Lassiter's Lake
Luke is sitting, staring into the water.
No.28
Grandpa Tom is telling Mal, Libby, Billy and Toadie tall tales about getting his own back on "scabs" (strike breakers).
Just then, Karl and Susan arrive home and Karl asks for a "disaster report" for the time he was away(!)
No.32
Sam and Danni are moving furniture in. Danni is going to redecorate a bit so she can feel more at home. She tells Mal she and Ben have a plan for advertising the jewellery. She asks Sam if he'll be their model. He isn't keen!
No.28
Susan tells Billy and Mal that they had a great time in the country. Grandpa Tom is heading off to a political meeting. Toadie decides to go along with him. Karl asks Libby and Mal if Grandpa Tom bored them while they were away, but they assure him that Grandpa is actually a lot of fun.
No.26
Melissa calls round to see George and apologises for what happened at the party. George tells her she likes Billy and they *did* kiss. She explains Billy was just comforting her when she was upset, it's not his fault. Melissa accepts this and invites her down to the Coffee Shop with her and Billy.
Surgery
Luke storms into Karl's office.
LUKE: It's about time you came back to face me! You want to hear something really funny?! You know, I was in here a while ago for a check- up and you said I was in perfect health? Well, guess what!
KARL: I know, Luke, I've had your report faxed through from the Police Medical Office - take a seat. We've got a lot to talk about.
LUKE: No, I don't want to take a seat, I want to know why you didn't pick it up!
KARL: The condition that's suspected here is Non- Hodgkins Lymphoma. It's not the sort of thing you pick up in a routine check.
LUKE: What is it you doctors are always saying?! With cancer, the most vital thing is early detection. You had your chance to detect it a month ago, and you stuffed it! I could die because of that. And if I do, it would be your fault.
Coffee Shop
Melissa, Billy and George come in and Melissa hangs over Billy a bit, giving George a clear message.
Surgery
KARL: Let's discuss this rationally. Wild accusations won't help, Luke! Now, when you first came to see me, I did a routine check of your lymph nodes. There was no sign of any swelling at that stage.
LUKE: There must have been some tests that would have shown it up!
KARL: Listen to me. It is not detectable at that stage.
LUKE: I still think...
KARL: Luke, it's a natural reactions to look for explanations, to look for someone to blame. Because it scares us that ultimately, we're at the mercy of random chance. Or fate, of God, if you prefer. The fact is, it's no- one's fault. It's just sheer rotten luck. Now the best thing you can do right now is to stop looking for reasons, and get on with fighting it. OK?
Karl recommends an oncologist to Luke - a friend of his, Casey Walker - he's one of the best around. He'll try to get him in for tomorrow. Luke will have to have further tests.
KARL: Have you talked to anyone about this?
LUKE: No!
KARL: I don't think you should be spending a lot of time alone right now. Look, why don't you call a friend? Get them to meet you here after we've finished talking.
LUKE: No. I don't need anyone, I don't need to be picked up.
KARL: Well, whatever you're most comfortable with. I know you've got a lot of friends, Luke, and I know they'll be there for you if you need them. I hope I can include myself in that. If you've got any questions, or just want to have a chat - you know where I live. Come on, take a seat. We'll make some phonecalls and see about getting you healthy!
Ramsay Street
Toadie and Grandpa Tom are walking back from the political meeting. Toadie had quite a good time. Grandpa Tom tells him how important the "battle for social justice" is.
On the driveway of No.28, Mal is trying to start his car, unsuccessfully. Grandpa Tom wanders up and tells Mal to pass him a spanner.
No.24
Sam and Danni asks Luke how the results of his medical was, and he tells them everything was fine. He lies and says there's a waiting list to get in to the Police Training Academy, so he won't be going just yet.
Coffee Shop
Toadie joins Billy, Melissa and George. Toadie is enthusiastic about being a fighter for peace, he might join up to the "Revolutionary Socialists"! Toadie then says he's got a key to his place and invites them all round - for a party!
No.32
Toadie, Billy, Melissa and George decide to play Truth or Dare. Melissa's question for Billy is "Did you enjoy kissing George?". He decides to take the dare instead!
Surgery
Luke comes back to see Karl after hours. He's come to apologise for ranting at him earlier.
KARL: You know I'm here, don't you? Any time.
LUKE: I know.
KARL: And while I can never fully understand what you're going through, I can be a good sounding- board.
LUKE: Yes.
KARL: But you'd rather go it alone, wouldn't you?
LUKE: I think I would, yes.
KARL: Well, I hope you change your mind. I hope you come and talk things through. I'd appreciate it. I think we could be of benefit to each other.
LUKE: Um...I'll keep it in mind. I mean, if things get...too tough...well, you'll be it. In the meantime, I...
KARL: It's your decision, Luke, and yours alone.
No.32
Toadie chooses "dare". Billy says he'll think of a great one for Toadie!
No.24
Jo asks Luke how long he'll have to wait to get into the police force. He tells her he doesn't know. She offers to help him to keep fit, and he suddenly tells her sharply to mind her own business. Then he apologises, saying he's got a lot on his mind.
JO: I know you were really looking forward to starting the training. It must be awful to have to wait.
LUKE: Yeah. Yeah, it is.
No.28
Karl is very subdued this evening and Susan remarks on it. Mal, Libby and Grandpa Tom come in, having made a lot of progress with Mal's car. Then Angie and Stonie arrive looking for Toadie, they are a day early. They invite everyone over to No.32 for a welcome- home drink!
No.32
Toadie is wearing a shirt and a towel - his dare is to run down Ramsay Street naked! Unfortunately, he runs straight into Angie and the Kennedys!
ANGIE: Well, I've seen it all, now! Unfortunately, so has everyone else!
