Summer and Declan being teased.
Max telling Izzy that he'd like the money to be repaid soon.
Izzy and Karl having a drink and a chat.
Karl struggling in Oscar's appointment
Lyn and Joe are making a shopping list for Christmas. Lyn asks Joe to pick up Ozzy's script while he's at the shops & wants him to check with the chemist that Karl prescribed the correct medicine. Joe wants to know why and Lyn tells him that Susan told her Karl's been drinking in secret. She also says she was a bit worried in the appointment.
The Coffee Shop:
Karl and Susan are discussing New Year's Eve (and also sounding remarkably like an episode of Seinfeld!)
SUSAN: What do you reckon we should do for New Year's Eve?
KARL: Spend it with Libby?
SUSAN: Yeah, any other ideas?
KARL: Whatever, just no hubbub.
SUSAN: It's New Year's Eve, there's gotta be hubbub.
KARL: Definitely no hubbub.
SUSAN: I think there's gotta be hubbub.
KARL: I'm too old for hubbub.
SUSAN: Oh, we'll see.
Summer and Declan are trying to talk to one another at the drinks fridge but get too embarrassed. Karl and Susan comment on it. Izzy walks in and avoids eye contact.
Max tells Steph that Izzy had a meeting with him about finances. "Retail therapy turns into retail amnesia apparently," he quips. Max says he'll have a quiet word with her. Steph says her and Izzy are meeting up with some biker people later, "I think we might actually end up being friends", she says. Max grins.
Izzy rushes in and apologises to Steph for running late. She tells her that she bought two pairs of $400 shoes, and Steph is astounded. She says that Izzy can do what she wants, "as long as Max doesn't find out about it I guess." Izzy wonders what she means by that, and Steph says that the loan got mentioned in one of her and Max's conversations. Izzy's annoyed.
Declan is riding round in circles out the front of the Hoyland's. Lyn's pushing the pram back to her house (with 'pram cam' going!), and Joe comes to tell her that everything was okay with the script. Joe asks Declan if he can help him, and Declan says he's going to a friend's house. Lyn comments on the Bishop's Christmas lights and Joe pretends to be uninterested.
Outside Declan's House:
Summer rides around and around.
Max asks Declan if he's looking for Summer. Declan says he was just riding past and scoots off. Max gives a wry grin.
Outside Declan's House:
Summer waits.... and waits... and waits some more.
Izzy says she'll give Steph a chance to apologise, but Steph says what concerns Max concerns her. Izzy disagrees and says she was prepared to make an effort to be friends with Steph but she doesn't think she will anymore.
Outside Declan's House:
Split screen of Declan and Summer riding towards each other. They nearly crash. They have an awkward conversation and ride off to their homes.
Max and Izzy are arguing. It all comes back to Izzy thinking Steph knows more than she should. Max says that Steph's part of the family, but Izzy says not her family, "not you and me." Max says he's going to have two kids in high school soon and he needs the money back. Izzy says he will ASAP. "My big brother used to stick up for me, but I guess things are different now."
Shot of the Bishop's Christmas lights.
LYN: Oh, gee the Christmas lights at the Bishop's look good. They're so lovely in the dark, they're really special.
Joe: Yeah, whatever.
Joe is wrapping bottles of wine to give to his workmates, but Lyn says all they can really afford is chocolate Santa's. Things are "chocolate Santa (kinds of) tight." Lyn's also going to make a test cake with the no name ingredients in case it tastes horrible. Joe laughs, "Christmas with the Scully's, ay. Gotta laugh."
Susan is writing Christmas cards. Karl is all cranky about sending fake cheer to everyone, and can't see why they should pretend. Susan suggests they have a takeaway and TV night, but Karl says he promised he'd see a patient at the hospital.
Karl is sitting having a drink and reading the paper. Izzy just happens to be there too and bumps into him. They have a chat and talk about their days. Izzy tells Karl about her fallout with Max, and Karl tells Izzy about how everyone tries too hard to be nice all the time. They bond over people not understanding them and how they see the world differently. They toast to "finding a way to live with regrets."
Lyn's cake has just finished baking and she tells Joe that he'll be having the first taste. Joe then goes into the living room and after telling Harvey to get off the couch, opens the front door for Susan. She tells him that she's there to steal Lyn's cake recipe, and she's had enough of writing Christmas cards. The three of them start talking about Ozzy and how he is doing much better since Karl prescribed that medicine for him. Susan tells them Karl has always been good with kids. Joe and Lyn share a look which Susan notices and asks what that was about. It doesn't take long for her to realise that Lyn told Joe about Karl's drinking and Joe quickly makes his excuses to leave, but Susan stops him. She tells both of them that she was wrong to jump to conclusions like she had. She tells them to take her word for it, but Lyn says she can't.
Steph asks Max if Izzy said anything, and Max tells her she did. He also tells her she shouldn't have got involved in the situation. It was between Izzy and himself, ‘brother and sister'. Steph tells him Izzy disrespected him and she got angry, which sets Max off and he says now everyone's angry. Steph hugs him and tells him not to do this, and then kisses him.
Susan is defending Karl, saying the reason his hands were shaking is because he has been working so much. Lyn reluctantly agrees that she could be right. “So you'll take my word for it then? There is no problem with Karl and alcohol.” Joe tells her that if she says so, they will take her word for it. “I do say so,” She tells them, “truly, there is no problem with Karl”.
Karl and Izzy's secret waterhole:
Karl and Izzy are talking about passion…
KARL: I assume you're talking about passion for life experience.
IZZY: Life, work…men.
Izzy tells him that she doesn't want “the same old drudgery every day.” Karl says he knows what she means.
IZZY: I mean ok, security and stability, what is that? You deny yourself, you save up, you get old, you die and you leave your money to your kids. To hell with that.
They both laugh and Izzy confesses she's been a bit depressed lately, but she says she thinks she now knows why. “I'm waiting for my next big passion” she tells him she knows it's taking a while to get here, but when it does arrive, “it'll be fantastic”. Karl sullenly says “if only”, but quickly adds that he meant himself. “That's not me either” he tells her.
IZZY: What is you? Have you ever broken out, tried something you shouldn't have?
KARL: No. Every day lately I...I ponder what I might've missed out on. I wanna break out...break through. Achieve something more.
He looks over to her and tells her he really hopes she finds what she's looking for. Izzy smiles at him, “I hope you do too.” He raises his glass to her and smiles. “I'm sure you will” she tells him.
