Recap
- Karl telling Lori she should do a pregnancy test.
- Joe telling Valda they know she's Lyn's mum.
The Scullys
Joe asks if Valda is okay as she flees out the front door to see Lyn at work. Jack asks Joe if he's going to stop her, but Joe thinks that maybe Valda and Lyn need to talk and get things out in the open. "At the end of the day Jack, it's those two that have got to work this out."
'A Good Hair Day'
Lyn is mopping the floor as Valda walks in, scaring her. Valda apologises, and Lyn says it's fine, and asks if Joe picked her up from the hospital. Lyn keeps on talking about cooking dinner, and the party in the salon whilst taking decorations down. Valda keeps trying to approach the important subject, and says that she knows Lyn saw the movie. Lyn keeps on waffling on until Valda says determindly, "Lynny!" "Alright, I saw it," she says angrily.
Outside the Salon
Jack and Joe walk up to the front door of the Salon and wonder if they should go in or not. They settle on sitting on a bench outside, ready for when either person comes out.
The Salon
Lyn is sitting down at the till doing the books, while Valda is in front of her trying to explain herself. She says she could barely look after herself let alone a child. Lyn says, "Look, please Aunty Val, I don't need to hear this." "I want you to hear this." Lyn looks expressionless. Valda tells Lyn that Connie was newly married, and in a better situation, and the family pressured Valda to give her up. She says Connie and Henry kept her up to date for awhile, sending her pictures and school reports, but that faded out. "I never stopped loving you." She tells Lyn that she was all set to be married, but he never turned up. "Charlie. That's who it was, your father." Lyn, who had been pretending not to listen and busy herself in her work all that time, stops at that point. She gets up, and walks to the front door holding it open for Valda to leave. Valda tearfully asks if she's okay, and Lyn says in a monotone, "I'm fine...I just really need to be alone now Aunty Val." She reconsiders this, and asks to see Joe.
Outside the Salon
Jack and Joe are talking with Lou, and they spot Valda walking out. Joe asks if Lyn is alright, and Valda says she doesn't know, looking confused. She stops Jack from going in after Joe. "Maybe they need some time alone."
The Salon
LYN: "So they lied to me. All of them. My mum, who I held in my arms, right to the end. How could you do that to someone you love Joe? How could you just lie to them? And every birthday, my whole life, he wrote on his card, 'From your ever loving dad'."
She starts to cry.
LYN: "I don't even know who my dad is."
Joe looks upset, and brings Lyn into a hug. He gently says that they should go home.
Outside the Scullys
Joe pulls up in the driveway with Lyn and Jack in the car. Lyn's in a daze. She opens her door, and her shawl falls on the ground. Jack gets out, picks up the shawl, and puts it around Lyn's shoulders. He sits on the car bonnet, and looks on in concern as Lyn and Joe make their way slowly upstairs to the house. He looks over to the Kennedys, and walks towards their house. Lori is coming out the front door, and stops in surprise when she sees him. She can sense something is up, and asks him if he needs to talk.
The Kennedys
Lori is making tea while Jack tells her about Lyn and how weird it is to see his parents like that. He says things can't go back to the way they were, and stuff he took for granted before has changed now. He wonders if he's supposed to start calling Valda, "Nanna" now. He doesn't know how a woman could give up a child like that. This has struck a chord with Lori. She casts her eyes downwards. "Maybe she didn't have any choice." She gets up off the couch, and walks to the counter. Jack says people always have a choice, and Lori says people slip up sometimes. Jack walks over to her and says he doesn't know how Valda was around them for so long, and didn't say anything.
Lou's House
Lou is making himself and Valda coffee. Valda wonders why Henry sent the tapes in the first place. She's being hard on herself, saying she's made things ten times worse. Lou is trying to make her feel better. He says she's got a lot of courage. Valda makes the decision not to run away again, and is determined to stay. "I've gotta be there for her." "Spoken like a true mother."
The Kennedys
Lori is doing some dishes with her back to Jack. He says he's glad she's around because she's the only person that he can talk to "like this", not that he deserves it. Lori says she's dumb enough to listen. "You're not dumb, you're one of the smartest people I know." "Well how come I'm such a screw-up?" She pauses, and turns around to face him. "Guess who might be pregnant." Jack looks shocked.
The Scullys
Lyn is at the table with Steph and Joe. She says she knows what all the memories were about now, when Darcy hypnotised her. Valda and Connie fighting over her. There was a huge argument one time when Connie wouldn't let Lyn stay with Valda on the holidays. Steph says she can't help but feel a little sorry for Valda. Lyn is astounded. "Steffy, she was the one who lived the lie. And made me live the lie." Steph and Joe say they probably did that to protect her, but Lyn won't hear it. She goes on to say there's a man out there somewhere, who knows he has a child. "Some stranger is my father...some spineless, selfish stranger."
The Kennedys
Jack asks Lori how it happened, and she says that mistakes happen. He asks who the guy is. Lori looks at him and says, "Connor." Jack is incredulous. "Connor? Since when were you two an item?" Lori gets angry that Jack thinks he has a right to get jealous over her. He says he's sorry, he just didn't expect it. "I mean, how long has Michelle been gone..." Lori says to Jack that he's not in a position to judge her, and he says he didn't mean it that way. He still can't get over it, and tries to casually ask how long it's been going on. Lori catches on and says, "You mean, was I checking him out while I was with you. You are unbelievable! No matter what happens, it's always back to you." Lori is really angry and hurt. She says she thought they could be friends, but obviously not. She storms off to her room leaving Jack looking a bit ashamed.
The Scullys
Joe, Lyn and Steph are sitting at the kitchen table in silence. There's a knock at the door. It's Valda, anxiously asking to see Lyn. Lyn tells her to come in. She wants to speak with her alone, and Steph and Joe go back into the kitchen. Valda says she has so many things to tell her, but Lyn says "Why would I want to hear more lies?" Lyn doesn't know what's real and what's not anymore. She says to Valda that mothers don't lie to their children. Valda says that she had no choice, but Lyn interrupts her. "No, no, no, no, you listen to me. My mother is dead. Do you understand that?" She walks over to the front door and once again holds it open for Valda to leave. Valda doesn't know what to say, and Lyn tells her she doesn't want to see her anymore.
The Kennedys
Lori comes out of her room to find Jack still sitting at the kitchen table. "I thought you would have gone by now." He apologises sincerely this time, "I wanna be here for you, it was just a bit of a shock that's all." He asks what Connor said, and if he's being supportive. "Yeah, I'm sure he would be..." Jack can't believe that she hasn't told him. She says she will when she knows for sure. Jack says it could be a false alarm then, but Lori insists her body feels different. He asks about an at home test, and Lori says she's got one. "Will you wait around?" Jack says of course he will.
Lou's House
Lou is trying to talk some sense into a flustered Valda, saying that Lyn is probably just in shock. He asks where she's going to stay now, and Valda doesn't know. He says she can stay at his place, and won't hear of it when Valda tries to protest. He tells her to go and have a bath, and he'll get her stuff for her.
The Kennedys
Jack is sitting nervously on the couch. Lori slowly shuffles out into the loungeroom. He knows the result was positive, and quickly walks over to Lori saying it's going to be okay. "How? How is it going to be okay?" She starts to cry and begs Jack not to tell anyone. He asks when she's going to tell Connor, and Lori says she doesn't know. She lets him know that her and Connor aren't exactly in a relationship. Jack thinks that Connor needs to know. "Look what secrets did to you, to us, look at mum. You're gonna have to tell him." He hugs her. Lori is distressed and crying.
