Number 24
Nicolette can't believe her bother going off on one at their father despite Jane trying to provide some rationale. Even Vic pipes up to point out that Byron has "every right to be angry with me."
NICOLETTE: Both of you need to stop treating him like he's a child!
VIC: I'm treating him like someone who's been let down by his father, which he has.
In the end, its Jane that heads across the road to sort things out as it's her "family too."
Number 32
Byron though isn't in the mood to talk with his mum, but when he does talk, he can't see how "blind" Nicolette is to their dad. Jane asks that he opens up to her over how he feels, but his reply is that he doesn't "know how I feel" because "I don't know how to make sense of it in my own head."
JANE: Just try and explain it.
Byron: I despise him, that's for sure. I think about everything that he's done to you, and to us, and it makes me feel sick. And then, I find out that he's dying and I'm upset. I mean, even after everything I care and I love him.
JANE: Okay, of course you do.
BYRON: How is that possible?!
JANE: Because we are capable of love and loathing at the same time.
BYRON: I don't want to feel like this.
JANE: Okay. But you do. And it is complex, and it is uncomfortable and all that you can do is sit with it.
Jane forces Byron to then sit on the sofa with her and wants to acknowledge that everyone knows he is hurt, but then adds that she doesn't want Vic to die "and the only thing that you've allowed yourself to feel is hate."
JANE: Because if you shut him out, then you will live with that regret forever.
Lassiters Complex (next day)
Paul updates Krista on some hotel business before he leaves for New York including, subject to Krista's approval, that he's hired a new manager for the day- to- day running of the hotel - a Brett Heade who's worked at other Lassiters locations and comes highly recommended. "I'll miss you," Krista tells Paul, a phrase she thought she'd never use!
PAUL: People do say that I grow on them! A bit like a fungus, really!
Leo catches his dad before he goes and hears that he has written his eulogy but will fine- tune it on the journey over. Paul then digs out of his pocket a photo of Rosemary (and Helen) to show the pair and Krista comments on how glamorous Rosemary was.
PAUL: Yeah, she was a very special person in every way.

Nell zones out of listening to her dad after JJ texts her - he's mumping about working… but hasn't actually started the job yet! When she does zone back in, it's bad news - Toadie isn't writing to request an extension for the maths assessment given she wasted the time she had to do it hanging out with JJ!
Vineyard
Nell's reply to JJ is that at least he hasn't to worry about school as the lad (finally) arrives at the vineyard ready to work. He isn't amused at his parents accompanying him into the vineyard especially as they both dish out the advice about how lucky he is to have this job!
Leo finds his new employee and the first task is a tour but it comes with a warning to the lad - he isn't treating this as work experience, JJ has to put a shift in!
Number 32
It's a bit of a stand- off as Vic, Nicolette and Jane enter #32 where Byron is waiting in the kitchen.
NICOLETTE: In case you're wondering, this is the part where you apologise.
He begins by asking if his dad found somewhere to sleep last night - Vic did by sleeping on the couch at #24 and tries to make a joke to lighten the situation by saying it wasn't as comfy as the one in #32! Vic acknowledges that what Byron said to him was "all true" and he isn't "running away from it" so asks his son to get whatever else he needs off his chest.
Byron: Dad, I… I don't want you to die.
I don't think that is what Vic (or Jane/Nicolette) expected Byron to say but Vic immediately pulls his son in for a comforting hug, while likewise, Jane and Nicolette comfort each other too.
Number 22
It looks like the hard work last week with Shirley has paid off, Terese thinks as she's sold another apartment… or at least someone has, and (with permission) Toadie, hugs his wife. The happy face barely lasts a minute before the scowly face is back on and its due to Paul!
Eirini Rising
Paul is showing his cousin Hilary around the place when Terese appears. She isn't amused at Paul buying one of the apartments as it will encourage him to "pop over and loiter" whenever he wants! Once Terese has finished her rant, it turns out that it is Hilary and not Paul who has bought the apartment and he only found out about it earlier today.
Vineyard
With the tour concluded, Leo sets JJ up for the day - some maintenance of the vineyard, sorting out a delivery and
putting labels onto bottles of wine (the wine is a welcome gift for the new residents of Eirini Rising). After Leo heads off, JJ doesn't look too impressed and takes a selfie of himself (looking bored)…
Lassiters Complex
… which he sends to Nell with a message 'Cause of death - boredom.'
Toadie catches his daughter and wonders why she is skiving school again - apparently the teacher is sick so she's got a free period… and by a quirk of fate it's the maths teacher responsible for the assessment, so she gets the extension she was after! To make sure she does the assignment this time, Nell is being forced to head to Rebecchi Law where Toadie can keep an eye on her. However, she is one smart cookie and claims to have left the relevant textbook at school so he allows her to head back to school as long as she promises to study in the library.
Number 32
Neither Byron nor Nicolette can believe what their dad has said - that he wants to buy them a business, "something that you'll work on and build together." Vic also confirms that he isn't broke.
JANE: Just another little thing that he failed to mention.
His rationale is that he wouldn't have been allowed to stay at #32 had they know he could afford a hotel room! Nicolette doesn't want a business, she simply wants her dad "to get better." Vic would rather not waste the time he has left "hanging out for a miracle," he'd rather go knowing he's "made your lives better, easier" and asks that they will at least think about it.
Eirini Rising
After her little rant earlier, Hilary apparently is giving Terese the silent treatment… which according to Paul could last for months!
PAUL: Maybe you should throw her a few freebies just to hasten her forgiveness?!
Eating humble pie, Terese apologises to him for "jumping to conclusions" and asks that he doesn't accompany Hilary to the opening. Paul quickly says she is "off the hook" plus he can't come anyway as he is flying to New York. Terese is shocked to hear why he is flying to NYC, because Rosemary has died, and Paul also mentions he is planning on an extended trip too, "to catch up with the family properly."
Number 22
Jane catches Toadie while he nipped home for some forgotten files to check on how Nell is - even though she wasn't into the school, Jane did checked the attendance report and noticed that the lass wasn't in school. This is news to Toadie given he saw her heading to school and Jane confirms that the maths teacher wasn't off either! Toadie immediately calls his daughter but just gets her voicemail and it then dawns on him that he's "been played!"
Vineyard
Krista has come to the vineyard to try and de- stress Leo by having a picnic. The pair spot JJ and she asks if he is having fun.
JJ: Yep, it's a riot over here!
As the trio are talking, JJ spots Nell hiding behind one of the buildings and rushes to her once Leo/Krista head off to eat. "What are you doing?" he asks and her explanation is that she took the bus to "come cheer you up" since he "looked so sad" in the photo he sent. JJ asks if she will get into trouble skiving school and her nonchalant reply is "maybe" but then adds that nobody knows she is there as her phone is off.
NELL: So I've got at least a few hours of freedom! Why don't we have some fun?
And accompanied to 'California Blues' the pair explore the vineyard capering about. Eventually they end up back in the room where JJ is supposed to be putting the labels onto the bottles and suddenly they hear Leo/Krista so Nell hides just in the nick of time before they enter. Leo is unamused that JJ hasn't finished the labelling but he promises to get it done in 30 minutes.
Number 24
Vic pops round with some flowers for Jane as a thank you for her talking to Byron. While Jane puts them into the perfect vase, Vic admits he was surprised she "went in to bat for me." Jane's explanation over why she did that was that she still cares about him even though they are no longer married.
VIC: Wonders never cease!
Jane wonders why he can't believe that, which causes him to start laughing as he thinks she's only said what she said "because I'm dying and you want me to feel better about myself." "Maybe," Jane admits as she starts to well up but adds that "it doesn't make it any less true." Vic is then stunned when Jane reveals that she is proud of him for wanting to spend time with Nicolette and Byron and help them.
JANE: It's like the man I've seen over the last few days is the Vic that I always wanted you to be.
VIC: Um… better late than never, eh?!
The Waterhole
Toadie is getting desperate trying to track Nell down as he (and Terese) enter the bar. Krista overhears them and interrupts to say she might be at the vineyard and explains why.
TOADIE: I knew that we should be worried about those two!
Terese tries to play the situation down given they don't know the details but Toadie is angry given the lass is skiving school and lying to him… and JJ "always seems to be involved."
After spotting Cara and Remi in the bar, Terese tries to stop Toadie from going over and talking to them but fails. "Do you know what your son has talked my daughter into now?!" he asks when he reaches there table. They are none the wiser what Toadie is going on about, so he clarifies that JJ has convinced Nell to wag school "so that he has someone to muck around with at the vineyard." "Are you sure?" Remi asks and it's a yes from him but a no from Terese since they don't exactly know for sure what is going on. Remi is quick to get in that "Nell does have a mind of her own too," and thus "she could have made her own choices as well."
TOADIE: Your son is the bad influence here!
TERESE: Toadie!
CARA: Are you serious?!
After Toadie says JJ has "the rap sheet for it," that causes Cara and Remi to come to JJ's defence and tell Toadie that while they get he is angry, he shouldn't "take it out on our son!" In the end, its Terese who pulls Toadie away and asks "what were you thinking?!"
TERESE: Going off your head like that isn't going to help anyone!
Vineyard
As JJ puts the now labelled bottles into boxes, Nell is regretting switching on her phone as her dad knows where she is and that he doesn't sound happy! "How about we make a run for it?" JJ suggests and while tempting, Nell knows she needs to "face him at some point." With her fate sealed, JJ instead suggests making the most of it by raiding the leftover catering in the cool room. "Can't say no to that," Nell replies and the pair head off.
However when they left, they didn't even close the door let alone put the padlock back on and of course an intruder comes in. However, rather than nicking the bottles of wine, the intruder does something even worse - a syringe (with a very long needle) containing some liquid is removed from the intruders pocket and injected into one of the bottles!!
