Erinsborough Hospital/Police Station
Hendrix, Susan and Karl watch over Mackenzie in her hospital room. Upset, Hendrix goes in to sit beside Mackenzie's bed and hold her hand, silently willing her to wake up.
Amy and Toadie look on as Zara gets her fingerprints taken by Sergeant Rodwell at the police station. Toadie asks if Amy will be okay while he goes to the hospital to check on Mackenzie. But Amy starts to freak out when she realises that Toadie might not want to be Zara's lawyer. "I think Zara needs somebody who is unaware of her circumstances," Toadie suggests.
AMY: Can you at least tell me what's going to happen to her?
TOADIE: After the interview she may get bail, or she may be held in remand overnight.
AMY: In jail? No, Toad, please. I can't do this without you. I can't do it with some random just ticking off boxes. I need you right now. I trust you.
Andrew comes out to let Amy know they're ready to interview Zara. He asks if Amy needs help engaging a lawyer, but Amy breathes a sigh of relief when Toadie says he'll be representing the teen.
Back at the hospital, Aaron wheels Isla's pram beside Jane and Nicolette. Nic fusses over her mother, making sure the doctors did all the right tests and check-ups, but Jane assures her they found nothing of concern. Aaron can't wrap his head around Zara starting such a massive fire, "burning letterboxes is one thing, but this?" Jane says the warning signs were clear; she feels as though Amy just sat back and let things get out of hand. David joins them and Nic asks how Mackenzie's faring. David says he can't discuss anything until he's spoken to Mac's dad: he's just waiting on a few test results before he calls. When Nic tells him they're heading home, David says he can't join them as he's picked up a double shift. He notices Aaron has been studiously ignoring him the whole time and attempts to chat.
DAVID: I was actually just about to text you. Are you going to be home in the morning?
AARON: Yep.
DAVID: Good. There's just something I want to run by you.
AARON: Okay, well that's all right. Why don't you just tell Dean and then he can fill me in later?
Aaron gives him a blithe smile and walks off. David rolls his eyes at Aaron's petulance.
Harold's Café
Sadie is stressed about Mackenzie, wondering how she's going, but Aubrey snaps that she needs to forget about her and focus on getting their cover story straight. "I'm trying, but we literally ruined Zara's life," Sadie replies. "Better hers than ours," Aubrey shrugs. Sadie gets scared when Aubrey tells her that if she blabs the truth, she'll make out that Sadie pushed her into everything. "That's Plan B, is that what you want?" Aubrey demands. Sadie can only meekly shake her head.
Erinsborough Hospital
Susan and Hendrix are in Mackenzie's room while David fills them in on her progress. David says they did a bronchoscopy and found she has mild airway burns. They'll heal, but her blood-work indicates carbon monoxide poisoning, which is why she hasn't woken up yet. They're hoping once they've brought her levels down she'll come to.
HENDRIX: Hoping?
DAVID: There is a very slim chance that we won't be able to. But the greater, serious risk at the moment is neurological issues due to the lack of oxygen to her brain. We're treating her with oxygen to flush her system of monoxide and monitoring her very closely.
Hendrix slumps onto the chair beside Mackenzie's bed, looking distraught.
HENDRIX: How long till you know? How long till you know that it hasn't worked?
DAVID: I can't say. I'm sorry.
Susan thanks David for updating them. David thinks Hendrix should get checked out too, but Hendrix stubbornly says he's not leaving Mackenzie's side until she wakes up.
Police Station
Toadie and Amy are in the interview room with Zara. Before Andrew arrives, Toadie advises Zara not to say anything until they learn if there's any evidence against her. Zara protests that they won't because she didn't start the fire. Andrew walks in and begins the interview, telling Zara's she's up for some serious charges. Toadie looks worried about Zara rocking the boat when she insists that Sadie and Aubrey lit the fire.
ANDREW: Do you have any evidence?
ZARA: I'm not the one who's meant to gather evidence, you are.
TOADIE: Zara!
ZARA: No, if I'd lit the fire I'd admit it. I own my stupid mistakes. I mean, the fire alarm at school and stealing the pendant from Hendrix?
TOADIE: Uh, can we just take five so I can talk with my client, please?
ZARA: No! I take responsibility and I don't lie. I'm not going down for something I didn't do!
Toadie throws Andrew a look and the sergeant says he's happy to give them some time to regroup.
ZARA: Yeah why don't you use it to find a new officer to do this interview?
AMY: (scoffing in disbelief at her daughter's brazen attitude)
ZARA: I mean you being Sadie's dad plus her being guilty - isn't that a conflict of interest?
AMY: Zara, be quiet!
ANDREW: Let's take a break for your benefit. But you should know I've noted your statement about the stolen pendant. I'm very interested to know more.
Number 32
Nicolette and Aaron return from Isla's room, high-fiving at how much better their synchronised lullabies are going. "She either loves it or hates it so much she'd rather sleep," Nicolette chuckles. Jane tells them she's been talking to Susan and found out that the art wing is badly burnt and there's smoke damage everywhere. School will be on hold until it's repaired. Aaron wonders if Amy has to foot the bill, but Jane says the insurance will cover it.
AARON: Bet she's relieved about that. Zara's legal fees are going to be through the roof.
JANE: That is a consequence of Amy's actions that she will have to face.
NICOLETTE: You mean Zara's actions?
JANE: No, I mean what I say. I told you, I believe Amy is just as much to blame.
Nicolette and Aaron swap wary looks with one another. Leo then drops by with Abigail to offer them all some takeaway and check in on Jane. Feeling uncomfortable, Aaron decides to go to bed.
LEO: I'm not his favourite person right now am I.
NICOLETTE: Twinning with your twin.
LEO: What, are him and David still fighting? (Nicolette nods) Glen told me about the getaway they're going on. I thought it might put them in a better place?
NICOLETTE: I don't even know if they're going. It's a bit hard when they're not actually speaking.
Erinsborough Hospital
Hendrix is watching Mackenzie through the window when Roxy and Kyle arrive with a coffee for him. They ask how Mac is, and then how Hendrix is coping. Mackenzie suddenly wakes up coughing, so Hendrix rushes in and Kyle calls out to David for assistance. David heads in and encourages Mackenzie not to cough, but to try and take deep breaths instead.
Police Station
Wendy has brought Sadie in so that she can be questioned about the fire. Andrew and Wendy are trying to stay chill for Sadie's sake so she doesn't get too freaked out by the process. Sadie wants to know why her dad can't do the interview with her, but Andrew says it's a little too close to home. "Once I've finished interviewing Zara I'll be talking to Aubrey," he says. Looking alarmed, Sadie asks what Zara has been saying. Andrew tells her not to worry, she just needs to focus on herself. "Think carefully about the questions you're asked," he advises. "And answer honestly." Wendy promises she'll be right by her daughter's side so she won't have to stress, all Sadie needs to do is listen and say what she knows. Sadie gives them a brief smile and nods.
Number 22
Terese is relieved to hear from Roxy and Kyle that Mackenzie is awake. Roxy says Hendrix won't leave her side and is the "world's best boyfriend", which Kyle takes mock offence to until he realises he's now "world's best husband". Kyle then decides to order a pizza, so while he's busy on the phone, Roxy excitedly informs Terese that she's "pulling the trigger soon on insemination" with her world's best hubby. Terese wonders if it has to be so fast, but Roxy figures there's no time like the present.
TERESE: You two will make wonderful parents but there's plenty of time. You don't have to rush into it.
ROXY: I have to, no. Want to? Yes. Going to? Hell yeah, baby!
Police Station
Wendy leaves the interview room with Sadie. Andrew finds Toadie and asks where Amy is, finding out she's stepped outside for a breather. Andrew says Toadie can tell Amy that Zara's bail has been set and she can go home for now; her court appearance will be set up shortly. Zara can't believe her ears and asks Sadie what on earth she said in the interview.
ZARA: Sadie, please, you can take it back. What kind of person does this? My whole life is ruined because of you! You're a liar! A gutless liar!
ANDREW: Zara you've been charged with arson.
ZARA: It's not fair, she's lying!
ANDREW: You're looking at another potential charge of theft. You don't want to make it a third for harassment.
ZARA: But it's not fair!
TOADIE: Zara that's enough.
Toadie quickly guides Zara away before she can protest any more, thinking it's for her own good. Zara asks Sadie one more time why she'd do this to her. All the adults are oblivious when a sorrowful-looking Sadie mouths "I'm sorry" to Zara.
Erinsborough Hospital
Toadie and Susan are back to visit Mackenzie in the morning. Mac says Hendrix spent the night by her side and snored so loudly. Toad asks for an update on Mac's health, so Hendrix tells them that the doctors said the carbon monoxide poisoning won't have any lasting effects. Hendrix then wonders what's happening with Zara. Toadie says she's been charged with more charges pending - she owned up to stealing the pendant but hasn't admitted to starting the fire. Mackenzie starts to cough so Susan tells her they'll let her rest. When Susan and Toadie leave, Mackenzie wonders if Zara might be telling the truth.
MACKENZIE: She told me that Aubrey and Sadie started the fire.
HENDRIX: And you believe her?
MACKENZIE: Yeah I do.
Ramsay Street
Aaron returns from a jog and has a chat with Karl before the doc heads to work. Aaron wants to know if Karl has much to do with Dean the cleaner at the hospital. Karl says Dean's certainly chatty enough, and is also friendly. He asks Aaron why he wants to know and Aaron admits Dean's been sticking his nose into his and David's business.
AARON: David's been telling him about our private life.
KARL: I wouldn't worry too much about that. David probably just feels sorry for him. Dean's a bit lonely, he broke up with his boyfriend recently.
Over at Number 32, Amy catches up with Jane and Nicolette just as they're about to take Isla for a walk. Jane isn't too impressed to see Amy, or accept her apologies either. She asks Amy if she's sorry she got hurt, or if she's sorry it was Zara's fault. Nicolette is taken aback by her mum's bluntness, as is Amy, but Amy admits she's sorry for everything.
AMY: I also just wanted to see if you're okay.
JANE: Well I'm not. Barely slept a wink, so excuse my abruptness.
AMY: That's okay.
JANE: But I would like to know what you plan on doing with Zara?
AMY: Um, look, I'm really not sure. Everything is just a mess.
JANE: Don't you feel this is clear cause to send her back to Cairns?
AMY: I just don't know, Jane.
JANE: This is the problem, Amy, you have had chance after chance to do something about Zara but you've ignored all of the warning signs. And if you don't mind me saying, I think you have done an appalling job of raising that girl.
NICOLETTE: Okay, that's enough mum.
Nicolette hastily takes Jane by the arm and leads her away, leaving Amy quite gutted.
Number 26
Roxy has summoned Terese over so she can watch as she presents Kyle a breakfast of sardines and a boiled egg. Terese catches on to what Roxy's doing, not looking impressed, but it takes Kyle a while to figure out that Roxy's showing him a "visual representation of our next big step". Meaning, she's booked in an appointment at the clinic for insemination.
ROXY: We're going to get pregnant!
KYLE: Babe, I thought we were going to wait?
ROXY: Wait, schmait! With everything that has happened in the last couple of months, life's too short.
Kyle says this is the best surprise ever. "I'm so happy I can do this for you," Roxy beams, hugging him. Terese still does not look thrilled at all.
Number 30
Zara eavesdrops in the hallway while Amy speaks on the phone to Zara's dad. Amy tells Eric that Zara will most likely end up in juvenile detention, and becomes frustrated when it appears as though her ex is blaming her for everything. Amy starts to yell that she's regretted "pretty much every single decision in my entire life!" until she realises Zara's listening in. Amy tells Eric she'll call him back later and hangs up.
ZARA: That was dad? I'm assuming you told him I did it?
AMY: I told him you would be charged.
ZARA: Because it sounded like you were assuming I'd be found guilty. He blames you doesn't he?
AMY: So he should. I blame me. If I was a better mother you wouldn't be in this situation. You wouldn't be facing juvie.
ZARA: It might not get to that. If the cops do their job and find out the truth-
AMY: Zara there's too much evidence. There's too much.
Number 32
Nicolette gives her mum a glass of water for her "hot head", but Jane doesn't understand why Nicolette embarrassed her in front of Amy by dragging her away.
NICOLETTE: Oh mum, trust me, you did a fine job of embarrassing yourself.
JANE: I was merely stating facts.
NICOLETTE: Don't you think you're being a bit hypocritical?
JANE: What is that supposed to mean?
NICOLETTE: Well if Amy's such a terrible mother because of Zara's choices, what does that make you? I mean, I'd have thought you'd have some empathy. And also, kicking a woman while she's down? It's not cool, mum.
Jane looks slightly chastened as David appears after his shower. Aaron also walks into the kitchen after having a swim. David makes another attempt at talking to his husband, letting him know about the trip away with Glen and Nicolette. He asks Aaron if he wants to come, saying that he thought it would be a good chance for them to spend quality time together. Aaron asks who'll look after Isla, but Jane confirms she'll do the honours. "Let me think about it," Aaron tells David.
Number 30
Amy anxiously tells Toadie that Zara has packed a bag and fled. Toadie says this will have serious repercussions for her bail if they can't find her. Amy checks the tracking app on her phone, frowning when she discovers Zara's mobile is still in the house. She gives it a ring and finds it on the kitchen bench atop of a note Zara's written. Amy's face crumples when she sees the message her daughter has left: 'You're better off without me'.
