Scott says he'll just deny Medeleine's claims, but she laughs and says they'll believe her as a respected writer, not him. She says he'd better be ready for work in the morning.
Toby is staying with Joe for the weekend. He is looking through a book and asks Joe what "volatile" means. Joe doesn't know so he covers and tells Toby to look it up in the dictionary, that way he'll remember it better(!) He gets Toby to read the definition out of the dictionary.
Toby asks if they can go out and play cricket - he's been practising. Joe agrees as long as they use a real ball this time, not a tennis ball!
Jim is recounting what happened with Hilary and the cake. Madeleine says she feels nervous about leaving the house. Helen and Jim are silent. Jim reluctantly agrees to drive her into town.
When they've gone, Scott sits down with Helen and tells her about Madeleine's reaction to him wanting to quit. He's worried that Madeleine will end his career, but he also doesn't want his name associated with a book full of lies.
Joe and Toby are playing cricket in the street. Katie comes up and joins them in the game. Joe bowls the ball to Toby and bowls him out. Toby says he was a bit scared of the hard ball. Joe says there's no need to be scared and he'll give him a demonstration. Toby bowls and Joe hits the ball straight into the taillight of Jim's car, smashing it.
Kerry is feeling depressed as she and Harold eat their Sunday dinner. Harold says he'll be glad when Madge gets back. He says it was probably for the best that Kerry and Joe split up, but Kerry doesn't think so. She starts to talk about her and Sky moving on and making a fresh start. Harold says that this is her fresh start and she has to stick things out in times of trouble. Harold suggests they go out for a run in the countryside all together - he has to visit a market garden for supplies. Kerry agrees.
Joe is examining Jim's taillight. Joe wants Toby and Katie to tell Jim that they broke it(!) but oddly enough they don't want to! Joe bribes them with $5 if they'll do it(!)
Jim is telling Scott that Madeleine keeps flattering and he's uncomfortable with it. Scott tells Jim that he's quitting the job with Madeleine - he's had enough of the lack of objectivity. Jim tells him not to be hasty - he hasn't got a job to go to if he quits now. Jim advises him to stick it out - ideals don't pay the bills and jobs don't grow on trees.
Toby and Katie comes in and tell Jim that they've broken his taillight. Jim is cross but thanks them for their honesty in telling him about it(!)
Harold, Kerry and Sky are enjoying a drive in the country and reminiscing about Kerry's childhood. They laugh and gets on well singing songs and messing about. Suddenly the car judders to a halt though and Harold gets out to have a look at the engine. Unfortunately times have moved on since Harold learned about engines(!)
Helen and Jim are bickering about Scott's job - she thinks Scott should stand up for his principles, Jim thinks Scott should be practical. Helen reminds Jim that he's brought his children up to be principled. Scott finally interrupts and tells them not to fight. He doesn't know what to decide.
Harold has checked the sparkplugs but can't find anything wrong. Kerry says maybe they should get a lift into town, but Harold says they're miles from anywhere. Kerry and Sky go to wait in the shade.
Madeleine comes in and asks Scott if he's made his decision yet. He says he hasn't yet. She tells him that she's in a position to be very helpful to Scott - she can get him on in his career through her contacts. Scott says it will be at the expense of him keeping quiet about facts that make her father look bad. Madeleine gives him a draft copy of the first 100 pages of her book and tells him to read it and check for lies.
Toby and Katie want Joe to play with them but he's trying to have a lie down. They blackmail him by saying they'll tell Mr Robinson who really smashed his light(!) Joe cracks and agrees to one game of hide-and-seek. Toby and Katie go to hide.
Kerry and Sky are sitting on the side of the road having a drink while Harold tries to fix the car. He's not having any joy though. Suddenly Sky lets out a scream and Kerry runs to her. She sees a redback spider walking on the blanket and realises in panic that Sky has been bitten.
