Recap
- Ruth agrees to marry Phil.
- Susan tells Karl that Sarah can stay to dinner.
- Susan questions Karl about why he's getting Harold to work with Sarah on a job share basis.
- Karl tells Madge that she has a cerebral aneurysm and it needs immediate surgery.
Lou's Place
Lou is thrilled at Phil and Ruth's news, and loves the ring! He thinks Phil should have gone to him first for a discount on a ring! Lou also asks after Ben, and if he's up to visitors yet, which Ruth agrees he is. Lou toasts the happy couple.
The Hospital
Madge is packing up to leave, and Karl tells her that her leaving makes her a walking timebomb. If she leaves then she's putting her life at risk, and he doesn't want her to do that - she needs surgery immediately. Madge tells Karl that she needs time to tell Harold - and that she'll come back when she's ready. Karl isn't happy about that arrangement, but Harold walks in and the argument stops. Harold is convinced everything is fine, and asks Karl about the tests. Karl says that only the neurosurgeon will have to answer Harold's questions, and that the doctor will be in touch with Madge very soon. In the meantime, Madge is hassling Harry to leave, and Karl doesn't say a word, walking off with Madge's CAT Scan in hand.
Number 28
Susan has cooked Karl's dinner, and has arranged a romantic evening for them both. Karl likes the idea of Susan being away more often - this adds more spice to their relationship! There's a knock at the door, and it's Sarah who needs the keys to the surgery so she can get her study books for this evening. Karl reprimands Sarah for studying at the surgery, and tells her not to bring the keys back tonight - he'll get them tomorrow. Sarah leaves, and Susan tells Karl not to be so harsh on Sarah - she's a nice girl, and he should appreciate her more.
Think he's already done that, Susan.
The Hospital
Ben is asleep, and Lou comes to visit, flowers in hand. He tentatively approaches the bed, and Ben is pleased to see his friend. Lou shows him the flowers and Ben likes them - they brighten up the place. Lou tells him how glad he is that Ben's awake, and admits his guilt over what happened at the race; it's his fault for pushing Ben into it. Ben tells him not to feel bad - he wanted to do it, and he enjoyed it. He tells Lou not to blame himself - he doesn't regret a moment of it, and racing is a passion of his. Lou is grateful for the forgiveness.
Ben asks about the garage, and Lou tells him he's not accepting any more work until Ben's recovered. Ben says that might take a while, as he still can't feel his legs, and Lou admits it might take time. But he tells his friend that he's come this far, and he's going to be alright. Ben's eyes well up.
Number 24
Madge is washing up, and Paul is in his bedroom playing the guitar. Harry tells Madge that the earphones she bought Paul are working wonders! Harry admits to Madge how worried he was, and asks her again if she had any news on the test results. Madge confesses that there was a little problem but that it can be dealt with, which immediately raises Harry's suspicions. So Madge reassures him that everything will be fine.
Number 28
Susan pours Karl some more wine, telling him that she has the perfect after dinner treat for him.
KARL: And what would that be?
SUSAN: That would be me.
KARL: Oooh.
There's a knock at the door, sadly, and it's Harold who wants to see Karl about Madge's test results. He tells Karl that he's concerned about the results, but Karl reminds him about doctor-patient confidentiality, which makes Harry thinks that there is something wrong after all. Karl tries to deny that he has any knowledge, and tells Harry that he has to talk to Madge.
The Hospital
Ben is pleased about Ruth and Phil's engagement, and thinks they act like an old married couple already. Ben tells his mum that a guy from hospital seems to keep his magazine stock up to date, so he's okay on that front. Ruth finds a medal on the magazines - a bronze medal for swimming. Ruth immediately recognises it, but keeps it from the boys, who think someone must have lost it by mistake.
Number 24
The next morning, and Madge is telling Harry to stop pestering her, but Harry thinks that there is something going on. But Harold is annoying Madge more and more and she gets very irate, and suggests that if he wants to do something, that he find out who stole the Ramsay Street signs. Harry goes to answer the door to Hannah, and Madge wonders if she can help them find the Ramsay Street sign stealer; Han jumps to conclusions and can't believe that Paul ratted on her...
Hannah has to admit that it was her who did it.
The Hospital
Sarah is chatting to Ben, telling him how worried they were about him, and how worried Caitlin was. Ben wants to know why Sarah's been having problems, and she admits to him that she's got herself involved with a married man, and she's fallen in love. Ben asks her what on earth she's doing, especially if he's still with his wife. He tells her to get out, quickly, but Sarah tells him that she's tried, and it's not easy.
Number 26
Ruth tells Phil she's worried about Ben, and confesses to him that she lost sleep over the medal she found last night. It belongs to Geoff Burke, Ben's real father, and he's obviously here in Erinsborough. Phil wonders if he has been in contact with Ruth, but she denies it - he wouldn't get in contact with her. She thinks it must be that hospital volunteer who's been spending time with her son.
The Hospital
Ben thinks it's wrong, a married man who's sick of his wife, coming onto Sarah, but she denies it's like that. He's actually treating her badly, and Sarah admits that he has a family. Ben tells her to walk away, but Sarah says that nothing has happened between them yet. Ben thinks that's good - and reminds her to get out of it, right now.
Number 24
Hannah tells the Bishops that she only meant to take one sign, but then it became a game to her. She admits that she did it to get back at them regarding the juke box at the Coffee Shop, and Harold is very cross and upset about it - it's cost the council time and money! Harry also realises that Paul therefore knew about it, but Madge defends Paul - he was just covering for a friend. She tells Han that they'll have to tell her dad.
Number 26
Phil is furious with Hannah over the sign, and she admits it was a joke that got out of hand. She also borrowed Phil's tools to do it! Harold leaves, and Phil assures him that Hannah will be punished. Ruth comforts Hannah and thinks that not that much damage has been done. But Phil demands that Hannah get the signs, take them to the council, and pay for them out of her own money. He doesn't think that they'll press charges against her, but he hopes she'll get a scare.
Ruth tells Phil that she thought Geoff was out of her life forever, but it looks like she's going to have to face him at the hospital at some point.
The Hospital
A doctor sees that Ben has eaten his lunch, and is pleased, just as Geoff appears. Geoff brings more magazines for Ben and they chat.
Down the corridor, Ruth and Phil arrive, running into Ben's doctor who tells them about the tests he's done. He tells Ruth about severe bruising to the spinal cord - they can't tell any more problems until the bruising has gone. The doctor can't promise anything, and can't promise that his recovery will be complete, despite Ben's longing to get back on his feet.
