Steph's getting on with her life
Darcy wants Karl to pay $800 000 to buy him out
Karl doesn't have that kind of money and, if he did, he wouldn't be giving it to Darcy! Darcy tells him that they were given a great offer from Total Cover Health: Karl's the one refusing to do the sensible thing. Karl can't believe he's repaying him and Susan in this way after they've been so loyal. Darcy says he had to fight for every improvement he made – Susan had to stick up for him! Karl thinks he can forget about Susan's support now. Darcy believes he deserves to be rewarded for his hard work. Karl knows he didn't do all this for the patients and opens the door, Darcy's cue to leave. Darcy gets up and says he didn't do it just for the patients but for Karl and Susan too.
KARL: You're not going to get one penny of that money and if you don't like it you can sue me!
He shows Darcy out and sighs.
Drew is fixing up a bike for his mate. Steph was kinda hoping he would be free – she wanted to talk him into a drink after work. Drew suggests that she stay and help him with it. Steph thinks rebuilding is way out of her league. Drew says she can just assist him – he could do with the help. She thanks him and gets to work.
Drew asks how things are going – Steph hasn't been at work and has been driving herself mad, thinking too much.
Dee dumps something in the bin – it's a home pregnancy test. She says “Idiot,” aloud and tells Bob to sit, before apologising to him for yelling at him. She's almost crying.
Karl's getting another valuation on the surgery. He can't believe that Darcy is trying to do over the only people who stood by him. Darcy is very cool about it, telling him he repaid him by building up the surgery. As it is he has to start afresh and Karl and Susan could be set for life. Karl wants to talk about Darcy's dishonesty but Darcy adamantly denies he was dishonest. They may never need to work again – doesn't Karl owe Susan that much? Karl can't believe this – Darcy certainly is something. Darcy says he's leaving – while Karl has many options, he only has one. Karl doesn't say a thing and leaves the room.
Dee is sitting sadly with Bob when Toadie and Joel come in. Tim Collins has invited Toadie to a fancy men-only club where the waiting list is five years. Toadie is worried he'll look like a ‘clever bogan' (©Tim Collins, ep#3864). Dee and Joel wonder if he should get some lessons in etiquette and so on but he doesn't have much time.
Dee gets up – she has to go for a walk.
Joel is trying to help Toadie but Toadie's finding it all quite difficult. So many questions…Joel advises him just to copy what everyone else is doing. They decide they need an expert: Karl.
Dee spots Karl, sitting alone, and decides to go over and sit with him. They talk about Darcy fleetingly – Karl thinks Dee knows him better than he does. He asks if she's alright and she says she'll be fine. He fills her in on the Darcy situation and she presumes his deal fell through. He picks up on this, saying he thought the deal had come out of the blue. She tells him that Darcy's been planning to sell the surgery from the beginning – he's been negotiating with Marcus for months.
Susan can't believe it. Karl can't believe she's still defending him – he had his suspicions right from the start but she wouldn't listen!
KARL: You made me feel like an uptight old fool!
She wanted to see the best in Darcy. Karl goes through all the evidence that Darcy was dodgy – all the evidence Susan wouldn't back up.
SUSAN: I'm so sorry, Karl.
KARL: Are you sorry because you behaved appallingly? Or are you sorry because you've been proven wrong?
Karl walks out, closely followed by Susan.
Dee has told the boys the Darcy news and they can't believe it. They wonder what Karl will do. Toadie asks Dee along to the club with him – she could help him out. Dee doesn't want to go and ends up yelling at him and walking away – Toadie wonders what's up with her.
Steph hopes Karl and Joe's cricket feud is over. She sits with Darcy, seeing he looks a bit lonely, while Drew gets the drinks. They ask him about joining the cricket team just as Susan hurries in and asks for a word – now.
Susan is really angry, and can't believe he betrayed her and Karl. He tries to bring Dee into it but Susan tells him to stop shifting the blame. He says maybe he overreacted to Karl not selling but he had everyones best interests at heart. Susan wants the truth.
Steph and Drew play pool. Steph's sorry for keeping Drew and says his work here is done. Things are going great for Libby and Drew – they're going to look for a new place. Steph hopes they keep her in mind for the flat – she might take it over from them. Drew won't go home until he's won the game.
Darcy is still going on about how he can't believe that Karl didn't take the offer. He says he wanted it to be a surprise. She knows he's still trying to lie his way out of it. He says he's sorry for how things have turned out. Susan thinks they have to repair things – make things right. Darcy says he really needs to leave Erinsborough and, to set up a new practice, he needs money.
SUSAN: You're going ahead with the plan.
DARCY: I have to.
Susan can't believe it – will nothing change his mind? Darcy says his hands are tied.
SUSAN: Do you remember when you were a little kid and your parents wouldn't let you climb that tree in the back yard and I showed you how? And that was going to be our little secret…
And she told him what to say to that teacher at school who said he was useless.
And she snuck him out to a rock concert – Darcy's friends thought she was the coolest auntie around!
SUSAN: What happened to you, Darcy?
His smile drains from his face and Susan walks off.
The etiquette lessons aren't going well. Now onto introducing a partner…but Toadie hasn't got one.
JOEL: Why don't you ask Steph?
Yes, Steph, please!!
TOADIE: Yeah, well, I don't think she'll be up for socialising, y'know? She hates formal occasions and that.
Darn – hopes of Stoadie dashed again!
Toadie retrieves Joel's little black book.
Susan apologises to Karl, saying her loyalty should have been with him. She thought she knew him so well, having helped raise him. Karl hugs her, saying the most important thing now is to find a way out of this mess. Karl won't let him walk all over him and they agree they'll beat him.
Dee creeps down the hallway, carrying her suitcases. She places an envelope on the table and says goodbye to Bob then calls a taxi….
…only for Toadie to come down the hallway and see her packed bags. He picks up her letter. He asks where she's going but she doesn't want to say. Fighting back tears, she tells him she just has to get away. She starts to cry and Toadie takes her into a hug. They sit down and Toadie asks her what it is, joking with her that he hopes he won't find Joel lying dead in bed. Whatever it is, it can't be that bad that she can't tell a mate.
DEE: I'm pregnant.
