The Penthouse
Paul comes in, and finds David and Leo on the sofas. He nonchalantly tells them that Montana has been denied bail, as she's considered a flight risk.
LEO: She must be terrified.
PAUL: Ugh, I wouldn't even waste your time worrying about her. You should just be grateful that you got out in time, before she had the chance to drag you down with her.
LEO: Did you know about her situation before today?
PAUL: Ah, Terese has been in your ear, has she? Leo, I wouldn't give any credence to the ravings of a desperate woman. This is all on her, and now she's looking to cast blame however she can.
Paul goes to make some phone calls, leaving Leo and David to talk. Leo repeats the theory that Paul knew about Montana's financial and legal trouble.
DAVID: Why wouldn't he warn everyone?
LEO: Sabotage? When she ended things with me, it did feel out of the blue, but if Dad knew about her financial situation, he could've used it as leverage.
DAVID: To make her break up with you.
LEO: I hate to say it, but...
DAVID: It's a classic Dad move.

Nicolette is browsing the John Wong Investigations website! She leaves a stroppy message on Paul's voicemail saying she needs to talk to him today. Jane comes in, and asks who Nicolette was talking to - she claims it was just 'casual roster stuff'. Jane looks at the laptop, so Nicolette slams it shut.
JANE: I thought you agreed not to stir up trouble with Glen.
NICOLETTE: I did not agree. He could be hiding a criminal record, Mum. Or a salacious sex scandal, or... or dodgy financial dealings!
JANE: Nicolette, just because you saw Glen speaking with John does not mean there is anything more to it.
NICOLETTE: Well, he's got a report on him.
JANE: How do you know that?
NICOLETTE: I assumed it was common knowledge, that everyone knew that Harlow had him looked into.
JANE: Well, even so, John is hardly gonna share unless there is something in it for him.
But Nicolette says she isn't letting this go - she's going to figure out what Glen's hiding.
Lassiter's Complex
Terese and Glen are strolling towards the hotel; Terese is nervous for her meeting with Lucy about the Fashion Week disaster, and is worried that today is 'do or die'. Glen thinks Lucy will recognise Terese acted in good faith and that Montana took advantage.
TERESE: Yeah, thanks to my ex-husband.
GLEN: Don't let him beat you.
TERESE: No, I don't plan to.
As they walk into the lobby, Chloe approaches - they've had more room cancellations from guests who were set to attend Fashion Week, but have also lost some advance bookings as a result of the reputational impact. At this point, Lucy comes in.
LUCY: Damage control needs to be our first priority. At least I was halfway here when this disaster happened.
TERESE: I promise you, there's a good explanation for this.
LUCY: I hope so.
The Waterhole
Nicolette has secured a meeting with John Wong, on the pretext of having a job for him. But Nicolette explains that all she wants is access to work he's already done - the report Harlow commissioned on Glen.
JOHN: That's not what you said on the phone.
NICOLETTE: Yeah, well, you're a hard man to pin down. Had to get you here somehow.
JOHN: I don't like having my time wasted.
NICOLETTE: Neither does Paul Robinson.
JOHN: What's he got to do with it?
NICOLETTE: I know that he's left you a lot of voicemails that you haven't answered. You see, we're working together on this, and I don't think he'd appreciate it if he heard that you were stuffing me around, too.
JOHN: Nice try. I know you two hate each other.
NICOLETTE: Oh, that's old news. You know, it's funny that you don't have time to call Paul, but you could rush down here to meet me. I don't think he'd like that... I just want to read the report.
But an angry John walks out without another word.

Karl comes out of the bedroom wearing a flat cap, and Susan asks him what it's in aid of.
KARL: I just thought I'd try a new look.
But Susan inspects him more closely.
SUSAN: Karl, what's going on with your hair?
She pulls the hat off, to reveal that most of Karl's hair is gone!
SUSAN: It's all fallen out!
KARL: Yeah.
SUSAN: What happened?
KARL: I was experimenting with some of the products from the glaMM cosmetics bag, and it kind of... malfunctioned.
SUSAN: The products that you threw our super at?
KARL: Well, to be fair, I didn't use as directed. Would you like some breakfast?
SUSAN: No! No, I don't want breakfast - I feel too sick to eat! I've been going through our finances, and seeing where we stand. Bottom line is that we will both have to work another seven years to have a comfortable retirement.
KARL: I've actually been doing some research of my own. I thought if we liquified some more of our super, we could invest in high yield shares.
SUSAN: High *risk* shares, you mean?
KARL: Well, just making our money work harder for us.
SUSAN (furious): Throwing the rest of our super at some stupid scheme is not the way to do that!
KARL: I'm just trying to solve things here.
SUSAN: Well, don't, Karl - just don't! In fact, you are not to make any decisions about our money at all.
Lassiter's Hotel
Terese and Lucy are in the office when Paul arrives to join them for the meeting. Lucy is clearly very unhappy with what happened at Fashion Week, and asks how it turned into such a failure. Terese says she never got a hint that Montana had financial troubles.
PAUL: It was your job to dig a bit deeper, wasn't it?
TERESE: (...) You'll be able to explain it best, seeing you knew exactly what was going on.
PAUL: Conspiracy theories do not become you, Terese.
Terese explains to Lucy that Paul let slip in his chat to the Kennedys that he knew Montana had been insolvent for months. Paul retorts that it was just his assumption.
TERESE: Or he knowingly let Lassiter's be dragged into the mud to get some revenge on me.
PAUL: Oh, that is ludicrous! If you recall, I raised concerns about Montana weeks ago.
LUCY: But they just weren't about her financial situation.
PAUL: No, but there were warning bells, though, weren't there? I mean, you should've paid more attention. But oh, no, no - you were the one who backed Montana. You were the one who assured me that everything was gonna be fine.
TERESE: Oh, drop the act, Paul. My god, you're loving this.
PAUL: I am the major shareholder in this hotel. Why on *earth* would I be enjoying this?!
TERESE: Because you would find any way to hurt me.
PAUL: This is *your* failure!
LUCY: That is it! I've heard enough!
Lassiter's Complex
John Wong tells Glen that Nicolette is onto him, and has been asking to see the report Harlow commissioned. She's also been claiming that she's working with Paul, he adds. Glen doesn't think that can be true, but John says whatever's going on, Glen needs to 'get ahead of it'.
JOHN: I warned you this would blow up.
GLEN: Yeah, I'll get it sorted.
JOHN: Good. Because I don't want you costing me my number one client.
John storms off, just as Kiri and Freya appear, rattling Glen. Kiri asks how Terese is doing after the Fashion Week fiasco. Glen says she's under a lot of pressure.
GLEN: But it's possible something like that can bring out the best in people, right?
Kiri and Freya agree, a little perplexed as to what he's getting at, and go on their way. Glen sighs.

Jane, who is a little offended that Nicolette ignored her advice to let the situation be, asks her what happened at her meeting with John Wong.
NICOLETTE: Well, you were right - the guy's a complete vault. But he did seem really uncomfortable when I asked him to show me the file.
JANE: Uncomfortable, or annoyed because you were asking him to do something for free?
NICOLETTE: It wasn't about the money, Mum (...) he shut it down straight away. He seemed super stressed.
JANE: Hmm. Unexpected.
NICOLETTE: Oh, look who's curious now!
Jane claims she's just taking an interest in Nicolette's life, but warns her John Wong is not someone to trifle with. However, she does concede Nic might be onto something with Glen and the file.
NICOLETTE: There is no maybe about it, Mum. John knows something about Glen that he does not want Paul to know.
But she doesn't know how to find out what it is...
Lassiter's Hotel
Lucy and Terese are in the office. Lucy is unimpressed with the 'huge overrun' on the budget for Fashion Week. Terese justifies this by saying Montana was very demanding in ensuring her 'vision' was delivered; she tried to push back, but admits she may have also got a little swept up in the excitement of the event - she thought it was worth it for the company's exposure.
Terese reiterates her theory that Paul knew about Montana's finances all along, but Lucy reminds her there's no proof of that. Lucy has tried to contact Montana to ask her about it, but her lawyer has said she isn't talking.
TERESE: Yeah, that's Paul, covering his tracks.
LUCY: Why do you think he was able to uncover information about Montana, when you had been working with her daily and didn't even see that there was a problem?
TERESE (upset): Because, Lucy, I... I *really* wanted this project to succeed.
LUCY: I know this is your first major solo event since you and Paul had split (...) but Lassiter's is taking a major hit because of this.
TERESE: I know, I know. And I'll do anything to turn it around. I'm already working on a strategy.
LUCY: You have been a great general manager and I have really loved working with you. But with this hidden camera business not that long ago, it is just one scandal too many. Of course you'll keep your shares in the business. But your time with us is over.
The Penthouse
Paul knocks over a queen on his chessboard, and does one of his Machiavellian smirks. Karl storms in, and says Paul should've warned them about Montana. Paul says he's truly sorry for what happened, but maintains that Terese has the wrong end of the stick about Paul having foreknowledge of Montana's situation. Karl is sceptical, saying Paul seemed unsurprised - but Paul claims that's just due to his long business experience.
KARL: To think a friend could stand back and watch us get fleeced.
PAUL: Hey, whoa, hang on. I didn't even know that you'd invested in the company until I saw you and Susan swanning around the VIP area. Now, you wanted to be in the big league but you got burnt. Now, I'm sorry that happened, Karl, but that's not my fault.
Lassiter's Hotel
Chloe is upset to see Terese carrying a box of her possessions towards the exit, and realises she's been dismissed as manager.
CHLOE: This is so unfair. And I've made my decision. I'm going to resign too.
TERESE: Oh, don't be ridiculous, Chloe.
CHLOE: You're being made a scapegoat for what Paul and Montana have done.
TERESE: I'm not letting you sacrifice yourself! That way, Paul gets two victims for the price of one.
CHLOE: You have been the most amazing mentor.
TERESE: Well, take this one last experience and learn from it - never underestimate your rival.
CHLOE: No matter what's happened, you'll still be my business icon.
TERESE: Oh, stop it. I'm trying to hold back the tears as it is.
Glen comes in, and is also upset to see that Terese has been fired. Paul emerges from the lift, smirking.
TERESE: Oh, yeah, go on. Take it all in, I'm sure you're really enjoying this.
PAUL (smirking): It's just business, Terese; it's nothing personal.
TERESE: But it is. This is you feeling rejected and acting out. I'm still a shareholder in this hotel. And I plan to be a very active one!
Paul walks away, still smiling to himself. But Leo has appeared nearby and sees Paul looking pleased, deepening his suspicions.
Harold's Café
Nicolette has a favour to ask of Levi - she wants him to do a police background check on Glen, as she suspects he has a criminal record. Jane, who is sitting nearby, is appalled that she's even asked the question. Levi agrees, saying it's both illegal and unethical; and that, in any case, if Glen has a record, the fact he's in the community means he has paid his debt for his crimes.
LEVI: He should be allowed to live his life in peace. And so should I.
Nicolette looks annoyed.

Susan and Terese are having a cuppa and catch-up about their respective crises. Susan has had a message from Karl, asking what she'd like him to bring home for dinner.
SUSAN: *Now* he consults me about what he's doing. Yes, Karl, please keep me informed about whether or not we're having chicken or fish for dinner, but $200,000 - you just sign that away to whoever you like (!)
TERESE: Oh, I could cry for all that money.
SUSAN: Don't worry, I have. It's not even that that hurts the most. Something came over Karl the second he saw Clive's apartment. He was suddenly obsessed with wealth. It was like he became a completely different person. As soon as he started talking about risky investments, I should've seen what was happening. I just never imagined he'd be capable of this sort of deception.
TERESE: Oh, Susan, don't blame yourself. You had every reason to trust him. Me, on the other hand - should've known better. You know, Paul was so supportive of me running Fashion Week. And I really believed he'd come to terms with our separation.
SUSAN: Well, at least you've got a clean break now. You can work out what you want to do next.
TERESE: Oh, I already know that. I'm gonna make his life a living hell.
Susan smiles.
TERESE: Thinking of him sitting up there in his penthouse, all cocky and triumphant. He's not gonna see me coming.
Harold's Café
Lucy and Jane are having a coffee together. Lucy is feeling awful for having had to fire Terese, but is also surprised that Terese got so sucked in by Montana. Jane points out that Terese thinks Paul had a hand in that. Lucy reiterates that there's no proof.
JANE: Well, Paul is an expert at covering his tracks. No, I wouldn't put it past him. And that is all that I am saying.
Jane goes to order more coffee from Nicolette, and uses the opportunity to chastise her again about asking Levi to check out Glen.
NICOLETTE: Mum, all he had to do was say no, and he did. No harm, no foul.
Nicolette sees Chloe come in, and goes over to see if she has any more 'intel' on Glen. Chloe says she has too much going on to think about it, with Terese getting fired. Plus...
CHLOE: We were way off-base with Glen last time, and I'm only just getting back to a good place with Kiri. Maybe you should let the whole thing go.

Jane nods approvingly, but Nicolette looks peeved.

Toadie is updating Susan on the situation with Montana, when Karl comes in with the groceries. We learn that Montana didn't deposit Karl and Susan's money into the glaMM account, but spent it paying off bills elsewhere, so there's no way of recovering it.
TOADIE: I'm really sorry, guys.
Toadie leaves, and Susan fumes.
KARL: Well, we can still have the future we hoped for. It's just gonna take longer.
SUSAN: *Years* longer.
KARL: We can get through this together, Susan.
SUSAN: Karl, if this were a collaborative relationship - if you cared *anything* about what I want - we would still have our super.
KARL: Oh, Susan, we need to look -
SUSAN: No, please! Just go, before I say something I'm gonna regret.
KARL: Alright, look, I'll go for a walk - as long as you need.
SUSAN: No, I am not talking about an hour or two, Karl. I need you to *leave*! Just go - go and pack a bag! Stay somewhere else!
KARL: Where would I go?!
SUSAN: I don't care, Karl - I don't *care*! Just *go*!
The Penthouse
Leo confronts Paul about his confrontation with Terese in the lobby earlier. Keeping up the pretence, Paul expresses disappointment that she feels the need to take it out on him in public.
LEO: Dad, can you just be honest with me, please? Did you know anything about Montana's financial situation?
PAUL: Oh, for the hundredth time, Leo, no! Alright, Montana was charming and charismatic. But it was all a front - I mean, look at what she did to the Kennedys. She's a predator, for goodness' sakes.
At this point, Karl comes out of the lift, with his bags!
KARL: Paul! Susan's kicked me out, so I'm staying here. Where's your spare room?
PAUL: Excuse me?!
KARL: Well, you caused this problem, you can deal with the fallout.
PAUL: How many times do I have to say it, Karl? Alright, you know what? I'm quite happy to comp you a room at the hotel - how's that?
KARL: No, no, I'm staying here. You can live with the consequences of your action - literally.
Paul grudgingly agrees, though says it's only because he wants to help. He shows Karl to the spare room.
KARL: Bet you wish you'd said something about Montana now.
Leo looks suspicious.

Terese and Glen are chewing the fat about the Fashion Week fallout. Glen tells her not to beat herself up about being a decent person and not being able to second-guess Paul. But Terese thinks she should be able to by now.
GLEN: You're a loving, intelligent, beautiful woman. And Paul's so bitter and destructive because he knows what he lost.
Terese begins to cry, and Glen hugs her.
GLEN: Hey, don't be upset.
TERESE: It's just... I've forgotten what it was like to hear nice things from a man that's not trying to manipulate me.
GLEN: But it's all true. You're amazing.
They stare at one another, then Terese impulsively leans in to kiss Glen. It escalates into a proper pash.
