Hannah and Debbie are hanging out when Annalise comes in, she's just got back on the early train. Debbie serves her, and then we see that Katarina is lurking in the background.
She comes over to talk to Annalise, to ask her for a "little chat". They head off to the Waterhole.
KATARINA: Have you seen Mark yet?
ANNALISE: No, I just dropped my bags, he's not home yet. So...what do you want to talk about?
KATARINA: Mark. I've been seeing quite a lot of him with you being away.
ANNALISE: What, this fundraising bizzo?
KATARINA: No...more personal. I'm glad I ran into you, Annalise, I want to be up- front about this. He needed me and I was there for him.
ANNALISE: What do you mean?
KATARINA: Well, it wasn't planned. He was lonely. I went over there and we cooked together...
ANNALISE: What, you've been to the house?
KATARINA: Mmm. We've found we've had a lot of common ground. Both love Italian food...
ANNALISE: You know, it's funny, Katarina, cos Mark didn't mention anything on the phone.
KATARINA: There are some things that you don't mention on the phone. But I'm sure he's not planning hide it from you.
ANNALISE: Hide what from me? I mean, are you telling me you and Mark, um...
KATARINA: You think that's impossible, don't you? With the way I am.
ANNALISE: No, I didn't say that.
KATARINA: Just don't underestimate others, huh.
ANNALISE: Well, what exactly happened between you two?
KATARINA: I'm sorry, Annalise. It started out quite innocently. But, you might as well know. You see, I love him.
ANNALISE:(scoffs) Well, that's your problem isn't it, not mine.
KATARINA: Are you sure?
Annalise looks uneasy.
Michael and Danni are kissing by the lockers. Debbie comes up and tells Michael off for missing his paper- round, Phil has had to do it instead. They talk about the school dance and Danni wants to go.
BRETT: I wouldn't mind going if someone needs a partner.
He looks pointedly at Debbie.
DEBBIE: Well, I'm sure someone does, Brett(!)
Cody comes up and tells them that the ball has been called off by Ms Teschendorff (acting principal) for being "classist, sexist and anachronistic". Michael agrees with her(!)
Pam is excitedly showing Doug her finished bike. He finds a spring on the floor and asks Pam where it comes from.
Debbie comes in and finds Andrew sitting at a table. She tells him that the ball has been axed and asks him to help. He tells her he'll come over to talk to Ms Teschendorff after school and invites her to have a juice with him.
Pam is trying to work out where the spring should go on the bike while Doug mocks her. He is more interested designing the logo for his home- brew.
PAM: Why don't you go and tinker with your truck.
DOUG: There's nothing wrong with it.
PAM: WELL, MAKE ME A CUP OF COFFEE!
Debbie has made an appointment for Andrew with Ms Teschendorff. When Debbie has gone, Ms Teschendorff invites Andrew to talk about it over a drink. He accepts and tells her to call him Macca!
Mark comes in and is surprised to see that Annalise is back early.
ANNALISE: I saw Katarina this morning.
ANNALISE: Mmm. Sounds to me like you haven't been missing me at all, Mark.
MARK: What did she say?
ANNALISE: Oh, we had a nice old chat. She's in love with you, you're in love with her...looks like I didn't have to unpack my bags after all.
MARK: It's all a lot of bull, Annalise.
ANNALISE: Yeah? Sounded pretty convincing to me.
Hannah is making something out of fabric at the table. Brett comes in for a cup of tea with Helen. She is taking eye pills as she has "open- angle glaucoma" which is very treatable.
Helen drops the pills on the floor and Hannah looks worried.
ANNALISE: Mark, I wasn't happy about our relationship before I left. And now I find you've been gallivanting with this Katarina.
MARK: I wasn't gallivanting!
ANNALISE: What were you doing, then?!
MARK: I told you, we made some pasta and we played some Scrabble.
ANNALISE: Come on, Mark!
MARK: She was lonely, I gave her a bit of companionship, what's wrong with that?
ANNALISE: Did you kiss her?
MARK: She kissed *me*.
ANNALISE: Oh, and I suppose you couldn't fight her off, either!
MARK: It was just a kiss.
ANNALISE: Do you fancy her?
MARK: No. And I can see where she might have got the wrong idea, I was a bit lonely too.
ANNALISE: Oh yeah, so now it's my fault for going away!
MARK: Listen, Annalise, nothing happened, OK?
Er, I seem to remember you kissing her passionately, Mark.
ANNALISE: Haven't even asked about your parents.
MARK: You haven't given me a chance, have you?!
ANNALISE: Yeah, well they were really disappointed that you weren't there.
MARK: I'll go and see them soon.
ANNALISE: How about now?
ANNALISE: I need some time alone, Mark. You've been right off the wall lately. Maybe you if you do the decent thing by your parents you might turn into a human being again.
MARK: Well, thanks a lot, and welcome home(!)
Andrew and Ms Teschendorff ("Anne") are discussing the ball. He is slowly convincing her to change her mind.
Mark and Katerina come in.
KATARINA: You wanted to see me?
MARK: Yeah. I want to get things sorted out, Katarina.
KATARINA: Good, so do I.
MARK: Things have got out of hand, OK? So, anyway, this is the deal. We don't see each other again, final.
KATARINA: Can I have a drink?
MARK: Sure, what do you want?
She orders from the waiter.
KATARINA: What brought this on?
MARK: You shouldn't have spoken to Annalise this morning.
KATARINA: She deserved to know the truth.
MARK: You fed her a lot of distorted garbage.
KATARINA: You only have her version.
MARK: Stop playing games, Katarina. I love Annalise, why can't you take no for an answer?
KATARINA: You really mean it? You don't want to see me again?
MARK: I thought we could have been friends. It's too bad it isn't possible.
He stalks out. Katarina smiles to herself.
Debbie has muscled in on the kitchen table and now is telling Hannah off for taking up too much room(!)
Hannah ends up accidentally knocking over a glass of drink on to Debbie's books and Helen tells her off for being careless. Poor Hannah.
Pam can't find where the spring should go on the bike. Doug is still mocking her a bit. He excitedly shows her his logo for the beer, and Pam scoffs.
Andrew comes round to tell Debbie that the ball is back on. He'll be going as her partner too and Debbie is a bit disappointed. She invites him to stay for dinner(!) but he says he'd better go.
In the kitchen, Helen has dropped a knife off the bench and it is currently standing upright in the floor lino. Hannah looks very worried.
Annalise is packing Mark's bags to go and see his parents. He keeps trying to get out of it, but she won't be swayed.
Just then, Katarina rings. Mark starts to tell her to get lost, then says she'd better come round tonight so they can thrash it out once and for all with Annalise. Er...why?!
Debbie picks up the knife and starts blaming Hannah for dropping the knife. Debbie starts really ranting at Hannah and she runs off, upset.
Michael and Danni come in kissing. Danni has to head home though. Cody is at a table and tells Michael that she's glad that Michael is happy.
Pam still can't find where the spring goes. Doug wants to take the bike down the garage.
Cody comes in and Pam shows her the spring. Cody excitedly says it's off the pedal on her guitar - she's been looking for it! Pam despairs.
PAM: Doug, I want you to keep very still for at least a minute. And then, I want you to pour me a very long, very strong gin and tonic.
Brett and Helen are doing Qigong, but suddenly Helen feels very dizzy. She admits it's happened a few times, since she's been taking the pills. He tells her she doesn't have to keep taking the pills, he'll read up to see if there's an alternative.
MARK: Right, let's get it straight. Did I make any promises? Say anything about an ongoing relationship?
KATARINA: You know what happened as well as I do, Mark.
ANNALISE: That's not an answer! I mean, you made it sound like you two were having a major affair!
MARK: That's all in her head.
ANNALISE: Yeah, so why don't you just stay away from us?
KATARINA: I wouldn't look so smug if I were you. Where were you when he needed you?
ANNALISE: Meaning what, exactly?
KATARINA: Meaning you didn't feel the need to come home even when he's lost his job and he has a lawsuit pending?
ANNALISE: What, you lost your job, Mark, what is this?
MARK:(to Katarina) Drop it, OK?
ANNALISE: Well, what?! Did you get the sack?
KATARINA: You haven't told her? Wow, you two are big on communication(!) Some sort of relationship! Luckily, he had someone to talk to.
MARK: Right, that's it, get out, Katarina.
KATARINA: I'll see you later, Mark.
ANNALISE: So, Mark, more secrets, huh? I mean, what else aren't you telling me?
MARK: I didn't get the sack. Lassiter's suspended me for six weeks, so I quit.
ANNALISE: Oh, great, just like that. So what was the suspension for?
MARK: Bert the butcher sued me over what I said about his meat.
ANNALISE: Why didn't you tell me?! I don't believe this.
MARK: Because I didn't want to say anything, and I still don't, OK?! Now, I'm going to finish packing and I'm going to the country tonight you happy?
ANNALISE: Oh, Mark!
Hannah is still working on the fabric and sticks a pin in herself. As she's sucking her finger, she sees a couple of book falls over, seemingly of their own accord. She looks very worried.
