Recap
- Sam telling Dan she's pregnant
- Sam telling Elle she's not really pregnant
- Rebecca throwing away a picture of her and Paul
- Elle kicking Paul out of the house
Number 22
Elle is putting the smashed photo frame in the bin when Oliver appears looking for his family. Elle's not sure where they went but reveals that she kicked her dad out and hopes that counts for something. But Oliver's in no mood to listen to her and says he's going to stay at the hotel.
Lassiter's - Next Morning
Paul is harassing Oliver for updates on how his mum's doing but Oliver can barely stand to look at him. Through gritted teeth, Oliver says that if he could fire Paul he would, but since he can't, Paul needs to stay out of his way.
Lassiter's Complex
Ned and Kirsten are on their way to school with Mickey when Oliver hands her three weeks worth of pay - her services are no longer required at Lassiter's. Kirsten's confused until she sees Paul loitering about guiltily in the background and puts two and two together.
Cut to Kirsten sitting in stunned silence with Ned and Mickey out the front of the General Store. Lou takes Mickey away so the adults can chat, and Kirsten frets about how she's going to afford to live now she's out of a job. Ned offers to help her financially, but Kirsten reminds him he's got a mortgage to think about, not to mention the fact his brother might be facing jail. Mickey returns and can see that his mum's in trouble but Ned reassures him that everything will be OK.
Number 22
Oliver is packing up his belongings and tells Elle that he's resigning from Lassiter's. Elle tries to convince him to change his mind, and that she loves him, but Oliver informs her that it's over between them.
Number 30
Dan flashes his torso, but it's for a valid reason this time as he discovers that he's covered with chicken pox. Freaking out, he orders Sam to keep away from him so he can't harm the baby with his germs.
Lassiter's Complex
Paul finished work on his shiny new Apple Mac when he sees Elle in the distance. Walking up to her, he notices she's been crying and figures out that it's to do with Oliver. Angry, Elle says that he's chalked up another casualty - they're all paying for his stupid actions. Trying to make things better, Paul informs her that he's resigning from Lassiter's. Elle wishes that he could stay, but he's only got himself to blame.
Outside the General Store, Rebecca and Declan are searching through the local paper for rental properties but aren't having much luck.
REBECCA: We're never going to find anywhere as good as Ramsay Street.
DECLAN: Even though we were living with a rat?
REBECCA: Yes, I certainly have a knack for attracting those.
DECLAN: Must be that cheesy grin...
REBECCA: (cringing) Oh, Dec...
DECLAN: (laughing) It's probably a good thing that we left because that man was sucking the comedy right out of me.
Declan says that it's not her fault things wound up this way and Rebecca says she knows. Lou approaches and offers to ring some real estate buddies of his to help them out. Steve and Miranda also stop by to offer their sympathies and invite Rebecca and Declan to dinner.
Garage
Declan chats with Oliver while he works and admits that he doesn't blame Elle anymore, it's not her fault what happened. Dec says that he kind of liked Elle, and Oliver ruefully says he did too.
DECLAN: Who am I going to share my makeup and hair tips with now?
Both boys agree that punching Paul's lights out would feel good but know that it's not the right answer. They share a brotherly hug but break apart when things get too mushy. Kirsten brings Mickey in to see his dad after school and Declan barrels over to yell at her for betraying his mum's trust. Oliver drags him away while Mickey looks confused and asks what's going on. Ned tries to explain that it's like the time he had a fight with Ben and he had to wait for him to cool down before they could talk. Trying to make Kirsten feel better, Ned says he'll have a word to Declan about his behaviour and invites her over for dinner because she needs "family" around her. Well, this group dinner is going to go smoothly then, isn't it.
Law Firm
Rebecca is trying to study during her lunch break but keeps getting distracted by her engagement ring. Sam finds her and offers her sympathies, but Rebecca is quite harsh on herself for trying to live a "dream life" and calls herself a joke.
REBECCA: Happily ever after with a man that I met for a weekend when I was practically a kid? Who was I kidding?
But Sam reasons that she did so many cruel things to Dan and yet he gave her a second chance to have the "fantasy" life.
REBECCA: (considering this) And now you're having a baby.
SAM: (conflicted) See... Dreams happen.
Lassiter's Complex
Sam sees Elle eating alone and joins her. Elle asks if she's come clean to Dan yet about the non-pregnancy, but Sam's hoping that she'll just magically fall pregnant in the next few weeks. Although she's hit a hurdle now Dan's got the chicken pox. Elle thinks that Sam should tell the truth while she still can - she tried keeping a secret and look what happened to her family when it was uncovered. Sam contemplates this.
Number 30
Shirtless Dan is trying to slather his back in calamine lotion but can't reach the right spot. He's about to resort to help from Bob when Libby comes a knocking with some marking from school. Taking pity on the itchy one, she dabs lotion on to his bare back until she feels a bit too overwhelmed being in such close proximity to him. Dan reveals that he was about to order a cab to deliver Sam's dinner to her, but Lib offers to take it to her instead.
Charlie's Bar
Looking very haggard and pale, Paul finishes up his drink and is about to leave when he sees Rebecca. She returns his engagement ring and Paul says for her to keep it, but Rebecca doesn't want it - it means nothing to her now. In a stilted fashion, Rebecca tells Paul that she's sorry Declan had a go at him last night. Paul asks her if they can go somewhere and talk because he misses her terribly.
REBECCA: I loved you so much, Paul. How could you just throw all of that away?
(Paul's ashamed and unable to answer her)
PAUL: (giving her the ring) I want you to take this because I can't think of this as the end.
But Rebecca refuses and says she has to go and collect the last of her belongings. His face crumbling, Paul begs her to stay and says that he'll do anything but Rebecca says no and leaves. Shattered, Paul rubs tears from his face, almost surprised to realise he's crying.
Number 22
Elle's startled to find Rebecca in the main bedroom because she didn't know anyone else was home. She pleads with Rebecca not to leave and tells her that she kicked her dad out. Rebecca's surprised, but Elle says that she wants Rebecca and Declan to stay because they're family. Feeling sorry for Elle, Rebecca takes her hand and says that it's not her fault. Teary, Elle whimpers that she was just afraid she'd never see Rebecca again.
REBECCA: (gentle) I can't live here.
ELLE: (almost childlike in her reasoning) But why? This is your home, we're a family, that doesn't have to change.
Rebecca hugs her and says she knows how hard it must have been to keep the secret. Elle admits that she wanted to tell her so many times but didn't want to lose her. Rebecca replies that she may be leaving the house, but she won't leave Elle.
Law Firm
Sam is trying to type but becomes very distracted by a black scuff mark on the filing cabinet. We cut to her furiously cleaning it off, just as Libby arrives with the food. Sam barely even acknowledges Libby's presence because she's so focused on her task, and quickly explains that she likes to clean when she has a mind block at work. But Libby is quite taken aback with how intent Sam is on finishing her task.
Number 26
Elle has joined Rebecca for dinner with Steve, Miranda and Lou (Declan is off eating dinner with Oliver). Miranda asks how Declan's coping, and Rebecca is worried that he might slip into his old behaviour. Steve offers to have a word with him, but Rebecca says that she'll manage on her own.
Everyone is mortified when Ned and Mickey bring Kirsten home with them. Rebecca mutters that she'll leave but Kirsten says she'll go instead. Kirsten exits the house and Rebecca can't help following her. Ned's annoyed that Miranda treated Kirsten with disdain. Miranda defiantly replies that Rebecca's her friend, but Ned counteracts that Kirsten's his family.
Ramsay Street
Catching up with Kirsten half way down the street, Rebecca wants to know why she slept with Paul. Rebecca can't believe that she saw herself in Kirsten and took pity on her as a single mum. Now she wishes they'd never met. Elle rushes down the drive and listens from afar. Kirsten tearfully says that she wanted to stop the affair but no one had shown her attention like that before.
KIRSTEN: It wasn't until we actually got to Paris that I realised what I was doing and that it had to stop.
REBECCA: (face falling) Sorry, wait. You were in Paris?
KIRSTEN: (horrified) You didn't know?
Elle's face also falls. I love how everyone suddenly becomes deaf to conversations if they're, like, in the lounge room of #26 and the other characters are in the kitchen, but hearing something halfway down Ramsay Street is no problem.
