
Lucas has his head under a bonnet when Elle comes over to talk to him. She takes him by surprise, and he hits his head looking up. Nervous and vulnerable, she tells him that she knows he's not pathetic or shallow , and understands that he cares, admitting he just has trouble expressing himself. Lucas barely looks at her.
ELLE: So if we're going to move forward, I think I'll have to be the one to put myself on the line.
She breathes and waits.
ELLE: I love you.
LUCAS: Sorry?
ELLE: I love you.
LUCAS: You love me?
She smiles hopefully, but her honesty is thrown back in her face when Lucas laughs. Ashamed, Elle walks away, and Lucas is left knowing he really screwed up. Big time.
